ABSTRACT

Canine coronavirus is a single-stranded RNA virus that causes enteritis in dogs of any age. Coronaviral enteritis is seldom definitively diagnosed, since it is usually much less severe than many other types of enteritis and is self-limiting. Conventional diagnostics for the canine coronaviral enteritis such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR), virus isolation, and electron microscopic examination are inappropriate for small animal clinics due to the complicated experimental processes involved. Therefore, a commercially available lateral flow test kit based on chromatographic immunoassay techniques was tested to evaluate its performance as a first-line diagnostic test kit that could be used in clinics. The coronavirus antigen test kit detected canine coronavirus-infected dogs with 93.1% sensitivity and 97.5% specificity. The detection limit of the test kit was between 1.97 × 10⁴/mL and 9.85 × 10³/mL for samples with a 2-fold serial dilution from 1.25 × 10⁶ TCID₅₀ (TCID₅₀, 50% tissue culture infectious dose). Additionally, the test kit had no cross-reactivity with canine parvovirus, distemper virus, or Escherichia coli. Overall, the commercially available test kit showed good diagnostic performance in a clinical setting, with results similar to those from PCR, confirming their potential for convenient and accurate use in small animal clinics.

ABSTRACT

A 30-year-old woman in her first pregnancy was admitted with headache and horizontal diplopia indicating left abducens nerve palsy. Brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed a cerebral venous thrombosis. She had thrombocytosis in the peripheral blood, and a genetic test for thrombocytosis revealed the presence of the valine-to-phenylalanine (V617F) mutation of the Janus kinase 2 (JAK2) gene. Treatment with low-molecular-weight heparin resolved her symptoms of headache and diplopia. The presence of genetic disorders such as the JAK2-V617F gene mutation should be assessed in patients with cerebral venous thrombosis and coexisting thrombocytosis.

ABSTRACT

This is a case report of systemic lupus erythematosus presented as a transverse myelitis. Central nervous system involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus is a relatively common complication. But the transverse myelitis as a central nervous system involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus is rare and the transverse myelitis as the first manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus has not been reported in Korea. Thus we report a case of the transverse myelitis as a first manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus with the literature review.

ABSTRACT

Malignant melanoma arising from the mucosal surface is a rare, virulent malignant neoplasm frequently associated with an extremely poor prognosis. The sites of initial presentation include the nose, oral cavity, larynx, vulva, vagina, anal canal and rectum. Primary melanoma of the rectum is extremely rare and its histogenesis is controversial. We present a case of primary malignant melanoma arising from the rectum in a 77-year-old woman who presented with intermittent anal bleeding for 2 months. Colonoscopic examination of the rectum revealed a 3.5 3.0 2.7 cm exophytic tumor with a granular surface in the rectum, 5cm from the anal verge. Black colored pigmentation was detected. Distant metastasis to liver was detected on abdominal CT scan. Light microscopy of tumor revealed malignant melanocytes surrounded by normal mucosa. The tumor cells reacted positively for immunohistochemical staining with S-100 protein and HMB-45. Clinical and laboratory examination excluded the presence of melanoma at sites other than rectum. Local excision of the tumor was performed.

ABSTRACT

Hypopituitarism is not a common cause of delayed puberty, however it should always be considered, especially if there are such signs as severe dwarfism, dollish face, truncal obesity, small hands and feet, and microgenitalia. Either congenital or acquired, hypopituitarism can be resulted from hypothalamic and hypophyseal lesions. The clinical feature can be diverse depending on age of the patients, rate of progression, degree of hormone deficiency and characteristics of the lesion. The recent high interest in delayed puberty and the improved detection of hypothalamic hypophyseal lesions using combined pituitary fuction stimulation test, brain CT and MRJ, has made the differential diagnosis of hypopituitarism possible as the cause of delayed puberty. MRI has shown hypophyeal hypoplasia accompanied by anterior pituitary hypoplasia and ectopic neurohypophysis in some of the patients with hypopituitasm, and although the anatomical abnormality around the hypophysis in these patients is considered the reason for hypopituitarism, the pathogensis of which has not yet to be known. We, here, report a case of delayed puberty by hypopituitarism due to hypoplasia of anterior pituitary gland, pituitary stalk agenesis and ectopic neurohypophysis with brief review of the litereature.
