RESUMEN

Omicron generally causes milder disease than previous strains of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), especially in fully vaccinated individuals. However, incompletely vaccinated children may develop Omicron-related complications such as those affecting the central nervous system. To characterize the spectrum of clinical manifestations of neuro-COVID and to identify potential biomarkers associated with clinical outcomes, we recruited 15 children hospitalized for Omicron-related neurological manifestations in three hospitals in Hong Kong (9 boys and 6 girls aged 1-13 years). All were unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated. Fourteen (93.3%) were admitted for convulsion, including benign febrile seizure (n = 7), complex febrile seizure (n = 2), seizure with fever (n = 3), and recurrent breakthrough seizure (n = 2), and the remaining nonconvulsive patient developed encephalopathic state with impaired consciousness. None of the seven children with benign febrile seizure and six of eight children with other neurological manifestations had residual deficits at 9-month follow-up. SARS-CoV-2 RNA was undetectable in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens of seven patients who underwent lumbar puncture. Spike-and-wave/sharp waves affecting the frontal lobes were detected in four of seven (57.1%) patients who underwent electroencephalogram. Children with Omicron-related neurological manifestations had significantly higher blood levels of IL-6 (p < 0.001) and CHI3L1 (p = 0.022) than healthy controls, and higher CSF levels of IL-6 (p = 0.002) than children with non-COVID-19-related febrile illnesses. Higher CSF-to-blood ratios of IL-8 and CHI3L1 were associated with longer length of stay, whereas higher ratios of IL-6 and IL-8 were associated with higher blood tau level. The role of CSF:blood ratio of IL-6, IL-8, and CHI3L1 as prognostic markers for neuro-COVID should be further evaluated.

AIM: To investigate the association between the risk of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and preterm birth and determine how postnatal complications in children born preterm is associated with the risk of ADHD. METHOD: This population-based cohort study used data from the Hong Kong electronic medical records. We followed 359 614 children (48% female; 6-17 years old, mean 11 years 7 months, SD 3 years 2 months) born in public hospitals in Hong Kong from 1st January 2004 to 31st December 2014 and collected medical records and demographic details for mothers and children until 11th November 2020. RESULTS: The risk of ADHD was 4.0% in children born at term and 5.1% in children born preterm. The odds ratio for ADHD was 2.08 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.64-2.64) for children born extremely preterm, 1.64 (95% CI 1.46-1.85) for children born very preterm, and 1.15 (95% CI 1.08-1.23) for children born late preterm. Among preterm postnatal complications, only early respiratory disease, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), and intraventricular haemorrhage were significant predictors of ADHD after controlling for preterm birth, other risk factors, and sociodemographic variables. The excess risk of ADHD among children born very preterm or late preterm could be partly explained by respiratory disease. ROP partially mediated the risk of ADHD in children born very preterm. INTERPRETATION: Children born preterm in all subcategories, from extremely preterm to late preterm, have increased risk of ADHD. Early respiratory infection partially mediates the risk of ADHD in children born preterm.

The retinoblastoma protein (pRb) functions as a cell cycle regulator controlling G1 to S phase transition and plays critical roles in tumour suppression. It is frequently inactivated in various tumours. The functions of pRb are tightly regulated, where post-translational modifications (PTMs) play crucial roles, including phosphorylation, ubiquitination, SUMOylation, acetylation and methylation. Most PTMs on pRb are reversible and can be detected in non-cancerous cells, playing an important role in cell cycle regulation, cell survival and differentiation. Conversely, altered PTMs on pRb can give rise to anomalies in cell proliferation and tumourigenesis. In this review, we first summarize recent findings pertinent to how individual PTMs impinge on pRb functions. As many of these PTMs on pRb were published as individual articles, we also provide insights on the coordination, either collaborations and/or competitions, of the same or different types of PTMs on pRb. Having a better understanding of how pRb is post-translationally modulated should pave the way for developing novel and specific therapeutic strategies to treat various human diseases.

BACKGROUND: Opioid-induced respiratory depression (OIRD) is common on the medical and surgical wards and is associated with increased morbidity and health care costs. While previous studies have investigated risk factors for OIRD, the role of race remains unclear. We aim to investigate the association between race and OIRD occurrence on the medical/surgical ward. METHODS: This is a post hoc analysis of the PRediction of Opioid-induced respiratory Depression In patients monitored by capnoGraphY (PRODIGY) trial; a prospective multinational observational blinded study of 1335 general ward patients who received parenteral opioids and underwent blinded capnography and oximetry monitoring to identify OIRD episodes. For this study, demographic and perioperative data, including race and comorbidities, were analyzed and assessed for potential associations with OIRD. Univariable χ 2 and Mann-Whitney U tests were used. Stepwise selection of all baseline and demographic characteristics was used in the multivariable logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: A total of 1253 patients had sufficient racial data (317 Asian, 158 Black, 736 White, and 42 other races) for inclusion. The incidence of OIRD was 60% in Asians (N = 190/317), 25% in Blacks (N = 40/158), 43% in Whites (N = 316/736), and 45% (N = 19/42) in other races. Baseline characteristics varied significantly: Asians were older, more opioid naïve, and had higher opioid requirements, while Blacks had higher incidences of heart failure, obesity, and smoking. Stepwise multivariable logistic regression revealed that Asians had increased risk of OIRD compared to Blacks (odds ratio [OR], 2.49; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.54-4.04; P = .0002) and Whites (OR, 1.38; 95% CI, 1.01-1.87; P = .0432). Whites had a higher risk of OIRD compared to Blacks (OR, 1.81; 95% CI, 1.18-2.78; P = .0067). The model's area under the curve was 0.760 (95% CI, 0.733-0.787), with a Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness-of-fit test P value of .23. CONCLUSIONS: This post hoc analysis of PRODIGY found a novel association between Asian race and increased OIRD incidence. Further study is required to elucidate its underlying mechanisms and develop targeted care pathways to reduce OIRD in susceptible populations.

The choriocapillaris plays a considerable role in the normal physiology of the eye as well as in various diseases. Assessing the changes in the choriocapillaris can therefore provide important information about normal ageing and pathogenesis of visual impairment, and even some systemic diseases. In vivo imaging of the choriocapillaris has evolved from non-depth resolved, dye-based angiography to advanced, high-resolution optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). However, the intricate microvascular networks within the choriocapillaris are still beyond the resolving limits of most OCTA instruments. Knowledge of histology, meticulous image acquisition methods, recognition of artefact and post-acquisition processing techniques are necessary for optimising OCTA choriocapillaris images. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of the choriocapillaris provide clinical information in age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy (DR), pathologic myopia and central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). Furthermore, studies have revealed choriocapillaris changes in posterior uveitis that are correlated with treatment outcome and have important prognostic significance. In addition to retinal diseases, choriocapillaris changes have been observed in systemic vascular diseases and complications associated with pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this study was to study changes in the median nerve, retinaculum, and carpal tunnel on MRI after successful endoscopic carpal tunnel release (ECTR). SUBJECTS AND METHODS. In this prospective study, 35 wrists in 32 patients (five men, 27 women; mean age, 56.7 ± 6.8 [SD] years) with nerve conduction test-confirmed primary carpal tunnel syndrome were evaluated from May 2013 to September 2016. Clinical scores ranging from 0 to 4 (no improvement to symptoms completely resolved) and MRI morphologic features of median nerve and carpal tunnel were evaluated at baseline and 3 and 12 months after ECTR. The paired t test was used to compare MRI parameters before and after ECTR and their relationships to clinical improvement scores. RESULTS. All patients' conditions improved after ECTR with mean clinical improvement scores of 2.94 ± 1.0 at 3 months and 3.49 ± 0.56 at 12 months. Although median nerve swelling did decrease proximally, the nerve remained swollen (> 15 mm2) and flattened in all areas, even 12 months after ECTR. Additional changes occurred in median nerve caliber-change ratio, relative signal intensity, and carpal tunnel cross-sectional area. A retinacular gap was present in 33 (94%) wrists 3 months and six (17%) wrists 12 months after ECTR, and increased retinacular bowing persisted. CONCLUSION. After ECTR, undue swelling and flattening of the median nerve persist as long as 12 months after surgery, even in patients with a good surgical outcome. One should be wary of using these MRI findings as signs of persistent neural compression. The retinaculum reforms in most patients within 12 months of surgery but with a more bowed configuration.

Background: Current educational interventions and teaching for acute deteriorations seem to address acute care learning in discreet segments. Technology enhanced and team training methodologies are in vogue though well studied in the nursing profession, teaching avenues for junior 'doctors in training' seem to be a lacuna.Aims: The BEME systematic review was designed to (1) appraise the existing published evidence on educational interventions that are intended for 'doctors in training' to teach early recognition and prompt escalation in acute clinical deteriorations (2) to synthesise evidence & to evaluate educational effectiveness.Methodology: The method applied was a descriptive, justification & clarification review. Databases searched included PubMed, PsycINFO, Science Direct and Scopus for original research and grey literature with no restrictions to year or language. Abstract review, full text decisions and data extraction were completed by two primary coders with final consensus by a third reviewer.Results: 5592 titles and abstracts were chosen after removal of 905 duplications. After exclusion of 5555 studies, 37 full text articles were chosen for coding. 22 studies met final criteria of educational effectiveness, relevance to acute care. Educational platforms varied from didactics to blended learning approaches, small group teaching sessions, simulations, live & cadaveric tissue training, virtual environments and insitu team-based training. Translational outcomes with reduction in long term (up to 3-6 years) morbidity & mortality with financial savings were reported by 18% (4/22) studies. Interprofessional training were reported in 41% (9/22) of studies. Recent evidence demonstrated effectiveness of virtual environment and mobile game-based learning.Conclusions: There were significant improvements in teaching initiatives with focus on observable behaviours and translational real patient outcomes. Serious game-based learning and virtual multi-user collaborative environments might enhance individual learners' cognitive deliberate practice. Acute care learning continuum with programmatic acute care portfolios could be a promise of the future.

PURPOSE: Portal vein (PV) embolization (PVE) is traditionally performed via a PV sheath with selective embolization of PV branches. Here, the efficacy and safety of PVE with the use of only an 18-gauge needle is reported. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Consecutive patients who underwent PVE from 2009 through 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. Forty-five patients (mean age, 60 y ± 7.6; 38 men) underwent 45 PVE procedures. Hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma, and metastases accounted for 26 (58%), 13 (29%), and 6 (13%) patients, respectively. PVE was performed by puncturing a branch of right PV with an 18-gauge needle under US guidance. Via the same needle, direct portography was performed, followed by PVE with an N-butyl cyanoacrylate/Lipiodol mixture. Percentage increase of future liver remnant (FLR) volume and increase in ratio of FLR to total liver volume were estimated as measures of efficacy. Complications were reported according to Society of Interventional Radiology classification. Fluoroscopy time, procedure time, and dose-area product (DAP) were recorded. RESULTS: Technical success rate was 100%. The median DAP, fluoroscopy time, and procedure time were 74,387 mGy·cm2 (IQR, 90,349 mGy·cm2), 3.5 min (IQR, 2.10 min), and 24 min (IQR, 10.5 min). Among the 23 patients with complete CT volumetry data, mean increase in the ratio of FLR to total liver volume and percentage increase of FLR volume were 12.5% ± 7.7 and 50% ± 33, respectively. There were 3 minor complications (asymptomatic nonocclusive emboli in FLR) and 3 major complications (1 hepatic vein emboli, 1 subphrenic collection, and 1 hepatic infarct). CONCLUSIONS: PVE via a sheathless 18-gauge needle approach is feasible, with satisfactory FLR hypertrophy.

Due to their multiple advantages, piezoceramic materials have been widely used in structural health monitoring (SHM). Piezoceramic patch-based smart aggregate (SA) and spherical piezoceramic-based smart aggregate (SSA) have been developed for damage detection of concrete structures. However, the stress waves generated by these two types of transducers are limited by their geometry and are unsuitable for use in two-dimensional concrete structures (e.g., shear walls, floors and cement concrete pavements). In this paper, a novel embeddable tubular smart aggregate (TSA) based on a piezoceramic tube was designed, fabricated and tested for use in two-dimensional (2D) structures. Due to its special geometry, radially uniform stress waves can be generated, and thus the TSA is suitable for damage detection in planar structures. The suitability of the transducer for use in structural health monitoring was investigated by characterizing the ability of the transducer to transmit and measure stress waves. Three experiments, including impedance analysis, time of arrival analysis and sweep frequency analysis, were conducted to test the proposed TSA. The experimental results show that the proposed TSA is suitable for monitoring the health condition of two-dimensional concrete structures.

The negative pressure wave (NPW) signals generated by a pipeline leakage often have a long signal duration. When these signals are utilized to compute the leakage position, the long signal duration will result in a large area being considered as leakage area. The localization resolution is low. A novel high-resolution localization algorithm is developed for pipeline leakage detection using piezoceramic transducers in this paper. The proposed algorithm utilizes multiple temporal convolutions to decrease the localization functional values at the points close to the leakage, in order to reduce the range of the leakage area revealed by the proposed algorithm. As a result, the localization resolution is improved. A measured experiment was conducted to study the proposed algorithm. In the experiment, the proposed algorithm was used to monitor a 55.8 m pressurized pipeline with two controllable valves and two Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) sensors. With the aid of the piezoceramic sensor, the experimental results show that the proposed algorithm results in a resolution which is better than that of the traditional method.

The bolted spherical joint (BSJ) has wide applications in various space grid structures. The bar and the bolted sphere are connected by the high-strength bolt inside the joint. High-strength bolt is invisible outside the joint, which causes the difficulty in monitoring the bolt looseness. Moreover, the bolt looseness leads to the reduction of the local stiffness and bearing capacity for the structure. In this regard, this study used the electro-mechanical impedance (EMI) technique and back propagation neural networks (BPNNs) to monitor the bolt looseness inside the BSJ. Therefore, a space grid specimen having bolted spherical joints and tubular bars was considered for experimental evaluation. Different torques levels were applied on the sleeve to represent different looseness degrees of joint connection. As the torque levels increased, the looseness degrees of joint connection increased correspondingly. The lead zirconate titanate (PZT) patch was used and integrated with the tubular bar due to its strong piezoelectric effect. The root-mean-square deviation (RMSD) of the conductance signatures for the PZT patch were used as the looseness-monitoring indexes. Taking RMSD values of sub-frequency bands and the looseness degrees as inputs and outputs respectively, the BPNNs were trained and tested in twenty repeated experiments. The experimental results show that the formation of the bolt looseness can be detected according to the changes of looseness-monitoring indexes, and the degree of bolt looseness by the trained BPNNs. Overall, this research demonstrates that the proposed structural health monitoring (SHM) technique is feasible for monitoring the looseness of bolted spherical connection in space grid structures.

Stress wave-based communication has great potential for succeeding in subsea environments where many conventional methods would otherwise face excessive difficulty, and it can benefit logging well by using the drill string as a conduit for stress wave propagation. To achieve stress wave communication, a new stress wave-based pulse position modulation (PPM) communication system is designed and implemented to transmit data through pipeline structures with the help of piezoceramic transducers. This system consists of both hardware and software components. The hardware is composed of a piezoceramic transducer that can generate powerful stress waves travelling along a pipeline, upon touching, and a PPM signal generator that drives the piezoceramic transducer. Once the transducer is in contact with a pipeline surface, the generator integrated with an amplifier is utilized to excite the piezoceramic transducer with a voltage signal that is modulated to encode the information. The resulting vibrations of the transducer generates stress waves that propagate throughout the pipeline. Meanwhile, piezoceramic sensors mounted on the pipeline convert the stress waves to electric signals and the signal can be demodulated. In order to enable the encoding and decoding of information in the stress wave, a PPM-based communication protocol was integrated into the software system. A verification experiment demonstrates the functionality of the developed system for stress wave communication using piezoceramic transducers and the result shows that the data transmission speed of this new communication system can reach 67 bits per second (bps).

BACKGROUND: Among all in-breast tumor recurrences (IBTR) following breast-conserving therapy (BCT), some comprise metachronous new primaries (NPs) while others are true recurrences (TRs). Establishing this distinction remains a challenge. METHODS: We studied 3932 women who underwent BCT for stage I-III breast cancer from 1998 to 2008. Of these, 115 (2.9%) had an IBTR. Excluding patients with inoperable/unresectable recurrences or simultaneous distant metastases, 81 patients with isolated IBTR comprised the study population. An IBTR was categorized as an NP rather than a TR if it included an in situ component. The log-rank test and Kaplan-Meier method were used to evaluate disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS), and univariate and multivariate analyses were performed using Cox proportional hazards regression models. RESULTS: At a median of 64.5 months from IBTR diagnosis, 28 of 81 patients had DFS events. Five-year DFS was 43.1% in the TR group (p = 0.0001) versus 80.3% in the NP group, while 5-year OS was 59.7% in the TR group versus 91.7% among those with NPs (p = 0.0011). On univariate analysis, increasing tumor size, high grade, positive margins, lymphovascular invasion, node involvement, lack of axillary surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and IBTR type (TR vs. NP) were significantly associated with worse DFS. Controlling for tumor size and margin status, TRs remained significantly associated with lower DFS (hazard ratio 3.717, 95% confidence interval 1.607-8.595, p = 0.002). CONCLUSION: The presence of an in situ component is associated with prognosis among patients with IBTR following BCT and may be useful in differentiating TRs and NPs.

Multiphoton pumped stimulated emission requires simultaneous absorption of photons for the creation of population inversion to sustain optical amplification. Recently, stimulated emission by simultaneous absorption of up to five photons has been realized. To achieve more diverse nonlinear optical applications, it is desired to have more photons involved in the upconversion process. Here, we demonstrate unambiguously frequency upconverted amplified spontaneous emission and lasing via simultaneous six-photon absorption from inorganic perovskite. Our finding allows the utilization of inorganic perovskite as the novel alternative for higher-order multiphoton fluorescent applications.

The influence of plasmonic effect on the upconversion emission characteristics of Yb3+-Er3+-Tm3+ tridoped ß-NaYF4 hexagonal microrods is studied. Upconversion spontaneous emission can be improved by 10 times if the microrod is deposited on an Ag-coated substrate. The enhancement is also dependent on the emission wavelength and the polarization of the excitation source. Furthermore, upconversion lasing is supported by the geometry of the microrods via the formation of whispering gallery modes. The corresponding excitation threshold can also be reduced by 50% through the influence of plasmonic effect, the coupling between the whispering gallery modes and the surface plasmonic resonance modes.

BACKGROUND: Xenon has been shown to have positive neurologic effects in various pre-clinical models. This study systematically reviewed the randomized-controlled trials (RCTs) investigating neurologic and cognitive outcomes associated with the clinical use of xenon. METHODS: We searched PubMed, CENTRAL, EMBASE, CINAHL, elibrary.ru (for Russian studies), Google Scholar (for Russian studies), and Wanfang (for Chinese studies) for appropriate RCTs comparing neurologic or cognitive outcomes after clinical use of xenon with control treatment or with other anesthetic agents. RESULTS: Seventeen RCTs met the inclusion criteria. Two studies investigated the effects of xenon plus therapeutic hypothermia to treat neonatal asphyxia or out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Compared with therapeutic hypothermia alone, xenon and therapeutic hypothermia reduced cerebral white matter abnormalities after cardiac arrest but had no effect on neurocognitive outcome and mortality. Xenon had no added value when used to treat neonatal asphyxia. Thirteen RCTs compared neurocognitive effects of xenon with other anesthetic agents in surgical patients. While xenon may be associated with improved short-term (< three hours) cognitive outcome, no medium-term (six hours to three months) advantage was observed, and longer-term data are lacking. No differences in biochemical (S-100ß, neuron-specific enolase) and neuropsychologic (attentional performance) outcomes were found with xenon compared with other anesthetic drugs. Finally, two studies suggest that brief, intermittent administration of sub-anesthetic doses of xenon to patients during the acute phase of substance withdrawal may improve neurocognitive outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Despite promising pre-clinical results, the evidence for positive clinical neurologic and cognitive outcomes associated with xenon administration is modest. Nevertheless, there is some evidence to suggest that xenon may be associated with better neurologic outcomes compared with the standard of care therapy in certain specific clinical situations. More clinical trials are needed to determine any potential benefit linked to xenon administration.

In recent years, the piezoceramic transducer-enabled active sensing technique has been extensively applied to structural damage detection and health monitoring, in civil engineering. Being abundant and renewable, timber has been widely used as a building material in many countries. However, one of the more challenging applications of timber, in construction, is the potential damage caused by moisture. Increased moisture may cause easier warping of timber components and encourage corrosion of integrated metal members, on top of potentially causing rot and decay. However, despite numerous efforts to inspect and monitor the moisture content of timber, there lacks a method that can provide truly real time, quantitative, and non-invasive measurement of timber moisture. Thus, the research presented in this paper investigated the feasibility of moisture-content monitoring using an active sensing approach, as enabled by a pair of the Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) transducers bonded on the surface of a timber specimen. Using a pair of transducers in an active sensing scheme, one patch generated a designed stress wave, while another patch received the signal. While the active sensing was active, the moisture content of the timber specimen was gradually increased from 0% to 60% with 10% increments. The material properties of the timber correspondingly changed under varying timber moisture content, resulting in a measurable differential in stress wave attenuation rates among the different specimens used. The experimental results indicated that the received signal energy and the moisture content of the timber specimens show a parabolic relationship. Finally, the feasibility and reliability of the presented method, for monitoring timber moisture content, are discussed.

PURPOSE: To evaluate quantitatively the choroidal vascularity in polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) and neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) patients compared to healthy controls. METHODS: All eyes underwent swept source optical coherence tomography (OCT), and choroidal images were binarized into blood vessels lumen and stroma. The choroidal vascular index (CVI) was defined as the ratio of luminal area (LA) over total choroidal area of the subfoveal region with a width of 1500 µm. RESULTS: The study included 73 patients with neovascular AMD or PCV with mean ± standard deviation (SD) age of 71.8 ± 9.3 years, which was older than the mean age of 65.1 ± 10.8 years of 72 healthy eyes from control group (p < 0.01). The 44 PCV eyes had significantly higher mean SFCT of 214.23 ± 95.21 µm than neovascular AMD eyes (172.74 ± 96.48 µm, p = 0.03) and greater luminal area (0.23 ± 0.09 mm2 vs. 0.19 ± 0.08 mm2, p = 0.05). After adjusting for age, axial length, and gender in multivariate regression analysis, the SFCT of PCV and neovascular AMD eyes were not significantly different from healthy eyes (195.55 ± 93.11 µm), but the CVI of both PCV (64.94 ± 5.43%, p = 0.01) and neovascular AMD (62.54 ± 5.57%, p = <0.01) were significantly lower than control (68.53 ± 5.91%). CONCLUSION: Despite physiological changes of choroidal vasculature due to aging, the choroidal morphology is different in PCV, neovascular AMD and healthy eyes, which has implication on disease pathogenesis.

Rock bolts have been widely used as rock reinforcing members in underground coal mine roadways and tunnels. Failures of rock bolts occur as a result of overloading, corrosion, seismic burst and bad grouting, leading to catastrophic economic and personnel losses. Monitoring the health condition of the rock bolts plays an important role in ensuring the safe operation of underground mines. This work presents a brief introduction on the types of rock bolts followed by a comprehensive review of rock bolt monitoring using smart sensors. Smart sensors that are used to assess rock bolt integrity are reviewed to provide a firm perception of the application of smart sensors for enhanced performance and reliability of rock bolts. The most widely used smart sensors for rock bolt monitoring are the piezoelectric sensors and the fiber optic sensors. The methodologies and principles of these smart sensors are reviewed from the point of view of rock bolt integrity monitoring. The applications of smart sensors in monitoring the critical status of rock bolts, such as the axial force, corrosion occurrence, grout quality and resin delamination, are highlighted. In addition, several prototypes or commercially available smart rock bolt devices are also introduced.

Corrosion of concrete reinforcement members has been recognized as a predominant structural deterioration mechanism for steel reinforced concrete structures. Many corrosion detection techniques have been developed for reinforced concrete structures, but a dependable one is more than desired. Acoustic emission technique and fiber optic sensing have emerged as new tools in the field of structural health monitoring. In this paper, we present the results of an experimental investigation on corrosion monitoring of a steel reinforced mortar block through combined acoustic emission and fiber Bragg grating strain measurement. Constant current was applied to the mortar block in order to induce accelerated corrosion. The monitoring process has two aspects: corrosion initiation and crack propagation. Propagation of cracks can be captured through corresponding acoustic emission whereas the mortar expansion due to the generation of corrosion products will be monitored by fiber Bragg grating strain sensors. The results demonstrate that the acoustic emission sources comes from three different types, namely, evolution of hydrogen bubbles, generation of corrosion products and crack propagation. Their corresponding properties are also discussed. The results also show a good correlation between acoustic emission activity and expansive strain measured on the specimen surface.
