ABSTRACT

Methods@#The ovary, oviduct, and uterus of adult female Sprague-Dawley rats in the estrus phase were used to localize TyrPho proteins using an immunohistochemical technique. These proteins were separated and their expression patterns were examined by sodium dodecyl sulfatepolyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and Western blot analysis, respectively. @*Results@#TyrPho proteins were localized in the cytoplasm of the oocyte except the antral fluid; in the granulosa cells, theca cells, and stromal cells of the ovary; at the apical surface of oviductal epithelial cells; and in the basal epithelium and submucosa of the uterine wall. Moreover, we found that 72-, 43-, and 28-kDa TyrPho proteins were localized in the ovary, while 170-, 55-, and 43-kDa proteins were localized in the oviduct. In the uterus, we detected four major bands, corresponding to 61-, 55-, 54-, and 43-kDa TyrPho proteins. @*Conclusion@#Given that these TyrPho proteins were found in major reproductive organs in the estrus phase, these proteins may play important roles in female fertility.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To understand the prevalence of drug resistance in treatment-naive injecting drug users (IDUs) infected with HIV-1 in Guangzhou. Methods: HIV-1 RNA were extracted from the serum specimens of the newly confirmed HIV-1 positive IDUs living in Guangzhou, being infected through injecting drug use and receiving no antiretroviral therapy at the time of confirmation during 2008-2015. Full sequence of pol protease (PR) gene and partial sequence of reverse transcriptase (RT) gene were amplified by nested reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (nested-PCR) and sequenced. After that, data were submitted to the HIV resistance database of Stanford University for drug resistance analysis. Results: Among the 518 HIV-1 infected IDUs, HIV-1pol gene segments were successfully obtained from the serum samples of 407 HIV-1 infected IDUs (78.57%) aged 18-64 (37.44±8.14) years. Among them, males accounted for 89.68% (365/407), those of Han ethnic group accounted for 89.93% (366/407), the unmarried accounted for 55.28% (225/407), and those with education level of junior high school or below accounted for 83.78% (341/407). The distribution of subtypes was predominated by CRF07_BC (47.18%, 192/407), followed by CRF01_AE (23.83%, 97/407), CRF08_BC (22.85%, 93/407), and other subtypes (6.14%, 25/407). The overall prevalence of drug resistance was 3.44% (14/407). The prevalence of drug resistance to protease inhibitors, nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors were 1.47%(6/407), 0.25% (1/407) and 1.72% (7/407) respectively. The mutation rate was 12.29% (50/407). No major drug resistance mutation was detected in protease and nucleoside reverse transcriptase regions. Higher rate of V179E mutation in the non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase region was detected in other subtypes and subtype CRF07_BC. Mutation seemed to have occurred in all 8 cases of subtype CRF55_01B in other subtypes. The highest mutation rate of E138A was detected in subtype CRF08_BC (3.23%). Two cases were resistant to all four drugs of NNRTIs. Conclusions: The prevalence of drug resistance in treatment-naive HIV-1 positive IDUs remained at a relatively low level during 2008-2015, in Guangzhou. Most infections were sensitive to existing antiviral drugs. However, drug resistance surveillance in IDUs infected with HIV should be strengthened to prevent the prevalence of multi-drug resistance and cross drug resistance.

ABSTRACT

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is commonly performed for feeding difficulties, in patients suffering from complications of nasopharyngeal carcinoma and its treatment, namely radiotherapy and surgery. This case report describes the challenges in hemostasis and subsequent re-establishment of enteral access for feeding, in an elderly patient with a history of NPC, treated surgically, followed by radiotherapy, who presented with massive hematemesis following reinsertion of her PEG shortly after an accidental dislodgement. Her previous nasopharyngectomy, wide field radiation therapy, and radical neck dissection precluded nasogastric tube feeding, and the presence of a large hiatus hernia made reinsertion of a new PEG technically challenging. This case highlights the methods used to overcome the above challenges.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To understand the characteristics and dynamic of HIV-1 subtype distribution in men who have sex with men (MSM) in Guangzhou between 2008 and 2015. Methods: HIV-1 RNAs were extracted from serum samples of the individuals newly diagnosed with HIV-1 infection among MSM living in Guangzhou between 2008 and 2015. The pol gene segments of HIV-1 genome from these RNA samples were amplified by nested reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (nested-PCR) and were sequenced. Subsequently, the phylogenetic tree was reconstructed using pol sequences of samples and references together and the subtype of HIV-1 was determined. The distributions of HIV-1 subtypes detected in MSM with different demographic characteristics in different years were compared. Results: A total of 2 210 pol gene segments were successfully obtained from 2 473 serum samples of the MSM. The average age of 2 210 MSM was 30.19 years with standard deviation of 8.22 years, the unmarried MSM and those in Han ethnic group accounted for 73.39% and 90.81%, respectively. The proportion of subtype CRF07_BC (38.10%) was highest, followed by CRF01_AE (34.84%), CRF55_01B (14.62%), B (6.06%), URFs (3.58%), CRF59_01B (2.17%) and other subtypes (0.63%). The annual proportions of subtype B (P=0.000, 99%CI:0.000-0.000), CRF07_BC (χ(2)=14.965, P=0.036), CRF55_01B (χ(2)=18.161, P=0.011) and URFs (P=0.001, 99% CI: 0.000-0.001) were significantly different. The proportion of subtype B showed a gradual decrease from 14.08% to 4.33% (P=0.000, 99%CI: 0.000-0.000), while the proportion of URFs rapidly increased from 0% to 6.40% (P=0.000, 99% CI: 0.000-0.000). The rate of URFs was significantly higher in farmers and migrant workers than in other groups (P=0.017, 99%CI: 0.014- 0.020) and the rate of URFs was higher in individuals who had multi sexual partners (χ(2)=5.733, P=0.017). Conclusions: CRF07_BC and CRF01_AE were the predominant HIV-1 subtypes and multiple subtypes co-circulated among MSM in Guangzhou between 2008 and 2015. The recombinations of HIV-1 continue to occur in MSM. Strengthening behavioral intervention for farmers, migrant workers and individuals who have multi sexual partners has the important epidemiological significance against the emerging and circulating of the novel recombinant virus among MSM in Guangzhou.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To understand the prevalence of drug resistance in treatment-naive HIV infected men who have sex with (MSM) in Guangzhou. Methods: HIV-1 RNA were extracted from the serum specimens of the MSM newly confirmed to be HIV-1 positive, living in Guangzhou and receiving no anti-viral therapy from 2008 to 2015. HIV-1 pol gene segments, including full protease and part reverse transcriptase, were amplified by nested reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (nested-PCR) and sequenced by Sanger. Subsequently, the sequence data were submitted to Stanford University HIV Drug Resistance Database for drug resistance analysis. Results: Among 2 283 HIV infected MSM, HIV-1 pol gene segments were obtained from the serum samples of 1 986 HIV infected MSM aged 16-84 (30.18±8.24) years. Among them, the unmarried accounted for 74.17% (1 473/1 986), those of Han ethnic group accounted for 90.64% (1 800/1 986), those with education level of college or above accounted for 49.65% (986/1 986), those with education level of senior high school or secondary school accounted for 27.14% (539/1 986), those with education level of junior high school or below accounted for 20.89% (415/1 986). The distribution of subtypes was predominated by CRF07_BC (38.22%, 759/1 986) and CRF01_AE (34.49%, 685/1 986). The overall prevalence of drug resistance was 3.32% (66/1 986). The prevalence of resistance to protease inhibitors (PIs), nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs) were 1.36%(27/1 986), 0.65% (13/1 986) and 1.61% (32/1 986), respectively. Subtype B had higher resistance to PIs, NRTIs and NNRTIs and subtype CRF55_01B had highest resistance to NNRTIs compared with other subtypes. In subtype B, the resistant rates to D4T, EFV and NVP were highest (all 4.17%, 5/120), followed by those to NFV, AZT and RPV (all 3.33%, 4/120). In subtype CRF55_01B, the resistant rates to EFV and NVP were highest (all 5.50%, 16/291), followed by those to ETR and RPV (all 5.15%, 15/291). Conclusions: The prevalence of drug resistance in treatment-naive HIV infected MSM in Guangzhou remained at low level and current antiretroviral drugs are generally effective. However, subtype B and CRF55_01B have higher drug resistance.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of hepatitis B vaccination in Fujian province. Methods: Based on the hepatitis B immunization strategy of China, a cohort study was designed, involving the population in Fujian province. The population under study was divided into natural exposure birth cohort before 1992 and the immunization birth cohort after 1992 (including voluntary vaccination cohort and standardized vaccination cohort). By cleaning the database of hepatitis B cases which directly reported through network and looked into the incidence and related death outcomes of acute hepatitis B from 2004 to 2017, the incidence levels of hepatitis B and immunization effects were analyzed and evaluated among different birth cohorts. Results: During the observation period, the overall prevalence of hepatitis B in Fujian province was 44.594 per 100 000, with mortality rate as 0.010 per 100 000. The incidence of natural exposure cohort of birth was 56.885 per 100 000. The incidence of voluntary vaccination cohort of birth was 14.502 per 100 000. Compared with the voluntary vaccination cohort, the risk of hepatitis B increased significantly in the natural exposed cohort (RR=3.923), and the difference was statistically significant (P=0.000 7), with attributable risk as 42.383 per 100 000. The attributable risk ratio was 74.507. The population attributable risk ratio was 70.967%. The population attributable risk was 35.448 per 100 000. The attributable rate in standardized vaccination cohorts born after 2002 was 2.336 per 100 000. Compared with the cohorts born before 1992, the RR was 24.347 (P=0.000 0), the attributable risk was 54.549 per 100 000, and the attributable risk ratio was 95.893%, the population attributable risk ratio was 95.300%, the population attributable risk was 47.371 per 100 000, comparing to the natural exposed population. Conclusions: The effectiveness of hepatitis B immunization program had been remarkable in Fujian province since 1992. However, further studies on the persistency of hepatitis B vaccine immunization and its public health significance still needed to be carried out.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Data from the surveillance program was collected, to analyze the situation of hospitalization and cases of death with recorded causes, in Shenzhen, from 1995 to 2014. Situation of hospitalization and causes of deaths were studied in Shenzhen which had been a fast-developing city with growing number of immigrants so as to provide reference for decision-making on related prevention and control strategies. Methods: Data on hospitalizations and deaths collected from the surveillance program, were classified by both International Classification of Diseases (ICD)- 9 and ICD-10. A database was constructed with methods on related descriptive and trend analysis. Results: Around 6.3 million inpatients were seen in the past two decades in Shenzhen. The top five diseases for hospitalization were pregnancy childbirth and puerperium complications, respiratory diseases, injury and poisoning, digestive system diseases and circulatory system diseases, that accounting for 68.4% of all the hospitalization burden. The number of inpatients increased annually, with an 11 times increase during the past two decades. Proportions for pregnancy childbirth and puerperium complications, circulatory system diseases and urinary system diseases all showed increasing (χ(2)=53 806.94, 6 893.95 and 15 383.14, P<0.01), while proportions for injuries and poisoning, respiratory diseases, digestive system diseases showed a declining trend (χ(2)=131 480.09,1 711.84 and 11 367.66, P<0.01). Number of cumulative inpatient deaths exceeded 60 000, with the top five causes as malignant tumor, circulatory system diseases, injury and poisoning, respiratory system diseases and digestive system diseases, that accounting for 82.28% of all the inpatient deaths. Deaths due to circulatory system diseases, injury and poisoning increased and then decreased. Malignant tumor and respiratory diseases-induced deaths showed an increasing trend (χ(2)=1 546.48, 309.55, P<0.01), while induced deaths from disease of the other systems showed slight changes. The overall case fatality rate showed an annual decline (χ(2)=4 378.63, P<0.01), from 2.23% in 1995 to 0.74% in 2014, with mortality attribute to tumor, circulatory system disease decreased significantly. Conclusions: Shenzhen had been under an ageing transition, with relatively young population living in the city. Chronic diseases such as tumor gradually had become the major causes for heavy hospitalization burden on the population of Shenzhen.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To know the situation of extramarital sexual behaviors and HIV infection in middle-aged and elderly people in Chongqing, and provide reference for AIDS prevention and treatment. Methods: From October to December 2017, a multi-stage sampling method was used to recruit middleaged and elderly people aged ≥50 years who lived in Dazu and Hechuan districts of Chongqing for at least one year, with a sample size of 410. Face-to-face questionnaires survey and HIV antibody test were conducted. Results: A total of 408 people were surveyed, including 313 males and 95 females aged 50-88 (64.93±9.03) years. The HIV infection rate was 1.47% (6/408), with the rate of 1.28% (4/313) in males and 2.11% (2/95) in females. The awareness rate of AIDS related knowledge was 37.50% (153/408). And 18.87% (77/408) of subjects surveyed reported extramarital sexual behaviors, 7.60% (31/408) reported extramarital sexual behaviors in the past half year, the constant condom use rate was 19.35% (6/31). The results of multivariate logistics model analysis on extramarital sexual behaviors showed that the prevalence in males were 39.51 times higher than that in females (OR=39.51, 95%CI: 5.03-310.30), 4.60 times higher in those who were unmarried, divorced or widowed than that in the married or cohabitants (OR=4.60, 95%CI: 1.50-14.05), 2.03 times higher in those with outside activities than those with individual activities (OR=2.03, 95%CI: 1.08-3.81) and 3.94 times higher in those with self-evaluation of emptiness of living state than that in those with engaged life (OR=3.94, 95%CI: 1.86-8.36). Conclusions: The prevalence of extramarital sexual behavior in middle-aged and elderly people in some counties and districts in Chongqing is high. The factors such as gender, marital status, leisure activities, and self-evaluation of living state were related to the prevalence of extramarital sexual behaviors in this population. The condom use rate in extramarital sexual behavior was low. It is necessary to take effective interventions in this population.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To describe the characteristics of newly reported HIV/AIDS cases via non-marital or non-commercial heterosexual transmission and to find out the relative factors in Hangzhou, from 2015 to 2017. Methods: Data were collected through the national HIV/AIDS comprehensive control and prevention data system. Study subjects would include those reported HIV/AIDS cases who were residents of Hangzhou and were infected via non-marital heterosexual transmission, between January 1, 2015 and December 31, 2017. Demographic characteristics and behavioral information were collected. χ(2) test was used to compare different characteristics of the non-married heterosexual transmission subjects. Logistic regression was used to assess factors that associated with non-marital but non-commercial HIV heterosexual transmission with SPSS. 20 software used to analyze statistically. Results: Non-marital HIV heterosexual transmission accounted for 38.03% (1 393/3 663) of the total new reported HIV/AIDS cases in 2015-2017. Out of the 1 393 HIV/AIDS cases, those infected through non-marital but non-commercial heterosexual transmission accounted for 50.83% (708/1 393), and those through non-martial commercial transmission was accounted for 49.17% (685/1 393). Male to female ratio was 3.51 ∶ 1 (1 084/309). Male HIV cases reported that their major way of infection was via non-marital commercial transmission (670/1 084, 61.81%), while female patients reported the way was via non-marital non-commercial (294/309, 95.1%). Results from multivariate logistic analysis showed that the related risk factors and ORs for non-marital but non-commercial transmission appeared as: female (aOR=48.25, 95%CI: 26.94- 88.44),<30 year olds (aOR=2.43, 95%CI: 1.31-4.51), 30-39 year olds (aOR=1.92, 95%CI: 1.11- 3.33), 40-49 year olds (aOR=1.80, 95%CI: 1.08-3.00), married or unmarried (vs. divorced or widowed, aOR=1.57, 95%CI: 1.10-2.24; aOR=1.78, 95%CI: 1.15-2.78), high school and above of education level (vs. primary school and under of education level, aOR=1.82, 95%CI: 1.18-2.80), administrative officers or employee (vs. farmers, aOR=2.03, 95%CI: 1.04-1.91). Number of non- marital partners less than 5 (vs. number of non-marital partners more than 5, aOR=10.65, 95%CI: 6.41-17.42). Conclusions: HIV/AIDS cases with non-marital heterosexual transmission accounted for considerable proportion regarding the HIV transmission in Hangzhou from 2015 to 2017. Differences were found in the following factors as non-marital and non-commercial heterosexual transmission with diverse gender, age, marital status, educational level and occupation among of the HIV/AIDS patients.

ABSTRACT

To establish the experimental model of rabbit mandibular anterior implant repair and evaluate the effects of transforming growth factor (TGF)-β3 and dental pulp stem cells (DPSC) in promoting the bone integration of implant. The New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into experimental group, control group and blank group (6 rabbits for each group) . In the experimental group, the implant area was filled with the mixture of TGF-β3, DPSC and Bio-oss powder. In the control group, the implant area was filled with the mixture of DPSC and Bio-oss powder. In the blank group, the implant area was filled with the mixture of phosphate buffer solution and Bio-oss powder. Eighteen New Zealand rabbits were sacrificed in 2 weeks after procedure. The treated alveolar bone tissue was observed. The bone tissue around the implant were estimated by HE staining, immunocytochemical staining and real-time quantitative PCR. The implants were no shedding nor loose. HE staining shows the blank group had a sparse trabecular bone and a small amount of blood vessel around the implant and no obvious new bone formation. The control group showed that the bone trabecula around the implant was sparse and slender, the osteoblasts were arranged linearly around the trabecular bone, a small amount of new bone formation was found around the implant. In the experimental group, there were more thick and dense trabecular bone around the implant, the surrounding osteoblasts were arranged in clusters. The osteoblasts were active and many new bone formed. Typical bone lacunae, bone cells and a large number of new blood vessels can be observed. Immunohistochemistry showed that the proportion of average positive area in the experimental group, control group, blank group were (24.6±5.3) %, (11.3±2.8) % and (7.6±3.8) % respectively. The expression of bone sialoprotein in experimental group were significantly higher than the other 2 groups(0.000). Real-time quantitative PCR results showed that the expression level of Runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), type Ⅰcollagen (COL-Ⅰ), alkaline phosphatase in the experimental group was higher than in the blank group. The expression level of RUNX2 and COL-Ⅰ in the experimental group was higher than that of the control group (0.023). TGF-β3 has potential to promote the transformation of DPSC into osteoblasts, which can promote the integration of bone around the implant.

ABSTRACT

High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a promising form of thermal ablation of benign thyroid nodules, but evidence supporting its use is scarce. The present review evaluated the efficacy and safety of single-session HIFU treatment of benign thyroid nodules. As reported in the literature, the extent of nodule shrinkage following treatment ranged from 48.8% to 68.8%. Like other forms of ablation, the shrinkage rate was greatest in the first 3-6 months, and the best responders were patients with small (≤10 mL) nodules. Complications were uncommon, but temporary vocal cord palsy occurred in 3%-4% of patients, and was related to the distance between the HIFU beam and the recurrent laryngeal nerve. Despite being safe and efficacious, a larger-scale prospective trial is required.

ABSTRACT

Excessive fructose intake is related to a high prevalence of metabolic syndrome, while little attention has been paid to the impact of maternal high-fructose (HF) intake on the development of metabolic syndrome and organ-specific transcriptome alterations in the offspring. We utilized RNA next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology to analyze the transcriptome expression in four organs (kidney, brain, heart, and urinary bladder) from 1-day, 3-week, and 3-month-old male offspring exposed to maternal HF diet. Maternal HF induced various phenotypes of metabolic syndrome in adult male offspring. We observed that maternal HF exposure induces long-term alterations of gene expression in the brain, heart, kidney, and urinary bladder in adult offspring. Different organs do not respond similarly to maternal HF intake. We found that changes in expression of Errfi1 and Ctgf were shared by four organs at 1 day of age. Also, a number of genes regulating fructose metabolism, glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, fatty acid metabolism, and insulin signalling appear to be regulated by maternal HF intake in different organs at 1 day of age. Our NGS results are of significance to the development of maternal interventions in the prevention of maternal HF-induced organ-specific programming, in order to reduce the global burden of metabolic syndrome.

ABSTRACT

The sip gene encoding for a conserved highly immunogenic surface protein of Streptococcus agalactiae was amplified using polymerase chain reaction [PCR] and subcloned into prokaryotic expression vector pET32a [+] and expressed as a recombinant protein in E. coli BL21 [DE3]. An indirect enzyme linked immunosorbent assay [ELISA] was developed using the purified Sip protein as a coating antigen, which could identify S. agalactiae specific antibody in sera. The coating antigen at a concentration of 3.125 µg/ml, serum diluted to 1:160, and HRP-conjugated secondary antibody concentration at 1:4000 was found to be most effective in exhibiting positive result. The ELISA was found to be highly specific for S. agalactiae that may be used for the detection of the pathogen in mastitis cases, for epidemiological studies and for surveillance.

ABSTRACT

Infectious bursal disease [IBD], a highly contagious and devastating disease in young chicken, is caused by infectious bursal disease virus [IBDV]. To improve the immunogenicity of recombinant IBDV subunit vaccine, an attempt was made to find a new way to prepare IBD vaccine containing glycosylated mVP[2] antigen. Firstly, IBDV mVP[2] gene [with a nucleic acid sequence encoding B cell epitope of IBDV [KFDQML] in the 5'-end of the VP[2], with a nucleic acid sequence encoding B cell epitope of IBDV [LASP] and [His] 6-tag in the 3'-end of the VP[2]] was cloned. Secondly, IBDV mVP[2] protein was expressed in the methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris which can secret glycosylated protein. The recombinant mVP[2] protein could be stained pink with periodic acid-schiff reagents [PAS], which showed that mVP[2] was glycosylated. Finally, IBDV mVP[2] protein was purified with His-Trap [1 mL] affinity chromatography. These results indicate that glycosylated IBDV VP[2] protein modified with epitope peptides can be expressed in Pichia pastoris, which lay the groundwork for the development of a recombinant infectious bursal disease vaccine with high immunogenicity

ABSTRACT

Single and joint toxicity of chloramphenicol and Hg acting on wheat [Triticum aestivum L.] Chinese cabbage [Brassica campestris L.] and corn [Zea mays L.] were investigated. The results showed positive correlations between root elongation inhibition of three plants and concentrations of pollutants added to soil [P<0.01] in test concentration range. In terms of root elongation, wheat was the most sensitive to toxicity of chloramphenicol with an IC[50] [concentration when 50% plants show inhibition] value as high as 26.8 mg/kg and also was the most sensitive one to the toxicity of Hg with the IC[50] value as high as 300.8 mg/ kg. The toxicity of chloramphenicol to the plants is stronger than that of Hg. Chloramphenicol and Hg had an antagonistic effect on the inhibition of root elongation of the three plants when the concentration of added Hg reached 30 mg/kg. Chloramphenicol and Hg had significantly synergistic effects on the inhibition of root elongation when Hg concentration was up to 200 mg/kg [P<0.05]

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To determine the benefit of carotid endarterectomy (CEA) for stroke prevention by reviewing the early and late outcomes of Hong Kong Chinese patients undergoing CEA who have a high reported incidence of intracranial atherosclerotic disease (IAD).</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Fifty-nine Chinese patients underwent 62 CEA. There were 48 males and 11 females, with a mean age of 70 +/- 7 years (range: 52 - 86 years). Twenty-one CEA (34%) were performed for asymptomatic disease. Duplex scan was the primary tool of evaluation prior to surgery. Preoperative angiography was done in 36 instances (58%). All CEA were performed under general anaesthesia with routine intraoperative shunting. The arteriotomy was closed primarily in all patients except three. Patients were followed up regularly with six-monthly Duplex scan surveillance.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>There were 2 perioperative neurological events consisting of one transient ischemic attack and one minor stroke. There was no operative mortality or major morbidity such as bleeding or cranial nerve injury. Mean hospital stay was 6.5 +/- 4 days (range: 3 - 26 days). The patients were followed up for a mean interval of 24 +/- 17 months (range: 1 - 57 months). Seven patients died during follow-up and subsequent neurological events occurred in 5 patients, including 2 fatal strokes. The 3-year survival, freedom from stroke and stroke free survival were 86%, 87% and 83%, respectively. One recurrent stenosis of 80% was detected on follow-up Duplex scan.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>Despite a high incidence of IAD, CEA in Hong Kong Chinese patients is associated with acceptable perioperative morbidity and mortality with satisfactory long-term efficacy in stroke prevention.</p>
