ABSTRACT

n the landscape of health, the human body, in its natural state, reveals itself as an intricate unity, operating harmoniously to maintain dynamic balance. However, this homeostasis can be disrupted, leading to duality and disturbances that compromise vital stability. This article reflects on the homeopathic perspective, highlighting its unique approach compared to conventional medicine. Distinguishing itself by treating the individual as an integrated whole, homeopathy recognizes the transience of duality represented by diseases and emphasizes the importance of harmony between body and mind in the pursuit of homeostasis.Inspired by Hahnemann's ideas, homeopathy stands out for its holistic view, rejecting strict dualism and proposing interventions that go beyond symptom suppression. Anchored in the Law of Similars, it seeks substances that would reproduce the patient's symptoms in a healthy state, aiming for a profound cure and the restoration of the dynamic unity of the organism. Despite challenges, such as resistance and a lack of universally accepted research methods, homeopathy persists globally, suggesting unique value. This article encourages reflection on the homeopathic approach, emphasizing

ABSTRACT

ObjectiveTo investigate the effects of Guizhi Jia Longgu Mulitang on the expression difference of interleukin-10 (IL-10) and tumor necrosis factor -α (TNF-α) in related organs of insomnia rats with sensory dysfunction dominated by lung and study the mechanism of Guizhi Jia Longgu Mulitang in improving insomnia. MethodSD rats were randomly divided into the blank group, model group, western medicine group, and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) group, with 10 rats in each group. The rats were deprived of sleep by shallow water environment method in a long platform, and the modeling lasted for 42 d. The blank group and model group were given 0.05 mL·kg-1 normal saline by gavage, and the western medicine group and TCM group were given drugs during modeling. To be specific, the western medicine group was given 0.105 mg·kg-1 dexzopiclone tablet by gavage, while the TCM group was given 7 600 mg·kg-1 Guizhi Jia Longgu Mulitang by gavage, both lasting for 28 days. After successful modeling, the Morris water maze experiment was performed on the 42nd day to detect the motion and spatial memory ability of rats. The levels of IL-10 and TNF-α in serum were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The protein expression of IL-10 and TNF-α in the lung and brain tissue of rats was detected by Western blot. The levels of IL-10 and TNF-α in the lung and brain tissue of rats were detected by immunohistochemistry. ResultCompared with the blank group, the sleep stages non-rapid eye movement ( NREM ) and rapid eye movement ( REM ) of the model group were significantly shortened (P<0.5, P<0.01), and the wake stage was significantly increased (P<0.01). The total time and distance of platform exploration were significantly increased (P<0.01). In the target quadrant (the third quadrant), the percentage of exploration time and the times of crossing the platform were significantly decreased (P<0.01). ELISA results showed that the serum IL-10 level was significantly decreased (P<0.01), and TNF-α level was significantly increased (P<0.01). The results of Western blot showed that the protein expression of IL-10 in brain and lung tissue of rats was significantly decreased (P<0.01), and the protein expression of TNF-α was significantly increased (P<0.01). The results of immunohistochemistry showed that the expression of IL-10 in the brain and lung tissue of rats was significantly decreased (P<0.01), and that of TNF-α was significantly increased (P<0.01). Compared with the model group, the NREM stage and REM stage of the western medicine group and the TCM group were significantly increased (P<0.5, P<0.01), and the wake stage was shortened (P<0.5). The total time and distance of platform exploration were significantly decreased (P<0.01). In the target quadrant (the third quadrant), the percentage of exploration time and the times of crossing the platform were significantly increased (P<0.05, P<0.01). The serum IL-10 level was significantly increased (P<0.01), and the serum TNF-α level was significantly decreased according to the ELISA results (P<0.01). The results of Western blot showed that the protein expression of IL-10 in brain tissue and lung tissue was significantly increased (P<0.01), and the protein expression of TNF-α was significantly decreased (P<0.01). The results of immunohistochemistry showed that the expression of IL-10 in brain tissue and lung tissue was significantly increased (P<0.05, P<0.01), and the expression of TNF-α was significantly decreased (P<0.05, P<0.01). ConclusionGuizhi Jia Longgu Mulitang can improve the expression of IL-10 and TNF-α in brain and lung tissue of insomnia rats with sensory dysfunction dominated by lung, prolong sleep time, and then improve insomnia. The mechanism may be related to improving the expression level of inflammatory factors.

ABSTRACT

This article systematically described the background of the construction of Professor ZHANG Yonghua's theory of emotion-mind pattern identification, the theoretical basis and the ideas of pattern identification and treatment, and its application. The theory is guided by the concept of the unity of body and spirit, focusing on individual endowment and the characteristics of the seven emotions and five minds of the individual, especially the "vexation, constraint, consideration, frightening and sorrow" emotional symptoms, and adherence to the three core disease mechanism "qi, phlegm, fire", then prescribed based on the patterns, which is suitable for treatment of emotion-mind diseases and related symptoms. For those with "fire" as the main disease mechanism, identify the manifestation of their emotion and mind: patients with impatience, violent rage mostly belong to excess fire, treated with Zhizi Chi Decoction (栀子豉汤), Longdan Xiegan Decoction (龙胆泻肝汤); patients with vexation, easy to anger, mostly belong to deficiency fire, treated with Huanglian Ejiao Decoction (黄连阿胶汤); patients with vexation, constraint anger, mostly belong to constraint fire, treated with Danzhi Xiaoyao Powder (丹栀逍遥散), Qinlian Wendan Decoction (芩连温胆汤); patients with overjoy, usually due to exuberance of heart fire, or phlegm clouding the pericardium, treated with Wendan Decoction (温胆汤), or Diankuang Mengxing Decoction (癫狂梦醒汤). For those with "phlegm" as the main disease mechanism, accompanied by excessive consideration and thinking, treated with Wendan Decoction. For those with "qi" as the main disease mechanism, Ganmai Dazao Decoction (甘麦大枣汤) is the main treatment for shorter duration of disease, while Banxia Houpo Decoction (半夏厚朴汤) is the main treatment for longer duration of disease.

ABSTRACT

This paper summarized Professor HAN Mingxiang's clinical experience in treating insomnia in the elderly based on the theory of “deficiency leading to stasis”. It is believed that the core pathogenesis of insomnia in the elderly lies in the weakness of the zang-fu (脏腑) organs and the obstruction of the heart vessel. He advocates the basic treatment principles of supplementing deficiency and dispelling stasis, calming the heart and mind. For insomnia in the elderly with a pattern of heart-spleen deficiency, modified Buyang Huanwu Decoction (补阳还五汤) and Guipi Decoction (归脾汤) could be prescribed to tonify qi, nourish blood, and calm the heart and spirit. For pattern of liver-kidney yin deficiency, modified Qiju Dihuang Decoction (杞菊地黄汤) and Suanzaoren Decoction (酸枣仁汤) could be prescribed to nourish yin, clear heat, cool blood, and tranquilize mind. For pattern of kidney yang deficiency, modified Yougui Pill (右归丸) and Taohong Siwu Decoction (桃红四物汤) could be prescribed to warm yang, dispel cold, eliminate stagnation, and tranquilize the spirit. For pattern of phlegm-dampness stagnation, Xuefu Zhuyu Decoction (血府逐瘀汤) and Wendan Decoction (温胆汤) could be prescribed to resolve phlegm, dispel dampness, eliminate stagnation, and tranquilize the mind.

ABSTRACT

Children with specific language impairment(SLI)have normal cognitive abilities but experience language deficits. The heterogeneity of language disorders makes SLI children optimal subjects for investigating the correlation between language ability and theory of mind. This paper provides a comprehensive review of foreign em-pirical studies examining the relationship between language ability and theory of mind in SLI groups from various perspectives. The findings indicate that specific types of language disorders exhibit delayed development in theory of mind, which is closely associated with their language ability deficits.Among all linguistic elements, syntactic de-fects demonstrate the most concentrated evidence regarding their impact on theory of mind.It is noteworthy that al-though SLI children offer valuable insights into the correlation between language and theory of mind, further investi-gation is still required to comprehensively comprehend this association. The present study also provides recommenda-tions for future research endeavors in this domain.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND:Current studies have shown that electronic moxibustion can improve memory function in amnestic mild cognitive impairment;however, its mechanism of action needs to be further investigated. The atrophy of hippocampal volume and impairment of functional connectivity are important imaging markers of amnestic mild cognitive impairment.Whether electronic moxibustion can regulate the volume of hippocampal subregion of partients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment is worth studying. OBJECTIVE:To observe the effect of electronic moxibustion on the volume of hippocampal subregions in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment. METHODS:Forty patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment were recruited from April 1,2018 to January 31,2019 at the community service centers around the Second Affiliated Hospital of Shenzhen University(Baoan Hospital of Southern Medical University),Shenzhen,China. They were randomly divided into treatment group(n=20)and control group(n=20).The treatment group was treated with electronic moxibustion of regulating the mind and benefiting the intelligence, while the control group was treated with placebo moxibustion.Moxibustion was given at 45 oC,20 minutes each time, once a day,5 times a week, for 8 weeks in total.Memory evaluation using Rivermead behavioral memory test and magnetic resonance imaging scanning for detecting the hippocampal subregion volume were performed for each patient before and after treatment, and cognitive function of each patient was assessed using Montreal cognitive assessment and mini-mental state examination.Correlation of hippocampal subregion volumes with scores on each scale was analyzed. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:After treatment, the volumes of the left parasubiculum and the left hippocampal-amygdala migrating area increased in the treatment group but decreased in the control group, and there was a significant difference between the two groups(P<0.05).Compared with the pre-treatment data, the Rivermead behavioral memory test,Montreal cognitive assessment, and mini-mental state examination scores were significantly higher in the treatment group after treatment(P<0.05),while there was no significant change in the three scale scores in the control group after treatment(P>0.05).The three scale scores were higher in the treatment group than in the control group after treatment(P<0.05).Pearson correlation analysis showed that the changes in the volume of the left parasubiculum was significantly and positively correlated with the Rivermead behavioral memory test scale score in the treatment group(r=0.418,P=0.014).To conclude, electronic moxibustion can improve memory in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment, and the mechanism may be the regulation of structural plasticity in hippocampal subregions.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The theory of mind (ToM) is the ability to recognize one's own mental states and infer them in others, fundamental in socio-emotional/cognitive development in preschoolers. This study sought to describe the ToM of 3- and 4-year-old Chilean children, to analyze the differences in their development according to age, and the mediating role of maternal mentalizing language (ML) considering the sex of the children, the internal working models (IWM) and maternal educational level. The sample considered 110 children with their mothers. A sociodemographic questionnaire, tests to evaluate the ToM, the ML and the IWM of the mothers were applied. 50.9% of the children were in quintile 1 of the ToM and none managed to reach the fifth. The ToM skills with a higher level of achievement were differentiating between pretending and reality (60.0%) and differentiating one's own visual perspective and another's (50.9%). 59.1 % of the children did not manage to infer wishes through the gaze, 83.6% did not achieve the ability to access knowledge, and 100% did not achieve the false belief. The results show significant differences between children of different age ranges in the development of ToM, suggesting a growing difficulty in acquiring their skills. In addition, a higher ML in mothers was related to a greater development of ToM in children, with a mediating role in the influence of IWM and maternal educational level on ToM.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Social cognition is an umbrella term used to address the set of neurocognitive processes involved in effective social interaction, such as Theory of Mind and empathy, and is important for understanding of others' intentions and actions and decision making. Narratives can serve as tools for learning social norms and understanding other people, as they involve mental simulations of social interactions. This review aimed to gather the results of current studies on the effects of reading and watching fiction movies on the development of social cognition. We included 16 publications, all of which were empirical studies. The results showed that, depending on individual factors, as well as on the specifics of the intervention, both reading and watching movies seem to influence the processes of development of social cognition, especially if associated with concomitant or subsequent activities, such as discussions. More research is needed to understand the specific details of this relationship.

ABSTRACT

Resumos Despite having "mental" in its name, as far as professionals engaged in daily services for persons with mental disorders are concerned, there is not much scrutiny about the theoretical assumptions involved in characterizing and delimiting the field of mental health. What is "mental" in mental health? In order to strengthen the interdisciplinary aspects of this field, we will carry out an analysis of the theory by Terrence Deacon, a contemporary evolutionary biologist who studies the emergence of life and mind, and will offer this discussion as an essential formative aspect as yet neglected in mental health practice. In conclusion, we will consider how Deacon's view entails an approach to mental health in which cannot be conceived devoid of normative, subjective and environmental aspects..

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT. Theory of mind is a social cognition ability to infer thoughts, feelings and intentions. It is a skill that underpins social relationships and seems particularly relevant to the exercise of certain activities linked to mindreading, such as healthcare practice, for example, in Psychosocial Care Centers. This theoretical study aims to analyze the importance of social cognition skills for mental health practitioners, seeking to identify and discuss possible factors that impact how these professionals infer what service users are thinking, feeling or wanting. The analysis allowed us to observe how the theory of mind can become an important tool for professionals in the therapeutic process. In particular, the study concludes that work in Psychosocial Care Centers has exposed professionals to various stressors that seem to have an effect on their social cognition skills, which can harm not only their health but also their ability to attend to the needs of service users.

ABSTRACT

Background: One of the most important impediments in traumatic brain injuries (TBI), are the difficulties of social and family interaction. The Theory of Mind (ToM) is a fundamental factor of social cognition, which allows a satisfactory interaction of the individual with his environment. Objetive: To observe the ability of ToM in moderate or severe TBI patients, and its relationship with neurocognitive domains. Methods: Outpatients with diagnosis of moderate or severe TBI, evaluated neuropsychologically, age between 16 and 45 years, were applied Eyes Test (ET) and the Hinting task (HT). Results: Correlations were found between ET and HT with memory and executive functions. Injured left, perform significantly less in HT Patients with moderate or severe TBI have a decrease in ToM capacity. Conclusions: There is a relationship between episodic memory and ToM, which could be due to the latter 's need to request information from past experiences through episodic memory. During childhood ToM depends on episodic memory, but when both are achieved and developed properly, they are independent. There is a relationship between executive functions and ToM. Both constructs are linked in childhood, but then they begin to be more independent. However, ToM tasks will also require executive functions.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective: To investigate the performance of 27 children with phenylketonuria (PKU) in tests of Executive Functions (EF) and Social Cognition (SC), and their associations with metabolic control inferred by phenylalanine (Phe) levels. Methods: The PKU group was dichotomized according to baseline Phe-levels into; "classical PKU"(n = 14), with Phe-levels above 1200 µmol/L (> 20 mg/dL); and "mild PKU" (n = 13) with Phe-between 360 and 1200 µmol/L (6-20 mg/dL). The neuropsychological assessment focused on the EF and SC subtests of the NEPSY-II battery and intellectual performance. Children were compared to age-matched healthy participants. Results: Participants with PKU presented significantly lower Intellectual Quotient (IQ) compared to controls (p = 0.001). Regarding EF analysis adjusted by age and IQ, significant differences between groups were observed only in the executive attention subtests (p = 0.029). The SC set of variables was significantly different between groups (p = 0.003), as in the affective recognition task (p < 0.001). In the PKU group, the relative variation of Phe-achieved 32.1 ± 21.0%. Relative Phe-variation was correlated only with measures of Working Memory (p < 0.001), Verbal Fluency (p = 0.004), Inhibitory Control (p = 0.035) and Theory of Mind (p = 0.003). Conclusions: Phonological Verbal Fluency, Working Memory, Inhibitory Control, and Theory of Mind were shown to be most vulnerable when there is non-ideal metabolic control. Variations in the level of Phe-may have a selective negative effect on Executive Functions and Social Cognition, but not on intellectual performance.
