ABSTRACT

Background: Breastfeeding impacts the children physical and mental growth and development. The impact of breastfeeding on intelligence quotient (IQ) of children is under-researched in Pakistan. This study aimed to determine the impact of breastfeeding on the intelligence quotient among children of Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Methods: This comparative cross-sectional was performed among 88 children of the Rawalpindi. Patients’ enrolment in the study was done via non-probability convenient sampling and developed inclusion and exclusion criteria. Ethical approval and informed consent were taken. Intelligence quotient was calculated through Wechsler intelligence scale for children (WISC). Data analysis was done via descriptive and inferential statistics by statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) version 25. Chi square test was used to assess the variables association. P value less than 0.05 was set as statistically significant. Results: The overall mean score on WISC of intelligence quotient was 106 with SD of ±39, whereas, mean score of intelligence quotient for breastfed children was 112 with SD of ±32 and mean score of intelligence for children who were on formula milk was 100 with SD of ±36. The association between the type of milk and intelligence quotient (p=0.003) and association between duration of breastfeeding and intelligence quotient (p=0.04) was statistically significant. Conclusions: Children who had been on breastfeeding had better IQ. Furthermore, children who were breastfed for longer duration had even better IQ than children who were on breastfeeding for shorter duration.

ABSTRACT

Abstract We carried out an exploratory study of the association between exposure to violence, intelligence, and executive functions in Brazilian preadolescents. The study included 56 participants (31 males) aged 8 to 14 years old (mean = 11.3, SD = 1.0). We administered neuropsychological tests to evaluate executive functions and the Juvenile Victimization Questionnaire (JVQ) to evaluate exposure to violence. We used the following neuropsychological instruments: Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence (WASI), Stroop Color-Word Interference task, digits subtest of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, and an N-back task. We generated a composite score from neuropsychological test scores and investigated the association of that score, and individual test scores, with exposure to violence and socioeconomic status (SES). Results suggest, first, that exposure to violence is associated with a 0.5-point lower intelligence quotient score for every reported victimization event in the Juvenile Victimization Questionnaire. Results also show that the digits backward subtest scores showed a significant negative correlation with exposure to violence (JVQ; rho = -0.29, p < 0.05); both analyses were adjusted for the level of schooling of parents or guardians, which was also found to be significantly associated with lower intelligence quotient scores. We discuss results in the light of the existing literature on the effects of exposure to violence on adolescent development, and the amounting evidence that suggests an association of exposure to violence, and of victimization, with tests that evaluate constructs of executive functions. The study struggled with low compliance from participants, and we underscore the challenges of carrying out empirical studies aimed at better understanding the development of underrepresented youths, such as those from Central and Latin America.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the relationship between children's intelligence and urinary fluoride in Suojia Township of Miao, Yi and Hui Nationalities (referred to as Suojia Township), a coal-burning-borne endemic fluorosis area in Guizhou Province. Methods:In April 2019, 173 children aged 10 to 13 years old were selected from three schools in Suojia Township. According to whether they had dental fluorosis, the children were divided into case group ( n = 104) and control group ( n = 69). Middle segment urine samples of the children were collected and urinary fluoride level was determined by the method of ion-selective electrode. Combined Raven's Test-the Rural in China (CRT-RC2) was used for children's intelligence quotient (IQ) test. Linear regression analysis was used to observe the association between urinary fluoride and IQ, and the results were expressed by regression coefficient ( β) and 95% confidence interval ( CI). Results:Urinary fluoride level of case group was higher than that of control group [(2.14 ± 1.78) vs (1.53 ± 0.98) mg/L], and IQ was lower than that of control group [(92.33 ± 11.68) vs (100.38 ± 11.87) points], and the differences were statistically significant ( t = 2.58, 4.41, P < 0.05). The linear regression equation of urinary fluoride ( X) and IQ ( Y) of case group was Y = 96.99 - 2.86 X. For every 1 mg/L increase in urinary fluoride level, IQ decreased by 2.86 points ( β = - 2.86, 95% CI: - 5.48 - - 0.24). Conclusion:Long-term exposure to fluoride pollution from coal burning may damage children's intelligence, and children's IQ decreases with increase of fluoride level in urine.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To learn about the status of thyroid function and intelligence quotient (IQ) of children in areas with different iodine nutrition levels in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and to explore the health risk of children with median urinary iodine of 200 - 299 μg/L, and to provide a basis for scientific iodine supplementation. Methods:In May 2019, in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Altay Prefecture and Kashgar Prefecture were selected, where the median urinary iodine of children aged 8 to 10 years were 100 - 199 and 200 - 299 μg/L for three consecutive years (2017 - 2019). A stratified random sampling method was used to select 400 children aged 8 to 10 years in each of the two regions, urine and blood samples were collected to detect urinary iodine and thyroid function [thyrotropin stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (FT 4), free triiodothyronine (FT 3), anti-thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb), and anti-thyroperoxidase antibody (TPOAb)]. At the same time, children's IQ was measured and determined by Second Revision of Combined Raven's Test (CRT-C2) in China and Second Revision of Combined Raven's Test for Children-the Rural, in China (CRT-RC2). Results:The median urinary iodine of children aged 8 to 10 years in Altay Prefecture and Kashgar Prefecture was 188.6 and 250.1 μg/L, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference in thyroid function indexes TSH and FT 3 levels between the two regions ( Z = - 0.58, t = 0.49, P > 0.05), while there was statistically significant difference in FT 4 level ( t = 60.08, P < 0.001). There was no statistically significant difference in TgAb positive rate [3.6% (14/394), 4.0% (16/399)] between the two regions (χ 2 = 0.11, P = 0.736), but the difference of TPOAb positive rate [9.6% (38/394), 30.6% (122/399)] was statistically significant (χ 2 = 53.93, P < 0.001), while the difference of dual antibody positive rate [0.8% (3/394), 2.0% (8/399)] was not statistically significant ( P = 0.134). There was no statistically significant difference in the detection rates of subclinical hypothyroidism [8.9% (35/394), 11.0% (44/399)], subclinical hyperthyroidism [1.0% (4/394), 1.3% (5/399)] and hyperthyroidism [0.3% (1/394), 0.8% (3/399)] in children between the two regions ( P > 0.05). The IQ results of children in the two regions were 96.55 ± 11.36 and 89.57 ± 12.35, respectively, and there was no significant difference between them ( t = 2.79, P = 0.095). Conclusions:The thyroid function status of children is similar in the two regions with median urinary iodine of 100 - 199 μg/L and 200 - 299 μg/L in children aged 8 to 10 years, but the TPOAb positive rate is significantly different. Children whose iodine nutritional level is at or above the appropriate level have no obvious changes in intelligence. It is suggested that median urinary iodine at 200 - 299 μg/L is a relatively safe iodine nutrition state.

ABSTRACT

(AU)

Introduction: To evaluate the association between plasma levels of chemokine CCL11, intelligence quotient, and exposure to breastfeeding in men with schizophrenia under stable psychiatric condition and monitored as outpatients in a public health care unit. Methods: A case-control study of 60 individuals, 30 patients with schizophrenia and 30 healthy controls; in each group, 15 were exposed to breastfeeding and 15 were not. A questionnaire addressing socioeconomic issues, history at birth, clinical data, and feeding at birth was administered. Chemokine CCL11 levels were measured, and psychological tests were applied to assess intelligence quotient, functional status, psychiatric symptoms, disease course, and diagnosis. A scale to rule psychiatric illness was used for the controls. Results: Chemokine CCL11 levels were significantly higher (> 0.5) in patients with schizophrenia than in controls. In the breastfed group, patients with schizophrenia also had significantly higher CCL11 levels, but at an intermediate level (between 0.106 and 0.5). There was no correlation between CCL11 and number of hospitalizations, age, time since diagnosis, or level of education, nor between duration of breastfeeding and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale factors. A trend toward a correlation was observed between age at disease onset and breastfeeding. There was a positive correlation between CCL11 and duration of breastfeeding. The comparison of patients with schizophrenia who were breastfed vs those who were not breastfed showed a statistically significant difference only in intelligence quotient. Conclusion: Breastfeeding is associated with lower CCL11 levels, higher intelligence quotient scores, and schizophrenia. Chemokine CCL11 levels are higher in those not exposed to breastfeeding, especially in patients with schizophrenia. (AU)

ABSTRACT

Introduction @#Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a disorder that occurs during childhood development, which presents with signs of reduced attention and hyperactivity [1]. Necessary nutrients, such as trace minerals, including manganese, iron, zinc, iodine, selenium, copper, and chromium, are associated with changes in neuronal function that can lead to adverse effects on behavior and learning [2]. In addition to these, social, emotional, behavioral problems, and cognitive impairments such as executive dysfunctions are common in ADHD [3].@*Goal@#To evaluate the hair elements and intelligence quotient in children with ADHD. @*Materials and Methods@#This is a cross-sectional comparative study conducted at elementary schools of Ulaanbaatar city. All in all 60 children of both genders aged between 7-12 years old were included in the study. Children were divided into two groups as children with ADHD group and a control group. Each group had 30 children. For assessment of emotional Intelligence EQ-i:YV - Emotional Quotient Inventory: Youth Version (Bar-On & Parker, 2000; it ad. Sannio Fancello, & Cianchetti, 2012) was used. Scalp hair samples were randomly collected from approximately ten sites around both sides of posterior parietal eminences and external occipital protuberance. Samples were then packed at room temperature and submitted for laboratory analysis. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences (Reg. No. 2018/Д-10).@*Results@#The IQ of children with ADHD group were 85.03±16.86 p<.0001 and the IQ of control group =108.9±21.22, p<.0001. We identified hair minerals such as Mg, Zn, Pb, Se, Mn. We have then compared to each group and normal ranges of ages. ADHD group and the control group had Pb concentration that was slightly higher and inversely Mg concentration was slightly lower (r=-0.502, p=.005). Concentration of Pb, IQ were directly opposite (r=-0.38, p=.03).@*Conclusion@#</br> 1. IQ was lower in the ADHD group compared to control group 85.03±16.86 p<.0001, monitored group 108.9±21.22, p<.0001. </br> 2. The group with ADHD had lower Mg, Zn, and higher Pb, Se, Mn (p<.0001). The IQ decreased when there was increased Pb and decreased Mg.

ABSTRACT

Background: Paucity of studies in world literature and lack of any Indian study assessing the frequency, prevalence and severity of minor physical anomalies (MPAs) in children with mental retardation (MR) as well as their importance for prediction and timely recognition of mental insufficiency, if any. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study involving 273 mentally retarded children aged 5-18 years was conducted over a period of one year and were compared with their age and sex matched controls. Waldrop and Halverson (1971) physical anomaly scale was used to assess those MPAs.Results: In the study group, higher percentage (79.85% vs. 40.29%) of children had MPAs with a predominance of multiple MPAs in comparison to healthy children (40.29% and 0%, respectively). Higher average frequency of MPAs per child was noted in the study group (1.42) than control group (0.40). Mean Waldrop weighting score was significantly higher among mentally retarded children than their controls (3.7'0.8 versus 0.8'0.2, P<0.0001). Authors noticed a gradual and significant decrease in Waldrop score with increase in intelligence quotient (IQ) [F=175.72, P<0.001]. A significant strong negative correlation between Waldrop score and IQ level (r=-0.89, P<0.001) was also observed. Out of eighteen variables of Waldrop score, seven were found as significant in binary logistic regression model for MR. Our model can explain 37.6% to 50.1% variability of the MR.Conclusions: MPAs are more prevalent in mentally retarded children than healthy children.' A clear-cut demarcation between these two groups is possible by the frequency of anomalies and the increased strength of their expression (i.e. their weighting scores).

ABSTRACT

@#Tahfiz school is an institution that specialises in educating students to memorize and recite the whole Al-Quran. Memorizing the Al-Quran by rote learning will activate the brain to improve the brain ability to process, store information and build memory. The presence of heavy metals affects the nervous system and interferes with the function of the central and peripheral nervous system which will then cause the impairment of mental and cognitive function. The ability to learn, remember or memorize, use of language and to understand something may be disrupted and cause small decrease in IQ and attention. Cross-sectional studies was conducted to measure and to determine the correlation between the levels of heavy metals, Al-Quran memorization and intelligence (IQ) among students in selected tahfiz schools compared to non-tahfiz schools in Selangor. Levels of heavy metals in nail and hair samples were analyzed by using the Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). WASI-II test for intelligence was used to measure the student’s IQ. Questionnaires was used to obtain demographic data and was analyzed by using the SPSS version 23.0. Based on the Pearson correlation test, there was a very weak negative correlation and significant relationship between manganese in the hair samples with the level of Al-Quran memorization (r= -0.178, p=0.017). In addition, there was a weak positive correlation but significant relationship between the level of intelligence (IQ) with the level of Al-Quran memorization (r= 0.375, p=<0.001). As a conclusion, the higher the concentration of manganese will cause a decline in the level of Al-Quran memorization and the higher the level of Al-Quran memorization will cause an increase in the level of intelligence (IQ).

ABSTRACT

Working memory (WM) refers to ability to store and manipulate information for a period of time. There is evidence of a close relationship between WM and learning. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between WM, intelligence quotient (IQ) on school achievement. Individual neuropsychological assessment was conducted following a specific protocol. The study included 227 children aged 7 to 12 years (M=9.87, SD=1.34), of which 119 were females, from private and public schools in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. The data analysis included descriptive and inferential statistics. Academic achievement was evaluated using the Academic Performance Test (TDE), with subtests in reading, writing and arithmetic. The components of WM were evaluated using backward and forward Digit Span tasks and the backward and forward Corsi block-tapping task. The estimated IQ was assessed using tasks vocabularies and block design of the Wechsler scales. The statistical tests used were linear regression analysis (stepwise) and Pearson correlation. The results showed that the best predictors of academic performance were Digit Span Forward, Corsi Block Backward and Digit Span Backward task. The hypothesis of non-multicollinearity was tested, and it was verified that the constructs were independent (VIF <10 and Tolerance >0.20). The variance in academic performance explained by WM model was ΔR=0.36. High and significant correlations were observed between the components of WM and the TDE. The WM score (Digit Span Backward + Corsi Block Backward) and the TDE were correlated (r=0.54**). These results indicate that WM is a good predictor of academic achievement than IQ and are consistent with other findings showing WM as a predictor of learning or the potential for learning. This result has important implications for education, particularly with respect to intervention.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Within the debate about whether intelligence is best defined by a general factor or specific skills, the hypothesis of cognitive differentiation gains relevance. Recent analyses have emphasized the importance of this issue in the investigation of cognitive skills and have highlighted its implications in education. This study examined the possibility that the differentiation of cognitive abilities may occur during childhood and investigated the moderating effect of Intelligence Quotient on the magnitude of the relationship between cognitive abilities. A battery of tests for assessing cognitive function was administered to 231 children aged 5, 7, and 9 years old, who were divided into three cognitive performance groups. The results of hierarchical cluster analysis and variance analysis indicate the lack of differentiation of cognitive functions during childhood. However, a more careful analysis suggests some differentiation supported by the heterogeneity of cognitive profiles among students with high Intelligence Quotient.

ABSTRACT

This paper investigate the effect of parents’ education background and family monthly income on the Intelligence Quotient (IQ) of students with special needs in Kelantan, Malaysia. This cross-sectional method study was employed multistage random sampling to obtain information drawn from 130 participants from 10 selected school in Kelantan, Malaysia. Questionnaire was used to obtain parents’ education background, family monthly income and demographic variables. Students IQ were assessed using Comprehensive Test for Non-Verbal Intelligence (CTONI 2nd Edition). Data analysis involve independent sample t-test, one-way between group ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation and multiple linear regression. From analysis of IQ score, 63.8% of the special needs students scored very poor IQ, 12.3% scored below average and only 1.5% score average IQ. Significant mean difference were revealed between age group (p = 0.002), parents’ education (p = 0.018) and family monthly income (p < 0.05) on special needs students IQ. Post-hoc tukey shows significance between parents who never went to school, went to secondary school (p = 0.037) and university/college (p = 0.021). In term of family monthly income, significance difference were found between family with low and high monthly income (p < 0.05). Family monthly income (r = 0.393, p < 0.01) showed positive moderate correlation on special needs students IQ. After being forwarded by multiple linear regression, it was found that family monthly income (B = 3.605, p < 0.05) and age group of special needs students (B = 0.879, p = 0.002) were significant predictor for IQ score and explained 22.5% of the variance (R2 = 0.225, F (5,124) = 83.94, p < 0.05. Overally, majority of special needs students in current study have very poor IQ score. Further explanation are discussed on the paper.

ABSTRACT

Objective:By analyzing the norm data results of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Fourth Edition (WAIS-Ⅳ) in China,to prove the validity of the procedure and methods during the norming development. Methods:The whole process of the revision of WAIS-Ⅳ,the development of computer-assisted system and norm sampling plan, were introduced in more detail, and the distribution of actual norm data of 1757 cases was analyzed. Results:For area distribution, compared with planned sampling number, the number from North and Northeast China was statistically significant different (x2 =78.02,P <0.01).For age stages distribution, most of cases conformed to the requirements of sampling, except that some cases including high-level educational cases aged 16-17 years and above 65 years, and low-level educational cases aged 30-34 years were less than the planned sampling number. For gender distribution, male subjects were more, but there was no statistically significant difference between male and female subjects (x2 =228,P =0.131).For educational degree distribution, the sampling conformed to the requirements of sampling plan (x2 =2.74,P =0.603).For occupation, resident years and registered permanent residence, and the sample was basically representative. Conclusion:The process of the revision of the Chinese version of WAIS-Ⅳ is appropriate, and actual norm sampling basically conforms to planned sample distribution, providing the sufficient representativeness and reliability for national norm data of WAIS-Ⅳ.

ABSTRACT

Objective To assess the cognitive function of drug intractable frontal lobe or temporal lobe epilepsy patients, and summarize the characteristics and influencing factors of cognitive dysfunction in these patients. Methods Forty-two patients with drug intractable frontal lobe or temporal lobe epilepsy, admitted to our hospital from April 2014 to December 2014,were chosen in our study;in them,17 were frontal lobe epilepsy and 25 were temporal lobe epilepsy. All patients underwent cognitive function assessments, including Wechsler intelligence scales (WAIS-RC) and Wechsler memory scale (WMS),one week before surgery. Results (1) As compared with the norm mean (100),the scores of full scale intelligence quotient (FIQ,87.23 ±10.12) and verbal intelligence quotient (VIQ,86.26±8.79) in patients with epilepsy were decreased, with statistically significant difference (P<0.05);in the subtests of VIQ,the scores of arithmetic and vocabulary in the frontal lobe epilepsy group were significantly lower than those in the temporal lobe epilepsy group (P<0.05);multiple factors analysis found the FIQ scores of the group of younger than 14 years old in age of epilepsy onset were significantly lower than those in the group of older than 14 years old (P<0.05);the FIQ scores ofmultidrug therapy group were significantly lower than those of mono therapy group (P<0.05).(2) As compared with the norm (100 and 60),the scores of memory quotient (MQ,82.42±8.31) and short-term memory (50.05± 2.69) of epilepsy group were statistically lower (P<0.05);the scores of MQ and short-term memory of temporal epilepsy group were significantly lower than those of frontal epilepsy group (P<0.05).Conclusion There are many influence factors for cognitive function of epilepsy patients and the damages of cognitive function in frontal lobe or temporal lobe epilepsy patients are different, which might be related to the distributions of brain functional regions and damage of neural network connection.

ABSTRACT

Objective To compare the intelligence quotient (IQ) between children with Asperger syndrome (AS) and children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in order to provide reliable evidence for differential diagnosis. Methods The intelligence of 141 children with AS,154 children with ADHD and 102 normal control (NC) children aged 6-13 years old examined by the China-Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children was analyzed, and the diagnoses of AS and ADHD was made according to the Fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder. Results The proportions of children at low level of IQ (borderline and mental retardation range) in children with AS and with ADHD group were both significantly higher than those of NC group. The proportions of children at top level of IQ (superior and very superior range) in ADHD group were significantly lower than those of AS and NC groups. In the AS group, higher proportions of verbal IQ (VIQ) at top level and performance IQ (PIQ) at low level were found. The average VIQ,PIQ and full IQ (FIQ) of the AS,ADHD and NC groups were (102.55 ± 17.27,91.31 ± 16.01,97.10 ± 15.88),(95.39 ±13.49,94.16 ± 12.92,94.40 ± 12.78) and (104.06 ± 13.66,103.05 ±11.80,103.91 ± 12.92),respectively.The VIQ,PIQ and FIQ in ADHD group were lower than those in NC group significantly(P < 0.01);compared with NC group, the PIQ and FIQ in AS group were significantly lower (P < 0.01),while the VIQ was not significantly different(P >0.05).The AS and ADHD group scored both lower than the NC groupin the subtests ofcomprehension, coding, picture completion andpicture arrangement (P < 0.01).The difference values between VIQ and PIQ in the AS,ADHD and TD group were(11.23 ± 17.29),(1.23 ± 13.10) and (1.00 ± 10.91),respectively,among which only the value in AS group was statistically significant (P < 0.01) but not in ADHD and NC group(P >0.05).The proportion of children having a VIQ-PIQ difference value more than 15 in AS group was 54.60% (77/141 cases),which was significantly higher than that in ADHD [22.07% (34/154 cases)] and NC groups [13.72% (14/102 cases)] (P < 0.01),while the latter 2 value had no statistical difference (P > 0.05).The differences among scores on the three Kaufman factors were significant in AS group (P < 0.01) but not in ADHD and NC groups(P > 0.05).Conclusions Compared with ADHD and normal control children, there are some unique intelligence profiles in children with AS,which show VIQ and PIQ separation, imbalance intelligence structure as well as strengths and weaknesses coexisting.Furthermore, children with ADHD and AS children share common features in some subtests scores.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To assess the cognitive development of nonhandicapped low birth weight (LBW) infants at 18 years. Design: Prospective cohort study. Setting: Infants born between 1987 - 1989 with birth weight less than 2000g and discharged from a neonatal special care unit were followed up till the age of 18 years. Methods: The intelligence quotient (IQ) was determined by Raven’s progressive matrices. Assessment of adjustment and aptitude was done. Results: The cohort of 161 LBW infants was divided into three groups according to their gestation - preterm SGA (n=61), full term SGA (n=30) and preterm AGA (n=70). 71 full term AGA infants served as controls. The IQ of the study group (Percentile 39.3) was significantly lower than that of controls (Percentile 54.9) (P=0.002). Preterm SGA subjects had the lowest IQ (Percentile 35.5), though just within normal limits. Males from the study group had significantly lower IQ than male controls (P=0.03). The IQ of PTSGA subjects of college educated mothers (P=0.004) and belonging to higher socio-economic class (P=0.04) was significantly higher. On the differential aptitude test, PTSGA subjects were poor in speed and mechanical reasoning. The 18 year IQ could be best predicted by IQ at 6 and 12 years. Conclusion: Preterm SGA children have the lowest IQ at 18 years, males have lower IQ. Maternal education and socioeconomic status have great impact on cognitive development. Good prediction of the 18 year IQ can be done by the 6 and 12 year IQ.
