ABSTRACT

Introduction: The presence of chronic pain and mood disorders can be related to the performance of intellectual and technical tasks. Objective: This study evaluated the correlation between anxiety level, chronic orofacial pain of temporomandibular disorders (TMD), and academic performance in dental students. Methods: One hundred ninety-five students (74 men and 121 women) answered the Spielberger's trait­state anxiety inventory to evaluate the level of anxiety; the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (RDC/TMD) was used to analyze chronic orofacial pain of TMD, and the academic performance was evaluated through the average grade of all college subjects concluded by the students. Correlations between the presence of chronic orofacial pain of TMD, trait, and state anxiety levels, chronic pain grade (CPG), chronic pain intensity (CPI), and academic performance were tested using Pearson's correlation test. Results: The mean age of the students was 21.8 years (SD=2.3). Chronic TMD was observed in 37.5% of the students. The majority of students had moderate trait and state anxiety. A significant correlation was observed between traitanxiety level and CPG (r=0.148, p=0.044), and CPI (r=0.187, p=0.009). No significant correlation was found between academic grade and presence of chronic pain of TMD (r=0.041, p=0.571), trait (r=0.079, p=0.273) and state-anxiety (r=0.107, p=0.136). Conclusion: The CPG and CPI increase in participants with higher trait-anxiety levels, however, no significant correlation was found between academic performance and trait/state anxiety or chronic orofacial pain of TMD.

Introdução: As disfunções temporomandibulares apresentam uma variedade de sinais e sintomas que afetam a articulação temporomandibular, músculos da mastigação e estruturas relacionadas e muitos pacientes apresentam queixas cervicais. Objetivo: Verificar a correlação de dor à palpação dos músculos da mastigação (masseter, temporal anterior, pterigoideos lateral e medial) e digástrico, com a queixa de dor no pescoço; verificar a correlação de dor à palpação nos músculos da mastigação e digástrico, com dor à palpação no esternocleidomastoideo e trapézio, e se a força de correlação é diferente entre eles. Material e método: Foram avaliados 232 prontuários da clínica odontológica das Disfunções Temporomandibulares da Faculdade de Odontologia de Araçatuba, do período de 2011 a 2013. Os dados coletados foram submetidos à análise estatística, com alfa (α) = 0.01 para todos os casos, exceto digástrico quando associado ao trapézio (α) = 0.05. Resultado: A maioria dos pacientes era do sexo feminino. Houve correlação positiva entre dor à palpação nos músculos temporal, masseter, pterigoideo lateral, esternocleidomastoideo e trapézio, e queixa de dor no pescoço. Também houve correlação positiva entre a dor em todos os músculos da mastigação (masseter, temporal, pterigoideo lateral e medial) e digástrico e a dor no esternocleidomastoideo. Bem como a correlação de presença de dor nos músculos masseter, temporal, pterigoideo lateral e digástrico com dor no trapézio. A correlação de dor foi mais forte para o músculo esternocleidomastoideo, exceto para o pterigoideo lateral. Conclusão: Existe correlação positiva entre a queixa de dor à palpação nos músculos da mastigação, exceto pterigiodeo medial, e os músculos cervicais (esternocleidomastoideo e trapézio). A força de correlação entre a dor do masseter e temporal anterior com o esternocleidomastoideo é mais forte do que com o trapézio.


Introduction: Temporomandibular disorders present a variety of signs and symptoms that affect the temporomandibular joint, masticatory muscles and related structures, and many patients have cervical complaints. Objective: To verify the correlation of pain on palpation of the mastication muscles (masseter, anterior temporal, lateral and medial pterygoid), and digastric muscles with the complaint of neck pain; to verify the correlation of pain on palpation in the masticatory and digastric muscles with pain on palpation in the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius and if the correlation strength is different between them. Material and method: From 2011 to 2013, 232 medical records from the dental clinic of Temporomandibular Disorders of the Faculty of Dentistry of Araçatuba were evaluated. The data collected were submitted to statistical analysis, with alpha (α) = 0.01 for all cases, except digastric when associated with the trapezoid (α) = 0.05. Result Most patients were female. There was a positive correlation between pain on palpation in the temporal, masseter, lateral pterygoid, sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles, and complaints of neck pain. There was also a positive correlation between pain in all muscles of mastication (masseter, temporal, lateral and medial pterygoid), and digastric and sternocleidomastoid pain. As well as the correlation of the presence of pain in the masseter, temporal, lateral pterygoid and digastric muscles with pain in the trapezius. Pain correlation was strongest for the sternocleidomastoid muscle, except for the lateral pterygoid. Conclusion There is a positive correlation between the complaint of pain on palpation in the masticatory muscles, except Medial pterygoid, with the cervical muscles (sternocleidomastoid and trapezius). The strength of correlation between masseter and anterior temporal pain with the sternocleidomastoid is stronger than with the trapezius.

ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the dimensional stability and maintenance of details of conventional and high stability alginates up to 5-day storage. Methods: Two types of alginates were selected (n=10) for this study, conventional (Hydrogum) and high stability alginates (Hydrogum 5), which were produced with the aid of a cylindrical metal block and a ring-shaped metal mold (Specifications 18, 19, and 25, ANSI/ADA). Ten images were obtained from the molds for the dimensional stability test, which were taken immediately after their production and at each different storage periods (15 min, 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, 96 h, and 120 h) by a digital camera. The specimens were kept hermetically sealed in plastic bags (23°C) and then used to obtain 140 (n=70) dental stone models, used in the detail reproduction test, in which the angular accuracy of three grooves (20 µm, 50 µm, and 75 µm) was observed at each period. The details reproduction accuracy was classified using a predetermined score classification. Measurements of dimensional changes were made in the Corel DRAW X6 program. The data were submitted to the Student's t-test (α?#8197;= 0.05). Results: A statistically significant difference concerning the size of the matrix was observed after 24h for both alginates, and a statistically significant negative linear dimensional change (contraction) was verified after 24 h of storage (1.52% for the high stability alginate, and 1.32% for the conventional alginate). The high stability alginate kept the full details for 72 hours, while the conventional alginate, for 24 h. Both alginates reproduced the 75 µm groove at all storage periods. Conclusion: Impressions made with both alginates presented satisfactory clinical results when the alginates were immediately poured.


RESUMO Objetivo: O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a estabilidade dimensional e manutenção de detalhes de alginatos convencionais e de alta estabilidade por até 5 dias de armazenamento. Métodos: Para esse estudo, foram selecionados dois tipos de alginatos: convencional (Hydrogum) (n = 10) e de alta estabilidade (Hydrogum 5) (n = 10), sendo produzidos com o auxílio de um bloco metálico cilíndrico e um molde metálico em forma de anel (especificações 18, 19 e 25, ANSI/ADA). Para o teste de estabilidade dimensional, dez imagens foram obtidas imediatamente e para cada tempo de armazenamento (15 min, 24, 48, 72, 96 e 120 horas), realizadas por câmera digital. As amostras foram mantidas hermeticamente fechadas em sacos plásticos (23°C). Para o teste de reprodução de detalhes, as amostras foram utilizadas para obter 140 (n = 70 por grupo) modelos de gesso, sendo observada a precisão angular de três sulcos (20 µm, 50 µm e 75 µm) para cada período. A precisão da reprodução de detalhes foi classificada usando uma classificação de pontuação predeterminada. As medições das mudanças dimensionais foram feitas no programa Corel DRAW X6. Os dados foram submetidos ao teste t de Student (α = 0,05). Resultados: Foi observada diferença estatística em relação à matriz após 24h para ambos os alginatos. Uma mudança dimensional linear negativa estatisticamente significativa (contração) foi verificada após 24 h de armazenamento (1,52% para alginato de alta estabilidade; 1,32% para alginato convencional). O alginato de alta estabilidade manteve os detalhes completos por até 72 horas, enquanto o alginato convencional, por 24 horas. Os alginatos reproduziram o sulco de 75 µm para todos os períodos. Conclusão: As impressões feitas com ambos os alginatos devem ser imediatamente vazadas para se ter resultados clínicos satisfatórios.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to systematically evaluate the effects of traumatic occlusion on the periodontal tissue of rats. The set of questions to be answered were–Can traumatic occlusion acting on a healthy and an unhealthy periodontium cause periodontal destruction? Design: The protocols for systematic review were all developed, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses statement and applied to animal research. Reporting of In vivo experiment guidelines for reporting animal research to assess the risk of bias of the studies. Materials and Methods: A literature search was conducted using MEDLINE through PubMed and manual search from the reference lists of main articles related to the theme. Results: This search strategy identified 65 references, of which 33 were considered inappropriate. The full texts of 32 articles were read, 31 of which did not meet the eligibility criteria and were excluded. The final selection included 1 article for which data was extracted for further evaluation. The article included shows a strongest reaction in the periodontium in front of a secondary occlusal trauma as inflammation and apical migration of the junctional epithelium, bone degradation, and decrease in the quantity of collagen fiber. However, primary occlusal trauma also presents these alterations, with the exception of apical migration of the junctional epithelium. Conclusions: Although only one study was included in the systematic review of traumatic occlusion, there is some evidence from experimental studies on animals that shows a coherent picture of the effects of traumatic occlusion on the periodontium. However, new studies are needed to fully answer the questions posed by this systematic review.

Abstract Objectives This study evaluated the evolution of cases of concussion and subluxation through a retrospective study of 20 years. Material and Methods Were examined clinical and radiographic records of 1,309 patients who underwent treatment of dentoalveolar trauma in the discipline of Integrated Clinic of the School of Dentistry of Araçatuba, UNESP, of which we selected 137 whose patients had concussion and subluxation injuries, with average age of 23.3 (SD - 10.96). The variables collected were: gender, age, history of previous and actual trauma, treatments performed, the presence of necrotic pulp, and time elapsed until the same trauma. The concussion and subluxation groups were subjected to statistical analyses using the SPSS 16.0 version software (α=0.05), Chi-square, and t-tests. Results Of the 301 teeth involved, 49 (16.3%) suffered concussion and 252 (83.7%), subluxation, being the upper anterior teeth the most affected (75.1%) for both conditions. Subluxation and concussion traumas were more prevalent in men aged 10 to 20 years, most caused by cycling accidents (36.2%). There was a concomitant presence of crown fracture in 21% of cases of concussion and 34.7% of subluxation. Pulp necrosis was detected in 16.3% (concussion) and 27.1% (subluxation) (p=0.12), and most occurred within 6 months after the trauma (p=0.29). The pulp necrosis shows a positive correlation with motorcycle accidents (p=0.01), direct impact (p≤0.0001), crown fracture with pulp exposure (p≤0.0001), darkening of the crown (p=0.004) and spontaneous pain (p≤0.0001); and negative correlation with indirect impact (p≤0.0001). Conclusions Although concussion and subluxation traumas are considered of minor degrees, they must be monitored, since the possibility of pulp necrosis exists, and its early treatment favors a good prognosis.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The aim of this study is to evaluate the action of paramonochlorophenol associated with Furacin followed by calcium hydroxide (CH) dressing in the control of inflammatory root resorption in cases of immediate tooth replantation with delayed endodontic treatment. A total of 28 incisors of 3 male dogs were extracted and replanted after 15 minutes, and randomly divided into 3 groups: Group I (n = 8) - endodontic treatment was performed before the extraction and replantation; Group II (n = 10) - endodontic treatment was performed 30 days after replantation and the root canal was filled with CH dressing; Group III (n = 10) - endodontic treatment was performed 30 days after replantation and root canals received temporary medication of paramonochlorophenol-Furacin followed by CH dressing. The animals were euthanized 90 days after replantation. The histomorphological events analyzed at the epithelial reattachment site were the intensity and extent of acute and chronic inflammatory processes, periodontal ligament (PDL) organization, the intensity and extent of acute and chronic inflammatory processes in the PDL space, root resorption, bone tissue, and ankylosis. Data were submitted to the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test for group comparison (α = 5%). In Groups I, II and III the periodontal ligament was regenerated and most of the resorption areas were repaired by newly formed cementum. The depth and extent of root resorption were significantly higher in Group II than in Group III. The use of paramonochlorophenol-furacin followed by CH dressing was more effective in controlling inflammatory root resorption after immediate tooth replantation.

ABSTRACT

Avulsão dentária é o tipo mais grave de traumatismo dentoalveolar, e o tratamento de escolha para esse tipo de lesão deve ser o reimplante do dente avulsionado. Após realizar uma revisão da literatura e promover discussões com pesquisadores experientes e especialistas clínicos de diferentes áreas, a Associação Internacional de Traumatologia Dentária (IADT) propôs um protocolo para o reimplante dentário com a recomendação de se usar a antibioticoterapia sistêmica (SAT) para reduzir o risco de ocorrência de reabsorção radicular. Diversos antibióticos foram testados, mas a tetraciclina e amoxicilina são, de longe, as drogas mais comumente usadas para lesões por avulsão. Este trabalho revisa a literatura sobre a prescrição de SAT em casos de reimplante imediato e tardio de dentes permanentes acidentalmente avulsionados, com base em uma análise crítica de artigos completos recuperados nos bancos de dados eletrônicos PubMed/Medline, Bireme e SciELO. Trabalhos de pesquisa original e revisões de literatura publicados em língua inglesa entre 1966 e 2016 e que contivessem alguma discussão sobre a relação entre antibioticoterapia e reimplante de dentes permanentes foram buscados por meio da utilização das palavras chave "avulsão dentária", "antibioticoterapia sistêmica" e "reimplante dentário". Observou-se que a prescrição de antibióticos para dentes reimplantados é um assunto controverso e que estudos clínicos randomizados são necessários para se estabelecer a real necessidade de se usarem antibióticos para o reimplante dentário. Até que os resultados desses estudos se tornem disponíveis, a recomendação é de se usar a SAT para o tratamento de dentes permanentes reimplantados após uma avulsão acidental. A melhor opção de prescrição é a tetraciclina durante 7 dias e a segunda melhor opção é a amoxicilina durante 4 a 7 dias


Dental avulsion is the most severe type of dentoalveolar trauma, and the treatment of choice for this type of injury should be the replantation of the exarticulated tooth. After conducting a review of the literature and holding discussions with experienced researchers and clinical specialists from different areas, the International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT) proposed a protocol for tooth replantation, including a recommendation for systemic antibiotic therapy (SAT) to reduce the risk of root resorption. Several antibiotics have been tested, but tetracycline and amoxicillin are, by far, the most commonly used drugs for avulsion injuries. This paper reviews the literature on the prescription of SAT in cases of immediate and delayed replantation of accidentally avulsed permanent teeth, based on a critical analysis of full-length papers retrieved from the PubMed/Medline, Bireme and SciELO electronic databases. Original research reports and literature reviews published in English-language journals between 1966 and 2016, and directly or indirectly discussing the relation between antibiotic therapy and the replantation of permanent teeth, were searched using "tooth avulsion," "systemic antibiotic therapy" and "tooth replantation" as key words. The prescription of antibiotics for tooth replantation was found to be a controversial subject, and randomized clinical studies are needed to determine whether antibiotics for tooth replantation are actual indicated. Until the results of these studies become available, the recommendation is to use SAT for the management of permanent teeth replanted after an accidental avulsion. The best prescription option is tetracycline for 7 days, and the second best prescription option is amoxicillin for 4 to 7 days.

Context: A better understanding of the relation between traumatic dental occlusion and periodontal changes is needed. Aims: This study aimed to evaluate the pattern of osteoclastic activity in the periodontal bone in front of the traumatic dental occlusion in rat molars. Patients and Methods: Traumatic dental occlusion (TO) was induced in twenty rats, which were sacrificed after periods of 2, 5, 7, and 14 days. Transversal histological sections of both jaws were stained with tartrate‑resistant acid phosphatase and hematoxylin and eosin. Mann– Whitney U‑test was used for group comparison, and Pearson’s correlation test was applied for the number of osteoclasts and bone area (BA). Results: Traumatic dental occlusion caused an increase in the number of osteoclasts in the bone of the upper and lower right first molar from days 2–5 to 2–14, respectively. In the TO groups, the number of osteoclasts on the lamina dura and in the center of the alveolar bone septum, respectively, increased almost 4‑fold and 9‑fold in the lower jaw; and 3‑fold and 5‑fold in the upper jaw, during all periods. In the TO groups, the BA of the alveolar bone septum was substantially reduced. There was a negative correlation between the number of osteoclasts and BA in both jaws during all experimental periods. Conclusions: Traumatic dental occlusion increases osteoclast activity in the alveolar lamina dura and in the center of alveolar bone and stimulates a higher degradation in the center of the alveolar bone septum.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to gather information and discuss the predictability of implant-supported prostheses in patients with bruxism by performing a literature review. METHODS: In order to select the studies included in this review, a detailed search was performed in PubMed and Medline databases, using the following key words: bruxism, dental implants, implant supported prosthesis, and dental restoration failure. Items that were included are: case reports, randomized controlled trials, in vitro studies, literature and systematic reviews, with or without meta-analysis, of the last 20 years that addressed the theme. Articles without abstracts, animal studies, articles in languages other than English and articles from journals unrelated to the dental field were excluded. RESULTS: after analysis according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, 28 articles were selected from a total of 54. It is known from the array of scientific articles which have assessed, either through retrospective, prospective or experimental studies, that the biomechanical and biological impact of bruxism on implant-supported prostheses is small, and that the literature has contributed little to exemplify the prosthetic limits of safety for the specialist from a clinical point of view. CONCLUSION: Although there is still no general consensus on this matter, most of the literature review articles do provide clinical guidelines that contribute to implant supported prostheses longevity and stability in patients with bruxism. .


OBJETIVO: Realizar uma revisão sistemática, a fim de reunir informações e discutir a previsibilidade de próteses sobre implantes em pacientes com bruxismo. MÉTODOS: Para a identificação dos estudos dessa revisão, foi realizada uma estratégia de busca detalhada e avançada nos bancos de dados PubMed e Medline. Foram utilizados como descritores: bruxismo, implantes dentários, prótese implantossuportada e falha da restauração dentárial; bruxism, dental implants, implant-supported prosthesis e dental restoration failure. Os critérios de inclusão foram: artigos clínicos, estudos controlados aleatórios, estudos in vitro, revisões de literatura e revisões sistemáticas com e sem meta-análise dos últimos 20 anos que abordassem o tema proposto. Os critérios de exclusão foram: artigos sem resumo, estudos em animais, artigos cujo idioma não fosse o inglês e artigos de periódicos que não pertencessem à área odontológica. RESULTADOS: De um total de 54 artigos, após uma análise segundo o critério de inclusão e exclusão, foram selecionados 28 artigos. É sabido que a quantidade de artigos científicos que avaliaram, seja através de estudos retrospectivos, prospectivos ou experimentais, o impacto biológico e biomecânico do bruxismo em próteses sobre implantes é pequena e pouco tem contribuído para melhor exemplificação e discernimento dos limites protéticos de segurança para o especialista sob um ponto de vista clínico. CONCLUSÃO: Portanto, ainda não há um consenso geral acerca desse assunto, porém, a maioria dos artigos de revisão de literatura fornecem guias de orientação clínica, os quais auxiliam na longevidade e estabilidade de próteses sobre implantes em pacientes com bruxismo. .

Objetivo: Analisar as razões para as substituições de restaurações de amálgama e resina composta dentre os pacientes atendidos na disciplina de Clínica Integrada, da Faculdade de Odontologia de Araçatuba (UNESP). Método: Após a realização do exame dos pacientes para a coleta dos dados destinada à formulação do diagnóstico, o plano de tratamento foi delineado utilizando ficha constando as restaurações a serem substituídas, as razões para essa substituição, o material restaurador utilizado e o número de faces restauradas. A seguir, todas as indicações de substituições foram conferidas e checadas quanto à sua verdadeira necessidade por 5 examinadores calibrados quanto aos conceitos teóricos sobre os critérios propostos da necessidade ou não de substituição. O período de análise foi de 5 anos (2001 a 2005). Para padronizar a análise das restaurações, foi anexada à ficha, critérios para as substituições. Resultados: Foram atendidos 856 pacientes, dos quais 753 necessitaram substituir restaurações. As principais razões que levaram a substituição de restaurações de amálgama foram: adaptação marginal deficiente (40,9%), recidiva de cárie (24,1%) e forma anatômica deficiente (15,4%). Para as restaurações de resina composta foram: razões estéticas (31,4%), adaptação marginal deficiente (29,2%) e recidiva de cárie (20,7%). Conclusão: A despeito da pouca experiência clínica da população estudada (alunos de graduação), as razões para substituição das restaurações não divergem da literatura sendo o fator estético o principal motivo para as restaurações de resina composta e a adaptação marginal deficiente para as de amálgama.


Objective: To analyze the reasons for replacing amalgam and composite resin restorations of patients treated at the Integrated Clinic Discipline of the Dental School of Araçatuba (UNESP), SP, Brazil. Method: After examining the patients for data collection to obtain a diagnosis, the treatment plan was outlined using a clinical form containing the restorations to be replaced, the reasons for replacing, the restorative material of choice and the number of restored surfaces. Next, all restorations indicated for replacement were examined as to their real need of replacement by 5 calibrated examiners taking into account the theorical concepts on the proposed criteria for the need of replacing or not. The analyzed period comprised 5 years (2001 to 2005). The criteria adopted for replacement were attached to the data collecting form in order to standardize the analysis of the restorations. Results: 856 patients were treated within the studied period and 753 needed restoration replacement. The main reasons for replacing amalgam restorations were defective marginal adaptation (40.9%), recurent caries (24.1%) and deficient anatomical form (15.4%). The main reasons for replacing resin restorations were esthetics (31.4%), defective marginal adaptation (29.2%) and recurent caries (20.7%). Conclusion: In spite of the little clinical experience of the studied population (undergraduate students), the reasons for replacing restorations were in accordance with the literature, having estehtics as the main reason for the replacement of composite resin restorations and defective marginal adaptation for amalgam restorations.

ABSTRACT

Objetivo: Estabelecer a caracterização social dos pacientesatendidos na clínica de graduação da Disciplina de Clínica Integradada Faculdade de Odontologia de Araçatuba (UNESP).Método: Amostra por conveniência compreendendo 289 indivíduos.Os dados foram obtidos pela técnica direta intensiva, tendo porinstrumento um formulário. A classificação social foi determinadaconsiderando os seguintes itens: salário, moradia própria, bens deconsumo e escolaridade, que permitiram enquadra os indivíduosnas classes sociais baixa inferior, baixa média, baixa superior,média inferior, média média, média superior, alta inferior, alta médiae alta superior.Resultados: Verificou-se que 52,9 por cento estão empregados, 49,1 por centosão responsáveis pela manutenção financeira da família, tem faixasalarial familiar entre 2 e 4 salários mínimos (SM) em 44,3 por cento e faixasalarial individual abaixo de 2SM em 41,2 por cento. Além disso, observouseque 3,5por cento são analfabetos, 32,9 por cento possuem habitação própriaregular e 51,2 por cento pertencem à classe baixa superior. A relação entreos fatores econômicos, sociais, culturais e educacionais determinaum padrão de comportamento gerador ou não de saúde, este fatopede mudança no comportamento tanto dos usuários quanto dosprofissionais da saúde no que compete principalmente à açãoeducacional.Conclusão: A maioria dos pacientes atendidos pela disciplina deClínica Integrada é da classe baixa superior, sendo esse dado umimportante indicador de planejamento das ações a seremdesenvolvidas na clínica, favorecendo um atendimento de qualidadee com compromisso social.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this retrospective study was to analyze the cases of traumatic dental injuries involving root fracture and/or periodontal ligament injury (except avulsion) treated at the Discipline of Integrated Clinic, School of Dentistry of Araçatuba, São Paulo State University (UNESP), Brazil, from January 1992 to December 2002. Clinical and radiographic records from 161 patients with 287 traumatized teeth that had sustained root fracture and/or injuries to the periodontal ligament were examined. The results of this survey revealed that subluxation (25.09 percent) was the most common type of periodontal ligament injury, followed by extrusive luxation (19.86 percent). There was a predominance of young male patients and most of them did not present systemic alterations. Among the etiologic factors, the most frequent causes were falls and bicycle accidents. Injuries on extraoral soft tissues were mostly laceration and abrasion, while gingival and lip mucosa lacerations prevailed on intraoral soft tissues injuries. Radiographically, the most common finding was an increase of the periodontal ligament space. The most commonly performed treatment was root canal therapy. Within the limits of this study, it can be concluded that traumatic dental injuries occur more frequently in young male individuals, due to falls and bicycle accidents. Subluxation was the most common type of periodontal ligament injury. Root canal therapy was the type of treatment most commonly planned and performed.

ABSTRACT

O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar os efeitos da fumaça de cigarros sobre o desenvolvimento da cartilagem mandibular (cartilagem de Meckel) do embrião de rato. Quando inalado por ratas Wistar, entre o 9º e o 12º dia de prenhez, a fumaça de cigarros (5/dia) provocou retardo do crescimento intrauterino, com fetos e placentas menores. Nos fetos do grupo experimental, o exame histopatológico revelou uma cartilagem de Meckel pouco desenvolvida, com condroblastos menores apresentando citoplasma escaso com núcleos mais pálidos, esféricos e centrais, assim como uma matrix cartilaginosa mais abundante. A análise morfométrica revelou que as lacunas da cartilagem de Meckel eram menores nos fetos do grupo experimental, não apresentando alteração significativa de sua forma. Os resultados sugeriram que a fumaça de cigarros inalada pelas ratas prenhes durante o período de organogênese induziu retardo tanto do crescimento quanto da diferenciação celular na cartilagem de Meckel dos fetos.
