ABSTRACT

Purpose@#Evidence on factors influencing the variations of music’s effect on anxiety and pain in surgical patients is unclear. We aimed to elucidate the effects of music intervention on anxiety and pain throughstudy characteristics. @*Methods@#We conducted a search on the PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, Cochrane, and Web of Science databases from March 7 to April 21, 2022, for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for the effect of music intervention on anxiety, pain, and physiological responses in surgical patients. We included studies published within the last 10 years. We assessed the risk of bias in the study using the Cochrane risk of bias tool for randomized trials and performed meta-analyses using a random-effects model for all outcomes. We used change-from-baseline scores as summary statistics and computed bias-corrected standardized mean differences (Hedges'g) for anxiety and pain outcomes and mean differences (MD) for blood pressure and heart rate. @*Results@#Of the 454 records retrieved, 30 RCTs involving 2280 participants were found to be eligible. Music intervention was found to be superior to standard care in reducing anxiety (Hedges' g = −1.48, 95% confidence interval: −1.97 to −0.98), pain (Hedges's g = −0.67, −1.11 to −0.23), systolic blood pressure (MD = −4.62, −7.38 to −1.86), and heart rate (MD = −3.37, −6.65 to −0.10) in surgical patients. The impact of music on anxiety and pain relief varied significantly depending on the duration of the intervention. The largest effect was observed in interventions lasting between 30 and 60 minutes, with a decrease in anxiety and pain. @*Conclusions@#Music intervention is an effective way to reduce anxiety, pain, and physiological responses in surgical patients. Future reviews examining the influence of different types of surgery on the effects of music would add to the body of knowledge in this field. This study has been registered on the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) under the number CRD42022340203, with a registration date of July 4, 2022.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a structural model including relevant factors to identity the variables that affect school adjustment in juvenile delinquents. On the basis of a review of the literature on school adjustment of juvenile delinquents and on Bronfenbrenner's bio-ecological model, a hypothetical model was developed by setting home environmental factors (e.g.,economic conditions, parent child communication, parenting attitudes, peer relationships, and academic stress) as exogenous variables, and personal factors (e.g., ego identity and psychological well-being) as endogenous variables. METHODS: Data were collected from January 29 to March 3, 2015 by a survey of 206 students attending junior high and high schools in City B. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS and Amos 22.0 software. RESULTS: The verification of the hypothetical model indicated a good fit for the model: χ²=0.009 df=13, χ²/df=2.161, GFI=0.97, AGFI=0.90, RMESA=0.07, CFI=0.98, TLI=0.95, and RMR=0.01. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that ego identity and parent-child communication do not directly affect school adjustment of juvenile delinquents but influence it depending on the psychological well-being of delinquents. High levels of psychological well-being, better economic conditions, better parent-child communication, and low academic stress were abserved to contribute to better school life. Therefore, to improve the school adjustment of juvenile delinquents, appropriate measures need to be taken and programs need to be designed for improving ego identity and parent-child communication, thus promoting psychological well-being.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The aimof this phenomenological study was to qualitatively classify the experience of spouses caring for patients with schizophrenia. METHODS: Data were gathered using 2 hour in-depth, unstructured interviews with nine spouses of patients with schizophrenia. The data collection period was 2012 to 2013. Colaizzi's phenomenological method was used to analyze the resulting data. RESULTS: Five clusters of themes were identified. These were termed according to the experiences described by the spouses, as: suffering fromfalling into the abyss of despair; deepening heartbreak, clouds of misery hanging over one's family; possibly of losing the bond between familymembers; getting over one's hurt and stepping forward to the future. Participants experienced many burdens while caring for their spouse, however, they showed the ability to overcome difficulties positively and actively. CONCLUSION: The results of this study indicate that the spouse of a patient with schizophrenia experiences multiple sources of distress, and suggests a process to overcoming them. Recommendations include helping nurses be aware of the sufferings of both the patient and the spouse and to plan and provide for psychological interventions, such as stressmanagement programs and informational support on social welfare programs.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this predictive study was to identify factors affecting health related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS: The participants in this study were 131 patients with RA who were recruited from the outpatient clinic of a university hospital in Seoul. Disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis was evaluated by calculating the Disease Activity Score 28. Disability in activities of daily living (ADL) was assessed with the Korean Health Assessment Questionnaire, and depression with The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. HRQoL was evaluated using The Short Form 36 Health Survey. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation, and hierarchical multiple regression. RESULTS: Pain, disability in ADL, disease activity, and depression correlated negatively with physical and mental dimensions of HRQoL. But hierachical multiple regression analysis revealed that disability in ADL and depression were the only variables negatively influencing physical and mental QoL after adjustment for influences of sociodemographic variables. CONCLUSION: Results of this study suggest that disability in ADL and depression, rather than disease activity and pain have profound effects on HRQoL in patients with RA. Further studies are needed to assess the predictive ability of disease activity and pain on HRQoL in this population.

ABSTRACT

Objectives To explore the relationship between polymorphism in estrogen receptor alpha (ERα)gene Xba I and child dental fluorosis.Methods Qiulou township of Kaifeng and Sunying township of Tongxu counties of Henan province were chosen as the investigation spots in 2006.An area of water drinking endemic fluorosis(high fluoride area)and a non-endemic area(control area)were chosen in every spot,where dental fluorosis of children aged 8 to 12 years old were examined and diagnosed by using the Dean method.The children in the high fluoride areas were divided into dental fluorosis group and control group of the endemic areas according to dental fluorosis status,and the children in the control areas as control gruop of non-endemic areas.The Xba I polymorphism in the ERα gene was genotyped using the PCR-RFLP procedure.The fluoride levels in the urine samples from the three groups were detected by fluoride ion selective electrode and over standard rate of the urine was counted.Results The prevalence rate of dental fluorosis in high fluoride areas was 51.7%(74/143)and the community fluorosis index was 1.310.No dental fluorosis case was checked out in the control and the community fluorosis index was 0.021.The over standard rate of urine fluoride in dental fluorosis group[84.6%(121/143)]was significantly higher than that of control in non-endemic area[9.6%(9/94);χ2=125.95,P<0.01].The frequency distribution of ERα Xba I genotype was XX 6.8%(5/74),xx 36.5%(27/74),xx 56.8%(42/74)in dental fluorosis group;XX 15.9%(11/69),Xx 37.7%(26/69),xx 46.4%(32/69)in the eontrol of the endemic areas;XX 14.9%(14/94),Xx 43.6%(41/94),xx 41.5%(39/94)in children from the control in non-endemic area,respectively.No significant difference was found among the three groups(χ2= 3.450, P > 0.05). Allele frequency of ERα Xba I genotypes was X 22.7%(30/132), x 77.3%(102/132) in dental fluorosis group and X 35.5%(39/110),x 64.5% (71/110) in the control in endemic area when urine fluorosis of children was exceeding standard and significant difference was found in this two groups(χ2 = 4.768, P < 0.05; OR = 0.535,95% CI:0.305 - 0.941). Conclusion Children who carried X allele frequency of ERα Xba I genotypes have a lower risk of dental fluorosis when children with high-loaded fluoride status.

ABSTRACT

ObjectiveTo investigate the protective effect of testosterone on motor neuron after sciatic nerve injury. MethodsTwelve adult C57 male mice were randomly divided into two groups: the sesame oil control group (n= 6) and the testosterone experimental group (n= 6). Unilateral sciatic nerve cutting severed as the animal model. Following operation, sesame oil or testosterone was administered for the control and experimental animals respectively via subcutaneous injection every other day for two weeks. The number and soma area of the anterior horn motor neurons in the lumbosacral cord of the sciatic nerve injury side were then measured on Nissl stained sections. Results In the testosterone group the motor neurons appeared healthier than that in the sesame control group. The neurons were plumper and showed more processes. Their number and average soma size were significantly larger than that in the sesame control (P<0.01). Conclusion The findings demonstrate that testosterone has a significant protective effect on sciatic nerve motor neurons after nerve injury.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of uterine weight on short-term outcome of total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH) for benign gynecological conditions. METHODS: A retrospective medical records review of 265 cases of patients with TLH was performed. Patients included in this study underwent TLH as benign uterine disorders at Kangnam Sacred Heart Hostpital, Hallym University from January 2008 through June 2009. These patients were stratified into three groups; Group 1 patients with uterus weighing less than 180 g (n=60), Group2 patients with uterus weighing 180 g to 350 g (n=141), Group 3 patients with uterus weighing more than 350 g (n=64). The groups were compared as regard postoperative stay, operative time, estimated blood loss, hemoglobin change, conversion to open surgery, and postoperative complications. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in age, gravidity, body mass index, previous pelvic surgery and past medical history. The overall complication rates were not significantly different. But operative time prolonged as uterine weight increased. CONCLUSION: The TLH can be performed successfully in case of enlarged uterus. Therefore the enlarged uterus is not an absolute contraindication for TLH.

ABSTRACT

Objectives To investigate the relationship between fluorosis polymorphisms in collagen type Ⅰ alpha 2 (COL1A2) and osteocalcin (OC) gene, and serum calciotropic hormone levels. Methods The children between 8 and 12 years of age in Kaifeng and Tongxu cities of Henan Province were chosen to be the object of observation. Accoding to situation of dental fluorosis, they were divided into three groups: dental fluorosis group, non-dental fluorosis group from high fluoride areas, and control group form the control areas. The Pvu Ⅱ and Rsa Ⅰ markers of COL1A2 gene as well as HindⅢ marker of OC gene were genotyped by PCR-RFLP procedure. Calcitonin and osteocalcin levels in serum were measured using radioimmunassays. Results The frequency distribution of COL1A2 PvuⅡ genotype was pp 49.3%(37/75), Pp 32.0%(24/75), PP 18.7%(14/75) in children with fluorosis; pp 43.5% (30/69), Pp 52.2% (36/69), PP 4.3%(3/69) in children without fluorosis from high fluoride areas; and pp 43.8% (42/96), Pp 40.6% (39/96), PP 15.6% (15/96) in the children without fluorosis from control areas respectively. Childrens with the homozygous genotype PP of COL1A2 Pvu Ⅱ had a significantly increased risk of dental fluorosis(OR=4.85, 95%CI: 1.22-19.32) compared to children with the homozygous genotype pp in anendemic fluorosis area. The frequency distribution of COLIA2 Rsa Ⅰ genotype was rr 50.7% (38/75), Rr 36.0% (27/75), RR 13.3%(10/75) in children with fluorosis; rr 46.4%(32/69), Rr 46.4%(32/69), RR 7.2%(5/69) in children without fluorosis from high fluoride areas, and rr 45.8% (44/96), Rr 45.8% (44/96), RR 8.3% (8/96) in the children without fluorosis from control areas respectively. There were no significant differences in the three groups (P>0.05). The frequency distribution of OC Hind Ⅲ genotype was hh 48.0% (36/75), Hh 34.7% (26/75), HH 17.3% (13/75) in children with fluorosis; hh 43.5% (30/69), Hh 43.5% (30/69), HH 13.0% (9/69) in children without fluorosis from high fluoride areas, and hh 47.9%(46/96), Hh 40.6%(39/96), HH 11.5%(11/96) in children without fluorosis from control areas respectively. There were no significant differences in the three groups (P>0.05). Additionally, fluoride levels in urine and OC levels inserum were found to be significantly lower in controls from non-endemic areas compared to cases(P<0.05). However, the differences in urine fluoride and serum OC levels were not observed when cases were compared to controls from high fluoride areas(P>0.05). Conehlsions This study provides the evidence of an association between polymorphisms in the COL1A2 gene with dental fluorosis in populations exposed to high fluoride. There were no correlation between OC Hind Ⅲ genotype and the dental fluorosis.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the water quality and running status of the dringking water improving project in Xuchang,Pingdingshan and Nanyang,thus to provide basis for scientifically evaluating social effects.Methods Stratified sampling was used in the levels of counties and townships and villages,with the number of checked counties greater than or eaquel to half of the projected counties(13/24),the checked townships more than 40 percent of the projected townships(42/102),the checked villages greater than or eaquel to 30% of the projected villages(56/186).We listened their statement,reviewed the documents,examined carefully the water projects before we made the appraisal.Results More than 95%(129/136)of the projects had water quality reports,among which 90%(122/136)were provided by county level centers for disease prevention and control,75% (102/136) of water samples were collected by centers for disease prevention and control,80%(109/136)ofcounties organized an acceptance check-up group,92%(125/136)projects well preserved water source.Conclusions The dringking water improvement projeets in countryside are basically normal in terms of construction and management,the water supplied is qualified,so the expected goal is achieved.However,duties of each department are not explicit and the communication is inadequate,so collaboration should be reinforced.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>BACKGROUND</b>The incidence of spinal injury with spinal cord contusion is high in developed countries and is now growing in China. Furthermore, spinal cord injury happens mostly in young people who have a long life expectance. A large number of patients thus are wheelchair bound for the rest of their lives. Therefore, spinal cord injury has aroused great concern worldwide. Despite great efforts, recovery from spinal cord injury remains unsatisfactory. Based on the pathology of spinal cord contusion, an idea of early neurosurgical intervention has been formulated in this study.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>A total of 30 patients with "complete" spinal cord injury or classified as American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA)-A were studied. Orthopedic treatment of the injured vertebra (e), internal fixation of the vertebral column, and bilateral laminectomy for epidural decompression were followed directly by neurosurgical management, including separation of the arachnoid adhesion to restore cerebrospinal fluid flow and debridement of the spinal cord necrotic tissue with concomitant intramedullary decompression. Rehabilitation started 17 days after the operation. The final outcome was evaluated after 3 months of rehabilitation. Pearson chi-square analysis was used for statistical analysis.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>All the patients recovered some ability to walk. The least recovered patients were able to walk with a wheeled weight support and help in stabilizing the weight bearing knee joint (12 cases, 40%). Thirteen patients (43%) were able to walk with a pair of crutches, a stick or without any support. The timing of the operation after injury was important. An optimal operation time window was identified at 4 - 14 days after injury.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>Early neurosurgical intervention of spinal cord contusion followed by rehabilitation can significantly improve the locomotion of the patients. It is a new idea of a therapeutic approach for spinal cord contusion and has been proven to be very successful.</p>

ABSTRACT

Three myelin proteins, Nogo-A, MAG and OMgp, transduce their neurite-outgrowth inhibitory signal through a common receptor complex: NgR/ p75NTR (or TROY). Recently, LINGO-1 is identified as another essential component and regulator for the Nogo-66 receptor/p75 signaling complex. LINGO-1 is restricted to express in CNS, neuronal LINGO-1 is shown to be involved in the signal transduction from three myelin proteins, and Lingo-1 in oligodendrocyte negatively regulates the differentiation and myelination of oligodendrocyte. To investigate the potential activity of LINGO-1 in neuronal apoptosis, LINGO-1-Fc fusion protein including the extracellular LRR and IgC2 domain, was used as functional antagonist to study its protective effect on low-potassium induced apoptosis of cerebellar granule neurons (CGNs). In judgement of the apoptotic nuclei stained by Hoechst, LINGO-1-Fc pretreatment for 2 h significantly prevents apoptosis of CGNs. Although GST-LINGO-1 protein, including the LRR domain, binds to the CGN cultures in the same way with LINGO-1-Fc, it doesn't prevent the apoptosis of CGNs. These results indicate that LINGO-1-Fc fusion protein prevents low-potassium induced apoptosis of cerebellar granule neurons in certain conditions and this activity is probably IgC2 domain dependent.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To observe the effect of electroacupuncture at Zusanli (ST 36) on phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (pERK1/2) in the dorsal horn of spinal cord induced by plantar inflammation in the rat.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>All the rats were randomly divided into 5 groups: normal control group, simple electroacupuncture group, formalin group, formalin plus ipsilateral electroacupuncture group and formalin plus contralateral electroacupuncture group. The acute inflammation animal model was made by injection of 100 microL of 4% formalin into the right posterior foot pad. Electroacupuncture was given at "Zusanli" (ST 36) for 30 min, with sparse-dense waves, frequency 2-15 Hz, and intensity 2-3 mA. One and a half hours latter, the rats were killed under anesthesia, and pERK1/2 expression in the lumbar dorsal horn were investigated with immunohistochemical method.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The positive cells were rarely seen (6.45 +/- 1.05) in the superficial spinal cord in the control group; a few cells (14.07 +/- 3.19) in ipsilateral superficial spinal cord were found in the electroacupuncture group. The number of pERK1/2-positive neurons (26.57 +/- 4.93) in lamina I - II0 of the ipsilateral dorsal horn in the formalin group increased significantly. After electroacupuncture at ipsilateral Zusanli (ST 36), the number of positive cells (20.79 +/- 5.21) had a tendency to decrease, but with no statistically significant difference. However, after electroacupuncture at contralateral Zusanli (ST 36), the number of positive cells (14.75 +/- 3.03) significantly decreased as compared with the non-acupuncture group (P < 0.05).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>The inhibition of ERK1/2 phosphorylation in the spinal cord dorsal horn by electroacupuncture is possibly involved in acupuncture analgesic effect.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>In order to characterize the feature of stress response induced by stressor with both physical and psychological natures, the effects of water restriction performed in different experimental modes on the physiological parameters, psychological behavioral manifestations and brain c-Fos expressions were observed and compared.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Fifty-eight male Wistar rats were used and randomly divided into three experimental groups (n = 18 for each) and a control group (n = 4). In control group, the rats were allowed to access drinking water freely at all experimental period. In the experimental groups the water supply to the rats was restricted. In timed water supply (TW) group, the water was supplied twice a day, 10 min for each in fixed hours every day. In empty bottle-served (EB) and water-restricted (WR) groups, the water was served only once a day for 10 min, either in the early morning or evening, and in the other time point scheduled for water supply only an empty bottle without water was provided in the EB group and nothing was given in the WR group. The quantities of drank water and eaten food, weight-gaining, and behavior score were observed every day. The serum level of corticosterone was assayed and the rats were sacrificed with fixative perfusion of 3 d, 7 d or 14 d, respectively, following water restriction (n = 6 for each time point in each group). The brain c-Fos expressions were examined with immunohistochemical method.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The slow down of weight-gaining, rise of serum corticosterone level, occurrence of psychological behavioral manifestations of unpeaceful restlessness such as exploring and attacking, enhance of c-Fos expression in the subfornical organ (SFO), median preoptic nucleus (MnPO), area postrema (AP), hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN), supraoptic nucleus (SON), medial (MeA) and central (CeA) amygdaloid nucleus and ventrolateral septum (LSV) were noticed in both EB and WR groups, except the nucleus of solitary tract (NTS) in which the Fos expression was decreased. The changes of Fos expression in most of nuclei in EB group began at day 3, at least persisted till day 7, and backed down at day 14, while in WR group, similar changes started at day 7 and reached its peak at day 14. In TW group, only the concentration of corticosterone at day 7 was slightly increased and the rest indexes observed were unchanged.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>The results indicate that water restriction induces physical as well as psychological stress responses. And the water restrictions experimentally executed in different modes result in different manifestations of behavioral response and brain immediately early gene expression in discrete brain nuclei/regions.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To gain stable genetic modification of neural stem cells (NSC) that constitutively secrete brain-derived neurotropic factor (BDNF) and to explore the biological role on the survival and neurite outgrowth of cultured dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>BDNF gene fragment from human brain cDNA libraries was obtained by using PCR. With molecular cloning technique, the recombinant stem cell viral vector with report gene was constructed, which is that MSCV-BDNF-IRES(2)-EGFP vector could encode Polycistronic mRNA. Viral particle was packaged by PT67 cell line and infected neural stem cells (mouse clone: C17.2). After selection with cloning cylinder, the expression of BDNF was assessed by immunohistochemistry enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The effects of stable gene-modified neural stem cells on embryonic mouse DRG neurons were evaluated in a dual-chambered cocultivation system at 3th, 10th day.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>RT-PCR analysis demonstrated expression of mRNA for human-BDNF. ELISA confirmed the presence of secreted BDNF 24 h after transfection and showed that the level of BDNF production by NSC-BDNF transfected C17.2 was at a rate of (14.6 +/- 0.8) ng x d(-1) x 10(-6) cells even after 3 months. With immunohistochemical analysis, compared with the control, the longer neurite outgrowth of cultured DRG cells and the more survival neurons were observed in NSC-BDNF transfected cells group.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>BDNF gene could be stably expressed in C17.2 cell line by MSCV, and the BDNF gene-modified NSC markedly enhances the survival and neurite outgrowth of cultured DRG neurons.</p>

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the expressions of IL-1 receptor type Ⅰ(IL-1RI) mRNA and IL-1? protein in the rat carotid body. Methods In situ hybridization,immunofluorescence double staining and Western blotting methods were used. Results The result of in situ hybridization showed that the positive signal of IL-1? mRNA was mainly located in the glomus cells of the carotid body.The result of immunofluorescence double staining showed that IL-1? protein also expressed in the glomus cells of the organ.The Western blotting proved that the IL-1? immunoreactive band appeared at 18kD,consistent with the molecular weight of the cytokine.Conclusion The glomus cells of the rat carotid body not only express IL-1RI mRNA,but also IL-1?.

ABSTRACT

Objective To detect Nogo-A proteolytic fragment in CNS injury models and investigate its proteolytic mechanism as well as potential functions. Methods Western blot was performed to detect Nogo-A proteolytic fragment after spinal cord transection,brain ischemia and KA-induced cerebral cortex injury in rats. Results We detected Nogo-A proteolytic fragment in spinal cord transection and brain ischemia models,whereas no Nogo-A proteolytic fragment was found in KA-induced cerebral cortex injury model.Conclusion\ CNS mechanical and ischemic injury may induce the degradation of Nogo-A by certain mechanisms.

ABSTRACT

Objective To determine whether cultured neural stem cell expresses morphogen molecule sonic hedgehog′s functional receptor patched. Methods Cultured neural stem cell clones were subjected to RT\|PCR after passaged several times in vitro ,the amplification production was sequenced and labeled by digoxingemin and in situ hybridization technique was carried out to detect the cryosection of the neural stem cell clones. Results Most cells in the stem cell clones were positive for sonic hedgehog functional receptor patched,no significant difference was found among the positive cells and the center and peripheral of the stem cell clones.Conclusion\ The sonic hedgehog signal transduction may have important role in the proliferation and differentiation process of neural stem cell.\;[

ABSTRACT

Objective Through transmission electron microscopy we observe the ultrastructure of optic nerve to evaluate the curative effect of optic nerve incision decompression (ONID) for incomplete injury to optic nerve. Methods The optic nerve was crushed for 30s to produce incomplete injury to the optic nerve in rats, and then the rats were divided into two groups. ONID was performed 6 hours after the injury in one group, and in the other group decompression was omitted(non-ONLD). Ultrastructure of optic nerve was observed 1 month, 2 months, 3 months and 6 months later in both groups. Results After 1 month denaturalization of myelin sheaths and axons of the injured optic nerve was severe in non- ONID group, and after 3 months the optic nerve entirely lost its normal structure. On the other hand, denaturalization of myelin sheaths and axons was evidently less intense in ONID group, and the changes in structure of optic nerve were stabilized. Conclusions ONID reduced the speed of degeneration of the injured optic nerve and postpones the process of axon denaturalization, thus protects the optic nerve from secondary injuries.
