Salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma is a very common malignant neoplasm in the salivary glands. One of the most important features of salivary cystic carcinoma is perineural invasion, which renders its complete removal is very difficult through clinical surgery. Consequently, tumor recurrence occurs easily after clinical surgery. Therefore, the molecular mechanisms of perineural invasion in salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma are necessary to explore. These mechanisms are reviewed in this paper.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a major causative agent of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC). Over the past several decades, an increasing number of studies established the strong association of HPV with the invasion and metastasis of HNSCC. In the present study, we reviewed the gene mutations in HPV-associated HNSCC and the unique mechanism of E6- and E7-mediated carcinogenesis via interactions with an array of cellular elements. We further discussed the progress in the mechanisms of invasion and metastasis; these mechanisms include non-coding RNAs, deregulating cellular energetics, tumor microenvironment, cancer stem cells, angiogenesis, and lymphangiogenesis.

Implants have been widely used in restorative treatment for patients who have undergone head and neck cancer surgery. With the development of combination treatment of head and neck cancer, radiotherapy has been a common means of therapy. However, it could induce various changes in hard and soft tissues and reduce the success and survival rate of the implants. Some research, using either animal models or clinical studies, have shown that certain strategies could be used for improving the survival rate of implants. In this review, we discussed the changes in both hard and soft tissues, which may reduce the survival rate of the implants, and the proposed methods for improving the survival rate of patients after radiotherapy.

microRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of non-coding RNAs that function as endogenous triggers of the RNA interference pathway. Studies have shown that thousands of human protein-coding genes are regulated by miRNAs, indicating that miRNAs are master regulators of many important biological processes, such as cancer development. miRNAs frequently have deregulated expression in many types of human cancers, and play critical roles in tumorigenesis, which functions either as tumor suppressors or as oncogenes. Recent studies have shown that miRNAs are highly related with cancer progression, including initiating, growth, apoptosis, invasion, and metastasis. Furthermore, miRNAs are shown to be responsible for the cancer-related inflammation, anti-cancer drug resistance, and regulation of cancer stem cells. Therefore, miRNAs have generated great interest as a novel strategy in cancer diagnosis and therapy. Here we review the versatile roles of miRNAs in cancers and their potential applications for diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment as biomarkers.

OBJECTIVE@#To explore the mRNA expression of microtubule associated protein-2 (MAP-2) after cerebral contusion, and to investigate its relationship with post-injury interval in a rat model of cerebral contusion.@*METHODS@#Based on Feeney's model of cerebral contusion, the time-dependent changes of MAP-2 mRNA were detected by real-time PCR method in different groups.@*RESULTS@#MAP-2 mRNA showed a lower expression in the brain of the control group. The expression of MAP-2 mRNA decreased 1 h post-injury, and reached the lowest level at 6 h, and the expression of MAP-2 mRNA gradually increased in the focus of the cerebral contusion from 12h to 14d after contusion, which kept a high level up to 14 d post-injury.@*CONCLUSION@#The time-dependent changes of MAP-2 mRNA expression may be a new method for estimating the wound age of cerebral contusion in forensic practice.
