ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the use of new media technology to estimate the size of the online MSM population in Pudong New Area, to understand the frequency of new media software use, HIV testing and high-risk behavior, and to provide a basis for AIDS prevention and control. Methods The online MSM registration information in Pudong New Area was collected through a gay dating APP. At five time points on March 28 and April 11, 2019, MSM who logged into the gay dating APP were counted. The MSM were confirmed by comparing the login name and registration information. The capture-recapture (C-R) method was used to calculate the MSM population size. Meanwhile, a questionnaire survey was conducted on the online MSM. Results The MSM population size in Pudong New Area was estimated at 13 174 [95% CI: 9,672~16,676] through the C-R method. The proportion of multiple sexual partners accounted for 72.5%. According to the ordered multi-classification logistics analysis, age, education level, experience of attending a talk on AIDS, and experience of receiving AIDS publicity and education in the VCT clinic were the influencing factors of AIDS awareness. Conclusion New media technology provided new technical means for estimating the size of MSM population. The MSM population’s awareness of AIDS risk and prevention still needs to be strengthened. It is worthy of further studies on the role of new media technology in AIDS prevention and health education in the future.

ABSTRACT

Background: Sexual behavior is an important determinant of sexually transmitted diseases transmission. It is essential to understand the HIV-related high-risk behavior among high-risk groups like migrants to design evidence-based intervention. Objectives: This study was undertaken to assess HIV-related high-risk behavior and awareness among male construction workers. Materials and Methods: A total of 404 male workers were enrolled in a cross-sectional study at a construction area in Karnataka. Behavioral Surveillance Survey questionnaire was used to collect information regarding sexual behavior and their knowledge regarding HIV/AIDS. Results: The mean age of workers was 25.6 ± 7.3 years. Among workers, 82.2% of them heard about AIDS and 66.8% (270) could tell at least two correct mode of transmission of HIV. Mean age of first sexual intercourse was 22 ± 9.4 years among married and 18.9 ± 2.8 years among unmarried. Nearly 25% and 56% had their first sexual intercourse <18 years among married and unmarried, respectively. Among married workers, 21.9% used condoms during last sexual intercourse with spouse and 10.8% used condoms with other partners. About 15.7% of them had multiple sexual partners. Among unmarried workers, 27.9% of them ever had sex and 22.2% of them used condom during last sexual intercourse. Nearly 30% of them had multiple sexual partners. Higher age, educational status, and high-income associated with better awareness. Conclusion: Knowledge regarding AIDS and sexual transmission was good. However, condom usage was found to be poor among the workers. In addition to that, multiple sexual partners which included commercial sex workers among both married and unmarried workers are an important risk factor for HIV. Adequate interventions should be done in this group to address this issue.

ABSTRACT

Objective To understand the major high risk behaviors and related factors among reported HIV/AIDS cases aged ≥60 years in some areas of Henan province. Methods In Dengzhou,Xunxian county of Hebi and Xiangcheng county of Xuchang, where the reported number and proportion of HIV/AIDS cases aged ≥60 years were high,a face to face interview was conducted among the cases aged ≥60 years during July-August in 2016.The information about the high risk behaviors before HIV infection confirmation were collected by using a semi-structured questionnaire. Results A total of 33 HIV/AIDS cases aged ≥60 years were interviewed, including 28 males and 5 females.Their average age was 67.4 years. The infection route was sexual contact. The main findings revealed that the main factor for HIV infection in elder males was commercial heterosexual behavior with local female sex workers. The condom use rate was low.The poor awareness of the knowledge about AIDS prevention could explain why the elderly could not recognize the risk of HIV infection. There were also homosexual and bisexual behaviors in elder male HIV/AIDS patients.Late detection of HIV transmission among couples was the main cause of HIV infection in elder women. Conclusions The major epidemiological related factors for HIV infection in the elderly in some areas of Henan were unsafe sex behavior and the poor awareness of knowledge about AIDS prevention.A targeted strategy should be taken to control the spread of HIV in the elderly.
