To study the pollutants immobilization and economy of biologically amended coastal soil, Alternanthera philoxeroides biomass (Bm), biochar (Bc), and dodecyldimethyl betaine (BS) modified Bc (BS-Bc) were used to amend coastal soil from Jialing, Fu, and Qu River. A runoff experiment was used to simulate the longitudinal migration and morphological changes of Pb(II) and chlortetracycline (CTC) in each amended coastal soil, and the economy of pollutants immobilization by different amended coastal soil were compared. The equilibrium time of Pb(II) and CTC in each amended coastal soil ranked in the order of BS-Bc-amended > Bc-amended > Bm-amended > unamended coastal soil. The average Pb(II) and CTC flow rate in different amended coastal soils presented an opposite trend with the equilibrium time. Pb(II) and CTC content all reduced with the increasing runoff length. Under the same soils, the content changes presented Bm and Bc amended > unamended > BS-Bc amended. CEC and clay content of coastal soils were the key factors affecting Pb(II) and CTC immobilization. The immobilization mechanisms were electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, surface precipitation, and complexation to Pb(II) and ion exchange and complexation to CTC. The economy of Pb(II) and CTC immobilization ranged from 0.5 to 9.0 and from 1.0 to 5.4 mg/¥, and coastal soil amended by BS-Bc had practical application value and high economy.

RESUMO

The objective of this study is to develop a remediation technology for composited heavy metal-contaminated soil. Biochars (BC300, BC400, and BC500) derived from corn were combined with potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KH2PO4) to immobilize and remove heavy metal ions, including mercury (Hg2+), cadmium (Cd2+), and lead (Pb2+). The adsorption kinetics of metal ions in aqueous solutions with different concentrations was tested, and the fitting effects of the two models were compared. The findings demonstrate that the joint application of biochar and KH2PO4 could markedly enhance the immobilization efficacy of Pb2+, whereas the utilization of KH2PO4 on its own exhibited a more pronounced immobilization impact on Cd2+. Furthermore, the present study underscores the shortcomings of various remediation techniques that must be taken into account when addressing heavy metal-contaminated soils. It also emphasizes the value of comprehensive remediation techniques that integrate multiple remediation agents. This study offers a novel approach and methodology for addressing the intricate and evolving challenges posed by heavy metal contamination in soil. Its practical value and potential for application are significant.

The presence of Ag(I) and Pb(II) ions in wastewater poses a significant threat to human health in contemporary times. This study aims to explore the development of a novel and economical adsorbent by grafting MnO2 particles onto low-rank coal, providing an innovative solution for the remediation of water contaminated with silver and lead. The synthesized nanocomposites, referred to as MnO2-Coal, underwent thorough characterization using FTIR, XRD, BET, and SEM to highlight the feasibility of in-situ surface modification of coal with MnO2 nanoparticles. The adsorption of Ag(I) and Pb(II) from their respective aqueous solution onto MnO2-Coal was systematically investigated, with optimization of key parameters such as pH, temperature, initial concentration, contact time, ionic strength, and competing ions. Remarkably adsorption equilibrium was achieved within a 10 min, resulting in impressive removal rates of 80-90 % for both Ag(I) and Pb(II) at pH 6. The experimental data were evaluated using Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models. The Langmuir isotherm model proved to be more accurate in representing the adsorption of Ag(I) and Pb(II) ions onto MnO2-Coal, exhibiting high regression coefficients (R2 = 0.99) and maximum adsorption capacities of 93.57 and 61.98 mg/g, along with partition coefficients of 4.53 and 71.92 L/g for Ag(I) and Pb(II), respectively, at 293 K. Kinetic assessments employing PFO, PSO, Elovich, and IPD models indicated that the PFO and PSO models were most suitable for adsorption mechanism of Pb(II) and Ag(I) on MnO2-Coal composites, respectively. Moreover, thermodynamic evaluation revealed the spontaneous and endothermic adsorption process for Ag(I), while exothermic behavior for adsorption of Pb(II). Importantly, this approach not only demonstrates cost-effectiveness but also environmental friendliness in treating heavy metal-contamination in water. The research suggests the potential of MnO2-Coal composites as efficient and sustainable adsorbents for water purification applications.

A method using diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) for the accurate quantification of trace-level (µg L-1) Sr and Pb concentrations and isotope ratios [δSRM 987(87Sr/86Sr) and δSRM 981(207Pb/206Pb)] in labile, bioavailable element fractions in soils is reported. The method is based on a novel poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) membrane binding layer with combined di(2-ethyl-hexyl)phosphoric acid (HDEHP) and 4,4'(5')-bis-t-butylcyclohexano-18-crown-6 (crown-ether) functionality with high selectivity for Sr and Pb (TK100 membrane). Laboratory evaluation of the TK100 DGT showed linear uptake of Sr over time (2-24 h) up to very high Sr mass loadings on TK100 membranes (288 µg cm-2) and effective performance in the range of pH (3.9-8.2), ionic strength (0.001-0.1 mol L-1), and cation competition (50-160 mg L-1 Ca in a synthetic soil solution matrix) of environmental interest. Selective three-step elution of TK100 membranes using hydrochloric acid allowed us to obtain purified Sr and Pb fractions with adequate (≥75%) recovery and quantitative (≥96%) matrix reduction. Neither DGT-based sampling itself nor selective elution or mass loading effects caused significant isotopic fractionation. Application of TK100 DGT in natural soils and comparison with conventional approaches of bioavailability assessment demonstrated the method's unique capability to obtain information on Sr and Pb resupply dynamics and isotopic variations with low combined uncertainty within a single sampling step.

The current portfolio of organoselenium compounds applicable as volatile precursors for atomic layer deposition can be denoted as very limited. Hence, we report herein facile and cost-effective preparation of two bis(trialkylstannyl)selenides as well as one selenole and three bis(trialkylsilyl)selenides. Their syntheses have been optimized to: (i) use readily available and inexpensive starting materials, (ii) involve operationally simple methodology (heating in a pressure vessel), (iii) use a minimum amount of additives and catalysts, and (iv) either exclude additional purification or involve only simple distillation. The chemical structure of prepared Se derivatives was confirmed by multinuclear NMR and GC/MS. Their fundamental thermal properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and TGA methods that revealed thermal stability within the range of 160-300 °C.

Oil exploration's devastation on health and the environment may far outweigh its economic benefits. An oil spill occurred at Egbokodo River in Delta State, Nigeria, thereby polluting the land and water bodies. The study was therefore aimed at evaluating the impacts of iron, lead, cadmium, and chromium on the zooplankton community structure of Egbokodo River and the potential health risks. Zooplankton and surface water samples were collected to investigate the concentrations of trace metals and zooplankton abundance. The associated carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects of the metals in the water were analyzed. Trace metal concentrations in the surface water were determined using atomic absorption spectroscopy (Philips model PU 9100) and zooplankton samples were collected using a hydrobios plankton net (mesh size 25 µm). Total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and oil and grease (OG) were determined using Agilent 7890B gas chromatography coupled to flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and volumetric analysis respectively. The trend of the abundance of zooplanktons cross the river was 18 individuals (Station A) < 100 individuals (Station B) < 155 individuals (Station C). Cyclopoida proved to be the most resilient to the impacts of the oil spill. On a taxa basis, the order of abundance among Calanoida, Cyclopoida, Cladoceran, and Harpacticoida was Station C > Station B > Station A, except in Amphipoda where Station B > Station C > Station A was observed. Iron and lead posed significant carcinogenic risks that are liable to be inflicted by the ingestion of the water. The cumulative non-carcinogenic health risk in the male was the only significant (> 1) among the age groups. Total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), oil and grease (OG), iron, and lead had notable impacts on the general abundance of zooplankton in the aquatic habitat. The dominance of the Cyclopoida in the river buttressed the impact of the oil spill which warrants a prompt remediation measure. The pollution had notable ecological impacts on the zooplankton community structure of the aquatic habitat. The adults in the nearby human populations are liable to elicit carcinogenic health challenges associated with lead and iron ingestion. The males are at risk of non-carcinogenic illnesses which are associated with the combined toxicity effects of all the metals. The study suggests that the pollution in Egbokodo River was validated by the dominance of the Cyclopoida in the aquatic habitat. The study confers bioindicator reputation on the Cyclopoida for future biomonitoring studies.

BACKGROUND: The major portion of lead in the body resides in skeletal system. The bone turnover affects the release of lead into the circulation from bones. The bone turnover biomarkers (BTM) in lead-battery workers with long-term exposure to lead have not been explored yet. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the BTM (formation and resorption) in lead-battery workers with long-term exposure to lead in lead-battery manufacturing plant. METHODS: 176 male lead-exposed workers and 80 matched comparison group were studied. All participants were examined for blood lead levels (BLLs), bone formation biomarkers- serum osteocalcin (OC), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BALP)-and bone resorption biomarkers-serum pyridinoline (PYD), deoxypyridinoline (DPYD), tartarate-resistant acid phosphatase-5b (TRACP-5b), and urinary hydroxyproline (UHYP). RESULTS: We found a significantly higher bone formation biomarkers such as BALP (p=0.007) and bone resorption biomarkers, eg, PYD (p=0.048), TRCAP-5b (p=0.001), and UHYP (p=0.001) in lead-exposed workers. A significant (p=0.041) negative correlation (ρ ­0.128) was noted between BLLs and OC. A significant positive correlation was noted between BLLs and TRACP-5b (ρ 0.176, p=0.005) and UHYP (ρ 0.258, p=0.004). Serum OC (p=0.040) and UHYP (p=0.015) levels changed significantly with BLL level. Bone resorption biomarkers levels- PYD, TRACP-5b, and BALP-were higher among those with higher BLLs levels. The duration of exposure was significantly associated with BALP (p=0.037), DPYD (p=0.016), TRACP-5b (p=0.001), and UHYP (p=0.002) levels. CONCLUSION: Long-term lead exposure affects the bone turnover.

There is an increasing trend of developing various low-cost biogenic sorbents for the efficient and economical removal of noxious metals . Curry leaf powder (CLP), a promising non-toxic biosorbent containing several bioactive compounds was prepared by the pulverization of the dried leaves for the effective removal of Lead (Pb) and Cadmium (Cd). Various batch sorption experiments were carried out under constant temperature (25 °C), different pH (4.5-10.5), initial concentrations (50-200 mg L-1), adsorbent dosages (0.10-0.40 g) and contact times (0-60 min) to understand the optimum experimental conditions and simultaneously evaluate the adsorption isotherms and removal kinetics of CLP. Adsorption equilibrium was established in less than an hour interval (50 min). The pseudo-equilibrium process was best described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic (R2 ≥ 0.99), Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm model (R2 ≥ 0.94). The removal rate of Pb and Cd gradually increased (15.7 and 12.7 mg g-1 for Pb and Cd) at 100 mg L-1 of initial concentration till 60 min of contact period in a single contaminant system, the effect was non-significant for multiple adsorbent dosage systems (p > 0.05; t-test) though. The regeneration potential of the exhausted biosorbent was excellent upto 5 cycles with the better efficiency observed for Pb. The obtained results explicitly validated the probable utilization of CLP as a promising green adsorbent for metal removal . Future study may highlight the decontamination aspects of emerging contaminants with such green bio sorbents in large scale as well as mimicing the stomach conditions.

Major concerns exist regarding the environmental and human health risks caused by exposure to heavy metals. Spiders are often used as a model in ecotoxicological studies to assess soil pollution. Here, we measured the bioaccumulation of copper (Cu) and lead (Pb) in spiders, Lycosa terrestris and Pardosa birmanica, by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). We investigated whether Cu and Pb accumulation differs according to different spider species, single versus combined metal exposure, and routes of exposure. Spiders were exposed to 10 mM CuSO4 and 10 mM PbCl2 solutions separately or in combination (10 mM + 10 mM) through different exposure routes (spiked soil and food) for 6 weeks. The effect of metals on the survival and body mass of exposed and unexposed (control) spiders was determined. We found that in both spider species, accumulation of metals increased with exposure time. In single metal exposure, Cu accumulation from food was higher than soil exposure in both spider species, whereas the opposite was observed for Pb. The simultaneous uptake of Cu and Pb significantly decreased from food and soil, respectively. Soil exposure caused more accumulation of metals in L. terrestris than P. birmanica. Metal exposure via contaminated food caused higher mortality compared to soil exposure. Body mass of both spider species was significantly decreased and negatively correlated with metal's concentration. Overall, our results show that bioaccumulation efficiency of Cu and Pb differs significantly in spiders exposed to metal's mixture compared to single metal exposure and is dependent on the exposure route, the type of metal, and spider species. More understanding of the effects of exposure to metal mixture and exposure routes is essential for designing and supporting risk assessment and ecological monitoring programs.

In this study, we investigated the historical variation, source identification, and distribution of heavy metal pollution in sediments of the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) using 210Pb dating. Our results suggest that the heavy metal concentrations were higher in the western part of the estuary. For all heavy metals, Cd was significantly enriched in the sediments. The Pearl River Delta (PRD) has experienced rapid economic development in the past 40 years, a decreasing trend in heavy metal fluxes after 2004 was identified, which suggests a reduction in heavy metal concentrations due to the removal of heavy polluting industries and the effective control of sewage discharge. A binary mixing model reveals that the contributions of anthropogenic Pb ranged from 45.4 to 64%. Based on lead isotopic ratios (206/207Pb and 208/206Pb), it was found that geologic materials and industrial pollution were the main sources of heavy metals in the PRE sediments.

Aquatic ecosystems continuously receive potentially hazardous heavy metals from natural and anthropogenic sources. Focusing on the origin of heavy metals, this study aims to estimate the load contribution of tributaries from individual watershed and human drainage and to dissect the source of heavy metals, as commonly required for environmental impact assessment. Using integrated water dynamics, Geographic Information System (GIS), and chemical analysis, we identified and evaluated the heavy metal sources of the Kosaka river system in Hokuroku basin, which is a historically mined area in Northeast Japan, both in the high-water and low-water seasons. The migration and diffusion behaviors of heavy metals along with hydro-transport were analyzed, and the effects of mining activities on regional water quality both in the high-water and low-water seasons were clarified. The results indicate that Zn pollution was obvious in the Kosaka River network, especially in the downstream area. The spatial heterogeneity of heavy metal outflows from tributary watersheds was obvious, and the variations had strong correlations with mine site locations. The heavy metal flows in the mainstream increased sharply in the vicinity downstream of the Kosaka refinery drainage outlets. Compared to the low-water season, the influences of human drainage were slighter in high-water season, with lower contribution rates due to the dilution effect of the greater water discharge. Downscale sampling is effective to identify pollutant sources in regional basins.

The levels of toxic metals (Al, Cd, Pb) and trace metals (B, Ba, Cu, Fe, Mn, Sr, Zn) were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) in the muscle (sirloin and chuck) and liver from a total of 180 samples of steers (less than 2 years old) (Bos taurus) of foreign and local origin slaughtered on the island of La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain). As regards toxic metals, Al was the metal with the highest contents in both tissues of the foreign steers (3.75 mg/kg in the muscle and 55.3 mg/kg in the liver) and the local steers (5.60 mg/kg in the muscle and 8.65 mg/kg in the liver). In conclusion, the present study confirmed that beef is a source of trace elements, mainly Fe and Zn. In addition, the consumption of this type of beef did not show significant intakes of toxic metals (Al, Cd, and Pb) and, therefore, the consumption of the steer muscle and liver does not pose a toxicological risk for Spanish consumers.

The sensitive detection of Pb2+ is of significant importance for food safety, environmental monitoring, and human health care. To this end, a novel fluorescent biosensor, DNAzyme-functionalized R-phycoerythrin (DNAzyme-R-PE), was presented for Pb2+ analysis. The biosensor was prepared via the immobilization of Iowa Black® FQ-modified DNAzyme-substrate complex onto the surface of SPDP-functionalized R-PE. The biosensor produced a minimal fluorescence signal in the absence of Pb2+. However, Pb2+ recognition can induce the cleavage of substrate, resulting in a fluorescence restoration of R-PE. The fluorescence changes were used to measure sensitively Pb2+ and the limit of detection was 0.16 nM with a linear range from 0.5-75 nM. Furthermore, the proposed biosensor showed excellent selectivity towards Pb2+ even in the presence of other metal ions interferences and was demonstrated to successfully determine Pb2+ in spiked lake water samples.

A new breed of nanocomposite-based spray-on sensor is developed for in-situ active structural health monitoring (SHM). The novel nanocomposite sensor is rigorously designed with graphene as the nanofiller and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as the matrix, fabricated using a simple spray deposition process. Electrical analysis, as well as morphological characterization of the spray-on sensor, was conducted to investigate percolation characteristic, in which the optimal threshold (~0.91%) of the graphene/PVP sensor was determined. Owing to the uniform and stable conductive network formed by well-dispersed graphene nanosheets in the PVP matrix, the tailor-made spray-on sensor exhibited excellent piezoresistive performance. By virtue of the tunneling effect of the conductive network, the sensor was proven to be capable of perceiving signals of guided ultrasonic waves (GUWs) with ultrahigh frequency up to 500 kHz. Lightweight and flexible, the spray-on nanocomposite sensor demonstrated superior sensitivity, high fidelity, and high signal-to-noise ratio under dynamic strain with ultralow magnitude (of the order of micro-strain) that is comparable with commercial lead zirconate titanate (PZT) wafers. The sensors were further networked to perform damage characterization, and the results indicate significant application potential of the spray-on nanocomposite-based sensor for in-situ active GUW-based SHM.

A long term experiment was conducted to verify the phytoremediation effect of large biomass plants and to seek the balance between remediation effect and economy. Eucalyptus globulus were planted with rotation periods of respectively 3, 6 and 9 years to examine the effect on soil remediation. Biomass and concentrations of Cd, Pb and Cu in E. globulus were measured after each harvest. The economic value of the plant was estimated. Results showed E3 (9th year uprooted) had the best soil remediation effect and economic benefit. Therefore, soil remediation and economy were best balanced when E. globulus were not cut.

The aim of this study was to determine the distribution of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in muscle and liver tissue of Haemulopsis axillaris and Diapterus peruvianus from the Eastern Pacific in Mexico and to assess the health risk to consumers. Fish were collected as bycatch on the continental shelf between the coasts of Sinaloa and Guerrero (Eastern Pacific). Cd and Pb were quantified in muscle and liver tissue using graphite-furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry (GF-AAS).Concentration of Cd was greater in muscle tissue than in liver tissue; with Pb, however, the opposite pattern was found. The highest concentration of Cd (0.177 µg g-1) was found in muscle tissue of H. axillaris from Sinaloa. For Pb, the highest level (0.692 µg g-1) was found in the liver tissue of H. axillaris also from Sinaloa. Levels of Cd and Pb in muscle tissue were both below Mexican Guidelines (0.5, 1.0 µg g-1 wet weight for Cd and Pb respectively) and International Guidelines. The hazard index (HI) for both metals in the edible portion of studied considering metal levels in the edible portion and the rate of fish consumption by the Mexican population (in adults and children) was less than 1 (HI < 1), values which do not represent a health risk to consumers.

Lead service lines (LSLs)-lead pipes connecting the water main under the street to a building's plumbing-contribute an estimated 50% to 75% of lead in tap water when they are present. Although Congress banned lead in plumbing materials in 1986, over 6 million LSLs remain in homes across the United States today. This paper summarizes three different home buying or renting scenario-based experimental studies used to evaluate disclosure styles, to assess if these influenced respondents' perceived risk of the LSL in a home, and their willingness to act. In renting scenarios, having landlords disclose the presence of an LSL, but also provide water test results showing lead levels below the EPA's lead action level resulted in lower levels of perceived risk, and of willingness to act. In seller-disclosure home buying scenarios, levels of perceived risk and willingness to act were consistently high, and three different disclosure styles did not differentially influence those outcomes. In home inspector-disclosure home buying scenarios, levels of perceived risk and willingness to act were high, but having explicit recommendations to replace LSLs and/or information about risk did not further influence those outcomes. In some cases, including the specific recommendations backfired. Implications for policy and regulation are discussed.

In this study, the effect of washing, soaking (1, 5 and 12 h), and cooking rice methods including Rinsed (boiling in excess water) and Kateh (conventional) cooking on the reduction of the arsenic (As), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) were evaluated. The results showed that the rinsed cooking has higher efficiency for removal of toxic metals (As = 42.3%, Pb = 42.9% and = 27.6%) than Kateh method (As = 26.9%, Pb = 26.9% and = 20.9%). Additionally, by increasing of rice soaking time from 1 to 12 h, the toxic metals removal was increased up to 37.1%, 42.6% and 16.6% for As, Pb and Cd, respectively. Although the toxic metals reduction was such that the non-carcinogenic risk was regarded as acceptable level after all processes, for arsenic, these reductions did not lower the carcinogenic risk to an acceptable level. Finally, it is suggested that Tehran households, after washing and soaking to 5 h, then cook it by rinse method.

We describe in this paper the experimental procedure, the data treatment and the quantification of the black body correction: an experimental approach to compensate for scattering and systematic biases in quantitative neutron imaging based on experimental data. The correction algorithm is based on two steps; estimation of the scattering component and correction using an enhanced normalization formula. The method incorporates correction terms into the image normalization procedure, which usually only includes open beam and dark current images (open beam correction). Our aim is to show its efficiency and reproducibility: we detail the data treatment procedures and quantitatively investigate the effect of the correction. Its implementation is included within the open source CT reconstruction software MuhRec. The performance of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated using simulated and experimental CT datasets acquired at the ICON and NEUTRA beamlines at the Paul Scherrer Institut.

In order to break the high operating cost bottleneck of electrochemical treatment of aqueous flutriafol (FTF), an emerging fungicide, a novel three-dimensional ordered macroporous PbO2 (3DOM-PbO2) filter was designed to facilitate mass transfer. The effects of operating parameters, including current density, flow rate and initial concentration on FTF electrooxidation performance were investigated using conventional flat Ti/PbO2 (F-Ti/PbO2) and 3DOM-PbO2 filters, with primary objective being the development of appropriate parameters for FTF treatment. The results indicated that the FTF removal efficiency on 3DOM-PbO2 filter was improved by 2.8 times compared to that on F-Ti/PbO2 at 5 mA cm-2, 10 ml s-1 and 100 mg L-1 FTF. The corresponding electrical energy consumption was reduced by 2.7 times, ` TOC removal and mineralization current efficiency were enhanced by 4.9 and 4.8 times, respectively. Furthermore, aromatic intermediates, nitrogenous compounds and carboxylic acids were identified as main byproducts using experimental method combined with quantum chemical calculations. Then, a possible pathway of FTF degradation on 3DOM-PbO2 was proposed. Finally, the acute toxicity results showed that toxicity of the byproducts first increases and then decreases through the proposed route. LC50,48 h value of FTF wastewater increased 35%-70% on the 3DOM-PbO2 filter, indicating a significant biodegradability enhancement.
