ABSTRACT
This study aimed to develop an instrument to identify behavioural patterns based on real everyday situations related to the Brazilian Jeitinho, which maps decisionmaking in different social contexts. Two studies were developed to explore the phenomenon. In study 1, the construction of an ipsative measurement scale (forced-choice) is described, composed of 11 daily stories about real situations and outcomes that require decisionmaking. In study 2, the instrument developed was tested in a sample of 480 participants. Confirmatory multidimensional scaling was carried and showed a two-dimensional model with 2 polarized dimensions: (1) positive-negative orientation (assertive/malandro or rascal) (malandro is like slippery and naughty people) and (2) passive-active disposition (negligent/creative). The operationalization of an ipsative measure demonstrated a functional option as an alternative to the Likert-type scale, enabling psychological measurement for inter-individual comparison. The study, therefore, provides a complementary empirical tool in a specific perspective for everyday behaviours from the perspective of the Brazilian Jeitinho

ABSTRACT
Forced-choice tests are widely used in order to reduce the impact of different response set biases typically associated to psychological tests (e.g. acquiescence or social desirability). However, these tests produce ipsative data which have undesirable properties, thereby making an inappropriate application of classical factor analysis techniques for psychometric evaluation commonly used by researchers. This paper explains the analytical properties of forced-choice tests, along with an example that illustrates how these properties have an impact on the application of conventional statistical techniques and produce improper results. Additionally, one of the current proposals is presented in order to analyze these data based on the comparative judgment model by Thurstone, along with the results of a simulation study which illustrates its implementation and effectiveness in recovering the original factor structure.
ABSTRACT
Previous assessment of verticality by means of rod and rod and frame tests indicated that human subjects can be more (field dependent) or less (field independent) influenced by a frame placed around a tilted rod. In the present study we propose a new approach to these tests. The judgment of visual verticality (rod test) was evaluated in 50 young subjects (28 males, ranging in age from 20 to 27 years) by randomly projecting a luminous rod tilted between -18 and +18° (negative values indicating left tilts) onto a tangent screen. In the rod and frame test the rod was displayed within a luminous fixed frame tilted at +18 or -18°. Subjects were instructed to verbally indicate the rod’s inclination direction (forced choice). Visual dependency was estimated by means of a Visual Index calculated from rod and rod and frame test values. Based on this index, volunteers were classified as field dependent, intermediate and field independent. A fourth category was created within the field-independent subjects for whom the amount of correct guesses in the rod and frame test exceeded that of the rod test, thus indicating improved performance when a surrounding frame was present. In conclusion, the combined use of subjective visual vertical and the rod and frame test provides a specific and reliable form of evaluation of verticality in healthy subjects and might be of use to probe changes in brain function after central or peripheral lesions.

Objective To examine the dissimulation in memory test by event-related potentials (ERP).Methods Recording the ERP of 20 students in the choosing tasks according to Binomial Forced-Choice Digit Memory Test (BFMDT) in three situations including reality, dissimulation and forced wrong choose. Results The reaction time was lengthened gradually by the situation of reality ( 681 ± 21 ) ms, dissimulation ( 741 ± 25 ) ms and forced wrong choose( 946 ± 31 ) ms (F= 115.73, P = 0.000). The main components in ERP waveforms, N2 ( 180 ~184 ms) and P2 ( 214 ~ 243 ms) had higher amplitudes in situations of dissimulation and forced wrong choose than that of reality. The amplitude of N2 showed significant difference in three groups(F=6. 896, P<0.01 ). The amplitudes were increased gradually by the situation with reality( -0.376 ± 0.58 )μV, dissimulation( 0. 86 ± 0.71 )μV and forced wrong choose( 1.77 ±0.82)μV. Conclusion ERP may be an electrophysiological index of the intention of dissimulation in memory test.
ABSTRACT
The aim of this work was to compare contrast sensitivity curves for radial (rCSF) and sine-wave gratings (CSF) stimuli of 0.25, 0.5, 1 and 2 cpd in 6 to 13 year-old-children. It was measured the contrast thresholds of 40 children using the psychophysical forced-choice method and low luminance levels. All children were free of identifiable ocular diseases and had normal acuity. The results showed that contrast sensitivity of the children was higher for spatial frequencies (CSF) than radial frequencies (rCSF). The results suggest that these stimuli can be processed by different visual cortical areas.

The sunk costs effect is defined as the tendency to persist in an endeavoronce an investment has been made. This project evaluated whether this effect occurs after making a behavioral investment and if forced and freeresponses have similar effects upon subsequent behavioral persistence. Subjects, 90 students, divided in three groups, were exposed to three conditions of 0, 60 and 110 forced responses in FR 350 schedules. Persistence increased as free responses increased, suggesting that the sunk cost effect is produced by a freely chosen behavioral investment. It was concluded that the sunk cost effect is produced by a behavioral investment and that happens only if each instance of investment is freely chosen.

The aim of this work was to measure and compare mesopic contrast sensitivity curves for radial (rCSF) and sine-wave gratings (CSF) stimuli of 0.25, 0.5, 1 and 2 cpd in deaf children between the ages of 7 to 12 years. We measured the contrast thresholds of 10 children using the psychophysical forced-choice method and mean luminance of 0.7 cd/m2. All participants were free of ocular diseases and had normal acuity. The results showed that contrast sensitivity of the deaf children was higher for sine-wave gratings (CSF) than radial stimuli (rCSF). These results suggest that these two stimuli can be processed by different visual cortical areas.

The aim of this work was to measure contrast sensitivity curves in 10 hearing children and 10 children with prelingual deafness (from 7 to 12 years old), using concentric circular patterns with radial frequencies (rCSF) of 0.25-2.0 cpd at low levels of luminance (0.7 cd/m²). All participants were free from identifiable ocular disease and had normal visual acuity. The rCSF was measured with the psychophysical forced-choice method. The results showed maximum sensitivity in the frequency range of 0.25 cpd for the two groups. The results showed yet significant differences between the rCSF of deaf and hearing children. That is, hearing children needed less contrast than deaf children to detect radial frequencies. These results suggest that at low levels of luminance the rCSF of hearing children was better than the rCSF of children with prelingual deafness.

The aim of this work was to measure contrast sensitivity for radial frequencies (rCSF) in the range between 0.25-2 cpd in children (4 to 7 years of age) and young adults. Contrast thresholds were estimated for 25 participants (twenty children and five adults) using the psychophysical forced-choice method at low luminance levels. All the cts participants had normal acuity. The results showed that the curves (rCSF) of the 4, 5, 6 and 7 years old improved significantly with age. The results also showed that the rCSF for 7 year old children was lower than in young adults. These results suggest that the development of contrast sensitivity for radial stimuli increases gradually even after turning 7 years old.
