ABSTRACT

Objectives: to analyze the spectrum of skin lesions at our institute, and study the age, sex and anatomic distribution pattern. We will also classify the lesions into major categories and determine the incidence of each subcategory

Materials and Methods: we carried a three and half year's retrospective study of skin biopsies which were collected from King Khalid Hospital recording system in Hail region in a time period from January 2014 till April 2017

Results: The highest percentage was in the age group 30-39 year [25.1%] with a male preponderance of 52.8%. The head, neck and face were most frequently involved body parts [46.06%]. Cysts were the most common [32.3%] which included the sub-types epidermoid cyst, ganglion, dermoid cyst, pilar cyst and brachial cleft cyst. Nevi [19.4%] including intradermal nevus, congenital nevus and blue nevus were the second most common skin lesion. Correlation with the histopathologic diagnosis was positive in 94.9% cases and negative in 5.1% cases

ABSTRACT

Aim of the work: this study was carried out to determine the prevalence and risk factors of the occurrence of gallstone disease among the Saudi Arabian population. Patients and methods: a retrospective survey was done among 100 patients with gallstone disease from November 2016 to March 2017 using a structured data collection tool

Results: The results showed that 60% of those with the disease were women, while only 40% were men and 29% belonged to age group 30-39 years old. Among the risk factors studied, there was a statistically significant association between the disease and fever and lipid profile, total cholesterol, LDL, and TAG [p-value, <.01]. In addition to fever, majority of the patients also complained for right upper quadrant pain. Perhaps primary health care physicians should consider fever with right upper quadrant pain as warning signs for gallstone disease which should warrant more sensitive procedures like ultrasonography for early detection of the disease. Fundamental knowledge of gallstone disease is essential for clinicians so as proper management be offered to ailing patients

ABSTRACT

Aim of the work: gastrointestinal stromal tumours [GISTs] are a type of mesenchymal tumours of the gastrointestinal [GI] tract. The tumour can originate anywhere from the oesophagus to the rectum, but most often comes from the stomach or small intestine. Despite the fact that GISTs are the most common mesenchymal neoplasms of the GI tract, they remain a diagnostic challenge because of the overlapping clinicopathologic features with GIST. Large GISTs are usually associated with complications such as gastrointestinal [GI] haemorrhage, GI obstruction, and bowel perforation. GISTs are predominantly found in people in their 60s, but a small population can develop it a younger age

Patient and methods: this was a report the case of a 65-years old male presented to our hospital with upper gastrointestinal bleeding

Results: vomiting and severe anaemia findings were detected in diagnostic image studies which suggested a gastric GIST without evidence of metastatic disease; therefore, totally tumour excision was performed. Cytologic and inmuno-histochemistry analysis confirmed diagnosis of GISTs

Conclusion: the present case report highlighted the need of early recognition and appropriate investigation of gastrointestinal symptoms at all ages for ruling out potential malignancy

ABSTRACT

Background: Diabetes is associated with increasing prevalence of chronic kidney disease [CKD] and progression of the disease. Therefore, objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of diabetes among patients with CKD in Hail, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia [KSA]

Methodology: This is a cross-sectional study carried in the nephrology outpatient's clinic in King Khalid Hospital. A total of 200 patients known to have CKD were included in the study

Results: The study included 200 patients, of whom 98 [49%] were females and 102 [51%] were males, the mean age of the population study is 55.6 years. The females were significantly lower age than the males. The overall prevalence of diabetes in patients with CKD was 69% among them 73.9% with retinopathy. Diabetes and female gender are associated with more advanced stage of CKD. The mean average of eGFR was significantly lower in patients with diabetes and it inversely correlates with HbA1c. The mean time of onset of CKD in diabetic patients after the diagnosis of diabetes is 11.7 +/- 0.67 years, females are significantly lower than males in the meantime of onset of CKD after the diagnosis of diabetes. Association of diabetes and hypertension in patients with CKD 87.7% were hypertensive among them 72.6% were diabetics

Conclusion: The role of diabetes as a risk factor for CKD and ESRD is higher than it has been estimated in previous studies in other regions in Saudi Arabia. Females are at higher risk of CKD and eventually ESRD than males

ABSTRACT

Background: allergic rhinitis [AR] is considered a worldwide health disease therefore the lack of knowledge would result in poor adherence to management and preventive protocols and increasing the prevalence of AR

Objectives: evaluating the knowledge, attitude and practice[KAP] of Saudi adult subjects toward AR in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia [KSA]

Methods: a cross sectional study conducted on 900 Saudi adult subjects admitted to primary health care centers. The subjects were interviewed and filled up a questionnaire including the respondent's demographics, questions related to knowledge, attitude and practice

Results: most of the respondents aged from31-45 years old, 59.7% were females and 49% were graduated from college.30% of participants had a family history of allergic rhinitis and 34% suffered from allergic rhinitis. Inadequate KAP was found among the participants with higher KAP scores related with higher educational degree. But there were no association between KAP level and gender or age

Conclusion: an inadequate knowledge was found among most of respondents thus resulting in poor attitude and practice pattern. Also, higher educational levels were associated with higher KAP scores
