ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To analyze the association between different growth patterns and metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents aged 7 to 17 years, and to provide suggestions for the prevention and control of metabolic syndrome in Chinese children and adolescents.@*METHODS@#Data were collected from the research project "Development and Application of Technology and Related Standards for Prevention and Control of Major Diseases among Students" of public health industry in 2012. This project is a cross-sectional study design. A total of 65 347 students from 93 primary and secondary schools in 7 provinces including Guangdong were selected by stratified cluster random sampling method. Given the budget, 25% of the students were randomly selected to collect blood samples. In this study, 10 176 primary and middle school students aged 7 to 17 years with complete physical measurements and blood biochemical indicators were selected as research objects. Chi-square test was used to compare the distribution differences of growth patterns under different demographic characteristics. Birth weight, waist circumference and blood biochemical indexes were expressed in the form of mean ± standard deviation, and the differences among different groups were compared by variance analysis. Binary Logistic regression model was used to analyze the relationship between different growth patterns and metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents aged 7 to 17 years.@*RESULTS@#The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents was 6.56%, 7.18% in boys and 5.97% in girls. The risk of metabolic syndrome was higher in the catch-down growth group than in the normal growth group (OR=1.417, 95%CI: 1.19-1.69), and lower in the catch-up growth group(OR=0.66, 95%CI: 0.53-0.82). After adjusting for gender, age and so on, the risk of developing metabolic syndrome in the catch-down growth group was higher than that in the normal growth group (OR=1.25, 95%CI: 1.02-1.52), but there was no significant difference between the catch-up growth group and the normal growth group (OR=0.79, 95%CI: 0.62-1.01). Stratified analysis showed that the association between different growth patterns and metabolic syndrome was statistically significant in the 7-12 years group, urban population, and Han Chinese student population.@*CONCLUSION@#There is a correlation between different growth patterns and metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents. The risk of developing metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents with catch-down growth is higher than that in the normal growth group, which suggests that attention should be paid to the growth and development of children and adolescents, timely correction of delayed growth and prevention of adverse health outcomes.

ABSTRACT

The histopathological growth pattern (HGP) of colorectal cancer liver metastasis (CRLM) is correlated with the prognosis of patients. Patients with desmoplastic HGP have a better prognosis. The latest international scoring guidelines have modified the cut-off value of HGP, and divides it into two types: complete desmoplastic HGP and incomplete desmoplastic HGP. However, the relationship between the HGPs and the treatment response to systemic treatment is still unclear. It is necessary to develop non-invasive methods to evaluate changes in HGP during treatment in the future. This paper reviews the new scoring consensus and clinical applications of HGP in CRLM.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To determine the relationship between postnatal foot lengths and estimated gestational age (EGA) in relation to intrauterine growth patterns determined at birth among Nigerian neonates. Design: Hospital-based, cross-sectional. Setting: Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, Nigeria. Participants: 260 neonates with EGA 30- 42 weeks within 48 hours of life. Interventions: Postnatal foot lengths (FL) were measured with Vernier digital calliper in millimetres. The intra-uterine growth pattern was determined using the Lubchenco chart. Pearson correlation and regression analysis tests were performed. Main outcome measures: Postnatal foot length in relation to Intra-Uterine Growth Pattern. Results: The mean postnatal FL had a strong positive correlation with the EGA from 30 through 42 weeks (r = 0.855, p < 0.001). The overall mean foot length for preterm neonates was 65.44 (6.92) mm, while that of term neonates was 77.92 (4.24) mm. The linear regression equation was generated as: EGA = 9.43 + (0.37 × FL), p < 0.001. The EGA as measured by FL had the highest positive correlation with Small for Gestational Age (SGA) intra-uterine-growth pattern, followed by Appropriate for Gestational Age (AGA) and least by Large for Gestational Age (LGA) respectively (r = 0.936> 0.861 > 0.666). Conclusion: The postnatal foot length correlated well with estimated gestational age, and the correlation was best among SGA infants

ABSTRACT

Abstract This work was carried out in order to provide the length-weight relationship (LWR) and the allometric condition factor (Ka), as well as its correlation with limnological variables, for Prochilodus lineatus from the middle Tietê River basin. Fish were collected using gill nets in two rivers with contrasting environmental conditions, totaling 46 specimens in the highly polluted Tietê River, and 37 in the Peixe River, a relatively well-conserved tributary. Environmental measures were obtained concomitantly to the fish capture. The results showed an isometric growth (b = 3.00) for the fish from Tietê River and a positive allometric growth (b = 3.23) for the fish from Peixe River. The mean value of Ka was unexpectedly higher for the main river (Ka = 2.63) when compared to its tributary (Ka = 2.42), being statistically different from each other. This can be explained by the much higher availability of organic sediments in the main river, resulting from a long-term eutrophication process. Nevertheless, the positive and statistically significant correlations with dissolved oxygen, for both rivers, as well as significant negative correlations with electric conductivity, nitrogen and chlorophyll a for Tietê River, indicate the negative effects of the water quality deterioration on the fish condition factor. The work contributes to the expansion of knowledge about P. lineatus, the most important commercial fish of the middle Tietê River basin, which is severely impacted by unsustainable human actions.

ABSTRACT

Length and weight data are useful in fisheries management and standard results of fish monitoring programs. Length-weight relationship (LWR) is used for estimating the weight corresponding to a given length, and the condition factor is used to compare the body condition, fatness or health of fish populations. This study aimed to estimate the LWR and the condition factor for 12 freshwater fish species from the Igarapé Fortaleza basin, a tributary of the Amazonas River system in the State of Amapá, eastern Amazon (Brazil). The coefficient of determination, the allometric condition factor and the allometric coefficient varied among species, and were compared with populations elsewhere. In 83.3% of the species, the allometric coefficient remained within the expected range. This was the first record of LWR parameters for Acestrorhynchus falcirostris. (AU)

ABSTRACT

@#Functional orthodontics is one of the most important methods in the treatment of skeletal class II malocclusion in adolescents. A deep understanding of the many factors affecting the effect of functional orthopedics can improve the efficiency of correction and achieve good results. In this paper, from the two aspects of patients and appliances, we analyzed the factors that affect the curative effect of class II malocclusion functional orthopedics and deeply analyzed the therapeutic mechanism of functional appliances to guide clinical treatment. The results of the literature review show that the peak period of growth and development is the best period for the treatment of skeletal Class II malocclusion. For patients with a vertical growth type, it is recommended to use a high head cap traction appliance to prevent the lower jaw from rotating backward and downward, and functional appliances such as titanium plates or implant nail-assisted anchorage can effectively reduce the lip inclination of the lower anterior teeth. In addition, compared with the traditional functional appliance, digital and personalized transparent braces are not only more aesthetically pleasing, comfortable and beneficial to periodontal health but also have many orthopedic appliances advantages, such as two-stage fusion, better incisor torque and vertical control of the posterior teeth, and can solve the problems of anterior interference and lateral deficiency while leading. With the development of digital orthodontics, transparent appliances have become an important developmental direction for functional appliances, but there are few related studies, and more clinical studies are needed to confirm their efficacy.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The third molar (3M) varies more than other molars in terms of shape, size, timing of eruption, and tendencytoward impaction. Hence, studies need to be carried out to clarify the association of the various patterns of facial growth withmandibular 3M impaction.Purpose: The purpose of this study is to relate the level of impaction of mandibular 3Ms and their inclinations to various patternsof facial growth among Indian patients.Materials and Methods: A total of 207 lateral cephalograms and optic pathway gliomas (OPGs) of patients were obtainedfrom NISSAN Radiological and Diagnostic Centre. The OPGs were analyzed by a single examiner as per: (1) Angulations(using Quek’s analysis - beta angle, 2003). (2) Depth of 3Ms. The lateral cephalograms were assessed by a single examinerusing: (1) Down’s analysis. (2) Beta angle. (3)Jarabak’s ratio. (4) Bjork’s analysis. The subjects were further classified into skeletal Class I, II, and III as well as into horizontal, vertical, and normal growth patterns. The final study data were subjected to a Pearson correlation test to check the association between the 3M impactions andvarious angles. The values found significant were coded into ordinate data and Kendall’s Tau-B Test was done. Results: Statistically, significant correlation was found between depth of impacted mandibular 3Ms and facial angle, Y-axis,cant of occlusion, angle of convexity, and gonial angle. Conclusion: Greater incidence of 3Ms was found to be at position B and C in Class II patients as compared to Class I and IIIpatients. Furthermore, patients showing vertical growth pattern were found to have increased percentage of mandibular 3Mimpactions.

ABSTRACT

A field study of the sex ratio, length-weight ratio, body size at first gonadal maturation, and the breeding season of the red-tailed catfish, Phractocephalus hemioliopterus, was carried out in the region of the middle Xingu River in the eastern Amazon basin. The fish were sampled quarterly from September 2012 to January 2014 using gillnets and long lines. The sex ratio was balanced, and while males and females were similar in standard length, the females were heavier than the males, on average. The males presented negative allometric growth, and the females, isometric growth. The estimated size at first maturity was 77.8 cm. The variation in the gonadosomatic index and the greater frequencies of mature specimens indicated a reproductive peak at the beginning of the high-water (flood) period. As P. hemioliopterus is an important commercial fish, our findings will contribute to the future development of effective conservation and management strategies, such as minimum catch size and a close season that is appropriate for the region. These data will also provide important insights for the evaluation of potential impacts on the biology of this fish resulting from the construction of Belo Monte dam.(AU)

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Patients with resectable colorectal lung oligometastasis (CLOM) demonstrate a heterogeneous oncological outcome. However, the parameters for predicting tumor aggressiveness have not yet been fully investigated in CLOM. This study was performed to determine the prognostic value of histological growth patterns in patients who underwent surgery for CLOM. METHODS: The study included 92 patients who were diagnosed with CLOM among the first resection cases. CLOMs grow according to three histological patterns: aerogenous, pushing, and desmoplastic patterns. The growth patterns were evaluated on archival hematoxylin and eosin–stained tissue sections. RESULTS: The aerogenous pattern was found in 29.4% (n=27) of patients, the pushing pattern in 34.7% (n=32), the desmoplastic pattern in 6.5% (n=6), and a mix of two growth patterns in 29.4% (n=27). The size of the aerogenous pattern was significantly smaller than that of metastases with other patterns (p=.033). Kaplan-Meier analysis demonstrated that patients showing an aerogenous pattern appeared to have a poorer prognosis, which was calculated from the time of diagnosis of the CLOM (p=.044). The 5-year survival rate from the diagnosis of colorectal cancer tended to be lower in patients with an aerogenous pattern than in those who had a non-aerogenous pattern; however, the difference was marginally significant (p=.051). In the multivariate Cox analysis, the aerogenous pattern appeared as an independent predictor of poor overall survival (hazard ratio, 3.122; 95% confidence interval, 1.196 to 8.145; p=.020). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that the growth patterns may play a part as a histology-based prognostic parameter for patients with CLOM.

ABSTRACT

Studies on the length-weight relationship (LWR) of fishes are an important tool to describe several biological aspects of the species. Consequently, these studies are relevant due the necessity of comprehension about fish life cycle. Thus, this study aimed to establish the length-weight relationship of the ten most common fish in the Lower Nhamundá River, left tributary of the Amazon River. The capture of fish was conducted in January 2008 using gill nets. A total of 807 individuals, ten species and three Orders (Characiformes, Siluriformes and Clupeiformes) were analyzed. The parameter b varied from 2.680 to 3.698. The LWR were shown for the first time for two species: Anostomoides laticeps and Ageneiosus polystictus. Finally, this research emphasizes the importance of LWR studies in the Amazon and the use of primary data for fisheries management plans.

ABSTRACT

Nearly half a century,an increasing number of studies have found that the puberty of human being is at early trends.Puberty is the process of physical changes involving reproductive system maturation and the acquisition of fertility,by the combination effects of nervous system, endocrine system and the environment.Pubertal timing is a relative concept and the process of pubertal development can be shown as early, timely or relatively late as compared with a reference group. This article mainly focuses on related influencing factors of pubertal timing including genetic factor, childhood obesity, growth pattern (intrauterine growth retardation, catchup growth, adiposity rebound),psychosocial stress (poor family emotional environment, father absence, international adoption),environmental endocrine disrupting chemicals with their mechanism and significance. The exploration of relevant risk factors of early puberty can provide scientific evidence for formulating relevant policies and targeted prevention.

ABSTRACT

To tackle a large midline diastema and generalized spacing existing before extraction often poses a challenge to the treating prosthodontist. The situation becomes even more complicated if the patient is a teenager, with multiple missing teeth, associated deep bite and where the jaw bone growth has not yet been completed. Possible treatment options would include a removable prosthesis, a fixed partial denture or an implant supported prosthesis. Treating such cases with a simple removable prosthesis cannot be justified if a deep bite existed which would result in posterior disocclusion. Also a conventional fixed partial denture or closure of the diastema with light cure composite (LCC), would result in a seemingly large tooth, which would be unaesthetic in appearance. Implant supported prosthesis is a possibility, if the patient’s jaw bone growth has been completed. Another simple non-invasive solution to this problem would be to fabricate a non-rigid connector using loops. This presentation describes the procedure for fabrication of an interim loop connector for a 16 year old female patient who had lost one of her maxillary central incisors as a result of trauma. Patient also had multiple spacing in the maxillary anterior teeth and an associated deep bite. Her cephalogram revealed that she had a Class III skeletal pattern. A permanent treatment at this stage was not possible due to ontoward mandibular growth pattern as revealed on the cephalogram. Hence to dodge all these problems, a simple and non-invasive treatment using loop connectors was chosen till the growth period was completed.

ABSTRACT

Summary Background: non-linear mathematical models, empirically developed by plotting body weight against age, are used to describe the growth curve in different animals. Objective: to describe the growth pattern in Guilan sheep using non-linear models. Methods: six non-linear mathematical equations (Brody, Negative exponential, Logistic, Gompertz, von Bertalanffy and Richards) were used to describe the growth curves in Guilan sheep. The Agricultural Organization of Guilan province (Rasht, Iran) provided the dataset used in this study. The dataset included 42,257 weight records of lambs from birth to 240 days of age during years 1994 to 2014. Each model was separately fitted to body weight records of all lambs, males and females, using the NLIN and MODEL procedures of SAS. The models were tested for goodness of fit using adjusted coefficient of determination, root means square error (RMSE), Durbin-Watson statistic, akaike's information criterion (AIC) and bayesian information criterion (BIC). Results: the Richards model provided the best fit to the growth curve in females and all lambs, with the lowest RMSE, AIC, and BIC values compared to the other models. The Brody model provided the best fit of growth in male lambs due to the lower values of AIC and BIC compared to the other models. The negative exponential model provided the worst fit of growth for males, females and all lambs. Conclusion: the evaluation of the growth equations used in this study indicates the potential of non-linear functions for fitting body weight records of Guilan sheep.

ABSTRACT

Relationship between length and weight (LWR) is used to describe aspects concerning the life cycle of fish, but does not considers possible changes during the lifetime mainly due to the sexual maturation. Thus, this study aims to identify the size at first maturity of Auchenipterichthys longimanus (Siluriformes: Auchenipteridae) and infer if the reproductive engagement could change growth pattern, concerning the LWR. Estimates of the size at first maturity (L 50 ) were made by visual identification of gonadal development and through the gonadosomatic index (G SI ). L 50 was estimated as 12.5 cm for males and 13.0 cm for females when applied visual identification of gonads development. L 50 estimates increased to 13.05 cm for males and 13.7 cm for females when estimated from G SI values. LWR was adjusted by using a regular power function and through the polyphasic growth model, with proportionality and allometric coefficients changing in a two phases. The results indicate differences in the growth pattern concerning males and females, as well as polyphasic growth. The change in the growth pattern of the polyphasic LWR was estimated at 11.42 cm for males and 12.53 cm for females, suggesting that changes in the growth pattern can sign-out the attainment maturity in this catfish.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the natural history and growth pattern of hepatic hemangioma in adults. Methods From April 2010 to March 2013, adult patients with hepatic hemangioma who had no prior treatment were enrolled.A routine follow-up was performed to observe the natural history and complications of these lesions. Results 236 patients were enrolled in the study. The median size of the hemangiomas was 4.5 cm (range 0.6 ~ 19.2 cm).During a median follow-up of 48 months (range 3 ~ 266 months), the hemangiomas increased in size in 61.0% of patients, remained stable in size in 23.7%, decreased in size in 8.5%.The peak growth period was in patients < 30 years age (0.46 ± 0.41 cm/year) and the growth rate decreased significantly after 50 years of age (0.21 ±0.40 cm/year).Hemangiomas with a size <2.0 cm had the lowest growth rate (0.16 ± 0.42 cm/year).The peak growth rate was in hemangiomas 8.0 ~ 10.0 cm (0.80 ± 0.62 cm/year) , but for hemangiomas > 10.0 cm, the growth rate was only (0.47 ±0.91)cm per year.Only 9 patients had severe symptoms caused by the hemangioma. No patients presented with hemangioma-related complications. Conclusions The majority of hepatic hemangiomas have the tendency to increase in size but they rarely caused complications. All the hemangiomas could be safely managed by observation, and surgery should only be considered in patients with complications.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the structure and growth pattern of the biomass, root number, and age class of Asarum sieboldii f seoulense. METHODS: A large sample, random sampling investigation and determination method were used. RESULTS: The biomass and root number of Asarum sieboldii f seoulense were correlated with the growth speed; the correlation coefficient was high. There existed allometric relationship between the age class and the number of roots of Asarum sieboldii f. seoulense; the age class and biomass had allometric relationship. CONCLUSION: The increase of the biomass of Asarum sieboldii f. seoulense depends on the root number; with the increase of the age class, the biomass and root number of Asarum sieboldii f seoulense increase, but the relative growth speeds are not equal.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the growth pattern of rural Tibetan children in the first year after birth. Methods In rural area of Lhasa,Tibet,252 subjects were recruited and their weight, length were measured longitudinally from birth to 12th months of age.Frequency of monitoring reached 5 times in total and Ponderal index (PI) was calculated for each visit.Mixed model was used to analyze the changes of length and weight by gender after controlling for birth weight. Results Birth weight and length showed great influence on children' s growth (weight:β =-0.681 9,P<0.000 1,length:β =-0.957 1,P<0.000 1).Weight and length of Tibetan male infants at each age point were lower than WHO new standard on growth and the Reference from 2005 National Survey on growth of children in China. The gap seemed widened by time but the gap between Tibetan female infants and Chinese standard narrowed 6 months after birth.Data showed that the higher PI of Tibetan infants than that of other Chinese infants which might infer that Tibetan infants had a more solid body mass under their own height. Conclusion The growth pattern of Tibetan infants might have its own feature.Tibetan infants appeared to have had higher PI,which was contradictory to the general conclusion that poor growth and development status had been seen in Tibetan children.

ABSTRACT

Background: While prenatal and postnatal growth of the foot has been documented several years ago, longitudinal growth of the first metatarsal has not been previously evaluated. The aim of the study is to determine the postnatal longitudinal growth pattern of this bone and compare it with the foot and lower limb long bones. Methods: Through a computerized image search, we identified patients <18 years old with radiographs reported as “normal” by the radiologist. A sample of 886 patients was divided into 18 groups according to age (0-11 months, 1 year, 2 years, etc.) and sex. Analysis was performed using Kodak Carestream imaging software PACS. Results: The average length in the first group was 19.91 mm (3.20, 15.22-25.62). The average length in the last group was 66.13 mm (5.33, 52.50-77.18). Annual growth rate was 2.71 mm. The average age at the time of physeal closure was 14.85 years (± 1.64) for boys and 14.77 years (± 3.63) for girls. Conclusion: Longitudinal growth of the first metatarsal mimics the growth of foot but not that of the long bones of the lower limb. Growth curves described in this article can be applied to conditions that affect foot development or require corrective surgery on the first metatarsal, as well as a standard reference in future studies.
