ABSTRACT

Diabetic macular edema is one of the leading causes of visual acuity loss in people with diabetes. It produces blurry vision, particularly in the centre of the vision field, floaters and black spots in front of the eyes etc. The treatment recommended by modern science is laser photocoagulation and anti-VEGF injection, which is pricey and does not ensure visual reversal in the patient. In Ayurveda text, diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema are not directly described but etiopathogenesis of eye diseases and Prameha gives an idea of possible correlation between these two diseases. So, DME resembles Timira (Pramehajanya). In Ayurveda, Timira has been explained in detail by our Acharyas. Clinical manifestations of Timira are Vihwal Drishti (blurred vision), Makshika Mashaka Kesha Jaala Pashyati (floaters), Tamasa Darshanam (Scotoma- black spots in front of eyes) and Nasa Akshi Yuktani Vipritani Vikshate (Metamorphopsia or distorted vision) which has similarity with features of DME. Material & Methods: In the present study, a female patient aged 51 years, visited the Shalakya Tantra OPD of National Institute of Ayurveda, Jaipur, with complaining of Blurriness of vision since 6 months and uncontrolled blood sugar level. Result: Blood sugar level was controlled and saw reduction in subjective and objective parameters. Discussion: Following an Ayurvedic drugs and routine will assist to slow the advancement of the condition, prevent further diabetes complications, and improve quality of life.

ABSTRACT

In ayurvedic system of traditional medicine, 'medhyarasayanas' — decoction of selected plants are used to improve intellect or cognition abilities. Here, we investigated one such polyherbal formulation (PHF) with ingredients Bacopa monniera, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Valeriana wallechii and Withania somnifera used as a facilitator of learning, retention and recall. We evaluated the safety of this PHF in animal models. We performed acute oral toxicity test using 2000 mg/kg of the formulation as per OECD guideline 423 and observed for toxicity over 14 days. Thereafter, we divided them into four groups of six animals each and administered Normal saline 5 mL/kg, The PHF (Wilmer®) @500, 1000 and 2000 mg/kg in the respective groups over 28 days. We observed no mortality or physical and behavioural abnormalities in both acute and subacute toxicity study. On the 28th day, animals were sacrificed, blood collected for estimation of haematological and biochemical parameters and histopathological examination of organs was performed. There was significant difference (P <0.05) in Mean ± SEM values of haemoglobin, total cholesterol, total protein, ALT, AST, ALP and serum creatinine in the test groups compared to control as analysed by One-way ANOVA followed by Tukey’s multiple comparison test. We observed steatosis and ballooning of hepatocytes, lymphocytic periglomerular infiltrate, eosinophilic hyaline casts and renal tubular coagulation necrosis in histopathology of test groups. Haematologic abnormalities (decrease in haemoglobin concentration), hepatotoxic, nephrotoxic and dyslipidemic effects of the tested PHF were seen in the rats in subacute toxicity study over 28 days, which could be due to the individual plant products, microbial contamination or heavy metals in the formulation in excess of regulatory limits. Hence, it needs further safety evaluation in animals and humans.

ABSTRACT

Nano-ayurvedic medicine is an emerging field in which nanoparticles are functionalized with active principles of potent ayurvedic herbs to enhance their efficacy and target-specific delivery. Scientific advances in the past couple of decades have revealed the molecular mechanisms behind the anticancer potential of several ayurvedic herbs, attributed chiefly to their secondary metabolites including polyphenols and other active substances. With the advancement of nanotechnology, it has been established that size-, shape-, and surface-chemistry-optimized nanoparticles can be utilized as synergizing carriers for these phytochemicals. Nano-ayurvedic medicine utilizes herbs that are commonly used in Ayurveda to functionalize different nanoparticles and thereby enhance their potency and target specificity. Studies have shown that the active phytochemicals of such herbs can be coated onto the nanoparticles of different metals, such as gold, and that they work more efficiently than the free herbal extract, for example, in inhibiting cancer cell proliferation. Recently, an Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (AYUSH)-based clinical trial in humans indicated the anticancer potential of such formulations. Nano-ayurvedic medicine is emerging as a potential treatment option for hyperproliferative diseases.

ABSTRACT

In this review report, an attempt made to present an overview of schizophrenia & those drugs which are used in treatment of psychiatric disorders as well as some treatments for psychosis. In 1908, the schizophrenia word was coined by Eugen Bleuler (Swiss psychiatrist). The use antipsychotics as medication began from 1933 in France. Laborit and Huguenard administrated the aliphatic Phenothiazine, Chlorpromazine during surgery due to its potential anesthetic effect, in 1951. Thereafter, Hamon and Delay extended the use of this treatment in psychiatric patients. Due to abnormal brain structure & functioning occurs schizophrenia as well as psychotic disorders. Schizophrenia a condition in people unable to differentiate between real & imaginary world. In this article we all know about Schizophrenia & Antipsychotics drugs. In that include symptoms & their types, cause, risk factor, antipsychotics classification & their pharmacology etc. In that there are three types of symptoms namely positive, Negative, Cognitive. Exact causes of schizophrenia are unknown. In the treatment of Schizophrenia or psychotics disorders the physicians commonly used antipsychotic medicines or drugs to treat their symptoms. Antipsychotic drugs further divided into two major classes namely Typical & Atypical antipsychotics. Chlorpromazine is the first medicine or drug which is used to treat symptoms of schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorders. Clozapine is most effective or potent antipsychotics drug. Which is belongs to the atypical antipsychotics which are reducing the risk of schizoaffective patients. Physicians recommend a combination of antipsychotics along with psychotherapy. In this article we have covered Brahmyadiyoga is an Ayurvedic remedies.

ABSTRACT

Alternative forms of medicine like Ayurveda have witnessed a rise in global popularity over the recent decades. Drugs used in Ayurveda, particularly those of mineral origin can lead to toxic effects due to heavy metal overdose. Here, we report the case of a 53-year-old woman who presented with glove-and-stocking paresthesia and scaly plaques following the institution of Ayurvedic drugs containing arsenic for dermatitis. She also had a loss of distal proprioception and a hyperesthetic response to pinprick. Her blood analysis showed elevated arsenic levels; 12 times the acceptable upper limit, with normal lead, cadmium, mercury, and chromium levels. The drug was immediately stopped and there was a gradual but incomplete resolution of the paresthesia and distal weakness over the next several months. The risk of heavy metal toxicity should be briefed to the patient before the start of mineral Ayurvedic drugs. Monitoring serum levels while on these medications might help identify toxicities early and can result in the commencement of therapy at an early stage

ABSTRACT

Skin, the body’s largest organ, protects from deleterious environmental impacts (physical, chemical, microbiological) and is crucial for the maintenance of temperature, electrolyte and fluid balance and tactile sensation, it sets a boundary between the organism and the environment. Any change in the normal skin texture disturb the patient both mentally and physically. Psoriasis is a common, chronic, recurrent inflammatory disease of the skin, characterized by circumscribed, erythematous, dry, scaly plaques of varying sizes. The severity of psoriasis is found to be ever fluctuating. Individuals are likely to cycle between differing levels of severity throughout lifetime. The course of the disease is punctuated by spontaneous flare-ups and remissions. Psoriasis being a chronic and often disfiguring condition, cause a marked impairment in quality of life. There is no certain cure for this disease. Ayurvedic diagnosis is as Vatha-Kapha predominant Mahakushta namely Sidhma kushta. Here an effort to treat a 13-year-old child having plaque psoriasis by Samsodhana and Samsamana therapy. Initially 6 days Virechana was performed and then followed by Samsamana with intermittent Virechana karma. PASI score is used to assess the severity of psoriatic lesions and the patient’s response to treatment. PASI score before the treatment was found to be 15.7 which became 0 at the end of the treatment. This case report showed the treatment modalities done in the patient obtained great result with no recurrence in the last 1.5 years.

ABSTRACT

RTI (Reproductive Tract Infection) is the vital cause of suffering in women and neonates. According to WHO estimation 340 million new cases of curable STI (Sexually Transmitted Disease) other than HIV/AIDS occurs every year, most of which are occurring in developing countries. Genital tract infection is the prime cause of most gynaecological disease. Vaginal candidiasis is the most common cause of Genital tract infection. It (Vaginal candidiasis) is a common condition and up to 75% of all women suffer at least one episode of this infection during their life time. For treating the pathological condition of genital tract, direct application or self application of medicine is very difficult and the residence time of the medicine is less due to self cleansing properties of vaginal canal. Application of the drug in other route may cause systemic adverse reaction. To overcome this arduous situation, in situ thermo-sensitive gel form has great importance. In this article an attempt have been made for the review of the thermo-sensitive vaginal gel and the scholar has gathered the basic knowledge to develop an Ayurvedic formulation Panchavalkal kashaya thermo-sensitive vaginal gel by this review. This work will be done in School of Pharmaceutical Science, Shoolini University, Solan, HP.

ABSTRACT

Poisoning is a major public health concern that is becoming more common by the day. Poison can be consumed directly or indirectly from a variety of sources. Poisoning can now be found in a variety of areas, including junk food with chemical preservatives, various sorts of growing products like rice and wheat, and pesticide-laced veggies. As a result of diverse human behaviours, water, air, and soil have become contaminated, posing a hazard to human health. According to Ayurvedic doctrine, there are several sources of obtaining of toxins i.e., either through animate, inanimate or Kritim(artificial). Such toxins are accumulated without eliminating through the body or remains with being the less potent inside the body for several years generally called Dushi Visha. All the sign and symptoms of Dushi Visha looks like that of chronic poisoning and varies from organs to organs, where it becomes deposited. Such accumulated Visha then vitiates Dosha and that leads to vitiation of different kinds of Dhatus respectively. like, Rakta Dusti, Kitiva, Vrana, Kotha are the major manifestations that will see after prolong exposure to Dushi Visha. The main line of treatment of Dushi Visha is through Detoxification (i.e., Vamana, Virechana, Raktamokshana karma) followed by Dushivisari Agad Paana, that has mentioned by Charak. Classical text book has mentioned different level of clinical manifestations including sign and Symptoms and its complication along and its management with specific Justification.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Opium and its derivative addiction are one of the most prevalent addictions in western Rajasthan, because it is easily available and is being used openly in social programs as the culture of the same. In western Rajasthan, mainly Doda poppy, opium milk, smack, tramadol, etc. are major forms of opium-derived addictions. Withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, chills, body ache, sleeplessness and flu-like symptoms begin, these symptoms can grow severe enough to necessitate emergency medical attention, and in extreme situations, they might have life-threatening consequences for the user as a result of respiration depression, and pupil dilation in the later stages. The assessment was based on Clinical Opiate Withdrawal Scale (cows) before and after the treatment. Intervention: Efforts have been applied to depict 8 cases of opium addiction in form of series who have been treated with Ahiphenmochanadi vati in the dose of 250 mg twice a day and Sameergaja kerari rasa in the tapering method (Padanshika Krama) starting with the dose of 375 mg along with panchakarma procedures, Shirodhara with til tail, Abhayanga, and Swedana with Mahanarayan Tail and Dashmool kwath respectively for a period of 1 month. Reduction in cows scale was observed, about 75-80% of symptoms subsided in all cases and the results have been reported very encouraging within a period of twenty to thirty days. Conclusion: Altogether, multimodal Ayurveda treatment can be an effective and safe solution for smack addictions.

ABSTRACT

Ahara is as old as the history of humanity as the body is originated and subsequently maintained by food. Historically, by the fundamental methods as looking and accumulating and agriculture humans secured their food from nature. As agricultural technologies elevated, humans settled into agriculture existence with diets fashioned through the agriculture possibilities of their geographical environment. Geographic and cultural variations have caused creation of numerous cuisines and culinary arts, which includes a big selection of components, herbs, spices, techniques, and dishes. With engorgement of rapid transferring lifestyles, fashions of assimilation of various subculture and way of life the food become very venerable for life expectancy. In Ayurveda, proper style of partaking food or Ahara has been mentioned by different treatise in a holistic approach. In the present study the holistic measure regarding Ahara is stipulated in five common rights as the Right Quantity, Right Time, Right Quality, Right Method, and Right Place

ABSTRACT

Malachite green (MG) is aquatic pollutant that induces oxidative stress when comes in contact with the living organisms. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, MG produces intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and these ROS disturb redox homeostasis and cellular functions leading to early cell death. Exogenous supply of natural antioxidants containing polyherbal decoction may play a crucial role in re-establishment of redox homeostasis by ensuring the cell survival. Exposure of MG to Saccharomyces cerevisiae resulted in a significant decrease (97.8%) in colony forming units (CFU). An Ayurvedic polyherbal formulation ‘Vayasthapana Rasayana’ (VR) which contains natural antioxidants from plants viz. Terminalia chebula, Clitoria ternatea, Boerhaavia diffusa, Centella asiatica, Phyllanthus emblica, Asparagus racemossus and Tinospora cordifolia at 1.0 mg/mL concentration could arrest the oxidative stress during MG exposure. Levels of ROS elevated up to 67.3% on MG exposure; while VR supplementation reduced it by 54.7%. MG induced cellular apoptosis in 38% and necrosis in 27% cells, while VR augmentation reduced it to 8%. Activities of antioxidant enzymes like catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase in MG exposed cells were induced by 408, 144 and 140%, respectively, whereas, VR supplementation lowered the expressions to 102, 57 and 111%, respectively. Induction in caspases 3/7 activity was also found to be reduced by 65.39% after VR augmentation. Similarly, VR modulated activities of oxido-reductases like lignin peroxidase, laccase, NADH-DCIP reductase and MG reductase. VR supplementation also maintained the MG utilization potential of S. cerevisiae up to 20th exposure cycle which was otherwise arrested to 8th cycle. The treatment also decreased the ROS accumulation and nuclear damage, restoring the cell viability up to 94% and retained normal growth dynamics. Thus, VR supplementation could significantly decrease oxidative stress, enhance cell viability and ultimately protect the dying S. cerevisiae cells during MG exposure.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To evaluate the effect of Shilajit, a medicine of Ayurveda, on the serum changes in cytokines and adipokines caused by non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).@*METHODS@#After establishing fatty liver models by feeding a high-fat diet (HFD) for 12 weeks, 35 Wistar male rats were randomly divided into 5 groups, including control (standard diet), Veh (HFD + vehicle), high-dose Shilajit [H-Sh, HFD + 250 mg/(kg·d) Shilajit], low-dose Shilajit [L-Sh, HFD + 150 mg/(kg·d) Shilajit], and pioglitazone [HFD + 10 mg/(kg·d) pioglitazone] groups, 7 rats in each group. After 2-week of gavage administration, serum levels of glucose, insulin, interleukin 1beta (IL-1β), IL-6, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), adiponectin, and resistin were measured, and insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) was calculated.@*RESULTS@#After NAFLD induction, the serum level of IL-10 significantly increased and serum IL-1β, TNF-α levels significantly decreased by injection of both doses of Shilajit and pioglitazone (P<0.05). Increases in serum glucose level and homeostasis model of HOMA-IR were reduced by L-Sh and H-Sh treatment in NAFLD rats (P<0.05). Both doses of Shilajit increased adiponectin and decreased serum resistin levels (P<0.05).@*CONCLUSION@#The probable protective role of Shilajit in NAFLD model rats may be via modulating the serum levels of IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-10, adipokine and resistin, and reducing of HOMA-IR.
