RESUMEN

The Australian and New Zealand Clinician Educator Network (ANZCEN) is a collaborative interprofessional group developed to promote the development of education in critical care healthcare practice. In November 2018, 45 critical care practitioners met at the first ANZCEN Unconference. In an unconference, the participants drive the agenda, and learning occurs from the active process of engaging in a community of practice. The aim of this unconference was to develop an innovative approach to learning through a collaborative framework with interprofessional representation across critical care specialties. Four key themes were identified in the unconference as drivers of interprofessional critical care educational priorities: interprofessional learning, workplace learning, faculty development, research, and scholarship. In this discussion paper, we describe our experiences organizing, participating in, and evaluating an unconference, and we examine its usefulness as a medium for promoting the interprofessional learning agenda in critical care. We hope that the processes outlined in this discussion paper will provide a useful resource for other clinicians who are considering developing an unconference. Finally, we argue that the unconference offers a unique and important model for future education of critical care practitioners where the emphasis on collaboration and communication through interprofessional learning and practice will be required to improve health outcomes and promote a patient-centered model of care.

Advances in translational science require innovative solutions, and engagement of productive transdisciplinary teams play a critical role. While various forms of scientific meetings have long provided venues for sharing scientific findings and generating new collaborations, many conferences lack opportunities for active discussions. We describe the use of an Un-Meeting to foster innovative translational science teams through engaged discussions across multidisciplinary groups addressing a shared theme. The Un-Meeting was delivered by the University of Rochester Center for Leading Innovation and Collaboration, the national coordinating center for the National Institutes of Health Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) program. This pilot CTSA program Un-Meeting focused on engaging translational scientists, policy-makers, community members, advocates, and public health professionals to address the opioid crisis. The participant-driven format leveraged lightning talks, attendee-led idea generation, and extensive breakout discussions to foster multidisciplinary networking. Results indicated participation by a broad set of attendees and a high level of networking during the meeting. These results, coupled with the growth of the Un-Meeting across the CTSA Consortium, provide practices and models to potentially advance team and translational science. While future work will further assess the impact of Un-Meetings, this format presents a promising approach to enhance translational science.

Many conferences and in-person meetings have transitioned to virtual platforms in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Here, we share strategies and lessons learned from organizing an international virtual unconventional conference, or 'unconference'. The event focused on how early career researchers can advocate for systemic improvements in scientific publishing and research culture. The virtual unconference had three main components: (1) a virtual networking event, (2) asynchronous virtual brainstorming, and (3) a virtual open space, where participants could join or lead in-depth discussions. The unconference format was participant-driven and encouraged dialogue and collaboration between 54 attendees from 20 countries on six continents. Virtual brainstorming allowed participants to contribute to discussions at times that were convenient for them. Activity was consistently high throughout the 48 hours of virtual brainstorming and continued into the next day. The results of these discussions are collaboratively summarized in a paper entitled Empowering Early Career Researchers to Improve Science, co-authored by the unconference participants . We hope that this method report will help others to organize asynchronous virtual unconferences, while also providing new strategies for participant-driven activities that could be integrated into conventional virtual conferences.

There is increasing interest in Barcamps and Unconferences as an educational approach during traditional medical education conferences. Our group has now accumulated extensive experience in these formats over a number of years in different educational venues. We present a summary of observations and lessons learned about what works and what doesn't.

RESUMEN

Brainhack events offer a novel workshop format with participant-generated content that caters to the rapidly growing open neuroscience community. Including components from hackathons and unconferences, as well as parallel educational sessions, Brainhack fosters novel collaborations around the interests of its attendees. Here we provide an overview of its structure, past events, and example projects. Additionally, we outline current innovations such as regional events and post-conference publications. Through introducing Brainhack to the wider neuroscience community, we hope to provide a unique conference format that promotes the features of collaborative, open science.
