ABSTRACT
Objective@#To measure the body mass index (BMI) of secondary school students and analyze its association with the physical fitness index, so as to improve the physical health of middle school students.@*Methods@#Using a randomized cluster stratified sampling method, 3 813 secondary school students from six cities (Ganzhou, Ji an, Fuzhou, Nanchang, Shangrao and Jiujiang) in Jiangxi Province, China, were selected in September 2022. Questionnaire survey was administered to obtain basic information and to assess the nutritional status and physical fitness tests were conducted among secondary school students. The study was stratified by gender and age, and the Kruskal Wallis H test was used to compare the differences in the mean values of grip strength, sit-ups, standing long jump performance and strength quality among secondary school students with different BMI levels, while the correlation between BMI and strength quality index was inferred by using curve regression analysis.@*Results@#There was statistical significance in the strength quality index of middle school students with different BMI level ( H=56.79, 8.84, P <0.05). Except 13 years old group, the difference of physical fitness by BMI grade strength quality index of boys in other age groups was statistically significant ( H =22.21, 16.23, 17.98, 18.21, 8.08), while the difference of physical fitness by BMI of girls at 14 years old was statistically significant ( H =9.11)( P <0.05). The curve fitting using regression showed that the physical fitness index and BMI of middle school students (boys and girls) show an inverted U-shaped curve. The physical fitness index was higher in the middle region of BMI ( Z-score) and lower in the two end regions, while showing a decreasing trend from the middle to the two ends.@*Conclusion@#An association is found between BMI and physical fitness among secondary school students in Jiangxi Province, and wasting and overweight/obesity are negatively correlated with physical fitness. Greater attention should be paid to the nutritional status of secondary school students to ensure the normal development of physical fitness.
ABSTRACT
Objective@#The aim of the study was to investigate the association of outdoor physical activity and insomnia symptoms with depressive symptoms in college students, so as to provide a theoretical basis for preventing and improving depression of the college students.@*Methods@#A sample survey of 9 349 college students from 4 colleges and universities in 3 provinces in Hubei, Jiangxi and Chongqing were conducted from November to December 2021. The Patient Health Questionnaire, Insomnia Severity Index and outdoor physical activity questionnaire were used to evaluate the depressive symptoms, insomnia symptoms and outdoor activities of college students, respectively. The χ 2 test was used to compare the difference of the positive rate of depressive symptoms in college students. Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the association between outdoor physical activity, insomnia symptoms and depressive symptoms. Generalized linear model was used to analyze the association of interaction effect of outdoor activity and insomnia symptoms with depressive symptoms.@*Results@#The detection rate of depressive symptoms in college students was 37.4%. Significant differences in the detection rate of depressive symptoms were observed among college students with different majors, nationalities, educational backgrounds, family residence, family type, family economic conditions, study burden, number of friends, father s education level, mother s education level( P <0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that outdoor physical activity ( OR=0.51-0.69, P <0.01) and insomnia symptoms ( OR=6.15-21.30, P <0.01) were associated with depressive symptoms( P <0.01). Generalized linear model showed that insomnia symptoms( B =0.57), outdoor physical activity ( B =-0.15) and their interaction terms ( B =-0.02) were associated with college students depression( P <0.05).@*Conclusion@#This study suggests that insufficient time for outdoor physical activity and insomnia symptoms may increase the risk of depressive symptoms in college students. College students with insufficient time for outdoor physical activity and insomnia have a higher risk of developing depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUD/OBEJECTIVES: Arsenic, which causes human carcinogenicity, is ubiquitous in the environment. This study was designed to evaluate modulation of arsenic induced cancer by resveratrol, a phytoalexin found in vegetal dietary sources that has antioxidant and chemopreventive properties, in arsenic trioxide (As2O3)-induced Male Wistar rats. MATERIALS/METHODS: Adult rats received 3 mg/kg As2O3 (intravenous injection, iv.) on alternate days for 4 days. Resveratrol (8 mg/kg) was administered (iv.) 1 h before As2O3 treatment. The plasma and homogenization enzymes associated with oxidative stress of rat kidneys were measured, the kidneys were examined histologically and trace element contents were assessed. RESULTS: Rats treated with As2O3 had significantly higher oxidative stress and kidney arsenic accumulation; however, pretreatment with resveratrol reversed these changes. In addition, prior to treatment with resveratrol resulted in lower blood urea nitrogen, creatinine and insignificant renal tubular epithelial cell necrosis. Furthermore, the presence of resveratrol preserved the selenium content (0.805 +/- 0.059 microg/g) of kidneys in rats treated with As2O3. However, resveratrol had no effect on zinc level in the kidney relative to As2O3-treated groups. CONCLUSIONS: Our data show that supplementation with resveratrol alleviated nephrotoxicity by improving antioxidant capacity and arsenic efflux. These findings suggest that resveratrol has the potential to protect against kidney damage in populations exposed to arsenic.

OBJECTIVETo observe the relative activity of sperm mitochondria and the proportion of ROS-positive sperm before and after capacitation and progesterone (Pg)-induced hyperactivation, and investigate the functional characteristics of sperm mitochondria.

METHODSWe collected 20 samples of normal human spermatozoa that met the criteria of WHO Laboratory Manual for the Examination and Processing of Human Semen (5th ed) and cultured them with the swim-up method in a CO2 incubator at 37 degrees C for 1 hour. We divided the sperm into a pre-capacitation and a capacitated group, and further incubated the capacitated sperm in an upright tube with (Pg-induced group) or without (control group) slow-releasing Pg at 37 degrees C for another hour. Then we determined the relative activity of mitochondria and the percentage of ROS-positive cells in the sperm samples using JC-1 and DCF staining.

RESULTSThe relative activities of mitochondria were significantly increased in the capacitated, control and Pg-induced groups (6.23, 14.36 and 12.33) as compared with the pre-capacitation group (1.42) (P < 0.05), while the percentages of balanced mitochondria (mitochondria with equal amount of high and low electric potentials) remarkably reduced (4.27%, 5.03% and 8.57% vs 21.64%, P < 0.05). The percentages of ROS-positive sperm in the pre-capacitation, capacitated, control and Pg-induced groups were 2.89%, 0.70%, 4.25% and 1.90%, respectively, significantly lower in the capacitated than in the pre-capacitation group (P < 0.01), but dramatically increased in the control group after another hour of swim-up incubation and markedly higher than in the Pg-induced group (P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONProgesterone induction can hyperactive human sperm motility, inhibit the relative activity of mitochondria, keep mitochondria potential at a more balanced level, and reduce the production of ROS, which may help to raise the rate of in vitro fertilization and improve the quality of embryos.

OBJECTIVETo investigate effects of medium- and long-chain fatty acid triacylglycerols (MLCT) on body fat and serum lipid in overweight and hypertriglyceridemic subjects.

METHODSA double-blind, controlled clinical trial was carried out, in which 112 subjects with hypertriglyceridemia were enrolled and divided into two groups, there were 56 subjects in each group. One group was randomized to consume long-chain fatty acid triacylglycerol (LCT), and the other to MLCT. All volunteers were asked to consume 25 - 30 g test oil daily for consecutive 8 weeks. Anthropometric measurements of body weight, body fat weight, waist circumference(WC), hip circumference(HC), WHR (ratio of WC/HC), total fat weight, subcutaneous fat area, visceral fat area, and serum biochemical variables of glucose, total cholesterols(TC), triglycerides(TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C)were measured at the initial and final time of the study.

RESULTS11 subjects were excluded from the study because of various reasons. Of the 101 included cases, there were 50 (male subject 34, 68.0%) and 51 (male subject 33, 64.7%) subjects left in LCT and MLCT group respectively. The proportion of men in MLCT (64.7%, 33/51) was not significantly different (chi(2) = 0.1227, P > 0.05) compared to those in LCT (68.0%, 34/50). The average age of MLCT was (54.2 +/- 12.5) which was not significantly different (t = 0.39, P > 0.05) compared to those in LCT (53.2 +/- 13.0); Body mass index (BMI) of MLCT was (25.9 +/- 3.3) kg/m(2), which was not significantly different (t = 0.08, P > 0.05) compared to those of LCT (25.9 +/- 2.4) kg/m(2). After consumption of test oil for 8 weeks, extent of decrease in BMI, percent of body fat, subcutaneous fat, serum TG and serum LDL-C in overweight subjects of MLCT were (-0.73 +/- 0.61) kg/m(2), (-1.53 +/- 1.32)%, (-16.29 +/- 19.25) cm(2), (-0.57 +/- 0.86) mmol/L and (-0.05 +/- 0.64) mmol/L respectively, those in overweight subjects of LCT were (-0.19 +/- 0.61) kg/m(2), (-0.58 +/- 1.02)%, (4.69 +/- 19.06) cm(2), (0.65 +/- 1.10) mmol/L and (0.38 +/- 0.58) mmol/L respectively, all of them were significantly different (the value of t were -2.70, -2.43, -3.20, -3.81 and -2.09 respectively, all of P value were less than 0.05).

CONCLUSIONConsumption of MLCT can reduce body fat weight and serum triacylglycerol and LDL-C in overweight hypertriglyceridemic subjects under an appropriate dietary regime.
