ABSTRACT

Abstract The Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia, published since 1925, is the most influential dermatological journal in Latin America, indexed in the main international bibliographic databases, and occupies the 50th position among the 70 dermatological journals indexed in the Journal of Citations Reports, in 2022. In this article, the authors present a critical analysis of its trajectory in the last decade and compare its main bibliometric indices with Brazilian medical and international dermatological journals. The journal showed consistent growth in different bibliometric indices, which indicates a successful editorial policy and greater visibility in the international scientific community, attracting foreign authors. The increases in citations received (4.1 ×) and in the Article Influence Score (2.9×) were more prominent than those of the main Brazilian medical and international dermatological journals. The success of Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia in the international scientific scenario depends on an assertive editorial policy, on promptly publication of high-quality articles, and on institutional stimulus to encourage clinical research in dermatology.

ABSTRACT

Background/Objectives@#The current manual processes of manuscript submission, screening, review, and editorial management in the Pediatric Infectious Disease Society of the Philippines (PIDSP) Journal rely heavily on email exchanges between the authors and journal manager, who acts as the liaison for the editors-in-chief (EIC) and peer reviewers. This method proves inefcient. To address this, the PIDSP Journal Editorial Team created E-REVIEWS, aimed at streamlining journal procedures to boost manuscript submissions, and ensure timely publication. @*Methodology@#E-REVIEWS was developed using Python as the primary computer programming language and Django as the web framework. Gitlab served as the repository and facilitated the turnover of the software requirements from developers to PIDSP website administrators. Extensive internal testing preceded the system’s deployment to the PIDSP Journal website for real-world use. @*Results@#E-REVIEWS yielded 11 modules, each with unique functionalities including Registration/Login, Accounts Management, Dashboard, Author Submission, EIC Initial Screening, Similarity Check, Review, Revisions, Manuscript Layout, Editorial, and Help. Deployment to the PIDSP website occurred on May 13, 2024. Two manuscripts underwent screening, review, and editorial processes seamlessly through the system. Identified bugs were promptly addressed.@*Conclusion@#The development of E-REVIEWS hopes to revolutionize research dissemination, ensuring data privacy via its user-friendly automated online manuscript submission, peer review, and editorial process.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Exhaustive search is the basis for meta-analysis and evidence based medicine (EBM). The validity of searches can be confirmed by evaluating the core journals included in the search results. Core journals also exert significant influence because they serve as the hub of each discipline. However, the qualitative relationship between core journals and published articles has not been fully evaluated; therefore, core journals were selected for clinical articles on respiratory infectious diseases and were evaluated for their quality. Methods: We searched PubMed for clinical articles in three areas: drugs for respiratory infections, drug resistance, and vaccines. The core journals were selected based on Bradford’s Law. The quality of the selected articles was further assessed using the double-blind and randomized controlled trial (RCT) methods. Results: The Bradford curve that was created displayed a high R2 accuracy of 0.9971, 0.9981, and 0.9953 at the linear portion. Evaluation of the research quality of selected core journals revealed a statistically high quality in the field of respiratory infections and vaccines; however, no statistically significant difference was observed in the field of resistant bacteria. Conclusion: With exceptions in some areas, the quality of publications tended to be higher when core journals were selected based on Bradford’s Law. Different evaluation methods are required for fields unsuitable for randomization or blinding. In the future, it will be vital to consider evaluation methods for core journals according to the characteristics of the studies.

ABSTRACT

Forty years ago, when the journal Investigación y Educación en Enfermería was founded, it had the vision of being the main means of expression of the Faculty of Nursing at Universidad de Antioquia. Within this projection, from its beginnings, it sought to be the channel for the exchange of knowledge by nursing professionals in the country and in Latin America. To celebrate these anniversaries, a compilation was made of the most important information in the history of the journal, inviting us to reflect on the many achievements it has granted to our Faculty; also, recognition is given to everyone who has contributed to the journal and to the profession.

ABSTRACT

The Peruvian Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics (RPGO, for its acronym in Spanish) has obtained its inclusion in the important Scopus database. A quick review of the journal's publication recalls the editorial dedication of its six editors, four of whom had just recently chaired the Peruvian Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (SPOG, for its acronym in Spanish). The initial editorial work was carried out manually, on typewriters and continuously visiting the printing press, as well as the sponsors. The commitment of the SPOG Steering Committees to finance the publication and distribution of the issues allowed the gradual indexing to local, regional and international databases. Its internalization was expanded since the publication of the RPGO in the Open Journal Systems (OJS), a computer system where articles are published with punctuality, quality, including their editorial characteristics and the Information for Authors. Now the publication is only virtual, in English and Spanish, with visibility and impact of the articles since the beginning of the RPGO in 1955. With updated OJS data on the RPGO, the number of monthly visits to the abstracts reaches up to 10 thousand and monthly downloads of articles in PDF format reach more than 9 thousand. And, in the field of obstetrics and gynecology scientific journals in Latin America and Spain in Scopus, the h index of the RPGO by Google Scholar Metrics stands out as one of the best. At present, and facing future challenges, the activity of the RPGO has been strengthened, establishing an editorial team and tools that allow the already initiated professionalization of the processes of the editorial activity.

ABSTRACT

Most biomedical journals now require authors to declare their conflicts of interest (COI), especially financial ones, before they accept the manuscript for submission. This study aims to examine the COI policies of Nepalese healthcare journals. The sample constituted journals indexed in Nepal Journals Online (NepJOL) as of June 2021. Of the 68 that met our inclusion criteria, 38(55.9%) journals endorsed the COI policy of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. Thirty-six (52.9%) journals had a policy for reporting the COI. Financial COI was the only type of COI mentioned. All journals in Nepal are encouraged to request the authors to declare the COI for better transparency.

ABSTRACT

Introduction. Instruments in Spanish with known psychometric properties are required to measure the attitudes of medical students towards scientific activities. Objectives. To determine the psychometric properties of three instruments to measure attitudes towards scientific research, perceptions about barriers to research and attitudes towards scientific reading. Methods. A cross-sectional study was performed in 311 medical students from an university in Peru. The instruments used the Likert scale of six responses. A confirmatory analysis was performed by modeling structural structures. Results. The instrument on attitudes towards scientific research resulted in three factors, the first (9 items, coefficient α = 0.888), the second (8 items, α = 0.847) and the third (3 items, α = 0.653). Perceptions of barriers to research are evaluated with two factors, one with 6 items (α = 0.779) and the other with 4 items (α = 0.771). The instrument that measure attitudes towards scientific literature has two factors: the first measures expectancy values (8 items, α = 0.848) and the second measures self-perceived competences in scientific reading (4 items, α = 0.838). Conclusions. Three differentiated instruments applicable to medical students are presented. These have an established factorial structure and adequate internal reliability for the measurement of attitudes towards scientific research, barriers to research and towards the scientific literature.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Qualitative research seeks to understand the meaning and perspective of individuals and investigates considering the context. This paradigm allows the interpretation and study of phenomena from their own complexity. In public health, qualitative research has gained ground, as it allows the study of subjective aspects of the health-disease process. Objective: To describe and analyze qualitative research on health issues published in Colombian journals between 2011 and 2021. Materials and methods: A descriptive study on qualitative health research published in Colombian journals between 2011 and 2021 was carried out. Results: Eighty-one articles were included. The journal with the highest number of publications was the Revista de Salud Pública (44.4%). The year with the highest production corresponded to 2019 and the main design was the fundamental theory (17.3%). In 79% of the articles, women were the main author and nursing was the most frequent profession of undergraduate training. The most frequent topic was HIV/AIDS (12.3%), followed by cancer (11.1%). In 24.6% of the studies, a software was used for the analysis. Conclusions: Qualitative research in public health has had a variable dynamic in scientific production between 2011 and 2021. Despite its benefits, the adoption of computer programs for qualitative analysis is rare. Nursing stands out as the area that concentrates the largest number of qualitative studies in public health with contributions on topics such as COVID-19 and HIV/AIDS.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To analyze the specific reasons for journal articles being retracted due to biomedical research-related ethical issues after publication and propose corresponding preventive measures. Methods:Journal articles that were retracted between January 1, 2021, and January 1, 2023, were retrieved from PubMed, a literature database in the biomedical field. The retraction statements of those articles that were retracted due to ethical-related issues were analyzed with a summarization of detailed reasons and types. Results:A total of 77 and 128 articles were retracted due to ethical issues in 2021 and 2022 respectively, accounting for 3.9% and 5.4% of all retracted articles in the same period. The major ethical issue was the lack of valid ethical approval. Among articles retracted for ethical issues related to human trials, the proportion of articles retracted due to lack of valid ethical approval increased from 45.9% in 2021 to 57.0% in 2022, which also increased from 50.0% in 2021 to 67.3% in 2022 among retracted articles related to animal experiments. Other ethical issues included problems in the informed consent process, delay in obtaining ethical approval, inconsistency between ethical approvals and the content of the article, and violation of the principles of laboratory animal welfare. Conclusions:The ethical review of medical research involving humans and laboratory animal welfare needs to be strengthened. By promoting the construction of an institutional ethical review system, encouraging researchers to study ethics-related knowledge, standardizing ethical applications and approvals, improving the informed consent process, and attaching importance to the welfare of laboratory animals, the retraction due to ethical issues can be prevented.

ABSTRACT

Animal experiments play an important role in the process of biomedical research, and is a necessary way to transform basic medicine into clinical medicine. The standardization of animal experimental studies and reports determines the reliability and reproducibility of research results, and is also the key to transforming the results of animal experiments into clinical trials. In view of how to design and implement animal experiments, write animal experiment reports, and publish relevant academic papers in a more standardized way, LACM (Laboratory Animal and Comparative Medicine) has launched a new column of comparative medical research and reporting standards from 2023, focusing on the introduction and interpretation of international general norms related to laboratory animal and comparative medicine, such as ARRIVE 2.0 guidelines (Animal Research: Reporting of In Vivo Experiments). This article focuses on the development and application, basic content and priority of ARRIVE 2.0, as well as the scheme of implementing ARRIVE 2.0 guidelines in international biomedical journals, and explains the current situation and future plans of LACM following ARRIVE 2.0 guidelines. The research and report of animal experimental medicine following the ARRIVE 2.0 guidelines and other international norms is one of the important driving forces to promote the high-quality development of experimental animal science and biomedicine in China, and also a powerful means to implement the 3R principle and improve the welfare of laboratory animals. Through this article, we hope the majority of scientific researchers and editors will attach great importance and actively implement these international standards.

ABSTRACT

In response to the national strategy of building first-class journals and filling the gaps in English journals on radiation medicine and protection, the Radiation Medicine and Protection (RMP) was founded. Within three years, it has entered domestic and international databases such as DOAJ, Scopus, CSCD, WJCI and Embase with its CiteScore ranking first in the discipline and WJCI index surpassing a variety of international authoritative radiation protection journals. Collaborating with KeAi and Elsevier successively, this open access publisher has gained a significant number of international citations to achieve international visibility. Owing to the influence of disciplinary characteristics, domestic evaluation systems, and international exchange situation, RMP is facing development bottlenecks. We hope to explore breakthrough measures from the aspects of expanding manuscript sources, strengthening academic exchanges, and attracting young experts to joining the editorial board.
