ABSTRACT
Dentists are a high risk group for the development of musculoskeletal disorders and considering that the industrial production system develops products that serve the majority of the right-handed population, lefthanded students need to adapt to an academic training, using instruments, dental chairs and other objects designed for right-handers. This study aimed to collect information about left-handers in Dentistry courses in the city of Uberlândia - Minas Gerais. All left- handed students enrolled in the year 2022 and who were taking or had taken courses with laboratory or clinical activities were included. Questionnaires were applied to identify the profile, difficulties, ergonomics and musculoskeletal pain of left-handed students in their activities. The data were tabulated and then undergo statistical analysis. Of the total number of students from the three institutions (n=1,578), 45 (2.8%) left-handed students were interviewed, the majority being female (80%), in which an inadequate positioning of the left-handed operator was identified when compared to the recommended one by ISO-FDI, in addition to limitation of movement in the presence of an assistant (82.2%). The places with the highest frequency of pain/discomfort were: neck (79%), upper left back (63%) and lower left back (61%) and left wrists/hands (56%). The intensity of pain varied between some, moderate and a lot. The impediment to carrying out daily activities was reported by 17% of the students (n=7) and of these, only 1 sought medical attention. There was no statistical difference when comparing public and private institutions. In view of the results, it was concluded that left-handers represent a minority of dentistry students and have several regions of pain/discomfort due to adaptations and wrong postures during consultations. Although most of them had pain, few were prevented from performing routine activities or sought medical help(AU)

Background: In dentistry, musculoskeletal (MSK) pain creates a significant occupational health hazard jeopardizing the efficient delivery of care to the patients. There are several factors linked to the job that contribute to the higher incidence of MSK pain among dental practitioners. Uncomfortable postures and movements, frequent and prolonged working hours, the amount of time spent with each patient are some of the work-related factors of work related lower back pain which need to be addressed to prevent the disabling effects in the long run. The study aims to evaluate the prevalence of work related lower back pain and significance of associated risk factors in Saudi Arabia. Methods: Self-administered questionnaire were distributed to 384 dental practitioners who were working in various clinics in Saudi Arabia. This survey had four sections with questions related to demographic data, clinical practice, ergonomic principles, and psychosocial impacts. Descriptive statistics including chi-square analyses and associated significance were performed. Results: The relationship between age, years of experience and back pain among dental professionals was found to be significant with back pain lasting between 1 to 7 days in 34.2% among the participants. Older individuals with more experience tend to use back braces, analgesics, and physiotherapy more often. The cumulative prevalence of back pain in the study was 42.2%, with the majority of participants working for 2-8 hours per day. Various types of back strain injuries were observed across age groups and experience levels. Psychosocial impacts like job dissatisfaction and missed workdays were more pronounced in older individuals. The type of dental work and sitting posture also influenced back pain in specific age groups with significant associations observed. Conclusions: Our study sheds light on the significant issue of MSK pain among dental practitioners in Saudi Arabia, emphasizing its complex nature involving physiological, ergonomic and psychosocial factors. Found high prevalence of MSK pain, especially lower back discomfort, linked to factors like sitting postures and long working hours.
ABSTRACT
The rapidly expanding realm of Electronic Sports (eSports) has captivated global attention, blurring the lines between virtual entertainment and traditional athletics. As participation in eSports continues to rise, these competitive gaming platforms are increasingly recognized as legitimate sports. However, with this surge in participation, there's a simultaneous increase in the susceptibility to health hazards, spanning both physical and psychological domains. Musculoskeletal injuries, caused by extended sedentary postures and repetitive motions, afflict eSports athletes, resulting in discomfort in the wrists and hands, alongside back and neck problems. The prolonged exposure to screens predisposes participants to vision-related concerns, highlighting the imperative of addressing ocular health within the eSports community. Simultaneously, the intense cognitive demands and competitive pressures exacerbate mental health challenges, resulting in depression and anxiety among players. Similar to traditional athletes, eSports competitors need appropriate protocols to minimize injury risks, alongside access to medical intervention to manage potential health hazards. This review comprehensively analyses the health dynamics of eSports, elucidating injury profiles, intervention strategies, and health optimization protocols essential for safeguarding the well-being of eSports athletes and enhancing awareness within the eSports community.

Background With the rapid development of China's express delivery industry, small parcel couriers generally report overtime, excessive intensity, and high work load, and are at a high risk of developing work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). Using questionnaires to conduct research on WMSDs-associated postures may contain unavoidable subjectivity, and the simulation methods can quantitatively evaluate WMSDs, boasting advantages such as high efficiency and low cost, and become a research development trend. Objective To conduct ergonomic evaluation of typical postures of express couriers handling small parcels using a simulationmethod. Methods SolidWorks software was used to establish a geometric model of a parcel (530 mm depth × 290 mm width × 370 mm height), a geometric model of an express carriage (1.4 m depth × 0.9 m width × 1.17 m height), and a geometric model of a delivery truck (1.7 m height). These models were imported into Jack software, and the weight of parcel was set at 20 kg. The digital model of a male express courier was established in Jack software. A typical parcel handling task was defined as standing on one side of the express carriage and bimanually placing parcels at four different heights (top, upper half, middle, and bottom of the carriage) combined with three horizontal positions (outer side, center, and inner side of the carriage). The visual field and reach zones tools in Jack software were used to determine whether the parcels can be seen and touched by the express courier, and determine the operational posture of the express courier at their ends of motion ranges. The Ovako working posture analysis system (OWAS) and rapid upper limb assessment (RULA) tools in Jack software were used to evaluate postures applied at typical vertical and horizontal distances. Results The maximum horizontal and vertical gaze fields effectively covered the area where the parcels were located, but some areas were not within the optimal field of view. When the horizontal distance between the parcel and the express courier exceeded 48 cm, the express courier was not able to directly reach it and had to adjust his standing position or posture to perform the task. The OWAS analysis found that when the express item was placed at the top, upper section, or middle of the carriage, the risk level of the courier's work posture was level 1, suggesting a normal posture. When the parcel was placed at the inner side bottom of the carriage, the courier needed to bend his knees and lower back, and the highest risk level for the posture was level 3, which had harmful effects on the musculoskeletal system, and correctiveactions were required as soon as possible. The other two work postures placing the parcel elsewhere in the bottom were graded level 2, which may cause harm to the musculoskeletal system , and corrective actions were required in the near future. The RULA analysis found that the risk of the posture was level 2 for handling the parcel in the upper or middle of the carriage, and level 3 for handling the parcel at the top or bottom of the carriage. When the parcel was placed at the bottom of the carriage, as the horizontal distance between the express item and the courier increased, the risk of posture increased to level 3 or above, and the risk reached level 4 for the parcel located at the innermost side of the carriage. Conclusion There is a significant risk of WMSDs in manually handling parcels at different heights and horizontal positions. The risk levels of associated postures are elevated from low to high following the express item pleased at the middle, upper, bottom, and top of the carriage and the extension of horizontal distances, if the express item is placed at the bottom of the carriage, between the courier and the parcel. By installing doors on both sides of the express delivery carriage, it is possible for the express courier to adjust his standing position and provide a vertical motion range, ensuring best visual field and reach zones.

ABSTRACT
Abstract Introduction: while high-risk processes with high accident rates challenge safety, High Reliability Organization (HRO) achieve excellent indicators. In both cases, prevention seems to have reached a limit. In the former, because it seems powerless to generate prevention; in the latter, because it has been so successful that it seems impossible to reach greater levels. Objective: to highlight the contribution of Ergonomics to safety in these situations, pointing out unexplored possibilities such as design Ergonomics in man-machine integration (computerized systems). Method: comparative analysis of findings from ergonomic studies on production systems with high accident rates and HRO. Discussion: analysis of the motorcycle freight drivers' activity revealed alternatives yet to be explored between unfavorable work relations and the perceived inevitability of accidents. The apparent limit of HRO can be overcome with recent advances in the analysis of situated action and cognition and by building debate spaces based on field experience. Collaborative design practices, which draw on worker experience to feed learning dynamics and technical reliability, remains a poorly explored possibility in Safety Engineering when it comes to computerized systems.
ABSTRACT
Endoscopic ergonomics, the study of the endoscopist's interaction with their work environment, aims to adapt tools and actions to their physical and psychological characteristics. Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are highly prevalent among endoscopists (39-89%), mainly due to repetitive movements. This issue is exacerbated by pro- cedures such as EUS, ERCP, and third space endoscopy, which demand more time and instrument use. Despite knowing the risk factors, preventive and modification strategies are scarce in endoscopic centers and the industry. This is concerning, given the impact on health, work disability, and the functioning of endoscopy services. It is crucial to raise awareness and educate on this topic to improve the quality of life of endoscopists and the efficiency of services

Abstract This document presents the ergonomic assessments carried out by Spanish surgeons on the materials used within an operating room. With the objective of disseminating and raising awareness of the importance of ergonomics, this working group has compiled information from a previously conducted survey on musculoskeletal disorders associated with surgical work from the year 2022, obtaining feedback from 131 surgeons from 17 distinct specialties. A noteworthy 80.2 % of surveyed surgeons reported having experienced forced postures during surgery, and 96.9 % believe that their physical discomfort is a result of the posture adopted during operations. Such postures can result in the development of pathologies and may have a direct impact on work performance and even in extreme cases, it can lead to sick leave or early retirement. By providing their insights on electronic devices, surgical furniture, and instrumentation, surgeons can help identify areas for improvement in the practice of their profession.
ABSTRACT
Abstract Risks are intrinsic to any human activity. Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMSs) are mechanisms designed to mitigate risks, protect workers, and ensure productivity. This study aimed to support researchers' reflective analysis by examining scientific literature related to OHSMSs and identifying possibilities for future research with practical significance. Employing a qualitative approach, this systematic review was conducted using bibliographic procedures and action research. The intervention instrument ProKnow-C guided by a structured process from a constructivist perspective, was applied. A total of 3,130 studies were analyzed to select the bibliographic portfolio. The systemic analysis revealed that most articles neither demonstrate legitimacy nor consider companies' particularities. The paper advances theoretical knowledge of OHSMSs by assessing relevant studies in the field, identifying evolution patterns, and highlighting gaps. A research agenda is proposed to guide the development of future models. We conclude that the challenges of designing ad hoc OHSMSs and incorporating the decision-makers' knowledge throughout the process when addressed, have the potential to significantly contribute to the advancement of this field of knowledge.

The descriptive study, based on bibliographic and documentary research, outlines the genesis and institutionalization of Social Security Medical Experts (PMP) in Brazil, highlight its critical content. Content Analysis categorized the thematic cores into historical periods that, based on the dialectical method, allowed us to combine a diachronic and synchronic analysis of the role, place, and social function of PMP. Their legal institutionalization reveals a historically conservative and anti-worker(s) stance that supports the expert action within the National Institute of Social Security (INSS), allowing us to affirm that such a field of power has no intention to solve occupational health issues, for the causality paradigm of health problems is given a priori by the working conditions under an ahistorical and decontextualized view of economic, political, ideological and social relations that influence the link between work and health/disease

Conclusion: The mediation of workstations through the implementation of ergonomic elements substantially improves the quality of academic work at home, making evident the importance of ergonomics as a scientific discipline
ABSTRACT
Greenhouse cultivation is spreading as it offers the grower a higher net yield per hectare from high quality crops as it reduces the likelihood of yield decline. The greenhouse is kept at 30-40? C with a relative humidity of up to 70%, which could be ideal for plant growth, but is not suitable for workers. Heat exposure in the workplace causes discomfort to the human while working. So, the main goal of conducting this research is to address the extent of heat stress and associated health issues for the greenhouse workers. The study was planned for 2022 in the Raipur district of Chhattisgarh. Prior to the assessment, a questionnaire survey was conducted among 50 greenhouse workers to learn perceptions of heat exposure, heat-related health issues and awareness of heat management. To get the heat exposure air temperature, wet bulb temperature, relative humidity, black globe temperature were measured on hourly basis. The wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) was measured along with greenhouse workers' physiological parameters to quantify heat exposure. With the help of clock diagram showing Humidex Index (HI). The time period at which farmers most likely to suffer from heat stress was estimated. It was reported that in April, May, June, July, August and September WBGT index reaches varied between 30 and 34°C. According to ISO 7243 the recommended WBGT for comfortable workplace should be less than 31°C. Further study was conducted to get physiological responses of the 21 farm workers in three different type of greenhouses and at three time slots. It resulted that heart rate was maximum i.e. 156 bpm in walk in tunnel at 11 am to 1 pm. The average working heart rate was 20 % more than the open field condition. Hence, the study will help to make the strategies to reduce the exposure of heat stress conditions to the greenhouse workers.

Introduction: The social isolation imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic has made it necessary to adapt to distance education. Objective: To determine the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders and their association with ergonomic practices during computer use in students from a Peruvian university. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in October 2020. The sample consisted of 738 students, they had the standardized Nordic questionnaire to detect symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders; and another, developed by the authors, to evaluate ergonomic practices. Results: The prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders was 97.4%. The most affected regions were the neck (85.5%), the lumbar region (73%) and the dorsal region (70.2%). Students with history of trauma (PRa: 1.03; 95% CI: 1.01-1.04) who, while using the computer, adopted the prone position (RPa: 1.02; 95% CI : 1.01-1.04) and sitting with head tilted (RPa: 1.03; 95% CI: 1.00-1.07) had higher prevalence of a musculoskeletal disorder. Conclusions: There is high prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in university students. The female sex and those who adopt incorrect postures while using the computer stand out; therefore, preventive and intervention ergonomic measures should be provided in this population.
ABSTRACT
Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMD) can affect joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments and peripheral nerves and are common in agriculture due to work overload, excessive and repetitive efforts and the adoption of inappropriate postures to perform activities. The objective of this study is to present the prevalence of WRMD, the intensity and characteristics of pain, in addition to describing the categories and work tools of farmers in the western region of Paraná. A cross-sectional observational study was carried out with a representative sample of farmers associated with the worker Ìs union in the region. For data collection, we used a sociodemographic questionnaire, a form on categories and work tools, the visual analogue pain scale, the Nordic questionnaire on musculoskeletal symptoms and the McGill questionnaire for pain characterization. A total of 144 farmers participated in the study, with a predominance of males (63.89%) aged between 18 and 47 years old (73.61%). The prevalence of WRMDs in farmers was 100% and the most affected body regions were the lower and upper back with 59.72% and 43.75% respectively. Pain intensity was moderate in 50.69% and nausea type in 89.58% of participants. Grain cultivation activity was present in 57.64% of individuals and the use of chainsaws and agricultural machinery were the most cited tools used during work. The findings point to the urgent need for therapeutic and preventive intervention to these land workers and can contribute to the scientific advancement of the area. Besides treating WRMDs, ergonomic adaptations in the work of farmers are essential.

Introduction: Ergonomic awareness and participation practices play an im- portant role in the prevention of occupational diseases. However, the methods used by institutions and companies' prevention programs aim to correct ergonomic risks and do not observe the human factor responsible for carrying out the task. Purpose: To analyze the use of Participation and Awareness Ergonomics as an education program aimed at raising awareness of ergonomic risks for the prevention of repetitive strain injuries (RSI) and work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMD). Methodology: Critical literature review, summarizing the theoretical basis relevant to the topic, with technical documen- tation, norms, decrees, ordinances, and updated statistical data on leave; thus forming the documental analysis. Results and discussion: Statistical data show the importance of changing habits, programs, and ergonomic interventions in the work environment of the worker, in order to minimize the socioeconomic impacts of the high removal rates of organizations, private companies, and, mainly, public higher education due to more pre- carious work environments. Ergonomic practices of awareness and participation of work- ers can improve the work environment's discomfort. The lack of research that prioritizes the cost-benefit ratio and long-term effectiveness in Ergonomics is highlighted. Conclu- sions: New studies must promote a significant improvement of the quality of life of work- ers, reduction of economic losses and, thus contribute to a safe environment, decent and sustainable, as advocated by Objective 8 of the United Nations 2030 Agenda.
