ABSTRACT

Background: Systemic lupus erythematosus [SLE] is an autoimmune disease where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue. It can affect the skin, joints, kidneys, brain, and other organs


Objective: to assess knowledge toward Systemic Lupus Erythematosus [SLE] among Students of King Faisal University


Subjects and Methods: this is a cross-sectional study enrolling 161 students at King Faisal University to fill a survey on SLE awareness. The study targeted students of computer science, engineering, science and education colleges. The data was analyzed using SPSS software version 20


Results: the study reported that 98 students [60.9%] have no idea about SLE. The majority of respondent did not have clear idea regarding diagnostic, treatment and complications of disease. 55.9% respondent had idea that SLE is more prevalent among men. However, this disorder is reported more prevalent in women


Conclusion: this cross-sectional survey indicates that the students have low awareness and some misconception regarding the SLE. Therefore, the awareness programs are needed to increase the awareness about SLE, as these campaigns have proved that public awareness might be helpful to manage and control disease and associated complications

ABSTRACT

Background: despite the modern life and people knowledge about certain diseases, the prevalence of hernia repair procedures and its associated conditions have been increased in the recent years in Saudi Arabia


Objectives: prevalence of hernia repair procedures is almost known in the modern countries. This study was done to know the prevalence of hernia repair procedures in Saudi Arabia


Methods: a cross-sectional study on knowing the prevalence of hernia repair procedures in Saudi Arabia was distributed among men and women from February to January to February 2018 to 523 participants on many different social media platforms


Results: 3.8% of the participants had done hernia repair procedure. Regarding risk factors that may lead to hernia repair procedure, 29.1% of the participants had a positive family history of hernia repair procedure, 44.5% of the participants were obese, 27.6% were smoker, 25.8% ate high fat diet, 17.5% suffered from chronic constipation, 12.6% suffered from chronic cough, 8.3% had major surgeries, 7.7% were diabetic, 5.2% had been admitted to ICU, 4.6% suffered from urinary retention, 2.1% had major trauma, 1.25% had been diagnosed with atherosclerosis disease and 37.7% were having no risk factors


Conclusion: at the end of this study, we found out that hernia repair procedure is increased among people in Saudi Arabia and multiple people are suffering from many risk factors that may lead to hernia and then hernia repair procedure eventually

ABSTRACT

Background: despite the modern society and medical knowledge, irritable bowel syndrome has been common these days in medical students in Hail city


Objectives: irritable bowel syndrome [IBS] is a common gastrointestinal disease presenting with abdominal pain, bloating and change in bowel habit. This study aims to assess the prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome in medical students in Hail's university, Saudi Arabia


Methods: a cross-sectional study on the prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome was randomly distributed among men and women in Hail University in Hail city, of Saudi Arabia from January to February 2018 involving 133 medical student participants


Results: in 18% of the participants have been diagnosed with IBS and 28.5% fit Rome IV criteria for the diagnosis of IBS. Stress with a percentage of 69.2% and lack of exercise 75.9% being the highest risk factors of IBS


Conclusion: our result showed that huge number of medical students are suffering from inflammatory bowel syndrome
