ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND:In recent years,a variety of lasers have been widely used in various diseases related to stomatology, including the prevention and treatment of dental caries. OBJECTIVE:To investigate the effect of neodymium-doped:yttrium aluminum perovskite(Nd:YAP)laser combined with two remineralizers on early enamel caries in vitro. METHODS:Early enamel caries models in vitro were artificially established by 60 enamel blocks and randomly divided into 6 groups(n=10).Group A did not undergo any treatment but underwent extracorporeal pH circulation.Group B underwent remineralization of dentin(the main component of casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate composite)and extracorporeal pH circulation.Group C underwent remineralization treatment of Sensodyne toothpaste(the main component of bioactive glass)and then underwent extracorporeal pH circulation.Group D received Nd:YAP laser irradiation and extracorporeal pH circulation.Group E was treated with Nd:YAP laser irradiation, with remineralization of dentin, and then with extracorporeal pH circulation. In group F,Nd:YAP laser irradiation was performed, and then Sensodyne toothpaste was used for remineralization, and the extracorporeal pH circulation was performed;the remineralization treatment was conducted twice a day,and the experimental period was 20 days.Group G was a normal control group, without caries or remineralization, but only underwent extracorporeal pH circulation. After the experiment, the microhardness, morphology and Ca/P ratio of the dental enamel surface were measured in each group. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:(1)The surface microhardness value of dental enamel in groups B,C and D was higher than that in group A(P<0.000 1);the surface microhardness value of dental enamel in groups E and F was significantly higher than that in groups B,C and D(P<0.000 1),and the surface microhardness value of dental enamel in group F was significantly higher than that in group E(P<0.000 1).(2)Scanning electron microscopy showed that there were a lot of demineralized pores on the enamel surface of group A.There were mineral deposits on the enamel surface of group B,which were uneven and loose. In group C,there were a lot of mineral deposits on the enamel surface, and demineralized pores were found between the calcified masses. The enamel surface of group D was relatively flat;the demineralized pores were significantly smaller than that of group A,and the enamel column interstitium was damaged. In group E,the mineral deposits on the enamel surface were thicker and the demineralized pores were significantly reduced. The mineralized substances deposited on the enamel surface of group F were most dense and uniform and the demineralized pores were small.(3)The Ca/P ratio on the enamel surface of groups B and C was significantly higher than that of group A(P<0.000 1);the Ca/P ratio on the enamel surface of group E was significantly higher than that of groups B,C and D(P<0.000 1),and the Ca/P ratio on the enamel surface of group F was higher than that of group E(P<0.001).(4)These findings indicate that bioactive glass, casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate composite, and Nd:YAP laser after enamel demineralization can promote the remineralization of early enamel caries.Nd:YAP laser combined with bioactive glass or casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate composite can further strengthen the remineralization of dental enamel caries, and the combination of Nd:YAP laser and bioactive glass has the best effect.

ABSTRACT

Single-position lateral interbody fusion surgery has gained traction over the years because of reduced surgical time and improved operating theater workflow. With the introduction of robotics in spine surgery, surgeons can place pedicle screws with a high degree of accuracy and efficiency; moreover, the robot allows us to localize the disk space and perform endplate preparation accurately with minimal radiation. In this study, we discuss the potential synergistic benefits of integrating robotic-assisted spine surgery and singleposition prone lateral surgery. We share our technique and provide the operative nuances of using the Mazor X Stealth Edition system (Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN, USA). We highlighted the potential synergistic benefits of integrating both the prone lateral and robotic-assisted surgical techniques, including the challenges encountered. This approach is not meant to replace other techniques or be used in all patients. Instead, it adds to our arsenal for managing spine fusion.

ABSTRACT

Methods@#Computed tomographic scans of a total of 50 male and 50 female patients were utilized. The placement of C7 laminar screws was activated employing the new and old trajectories. The success rate, the causes of failure, and the maximum allowable length of each trajectory were compared. @*Results@#Employing the new trajectory, the success rates of the unilaminar and bilaminar screws were 93% and 83%, respectively, which were significantly better than the old trajectory (80%, p<0.0001 and 70%, p=0.0003). The most prevalent cause of failure was laminar cortical breach followed by facet joint violation. The new trajectory also offered significantly longer maximum allowable screw length in unilaminar (32.5±4.3 mm vs. 26.5±2.6 mm, p<0.001), bilaminar cephalic (29.5±3.8 mm vs. 25.9±2.6 mm, p<0.0001) and bilaminar caudal (33.1±2.6 mm vs. 25.8±3.1 mm, p<0.001) screws than the old trajectory. With the new and old trajectories, 70% vs. 6% of unilaminar, 60% vs. 2% of bilaminar caudal, and 32% vs. 4% of bilaminar cephalic screws could be protracted perfectly into the corresponding lateral mass without any laminar cortical or facet joint violation (p<0.0001). @*Conclusions@#The novel trajectory possesses a substantially higher success rate, longer maximum allowable screw length, and higher chance to be extended into the lateral mass (a condition known as a lamino-lateral mass screw) than the old trajectory.

ABSTRACT

Brain diseases and damages come in many forms such as neurodegenerative diseases, tumors, and stroke. Millions of people currently suffer from neurological diseases worldwide. While Challenges of current diagnosis and treatment for neurological diseases are the drug delivery to the central nervous system. The Blood–Brain Barrier (BBB) limits the drug from reaching the targeted site thus showing poor effects. Nanoparticles that have advantage of the assembly at the nanoscale of available biomaterials can provide a delivery platform with potential to raising brain levels of either imaging therapeutic drugs or imaging. Therefore, successful modeling of the BBB is another crucial factor for the development of nanodrugs. In this review, we analyze the in vitro and in vivo findings achieved in various models, and outlook future development of nanodrugs for the successful treatment of brain diseases and damages.

ABSTRACT

Objectives@#This study was conducted to analyze associations between the volume of the fusion mass and clinical outcomes 1 year after posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF).Summary of Literature Review: No study has investigated associations between the size of the fusion mass and clinical outcomes after PLIF. @*Materials and Methods@#The volume of the fusion mass and its clinical correlations after PLIF were analyzed in all patients and in subgroups. When a sufficient amount of local bone was available for grafting, only local bone without a graft extender was used (LbG group, n=20). If an inadequate amount of local bone was present for grafting, a local bone graft with porous hydroxyapatite bone chips was used (LbHa group, n=20). The same amount of demineralized bone matrix was used in both groups. The primary outcome was the relationship between the size of the fusion mass and clinical outcomes in all patients 1 year after surgery. The secondary outcome was a comparison of the size of the fusion mass and clinical outcomes by group. @*Results@#The volume of the fusion mass was not correlated with any clinical outcomes 1 year after surgery, either in the overall group of patients or in the subgroup analysis. @*Conclusions@#The volume of the interbody fusion mass was not related to any clinical outcomes 1 year after surgery. Furthermore, in cases with an insufficient amount of local bone for grafting, porous hydroxyapatite could be a relatively good alternative as a graft extender.

ABSTRACT

Iron-doped titanium dioxide nanosheets was prepared by hydrothermal method using tetrabutyl titanate (C16H36O4Ti) and iron trifluoride (FeF3) and modified on ITO electrode.ITO/Fe : TiO2/CdS photoelectrochemical sensor was fabricated by successive ionic layer absorption and reaction(SILAR) method for determination of copper ion.The band gap of electode material was narrowed by iron doped TiO2 nanosheets, which made its absorption red-shifted and its response range of light was magnified.Based on the sensitization effect of CdS,the absorption and utilization of visible light of sensor was significantly enhanced and the photoelectric signal was amplified via reducing the recombination of electrons and holes. The sensor displayed excellent analytical performance for detection of copper ion with linear range of 0.2-4.0 μmol/L and 4.0-80.0 μmol/L and with the detection limit of 85 nmol/L.The sensor was used to detect copper ion in tap water, drinking water and Yongjiang river water with recoveries ranging from 94% to 111%.

ABSTRACT

Intra-articular therapies, such as steroid injection, viscosupplement injection and acupuncture, are common non-surgical options for patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. With any intra-articular injection or acupuncture procedure, there is a potential for inoculation with bacteria leading to possible knee infection. The authors report a patient who incurred an acute infection found after a total knee arthroplasty attributed to prior acupuncture procedure done as part of conservative treatment.

ABSTRACT

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective fusion level(s)-, age-, and gender-matched analysis. PURPOSE: To determine whether the application of a topical gelatin-thrombin matrix sealant (Floseal) at the end of anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) can reduce the amount of postoperative hemorrhage. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: The effect of the matrix sealant in decreasing postoperative hemorrhage following ACDF has not been reported. METHODS: Matrix sealant was (n=116, study group) or was not applied (n=58, control group) at the end of ACDF. Patients were selected by 1:2 matching criteria of fusion level(s), age, and gender. Seven parameters described below were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The total drain amount for the first 24 hours (8+/-9 versus 27+/-22 mL), total drain amount until the 8-hour drainage decreased to < or =10 mL (8+/-10 versus 33+/-26 mL), and the total drain amount until 6 AM on the first postoperative day (7+/-8 versus 24+/-20 mL) were significantly lower in the study group than the control group (all p<0.001). The time for the 8-hour drainage to decrease to < or =10 mL was significantly lower in the study group (10+/-5 versus 26+/-14 hours, p<0.001). The 8-hour drainage decreased to < or =10 mL on the operation day in most patients (88%) in the study group versus mostly on the first (48%) or second (33%) postoperative day in the control group (p<0.001). The total drain amount until 6 AM on the first postoperative day was 0 mL in 43% of patients in the study group and in 7% in the control group (p<0.001). No patient in either group required hematoma evacuation. CONCLUSIONS: Application of the topical matrix sealant at the end of ACDF can significantly reduce the amount of postoperative hemorrhage.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To explore effects of iron overload on hematopoiesis in mice with bone marrow injury and its possible mechanism (s).</p><p><b>METHODS</b>C57BL/6 mice were divided into control, iron, irradiation, irradiation+iron groups. The iron-overloaded model of bone marrow injury was set up after mice were exposed to the dose of 4 Gy total body irradiation and (or) were injected iron dextran intraperitoneally. Iron overload was confirmed by observing iron deposits in mice and bone marrow labile iron pool. Additionally, the number of peripheral blood and bone marrow mononuclear cells and the frequency of erythroid cells and myeloid cells were counted and hematopoietic function was assessed.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>(1)Iron overload occurred by bone marrow biopsy and flow cytometry analysis. (2)Compared with control group, the number of platelets [(801.9±81.2)×10⁹/L vs (926.0±28.2)×10⁹/L] and BMMNC and the frequency of erythroid cells and myeloid cells decreased. Moreover, hematopoietic colony forming units and single-cell cloning counts decreased significantly in irradiation group (P<0.05). (3)Compared with irradiation group, the number of platelets [(619.0±60.9)×10⁹/L vs (801.9±81.2)×10⁹/L] and the frequency of erythroid cells and myeloid cells decreased; moreover, hematopoietic colony forming units and single-cell cloning counts decreased significantly in irradiation+iron group (P<0.05). (4)Compared with irradiation group, ROS level increased by 1.94 fold in BMMNC, 1.93 fold in erythroid cells and 2.70 fold in myeloid cells, respectively (P<0.05).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>The dose of 4 Gy total body irradiation caused bone marrow damage and iron overload based on this injury model, which could damage bone marrow hematopoietic function aggravatingly. And further study found that iron overload was closely related to increased ROS level in BMMNC. The findings would be helpful to further study the injury mechanism of iron overload on the hematopoiesis of bone marrow.</p>

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate the biomechanical properties of fibroblasts for rabbit experimental myopia after Posterior Scleral Reinforcement (PSR) treatment, and discuss the mechanism of PSR in myopia treatment as viewed from biomechanics. Method 45 rabbits of three week old were randomly monocular treated by eyelid suture to prepare experimental myopia eye. After 60 days, the experimental myopia eyes were divided into two groups randomly. Group A was treated by PSR. Group B was treated by similar operation without placing reinforce strap. After three months and six month, the fibroblasts from each group were isolated and cultured in vitro respectively. The cultured cells were then determined to be fibroblasts by using immunocyte chemistry method. Micropipette aspiration technique was used to investigate the viscoelastic properties of the fibroblasts from each group with mechanical model of semi infinite somatic cells. ResultsThree months after operation, the viscoelastic properties of the scleral fibroblasts in Group A and Group B exhibit no significant difference (P>0.05) three months and six months as well (P>0.05) after operation with the equilibrium modulus, E∞, and apparent viscosity, μ of the scleral fibroblasts in Group A (E = (361.2± 121.1)Pa、μ=(2928.2±669.4)Pa·s) compared with that in Group B (E =(347.6± 82.1)Pa、μ=(2820.6± 593.5)Pa·s). Neither in Group A nor Group B, the E∞ and μ at different stages after operation have significant difference (P>0.05). The E∞ and μ in transition zone tissues at different stages after operation have no significant difference(P>0.05) either. Conclusions The enhancement of PSR is caused by transition zone tissues and the strip itself.

ABSTRACT

Sensory, chemical, microbiological quality and bacterial flora on fresh Pseudosciaena crocea were qualitatively and quantitatively investigated. The results showed that total viable counts and total volatile basic nitrogen reached 5. 51?0. 25Log10cfu/g, 7. 84?2. 25mg/100g respectively. 279 strains of bacteria were isolated and 84.2% of them were gram negative bacteria, a small percentages of gram positive bacteria were detected (6. 1% ) . The predominant bacterial floras were composed of Enterobacteriaceae (14. 7% ), Aeromonas spp. (12. 5% ), Acinetobacter spp. (11. 5% ) and Moraxella spp. (11. 1% ) . A few percent of Pseudomonas spp. , Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and other bacteria were also found. The high number of Enterobacteriaceae showed that bacterial contamination on Pseudosciaena crocea, was mainly from cultural water field and polluted seriously by non-borne bacteria, and it should be paid attention to.
