ABSTRACT

Purpose@#There has been a lack of study on the pains of Korean archers, who have been getting remarkable results in international competitions. In this study, we investigated the epidemiology of shoulder pain, which is known as the most commonly complained symptom of Korean archers. @*Methods@#The participants were 58 elite archers in the city of Gwangju, South Korea. The method of the study was a retrospective cohort study by questionnaire and ultrasound and physical examination. Variables of individual characteristics, training patterns, the character of pain were analyzed in different age groups. Furthermore, groups were divided into those with shoulder pain and those without pain to analyze each group’s shoulder function. @*Results@#The most common injury was shoulder injury (65.6%), and hand injury was the second-highest prevalent injury (29.3%). These two injuries were most prevalent in all age groups. Among 58 participants, 40 showed shoulder pain, but most were mild (n=30, 51.7%) and severe pain was observed in some participants (n=2, 3.5%). Mild pain was most common in each group and it showed the highest prevalence in college students (70.0%). Pain was most observed in the drawing arm, and it was triggered most when drawing the bow. In the shoulder function test category, Constant-Murley score and American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons score were observed the lowest in the group with shoulder pain with statistical significance. @*Conclusion@#Shoulder injury had a high prevalence in Korean archers. Correspondingly, those with shoulder pain had lower shoulder function test scores.

ABSTRACT

Background@#and Purpose: The main difficulty when diagnosing leptomeningeal metastases (LMSs) is the low sensitivity of cytology. Cancer cells release cell-free DNA (cfDNA) during proliferation and apoptosis, and so we analyzed the cfDNA level as a biomarker for LMSs in hematologic malignancy. @*Methods@#This study prospectively enrolled 20 patients with hematologic malignancy who underwent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis. LMS was diagnosed based on both CSF cytology and clinical findings. @*Results@#The CSF level of cfDNA was higher in patients with LMSs (108.17±84.84 ng/mL, mean±standard deviation) than in non-LMS patients (14.23±2.78 ng/mL). The sensitivity of cfDNA was higher than that of cytology (100% vs. 87%). @*Conclusions@#The cfDNA level in the CSF can be used as a supplemental marker for diagnosing LMS in hematologic malignancy patients.

ABSTRACT

Point mutations in the human cardiac homeobox gene NKX2.5 are associated with familial atrial septal defect (ASD), atrioventricular (AV) conduction disturbance, as well as sudden cardiac death. To date, more than 60 NKX2.5 mutations have been documented, but there are no reports in Korea. We are reporting the first Korean family with ASD and AV block associated with a novel mutation in the NKX2.5 coding region. A 9-year-old boy presented with a slow and irregular pulse, and was diagnosed with secundum ASD and first degree AV block. The boy's father, who had a history of ASD correction surgery, presented with second degree AV block and atrial fibrillation. The boy's brother was also found to have secundum ASD and first degree AV block. There were two sudden deaths in the family. Genetic testing revealed a novel mutation of NKX2.5 in all affected members of the family.

ABSTRACT

The use of microorganisms and their secreted molecules to prevent plant diseases is considered an attractive alternative and way to supplement synthetic fungicides for the management of plant diseases. Strain BS062 was selected based on its ability to inhibit the mycelial growth of Botrytis cinerea, a major causal fungus of postharvest root rot of ginseng and strawberry gray mold disease. Strain BS062 was found to be closely related to Streptomyces hygroscopicus (99% similarity) on the basis of 16S ribosomal DNA sequence analysis. Postharvest root rot of ginseng and strawberry gray mold disease caused by B. cinerea were controlled up to 73.9% and 58%, respectively, upon treatment with culture broth of Streptomyces sp. BS062. These results suggest that strain BS062 may be a potential agent for controlling ginseng postharvest root rot and strawberry gray mold disease.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Recently, genotypic identification of anaerobes is emerging as an alternative to the phenotypic method. In this study, we evaluated the performance of Vitek 2, API 20A and 16s rRNA gene sequencing for the identification of anaerobic bacteria. METHODS: A total of 35 anaerobe reference strains were identified using Vitek 2, API 20A and 16s rRNA gene sequencing. We evaluated the performance of three methods on the basis of the accurate identification rates. RESULTS: The Vitek 2, API 20A and 16s rRNA gene sequencing identified 54.3, 15.4, and 94.3% of test strains correctly at the species level and identified 77.1, 42.3, and 100% at the genus level, respectively. Results of the McNemar's test showed that there was a significant difference between each of the three identification methods in species level identification (P value<0.05). CONCLUSION: 16s rRNA gene sequencing showed better performance than Vitek 2 or API 20A for anaerobic bacteria. Considering its excellent performance, 16s rRNA gene sequencing may be useful for accurate identification of anaerobic bacteria that cannot be correctly identified by phenotypic methods.

ABSTRACT

The use of a microorganism, or its secretions, to prevent plant disease offers an attractive alternative or supplement to synthetic fungicides for the management of plant disease without the negative effects of chemical control mechanisms. During a screening for microorganisms with the potential to be used as microbial fungicides, Bacillus sp. BS061 was isolated from a plant leaf. The strain BS061 potently inhibited the mycelial growth of Botrytis cinerea, and significantly reduced disease incidence of powdery mildew in cucumber and strawberry. We also found that the culture filtrate of BS061 inhibited the mycelial growth of various plant pathogens.

ABSTRACT

A Bacillus sp. BS061 significantly reduced disease incidence of gray mold and powdery mildew. To identify the active principle, the culture filtrate was partitioned between butanol and water. The antifungal activity against B. cinerea was evident in the butanol-soluble portion, and active substances were identified as cyclic lipopeptides, iturin A series, by nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry (NMR) and mass analysis. Interestingly, antifungal activity against powdery mildew was observed in the water-soluble portion, suggesting that cyclic lipopeptides have no responsibility to suppress powdery mildew. This finding reveals that biocontrol agents of Bacillus origin suppress gray mold and powdery mildew through the secretion of different bioactive substances.

ABSTRACT

A total of 62 bacterial isolates were obtained from Gomsohang mud flat, Mohang mud flat, and Jeju Island, Republic of Korea. Among them, the isolate CNU114001 showed significant antagonistic activity against pathogenic fungi by dual culture method. The isolate CNU114001 was identified as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens by morphological observation and molecular data analysis, including 16SrDNA and gyraseA (gyrA) gene sequences. Antifungal substances of the isolate were extracted and purified by silica gel column chromatography, thin layer chromatography, and high performance liquid chromatography. The heat and UV ray stable compound was identified as iturin, a lipopeptide (LP). The isolate CNU114001 showed broad spectrum activity against 12 phytopathogenic fungi by dual culture method. The semi purified compound significantly inhibits the mycelial growth of pathogenic fungi (Alternaria panax, Botrytis cinera, Colletotrichum orbiculare, Penicillium digitatum, Pyricularia grisea and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum) at 200 ppm concentration. Spore germ tube elongation of Botrytis cinerea was inhibited by culture filtrate of the isolate. Crude antifungal substance showed antagonistic activity against cucumber scleotiorum rot in laboratory, and showed antagonistic activity against tomato gray mold, cucumber, and pumpkin powdery mildew in greenhouse condition.

ABSTRACT

Sarcoidosis is a multi-systemic granulomatous disease of unknown cause, which most commonly involves lung, skin, eye, liver and lymph nodes. Herein, we report a case of sarcoidosis presented with massive ascites. A 47-year-old male patient visited our hospital with symptoms of general weakness and weight loss from past 4 months. Abdomen computed tomography showed multiple lymphadenopathy and hepatosplenomegaly. Lymph node biopsy demonstrated non-caseating granulomas. After biopsy, development of massive uncontrolled ascites was noted. Liver biopsy showed non-cirrhotic hepatic and portal fibrosis and omental biopsy showed submesothelial diffuse fibrosis and focal chronic inflammation, which were suggestive of hepatic and peritoneal involvement in sarcoidosis. Ascites was controlled after subsequent treatment with corticosteroids and methotrexate.

ABSTRACT

The three components of taxonomy are classification, nomenclature and identification. Traditionally, bacterial classification and identification were performed based on the morphology and the biochemical data of the bacteria. In newer theories, or so-called natural concepts, the relationships between bacteria are based on the overall similarities of both the phenotypic and genotypic characteristics. The polyphasic taxonomy, or current taxonomy, describes the integration of all of the available genotypic, phenotypic, and phylogenetic information into a consensus type of general-purpose classification. When routine identification methods that are based on the biochemical tests fail, alternative procedures such as complete 16s rRNA gene sequence analysis are required. Although the results of 16s rRNA gene sequence analysis have not been fully discriminatory to differentiate closely related species, they may guide the additional analyses that are required for species identification.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine the yearly prevalence and genotype distribution of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae collected over a 3-yr period in Gwangju, Korea. METHODS: Clinical isolates of E. coli and K. pneumoniae collected at Chosun University Hospital from September 15, 2005 to September 14, 2008 were evaluated. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed using the Vitek II system (bioMerieux, USA) and agar dilution methods. Screening for ESBL and AmpC beta-lactamase genes was performed using PCR amplification of plasmid DNA followed by direct sequencing of the PCR products. RESULTS: The percentage of ESBL-producing isolates was 12.6% (196/1,550) for E. coli and 26.2% (294/1,121) for K. pneumoniae. The ESBL gene sequencing results showed that the most prevalent ESBL types were CTX-M (93.5%) and SHV (12.9%) in E. coli, and SHV (73.2%) and CTX-M (46.3%) in K. pneumoniae. The most common ESBL in E. coli was CTX-M-15-like, followed by CTX-M-14-like, SHV-2a-like, and SHV-12-like. The most prevalent ESBL type in K. pneumoniae was SHV-12, followed by CTX-M-14-like and CTX-M-15-like. Fifty-one percent (21/41) of ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae with ESBL types verified by sequencing also had DHA-1-like AmpC beta-lactamases. However, none of the ESBL-producing E. coli was positive in the AmpC beta-lactamase PCR analysis. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, the most common types of class A ESBLs identified were CTX-M-15-like in E. coli and SHV-12-like in K. pneumoniae.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the contents and trends of smoking and smoking cessation of adolescents in Korea. METHODS: The subjects were 315 researches from 1997 to 2008 in Korea. They were examined in terms of subjects, research design, key words, types of intervention, times of intervention, and dependent variables for experimental research, and in terms of subjects, concepts, research questions and research methods for qualitative research. RESULTS: Of the studies 52.4% were master's theses, and 22.9% of the subjects were male high school students. The most common research design was descriptive design. Major concepts studied were related to emotional cognitive variables. Among 80 experimental researches, 70% were about smoking cessation programs. The number of qualitative studies was only 6. Their concepts were smoking experience, motives for smoking cessation, smoking process, and motives for smoking. A major research question was: What does smoking mean to adolescents? CONCLUSION: More research should be done for the female students' smoking and smoking cessation. Also, research that adapts educational programs for smoking and smoking cessation needs to be performed through at least a 10 times longer period and in regular basis to get desirable results.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a group counseling program on high school students'depression and suicidal ideation. METHODS: This research was conducted as a quasi-experimental pretest and posttest control and experimental group methodological comparison study. The subjects were 25 high school students (Exp = 12, Cont = 13) in U City. The depression and suicide prevention program in this study was based on the Ellis' ABC Model. The experimental group participated in the program through eight sessions, but the control group did not receive treatment. Data were collected from November 4 to November 28, 2008, and analyzed using the SPSS/WIN program by frequency, Mann-Whitney, means, standard deviation and Wilcoxon signed rank test. RESULTS: There was statistically significant difference in depression (z = -2.983, p = .003) between the two groups. Suicidal ideation also decreased significantly (z = -2.847, p = .004) in the experimental group. CONCLUSIONS: After the eight sessions of the group counseling program for preventing depression and suicidal ideation, it was found that the program was effective to lower the score of depression and suicidal ideation. The results of this study suggest that a school-based prevention program for adolescents should be developed according to depression and suicidal ideation level.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The study aimed to compare characteristics associated with smoking and smoking cessation of those who had succeeded in smoking cessation. METHODS: Data were collected from January to June, 2008. The subjects were 9,819 smokers who were registered at the smoking cessation clinic of public health centers in Incheon. Four characteristics (demographic, health promotion, smoking, smoking cessation) were compared between 6-week (short-term) and 6-month (long-term) success groups. RESULTS: There was a significant difference between the 6-week and 6-month success groups for smoking cessation in demographic characteristics (gender, age, job, social security), health promotion (BMI, alcohol dependency, BP), smoking (first smoking age, smoking duration, expiration CO concentration, nicotine dependency), and smoking cessation (attempt to quit smoking, reason for smoking cessation, information source for registration). CONCLUSION: The group of short-term smoking cessation success was younger than the other. Also, short-term success group was of lower socioeconomic class than the other. The 6-month success group had a larger number of attempts to quit smoking. Therefore, smoking cessation policy should be focused more on younger people and those in lower socioeconomic status. These groups should be given advice on smoking cessation motives and more frequent counseling for smoking cessation.
