Corn is the second most widely farmed grain for human consumption. Low corn productivity due to damage caused by pests has led to using pesticides to control pest infestations. However, the uncontrolled application of pesticides on corn harms both environmental and human health. Accordingly, field experiments followed good agricultural practices to investigate the dissipation pattern and terminal residues of chlorfenapyr and methomyl in corn and compare the values with established safety limits. Gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometer coupled with the quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe technique was used to analyze residues of chlorfenapyr and methomyl in corn. The average recoveries varied from 94% to 105%, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 8%-13% for chlorfenapyr and from 99% to 111%, with RSDs of 10-16% for methomyl. Chlorfenapyr and methomyl residues degraded in corn following a first-order kinetic model, with an estimated half-life (t1/2) of 3.9 and 2.8 days, respectively, and significant degradation (91.4%-98.1.5%, respectively) after 14 days. Although the maximum residue limits of chlorfenapyr and methomyl for corn are yet to be formulated in Egypt, the long-term dietary risk for those pesticides was acceptable, with arisk quotient < 100%, according to the national assessments. These findings are required to guide the correct and safe application of these insecticides in Egypt.

A derivatization method combined with high-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection (HPLC-FLD) was used to evaluate the dissipation, residue distribution and risk assessment of emamectin benzoate in whole longan and pulp. The average recoveries were 82-111% with relative standard deviation (RSD) less than 11%. The limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.001 mg/kg in longan and pulp. The half-lives were 3.3-4.2 days. The terminal residues in whole longan were <0.001-0.025 mg/kg applied two and three times at two levels of dosage with PHIs of 10, 14, and 21 days. The residues in whole longan had a higher quantity than those in the pulp, and the terminal residues of pulp were all lower than LOQ (0.001 mg/kg). The chronic risk of emamectin benzoate was not negligible to humans depending on ADI% value, which was higher than 1; and the acute risk was acceptable to the consumer. This study could provide guidance for the safe use of emamectin benzoate in longan and serve as a reference for the establishment of maximum residue limits (MRLs) in China.

This report presents the development of a highly effective method employing high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) to investigate chlorantraniliprole's dissipation, risk assessment, and residue distribution in whole lychee fruit and its pulp. Mean recoveries of the samples ranged from 80 to 105%, exhibiting a relative standard deviation (RSD) of below 8%. The limits of quantification (LOQ) for lychee and pulp were determined as 0.001 mg/kg, and half-lives (t1/2) ranged from 8.0 to 12.2 days. Terminal residue concentrations in whole litchi and pulp were determined as 0.008-0.45 mg/kg and ≤0.001 mg/kg. These residues were treated twice and thrice at two different dosage levels with pre-harvest intervals (PHIs) of 7, 14, and 21 days. The potential chronic risk posed by chlorantraniliprole to humans was non-negligible, as indicated by the risk quotient (RQ) value not exceeding 1. Therefore, this study provides significant fresh data about the safe application of chlorantraniliprole in the production of lychee, which will help China develop maximum residual limits (MRLs).

The present study describes the development of a highly effective approach for determining the residue distribution and dissipation of trifloxystrobin and tebuconazole, and their risk assessment in brown rice, husk, straw, and grain using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS). The current study provides considerable novel information regarding the safe utilization of a mixture of trifloxystrobin and tebuconazole in paddy production. The samples demonstrated a range of mean recoveries between 72% and 86%, with a 1.1-9.2% relative standard deviation (RSD). The limits of quantification (LOQ) and half-lives (t1/2) for brown rice, husk, straw, and grain were, respectively, established to be 0.001-0.01 mg/kg and 4.1-7.7 days. The concentrations of terminal residues in the brown rice, husk, straw, and grain were, respectively, found to be 0.02-0.05, 0.03-0.11, 0.02-0.07, and 0.02-0.05 mg/kg after being treated twice at 168.75 g a.i./ha with 21 and 28 days of pre-harvest intervals (PHIs). Trifloxystrobin and tebuconazole presented a non-negligible chronic risk to human subjects, as evidenced by a risk quotient (RQ) value of less than 1.

BACKGROUND: Ethiprole has been registered to control planthoppers in rice fields for many years in Asia. However, its dissipation and residues in rice under natural field conditions and health hazards are largely unclear. In the present study, a modified QuEChERS (i.e. Quick Easy Cheap Effective Rugged Safe) and high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method was established to detect ethiprole and its metabolites, ethiprole amide and ethiprole sulfone, in brown rice, rice husks, and rice straw. The field experiments were implemented in 12 representative provinces of China under Good Agricultural Practices aiming to investigate the fate and terminal residues of ethiprole and its metabolites in rice. Finally, the dietary risk of ethiprole was evaluated. RESULTS: The average recoveries of these analytes in all matrices were 86.4-99.0% with a repeatability of 0.575-9.38%. The limits of quantification for each compound were 0.01 mg kg-1 . Dissipation of ethiprole followed the single first-order, first + first-order, and first-order multi-compartment kinetic models with a half-life of 2.68-8.99 days in rice husks. The dissipation half-life of ethiprole combining all metabolites was 5.20-16.2 days in rice husks. The terminal residues of ethiprole and its metabolites at preharvest intervals of 21 days were < 0.011, 0.25, and 0.20 mg kg-1 in brown rice, rice husks, and rice straw, respectively. Ethiprole amide was undetectable in all matrices, and the risk quotient of ethiprole was far less than 100%. CONCLUSION: Ethiprole rapidly converted to ethiprole sulfone in rice, and ethiprole and ethiprole sulfone mainly remained in rice husks and straws. The dietary risk of ethiprole was acceptable for Chinese consumers. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND: Thiamethoxam is widely used to control pests in Chinese kale, popularly consumed leafy vegetables. The potential risk to the environment and human health has aroused much public concern. Therefore, it is important to investigate the degradation behavior, residue distribution and dietary risk assessment of thiamethoxam in Chinese kale. RESULTS: A sensitive analytical method for determination of thiamethoxam and its metabolite clothianidin residue in Chinese kale was established and validated through a quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) technique with ultra-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). The recoveries were 85.4-101.2% for thiamethoxam and 79.5-108.1% for clothianidin, with the relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 0.9-10.2% and 1.8-6.0%, respectively. For the dissipation kinetics, the data showed that thiamethoxam in Chinese kale was degraded with the half-lives of 4.1 to 4.5 days. In the terminal residue experiments, the residues of thiamethoxam were 0.017-0.357 mg kg-1 after application 2-3 times with a preharvest interval (PHI) of 7 days under the designed dosages. The chronic and acute dietary exposure assessment risk quotient (RQ) values of thiamethoxam in Chinese kale for different Chinese consumers were 0.08-0.19% and 0.05-0.12%, respectively, and those of clothianidin were 0.01-0.04% and 0.02-0.04%, respectively, all of the RQ values were lower than 100%. CONCLUSION: Thiamethoxam in Chinese kale was rapidly degraded following first-order kinetics models. The dietary risk of thiamethoxam and clothianidin through Chinese kale was negligible to consumers. The results from this study are important reference for Chinese governments to developing criteria for the safe and rational use of thiamethoxam, setting maximum residue levels (MRLs), monitoring the quality safety of agricultural products and protecting consumer health. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND: Thiophanate-methyl and its metabolite carbendazim are broad-spectrum fungicides used on many crops. The residues of these chemicals could result in potential environmental and human health problems. Therefore, investigations of the dissipation and residue behaviors of thiophanate-methyl and its metabolite carbendazim on cowpeas and associated dietary risk assessments are essential for the safety of agricultural products. RESULTS: A simple analytical approach using liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry was developed and validated for the determination of thiophanate-methyl and carbendazim concentrations in cowpeas. Good linearity (R2 > 0.998) was obtained, and the recoveries and relative standard deviations were 80.0-104.7% and 1.4-5.2%, respectively. The dissipation rates of thiophanate-methyl, carbendazim and total carbendazim were high (half-lives of 1.61-2.46 days) and varied in the field cowpea samples because of the different weather conditions and planting patterns. Based on the definition of thiophanate-methyl, the terminal residues of total carbendazim in cowpea samples were below the maximum residue limits set by Japan for other legumes. The acute and chronic risk quotients of three analytes were 0.0-27.6% in cowpea samples gathered from all terminal residue treatments, which were below 100%. CONCLUSION: An optimized approach for detecting thiophanate-methyl and carbendazim in cowpeas was applied for the investigation of field-trial samples. The potential acute and chronic dietary risks of thiophanate-methyl, carbendazim and total carbendazim to the health of Chinese consumers were low. These results could guide the safe and proper use of thiophanate-methyl in cowpeas and offer data for the dietary risk assessment of thiophanate-methyl in cowpeas. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND: Propiconazole is widely used to control fungal diseases in field crops, including celery and onion. The potential risk to the environment and human health has aroused much public concern. Therefore, it is significant to investigate the degradation behaviour, residue distribution, and dietary risk assessment of propiconazole in celery and onion. RESULTS: A sensitive analytical method for determination of propiconazole residue in celery and onion was established and validated through high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. The average recovery rate of propiconazole ranged from 85.7% to 101.8%, with a relative standard deviation of 2.1-6.3%. For the dissipation kinetics, the data showed that propiconazole in celery and onion was degraded, with half-lives of 6.1-6.2 days and 8.7-8.8 days respectively. In the terminal residue experiments, the residues of propiconazole were below 4.66 mg kg-1 in celery after application two or three times and were below 0.029 mg kg-1 in onion after application of three or four times with an interval of 14 days under the designed dosages. The chronic and acute dietary exposure assessments for propiconazole were valued by risk quotient, with all values being lower than 100%. CONCLUSION: Propiconazole in celery and onion was rapidly degraded following first-order kinetics models. The dietary risk of propiconazole through celery or onion was negligible to consumers. The study not only offers a valuable reference for reasonable usage of propiconazole on celery and onion, but also facilitates the establishment of maximum residue limits in China. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND: Fungicides are often applied to pears before they are kept in storage facilities. The scientific application of pesticides can reduce unnecessary exposure, which in turn could benefit both humans and the environment. RESULTS: We investigated dissipation behavior and residue distribution, and conducted risk assessments for prochloraz, pyraclostrobin, and tebuconazole in pears stored under different conditions using ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC). The recoveries of the three fungicides ranged from 76.5% to 114.5%, and the coefficients of variation were 1.0%-8.5%. The half-life (t1/2 ) ranges for degradation of the three fungicides in Dangshan Su pear peel were 8.8-13.9 days after storage at 25 °C and 99.0-346.6 days after storage at 2 °C. Among the three fungicides, tebuconazole had the lowest residue concentration in pear pulp (maximum of 0.226 mg·kg-1 ) and the longest half-life (≥ 231.0 days). Accordingly, among these fungicides, tebuconazole is the most suitable for the preservation of Dangshan Su pears during storage. Finally, we analyzed samples of six pear varieties from markets in China and found that the residue concentrations of the three fungicides in pear pulp and fruit met Chinese standards. CONCLUSION: The results provide a scientific basis for rationalizing the use of prochloraz, pyraclostrobin, and tebuconazole, and improving the safety of pears for eating. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND: Iprodione is considered to be an endocrine-disturbing pesticide, which could harm consumers. The garlic crop has three edible parts: the garlic, the green garlic, and the garlic shoot, which correspond to different stages of its growth. In this study, iprodione residue dissipation and distribution in these three edible parts were investigated, and dietary risk was evaluated. RESULTS: Iprodione residues were present in these samples in the following order: green garlic > garlic shoot > > garlic. The dissipation of iprodione in green garlic was slow with a half-life of 5.82-19.25 days. A very high RQchronic value of 207.35-407.30% suggested that the residual iprodione in green garlic had an unacceptable level of risk. Iprodione residue was significantly eliminated (59-90%) by an alkaline solution. The order for removing iprodione by soaking was the alkaline solutions (0.5% and 2% NaHCO3 ) > the acidic solutions (5% and 10% of vinegar) ≈ the neutral solutions (the 1% and 2% of table salt) > tap water. Processing factors (PFs) were <1, indicating that processing could decrease the iprodione residue level. CONCLUSION: This work could contribute to establishing maximum residue limits (MRLs) for iprodione in garlic, green garlic, and garlic shoots, and could provide guidance on the safe and appropriate use of iprodione in the garlic crop. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND: Cyromazine and acetamiprid are widely applied as pesticides in agriculture, causing increasing concerns about their residues in crops. In this study, cyromazine, acetamiprid and their mixture were applied to cowpea to investigate their degradation dynamics and perform a dietary risk assessment. RESULTS: The dissipation behavior of cyromazine and acetamiprid in the single- and mixed-pesticide groups followed first-order kinetics, with a linear correlation coefficient of 0.910 to 0.987. The half-lives of cyromazine and acetamiprid were 1.56-11.18 days in the four different matrices. The half-life of cyromazine in the mixed-pesticide group was similar to or even shorter than that in the single-pesticide group. The highest levels of cyromazine and acetamiprid in cowpea occurred with a preharvest interval of 7 days and after two or three applications. These levels are below the maximum residue limits recommended by the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture for cyromazine and acetamiprid in cowpea. The risk quotient of cyromazine and acetamiprid ranged from 0.0018 to 0.0418, and the national estimated short-term intake values of the cyromazine and acetamiprid were far below the acute reference dose as recommended by the European Food Safety Authority. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that the use of cyromazine and acetamiprid and a cyromazine-acetamiprid mixture in cowpea is safe under the Good Agricultural Practices for Chinese fields, and the use of a cyromazine-acetamiprid mixture affords even better results than the application of cyromazine alone. Moreover, the residue dynamics information will support the label claims for the application of cyromazine, acetamiprid and a cyromazine-acetamiprid mixture to cowpea fruit. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

A micro-liquid-liquid extraction (MLLE) technique coupled with liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis was established and validated to determine the residues of two macrocyclic lactone insecticides (spinetoram and spinosad) in green onion. The limit of quantification (LOQ) of the method, as demonstrated by the lowest acceptable recovery level, was 0.01 mg kg-1, and the obtained recoveries were 78.3-93.4% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) < 12.5%. The method was then applied for analyzing field samples collected after treatment with the tested insecticides under Egyptian open-field condition. The decline pattern, terminal residues, and dietary risk assessment of spinetoram and spinosad residues in green onion were evaluated for food safety. Spinetoram and spinosad residues' decline in green onion followed first-order kinetics with the half-lives of 1.2 and 1.42 days, respectively. Based on the results, the required period to reach their respective maximum residue limits (MRLs) was 1 and 0 days for spinetoram and spinosad residues in green onion, respectively, which indicates a short persistence level and high degradation rate. The results suggest that there is no unacceptable chronic or acute risk to human health from the consumption of green onion treated with spinetoram and spinosad according to the uses considered.

Flonicamid, a novel selective systemic pesticide, can effectively control a broad range of insect pests. However, the dissipation behaviors and the terminal residues of flonicamid and its metabolites in some crops and soils remain unclear. Herein, an easy, sensitive and reliable method using a modified QuEChERS extraction coupled with LC-MS/MS for the simultaneous analysis of flonicamid and its metabolites in cabbage and soil was developed. Based on this method, the dissipation behaviors of flonicamid and its metabolites as well as their persistence in cabbage and soil during harvest were investigated. Flonicamid degraded rapidly, and the half-lives of flonicamid only and total residues (the sum of flonicamid and its metabolites) were 1.49-4.59 and 1.97-4.99 days in cabbage, and 2.12-7.97 and 2.04-7.62 days in soil, respectively. When 50% flonicamid WG was sprayed once or twice at the recommended dose and 1.5-fold the recommended dose, the highest residues of total flonicamid in cabbage and soil from different pre-harvest intervals (3, 7 and 14 days) were 0.070 and 0.054â¯mgâ¯kg-1, respectively. The risk quotient (RQ) of flonicamid based on the consumption data from China was below 16.84%, indicating that the use of flonicamid is non-hazardous to humans. These results could not only guide the safe and responsible use of flonicamid in agriculture but also help the Chinese government establish the maximum residue level (MRL) for flonicamid in cabbage.

20% commercial suspension emulsion (SE) of (8% tetraconazole + 12% kresoxim-methyl), as a pre-registered product in China, was firstly investigated under Chinese greenhouse-field conditions. A MWCNTs-based QuEChERS method for simultaneous determination of tetraconazole and kresoxim-methyl in strawberry was developed and validated via RRLC-QqQ-MS/MS. On basis of this method, the dissipation behaviours, residue distributions and dietary risk probability of these fungicides in strawberry were further investigated for food safety. The dissipations of tetraconazole and kresoxim-methyl followed first-order kinetics with the half-lives of 8.0-18.2 days. The highest residues (HRs) of these fungicides in the supervised trials at the pre-harvest interval (PHI, 3 days) were below 0.8970mgkg-1. The total national estimated daily intake (NEDI) of tetraconazole and kresoxim-methy in strawberry at the PHI 3day was 0.2784mg and 0.4031mg, respectively, based on Chinese dietary pattern and terminal residue distributions under good agricultural practices (GAP) conditions. The risk quotients (RQs) of tetraconazole and kresoxim-methy at PHI 3 days were below 82.7% and 1.6%, respectively, showing that the evaluated strawberry exhibited an acceptably low dietary risk to consumers. The current study could not only guide reasonable usage of the formulation, but also facilitate the setting of maximum residue limits (MRLs) of tetraconazole in strawberry.

Fipronil is a persistent insecticide known to transfer into hen eggs from exposure from animal drinking water and feed, but some questions remain regarding its transfer behavior and distribution characteristics. Therefore, the dynamic metabolism, residue distribution and transfer factor (TF) of fipronil were investigated in 11 edible tissues of laying hens and eggs over 21 days. After a continuous low-dose drinking water exposure scenario, the sum of fipronil and all its metabolites (defined as fipronilT) quickly transferred to each edible tissue and gradually increased with exposure time. FipronilT residue in eggs first appeared at 3 days and then gradually increased. After a single high-dose feed exposure scenario, fipronilT residue in edible tissues first appeared after 2 h, quickly peaked at 1 day, and then gradually decreased. In eggs, fipronilT residue first appeared at 2 days, peaked 6-7 days and then gradually decreased. The TF values followed the order of the skin (0.30-0.73) > egg yolk (0.30-0.71) > bottom (0.21-0.59) after drinking water exposure, and the order of the skin (1.01-1.59) > bottom (0.75-1.1) > egg yolk (0.58-1.10) for feed exposure. Fipronil sulfone, a more toxic compound, was the predominant metabolite with higher levels distributed in the skin and bottom for both exposure pathways. FipronilT was distributed in egg yolks rather than in albumen owing to its lipophilicity, and the ratio of egg yolk to albumen may potentially reflect the time of exposure. The distinction is that the residues after feed exposure were much higher than that after drinking water exposure in edible tissues and eggs. The study highlights the residual characteristics of two exposure pathways, which would contribute to the tracing of contamination sources and risk assessment.

Grapes are among the most popular fruits globally, and insecticides are commonly used on grape farms. Sulfoxaflor, a novel sulfoximine insecticide that works against various insect pests, is extensively used in Egypt. Our field trials assessed the dynamics and final residues of sulfoxaflor in grapes and grape leaves grown in Egyptian environments with different application rates, including worst-case scenarios. A QuEChERS-based method with LC-MS/MS was used to analyze residues of sulfoxaflor in grapes and grape leaves. The limit of quantification (LOQ) was validated at 0.01 mgâ§kg-1. Sulfoxaflor residues are degraded in grapes and grape leaves according to a first-order kinetic model, with an estimated half-life (t1/2) of 7.04 and 7.7 days, respectively, and considerable degradation (74.68 and 72.16%, respectively) after 14 days. The final residues in grapes and grape leaves were below the Codex or EU maximum residue limit (MRL) (2 mgâ§kg-1) after 3 days of the recommended and high application rates. The findings showed that grapes and leaves treated with sulfoxaflor at the recommended rate are safe for humans 3 days after two or three consecutive treatments with intervals of 14 days. The current study should pave the way for implementing safe and appropriate sulfoxaflor use in grapes and grape leaves in Egypt.

Strawberries are a favorite fruit for most people, but the residues of pesticides on strawberries might be risky to human health. Tebufenpyrad and milbemectin are broad-spectrum acaricides with insecticide properties authorized for use on strawberries in Egypt. As a result, it is crucial to investigate their residues in the final product to ensure customers' safety. Consequently, field trials were conducted following the Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) to study the dissipation rate and terminal residues of tebufenpyrad and milbemectin on strawberries. Tebufenpyrad and milbemectin residues in strawberries declined due to first-order decay process, showing significant degradation (88.5% and 94.7%, respectively) after 14 days. Risk assessment study was carried out by comparing the national estimated daily intake (NEDI) to the acceptable daily intake (ADI). The results demonstrated that the dietary risk posed by the residues of tebufenpyrad and milbemectin in strawberry fruits was acceptable for consumers. It is envisaged that the current study's findings would support the safe application of tebufenpyrad and milbemectin to strawberries and perhaps other crops in Egypt and other countries with similar climatic conditions.

Locating exactly where trace explosive residue samples should be sought during sample collection at bomb scenes is not specified in the published literature or guidelines; in this area, it is generally acknowledged that forensic practices are based on tradition rather than evidence. This study investigated patterns in the spatial distribution of postblast 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazocyclohexane residue from a series of unconfined detonations, over a range of sampling sites, and at two different detonation heights. The amount of residue recovered from the sites decreased as a function of distance from the center of the explosion. [Correction added after online publication 27 December 2012: In the preceding sentence, "increased" was corrected to "decreased" to agree with the conclusion of the article.] As the height of the detonations increased, more residues were found from all sampling sites. The findings of this empirical study have a number of important practical implications including determining where residue samples are best sought at crime scenes.

Albendazole is a broad-spectrum fungicide that shows great potential in controlling fungal diseases in citrus. To quantify the dissipation behavior, residue distribution, and dietary risk of albendazole in citrus, we developed an UPLC-MS/MS analysis protocol. The average recovery rate of albendazole in whole citrus and citrus pulp ranged from 74 to 105% with an RSD of 3 to 8%, and a limit of quantification of 0.01 mg kg-1. The degradation half-lives were 2.8-3.0 and 5.7-17.0 days in whole citrus and citrus pulp, respectively, and the final residues of albendazole were <0.059 mg kg-1 with a risk quotient of <1. This study not only demonstrates that the dietary risk of albendazole in citrus is negligible, but also provides empirical data to establish the maximum residual limit (MRL) for the safe application of albendazole in citrus orchards to meet the requirements for food safety as well as international trade.

The dissipation, conversion and risk assessment of bifenazate and bifenazate-diazene in garlic plant were studied by a modified QuEChERS method coupled with UHPLC-MS/MS for the first time. Bifenazate dissipated rapidly in garlic chive and serpent garlic with the half-lives of 3.0-3.9 days and 6.1-6.9 days, respectively. Bifenazate residue on garlic (<0.01 mg/kg) was significantly lower than the other two matrices in the whole growing period, which meant residues in the above-ground part were not transferred to the garlic. Furthermore, garlic chive had higher residues than serpent garlic due to the differences in morphological characteristics. Bifenazate-diazene was easier to convert to bifenazate, with the conversion rates of 93%, 16% and 32% in garlic, serpent garlic and garlic chive extracts, respectively. Additionally, the dietary intake risk for bifenazate was acceptable with RQchronic < 100% according to the international and national assessments.
