ABSTRACT

ResumenLa deforestación es una de las principales causas de pérdida de biodiversidad en todo el mundo. Las hormigas son clave como ingenieras del ecosistema, por lo tanto, la pérdida de la diversidad de hormigas puede indicar la pérdida de funciones cruciales de los ecosistemas. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la riqueza de hormigas del suelo y estimar si los niveles superiores (Subfamilia y Género) pueden ser usados como sustitutos para estimar la riqueza de especies en diferentes estados de sucesión del bosque (bosque primario, bosque secundario y sistema agroforestal) en la Amazonía Oriental. Fueron muestreadas 65 parcelas en el estado de Maranhão y Pará entre 2011 y 2014. El esquema de muestreo siguió el procedimiento de Biología de Suelos Tropicales y Fertilidad (TSBF). Primero caracterizamos los tipos de vegetación de acuerdo con su edad y luego se estimó la riqueza de especies. Para evaluar si los taxones superiores pueden utilizarse como sustitutos utilizamos funciones lineales y exponenciales y correlación de Pearson. En total, se identificaron 180 especies distribuidas en 60 géneros. Los resultados mostraron que la riqueza fue superior en el bosque secundario intermedio (88) y avanzado (76) y fue menor en el sistema agroforestal (38) y bosque ribereño primario (35). El género fue el mejor sustituto para estimar la riqueza de especies de hormigas a través de los diferentes tipos de sucesión vegetal, explicando entre el 72-97 % (P < 0.001) de la variabilidad total de especies. Nuestros resultados confirman que el uso del nivel de género es un excelente sustituto para estimar la riqueza de especies de hormigas en la región y tanto los bosques en regeneración y sistemas agroforestales pueden contribuir en la conservación de la comunidad de hormigas en la Amazonía Oriental.


Abstract:Deforestation in Amazon forests is one of the main causes for biodiversity loss worldwide. Ants are key into the ecosystem because act like engineers; hence, the loss of ants' biodiversity may be a guide to measure the loss of essential functions into the ecosystems. The aim of this study was to evaluate soil ant's richness and to estimate whether higher taxa levels (Subfamily and Genus) can be used as surrogates of species richness in different vegetation types (fallows, old-growth forests and agroforestry systems) in Eastern Amazon. The samples were taken in 65 areas in the Maranhão and Pará States in the period 2011-2014. The sampling scheme followed the procedure of Tropical Soil Biology and Fertility (TSBF). Initially, the vegetation types were characterized according to their age and estimated species richness. Linear and exponential functions were applied to evaluate if higher taxa can be used as surrogates and correlated with the Pearson coefficient. In total, 180 species distributed in 60 genera were identified. The results showed that ant species richness was higher in intermediate fallows (88) and old secondary forest (76), and was lower in agroforestry systems (38) and mature riparian forest (35). The genus level was the best surrogate to estimate the ant's species richness across the different vegetation types, and explained 72-97 % (P < 0.001) of the total species variability. The results confirmed that the genus level is an excellent surrogate to estimate the ant's species richness in the region and that both fallows and agroforestry systems may contribute in the conservation of Eastern Amazon ant community. Abstract We tested the hypothesis of a negative relationship between vegetation characteristics and ant species richness in a Brazilian open vegetation habitat, called candeial. We set up arboreal pitfalls to sample arboreal ants and measured the following environmental variables, which were used as surrogate of environmental heterogeneity: tree richness, tree density, tree height, circumference at the base of the plants, and canopy cover. Only canopy cover had a negative effect on the arboreal ant species richness. Vegetation characteristics and plant species composition are probably homogeneous in candeial, which explains the lack of relationship between other environmental variables and ant richness. Open vegetation habitats harbor a large number of opportunistic and generalist species, besides specialist ants from habitats with high temperatures. An increase in canopy cover decreases sunlight incidence and may cause local microclimatic differences, which negatively affect the species richness of specialist ants from open areas. Canopy cover regulates the richness of arboreal ants in open areas, since only few ant species are able to colonize sites with dense vegetation; most species are present in sites with high temperature and luminosity. Within open vegetation habitats the relationship between vegetation characteristics and species richness seems to be the opposite from closed vegetation areas, like forests.


Resumo Nós testamos a hipótese de que há uma relação negativa entre as características da vegetação e a riqueza de espécies de formigas em habitats abertos como o candeial. Para isto, nós instalamos pitfalls arborícolas para a captura de formigas e mensuramos as seguintes variáveis ambientais: riqueza de árvores, densidade de árvores, altura de árvores, circunferência basal das plantas e cobertura de dossel. Somente a cobertura de dossel apresentou efeito negativo na riqueza de formigas arborícolas. Provavelmente, as características da vegetação e a composição de espécies de plantas são mais homogêneas no candeial, o que explica a ausência de relação entre a riqueza de formigas e as outras variáveis ambientais. Formações abertas abrigam um grande número de espécies oportunistas e generalistas, além de formigas especialistas de climas quentes. O aumento na cobertura de dossel diminui a incidência solar o que pode causar diferenças microclimáticas que afetam negativamente as espécies de formigas especialistas de hábitats abertos. A cobertura de dossel regula a riqueza de espécies de formigas arborícolas em áreas abertas e poucas espécies nestes locais estão aptas a colonizar locais com a vegetação densa. Assim, a maioria das espécies estão presentes em locais com alta temperatura e luminosidade. Em outras palavras, em hábitats de vegetação aberta a relação entre características da vegetação e a riqueza de espécies pode ser oposta em comparação ao que é encontrado em áreas que apresentam a vegetação mais fechada, como florestas.

AbstractAnts have been considered useful for bioindication because of their ecological characteristics. Nonetheless, among the characteristics of a bioindicator group, there must be a consistent and replicable response to disturbance. In this sense, divergent reactions have been found, even between taxons narrowly related. The objective of this work was to compare the diversity of the ant communities in three different temperate forests with different levels of disturbance, and to correlate their abundance and diversity of species, with that found in other arthropod communities of the same forests. The work was carried out in three municipalities in the North of the State of Mexico, where three types of different forests were identified by their degree of disturbance. These types include: 1) primary forest (PF), with typical species of a conserved forest; 2) mixed forest (MF), with species of a conserved forest and a reforestation effort; and 3) reforested forest (RF), with species used in reforestation efforts and indicative of disturbance. In each sample, an area of 2 500 m2 was selected. Each area had 16 pitfalls apiece and they were placed 10 m away from each other. Samples were collected twice; one from February through March 2009 (dry season) and another from August through September 2010 (rainy season), which produced a total of 192 traps. Obtained specimens were identified at the most taxonomically specific level. All data captured was transformed to √n + 0.5 and diversity index levels of Shannon and Simpson were calculated, as well as richness of species for ants, beetles, grasshoppers, true bugs, and spiders. The values of richness, diversity, and abundance were correlated with the Pearson coefficient, and to evaluate possible causal relationships between these, a path analysis was performed. Results suggested an important influence of the site over ant communities, and values of richness, abundance and diversity were correlated with the communities of spiders, beetles, grasshoppers and true bugs, but not for all the sites studied. Responses to environmental changes are not only on the numeric proportions of abundance, richness and diversity, but also in the indirect and casual ecological interactions. Finally, the data seems to indicate that the responses of the ants to the environmental changes are not necessarily reflected on other organisms’ communities, so the ants’ role as bioindicators can be limited. ResumenPor sus características ecológicas las hormigas se han considerado útiles para la bioindicación. Sin embargo, entre los rasgos de un grupo bioindicador, debe haber una respuesta consistente y repetible a la perturbación. En este sentido, se han encontrado respuestas divergentes, incluso entre taxones estrechamente relacionados. El objetivo de este trabajo fue comparar la diversidad de las comunidades de hormigas en tres tipos de bosque templado con diferente nivel de perturbación y correlacionar su abundancia, riqueza de especies y la diversidad con aquella que se encuentra en otras comunidades de artrópodos en los mismos bosques. El trabajo se realizó en tres localidades del norte del Estado de México donde fueron identificados tres tipos de bosque diferenciados por grado de disturbio: 1) bosque primario (PF), con especies típicas de un bosque conservado; 2) bosque mixto (MF) con especies de bosque conservado y propias de reforestación y 3) bosque reforestado (RF) con especies utilizadas en reforestación e indicadoras de pertubación. En cada tipo de bosque se seleccionó un área de 2 500 m2 donde fueron colocadas 16 trampas de caída con una separación de 10 m. Fueron realizadas dos recolectas una de febrero a marzo 2009 (estación seca) y otra de agosto a septiembre 2010 (estación lluviosa), lo que dio un total de 192 trampas. Los especímenes obtenidos fueron identificados al nivel taxonómico más específico posible. Todos los datos de las capturas fueron transformados a √n+0.5 y fueron calculados los índices de diversidad de Shannon y Simpson y riqueza de especies tanto para hormigas como para escarabajos, chapulines, chiches y arañas. Los valores de riqueza, diversidad y abundancia fueron correlacionados con el coeficiente de Pearson y para evaluar posibles relaciones causales entre estos se realizó un análisis de sendero. Los resultados sugieren una influencia importante del sitio sobre las comunidades de hormigas y sus valores de riqueza, abundancia y diversidad están correlacionadas con las comunidades de arañas, escarabajos, chapulines y chinches, pero no para todos los sitios estudiados. Las respuestas a los cambios ambientales no sólo están en las proporciones numéricas de la abundancia, riqueza y diversidad sino también en las interacciones ecológicas indirectas y causales. Los resultados sugieren que las respuestas de las hormigas a los cambios ambientales no necesariamente se reflejan sobre comunidades de otros organismos por lo que su papel como bioindicadores puede ser limitado.

AbstractFire occurrences are a common perturbation in Cerrado ecosystems, and may differently impact the local biodiversity. Arthropods are one of the taxa affected by fires, and among them, ants are known as good bioindicators. We aimed to evaluate the effect of anthropic fires on epigaeic and hypogaeic ant communities (species richness and composition) in Cerrado areas with different post-fire event recovery periods. We conducted the study in four Cerrado areas during two weeks of 2012 dry season: one unburned and three at different post-fire times (one month, one and two years). We sampled ants with pitfall traps in epigaeic and hypogaeic microhabitats. We collected 71 ant morpho-species from 25 genera. In the epigaeic microhabitat we sampled 56 morpho-species and 42 in the hypogaeic microhabitat. The area with the shortest recovery time presented lower epigaeic ant species richness (4.3 ± 2.00) in comparison to the other areas (8.1 ± 2.68 species on one year area; 10.3 ± 2.66 species on two years area; 10.4 ± 2.31 species on control area), but recovery time did not affect hypogaeic ant species richness. Regarding ant species composition, fire did not directly affect hypogaeic ant species, which remained the same even one month after fire event. However, two years were not enough to reestablish ant species composition in both microhabitats in relation to our control group samples. Our study is the first to assess anthropic fire effects upon epigaeic and hypogaeic ants communities; highlighting the importance of evaluating different microhabitats, to more accurately detect the effects of anthropic disturbances in biological communities. We concluded that ant communities are just partially affected by fire occurrences, and epigaeic assemblages are the most affected ones in comparison to hypogaeic ants. ResumenLos incendios son una alteración común en los ecosistemas del Cerrado brasileño y pueden causar diferentes efectos sobre la biodiversidad. Los artrópodos son uno de los taxones comúnmente afectados por el fuego, y entre ellos, se conoce que las hormigas son buenos bioindicadores. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar el efecto de los incendios antrópicos sobre las comunidades de hormigas epígeas e hipógeas (riqueza de especies y composición) en áreas del Cerrado en diferentes tiempos de recuperación. Para ello, el estudio se realizó en cuatro áreas del Cerrado durante la temporada seca del 2012: una área no quemada y otras tres áreas en diferentes momentos post-incendio (un mes, uno y dos años). Las hormigas fueron muestreadas utilizando trampas de caída en los microhábitats epígeo e hipógeo. Fueron recolectadas 71 morfo-especies de hormigas pertenecientes a 25 géneros. En el microhábitat epígeo recolectamos 56 morfo-especies y en el microhábitat hipógeo 42. El área con el menor tiempo de recuperación presentó una menor riqueza de especies de hormigas epígeas (4.3 ± 2.00) en comparación con las otras áreas (8.1 ± 2.68 especies en el área de un año; 10.3 ± 2.66 especies en el área de dos años; 10.4 ± 2.31 especies en el área de control), pero el tiempo de recuperación no afectó riqueza de especies de hormigas hipógeas. En cuanto a la composición de especies, el fuego no afectó directamente a las especies de hormigas hipógeas, la cual se mantuvo igual, incluso un mes después del incendio. Sin embargo, dos años no fueron suficientes para restablecer la composición de especies de hormigas en ambos microhábitats en relación con las muestras del área control. Nuestro estudio es el primero en evaluar los efectos del fuego antrópico sobre las comunidades de hormigas epígeas y hipógeas; se destaca la importancia de la evaluación de diferentes microhábitats para detectar con mayor precisión los efectos de las alteraciones antrópicas en las comunidades biológicas. Las comunidades de hormigas son solo parcialmente afectadas por incendios y las epígeas son las más perjudicadas. Además, este estudio proporciona conocimientos que pueden ayudar a la creación de programas de manejo de la vegetación del Cerrado, lo que permite conservar este importante bioma brasileño.

Abstract The ecology of seed dispersal is critical to understand the patterns of distribution and abundance of plant species. We investigated seed dispersal aspects associated with the high abundance of Buchenavia tomentosa in the Serra Azul State Park (PESA). We estimated fruit production and conducted fruit removal experiments. We carried out diurnal and nocturnal observations on frugivory as well as germination tests. Fruiting occurred in the dry season and totaled 1,365,015 ± 762,670 fruits.ha–1. B. tomentosa fruits were utilized by eight animal species. The lowland tapir (Tapirus terrestris) was considered the main seed disperser. Leafcutter ants (Atta laevigata and Atta sexdens) participated in the seed cleaning and occasionally dispersed seeds. The beetle Amblycerus insuturatus, blue-and-yellow macaw (Ara ararauna) and red-and-green macaw (Ara chloropterus) were considered pre-dispersal seed predators. The seeds manually cleaned presented higher germination rate (100%) and speed index (4.2 seeds.d–1) than that of seeds with pulp. Germination of seeds found in tapirs’feces was 40%, while for the seeds without pulp it was 25%. The high abundance of B. tomentosa in the cerrado of PESA may be due to massive fruit production, low rates of seed predation, and efficient seed dispersal by tapirs, occurring before the rains which promote germination and recruitment of this species.


Resumo A ecologia da dispersão de sementes é importante para entender a distribuição e abundância das espécies vegetais. Investigamos os fatores relacionados à elevada abundância de B. tomentosa no Parque Estadual da Serra Azul (PESA) avaliando aspectos da dispersão de sementes. Estimamos a produção de frutos e realizamos experimentos de remoção de frutos. Fizemos observações diurnas e noturnas sobre a frugivoria e testamos a germinação de sementes. A frutificação ocorreu na estação seca totalizando 1.365.015 ± 762.670 frutos.ha–1. Oito espécies de animais utilizaram frutos de B. tomentosa. Anta (Tapirus terrestris) foi considerada o principal dispersor. Saúvas (Atta laevigata e Atta sexdens) participaram na limpeza das sementes e como dispersores ocasionais. O besouro Amblycerus insuturatus, arara-canindé (Ara ararauna) e arara-vermelha (Ara chloropterus) foram considerados predadores pré-dispersão. Sementes despolpadas manualmente tiveram maior percentual (100%) e velocidade de geminação (4,2 sementes.dia–1) que aquelas com polpa. Sementes encontradas nas fezes de antas apresentaram 40,0% de germinação e sementes sem polpa 25,0%. A massiva produção de frutos, baixa taxa de predação de sementes, além da eficiente dispersão por antas, antes da estação chuvosa, favorecem o recrutamento e são fatores que contribuem de forma decisiva para a elevada abundância de B. tomentosa observada no cerrado do PESA.

This paper evaluates the post-dispersal artificial seed predation rates in two areas of the southeastern Amazon forest-savanna boundary, central Brazil. We conducted the survey in a disturbance regime controlled research site to verify if exists an edge effect in these rates and if the disturbance (in this case annual fire and no fire) affects seed predation. We placed 800 peanuts seeds in each area at regular distance intervals from the fragment`s edge. Data were analyzed by a likelihood ratio model selection in generalized linear models (GLM). The complete model (with effects from edge distance and site and its interaction) was significative (F3=4.43; p=0.005). Seeds had a larger predation rates in fragment’s interior in both areas, but in the controlled area (no disturbance) this effect was less linear. This suggests an edge effect for post-dispersal seed predation, and that disturbances might alter these effects. Even if we exclude the site effect (grouping both areas together) there is still a strong edge effect on seed predation rates (F3=32.679; p>0.001). We did not verify predator’s species in this study; however, the presence of several species of ants was extremely common in the seeds. The detection of an edge effect in only a short survey time suggests that there is heterogeneity in predation rates and that this variation might affect plant recruitment in fragmented areas of the Amazon forest. Henceforth, this seed predation should be taken in consideration in reforestation projects, where the main source of plants species is from seed distribution.


Este artigo avaliou a predação de sementes pós-dispersão em duas áreas da borda entre a Amazônia e o Cerrado, no Brasil central. O experimento foi realizado em uma área de estudos controlados, no qual foi verificada a existência de um efeito de borda na predação de sementes e se a existência de distúrbio (área sujeita a fogo anual e área controle) afeta estes valores. Foram colocadas 800 sementes de amendoim em cada uma das duas áreas em distância regulares da borda do fragmento. Os dados obtidos foram analisados através de seleção de modelos por verossimilhança em modelos lineares generalizados (GLM). O modelo completo (com efeitos da distância da borda e da área amostrada com suas interações) foi significativo (F3=4,43; p=0,005). As sementes apresentaram uma maior taxa de predação no interior do fragmento em relação a sua borda em ambas as áreas, mas na área controle (sem distúrbio), o efeito foi menos linear. Isto sugere que existe um efeito de borda para a predação de sementes, e que distúrbios podem alterar estes efeitos. Mesmo se o efeito das áreas for removido (considerando ambas as áreas em conjunto), o efeito de borda sobre a predação de sementes persiste (F3=32,679; p>0,001). Não foram verificadas diretamente as espécies de predadores neste estudo, no entanto a presença de algumas espécies de formigas nas sementes foi extremamente comum. A detecção deste efeito de borda em um espaço de tempo curto sugere que existe uma heterogeneidade nas taxas de predação e que esta variação pode afetar o recrutamento vegetal em áreas fragmentadas da floresta amazônica. Portanto, este efeito sobre a predação de sementes deve ser levado em consideração em projetos de reflorestamento, nos quais a principal fonte de espécies vegetais seja através da distribuição de sementes.

ABSTRACT

Interaction among species, like ants and plants through extrafloral nectaries (EFNs), are important components of ecological communities’ evolution. However, the effect of human disturbance on such specific interactions and its ecological consequences is poorly understood. This study evaluated the outcomes of mutualism between ants and the EFN-bearing plant Stachytarpheta glabra under anthropogenic disturbance. We compared the arthropod fauna composition between two groups of twenty plant individuals, one in an area disturbed by human activities and one in a preserved area. We also check the plant investment in herbivory defense and the consequential leaf damage by herbivore. Our results indicate that such disturbances cause simplification of the associated fauna and lack of proper ant mutualist. This led to four times more herbivory on plants of disturbed areas, despite the equal amount of EFN and ant visitors and low abundance of herbivores. The high pressure of herbivory may difficult the re-establishment of S. glabra, an important pioneer species in ferruginous fields, therefore it may affect resilience of this fragile ecological community.


As interações entre espécies, como por exemplo formigas e plantas através de nectários extraflorais (NEFs), são importantes componentes na evolução das comunidades. Entretanto, pouco é conhecido sobre os efeitos dos impactos antrópicos em interações específicas e suas consequências ecológicas. Este estudo avaliou os resultados do mutualismo entre formigas e NEF em Stachytarpheta glabra em área impactada pela atividade humana. Nós comparamos a composição e estrutura da fauna de artrópodes, em quarenta plantas de dois grupos, um impactado por atividades humanas e o outro preservado. Nós também avaliamos o investimento da planta em defesas contra herbívoros e os danos foliares causados por herbívoros. Nossos resultados indicam que os distúrbios causam a simplificação da fauna associada e a ausência de uma formiga mutualista anti-herbívoros. Isto leva a quatro vezes mais herbivoria nas plantas da área impactada, a despeito da mesma quantidade encontrada para NEF e formigas visitantes. A grande pressão de herbivoria pode dificultar o reestabelecimento de S. glabra, uma espécie pioneira importante nos campos ferruginosos, dessa forma, afetando a resiliência dessa comunidade ecológica ameaçada.

ABSTRACT

Wetland areas in the Brazilian Cerrado, known as “veredas”, represent ecosystems formed on sandy soils with high concentrations of peat, and are responsible for the recharge of aquiferous reservoirs. They are currently under threat by various human activities, most notably the clearing of vegetation for Eucalyptus plantations. Despite their ecological importance and high conservation value, little is known about the actual effects of human disturbance on the animal community. To assess how habitat within different veredas, and plantations surrounding them affect ant assemblages, we selected four independent vereda locations, two being impacted by Eucalyptus monoculture (one younger and one mature plantation) and two controls, where the wetland was surrounded by cerrado vegetation. Ant sampling was conducted in May 2010 (dry season) using three complementary methods, namely baits, pitfall traps, and hand collection, in the wetland and in the surrounding habitats. A total of 7,575 ants were sampled, belonging to seven subfamilies, 32 genera and 124 species. Ant species richness and abundance did not differ between vereda locations, but did between the habitats. When impacted by the monoculture, ant species richness and abundance decreased in wetlands, but were less affected in the cerrado habitat. Ant species composition differed between the three habitats and between vereda locations. Eucalyptus plantations had an ant species composition defined by high dominance of Pheidole sp. and Solenopsis invicta, while natural habitats were defined by Camponotus and Crematogaster species. Atta sexdens was strictly confined to native habitats of non-impacted “veredas”. Eucalyptus monocultures require high quantities of water in the early stages, which may have caused a decrease in groundwater level in the wetland, allowing hypogeic ants such as Labidus praedator to colonise this habitat.


O ecossistema ribeirinho do Cerrado brasileiro, é conhecido como “vereda”, e é formado em solos arenosos com altas concentrações de turfa, além de serem responsáveis pela recarga dos reservatórios dos aquíferos. Atualmente, as veredas estão sob ameaça de várias atividades humanas, especialmente a supressão da vegetação para plantio de Eucalyptus. Apesar de sua importância ecológica e elevado valor na conservação, pouco se sabe sobre os efeitos das perturbações humanas sobre a comunidade de animais. Para avaliar como que habitats em diferentes veredas e as plantações circundantes afetam a assembleia de formigas, foram selecionadas quatro “veredas” independentes, sendo duas impactadas pela monocultura de eucalipto (uma jovem e uma madura) e duas controles com a planície de inundação circundada por vegetação de cerrado. A coleta das formigas foi realizada em Maio de 2010 (estação seca) por meio de três métodos complementares, iscas atrativas, armadilhas de pitfall e coleta direta, no habitat de planície alagada, e na área circundante. Foi amostrado um total de 7.575 formigas, pertencentes a sete subfamílias, 32 gêneros e 124 espécies. A riqueza e abundância de formigas não diferiram entre as localidades “veredas”, mas sim entre os habitats. Quando impactados pela monocultura, a abundância e a riqueza diminuem nas planícies de inundação, mas os habitats de cerrado foram menos afetados. As plantações de eucalipto têm sua composição de espécies de formigas definida pela alta dominância de Pheidole sp. e Solenopsis invicta, enquanto os habitats naturais foram definidos por espécies de Camponotus e Crematogaster. Atta sexdens foi estritamente relacionada à habitats nativos de “veredas” preservadas. A monocultura de eucalipto requer grandes quantidades de água nos estágios iniciais, o que pode ter provocado a queda no nível do lençol freático nas planícies alagadas, permitindo a colonização deste habitat por espécies de formigas de hábitos hipógeos, como Labidus praedator.

Nestmate recognition is fundamental for the cohesiveness of the colony in social insects. Acromyrmex landolti is a higher Attini, a leaf-cutter ant with largest nest and morphological castes. We studied the location of the recognition signal of A. landolti on the whole ant body, the isolation effect on the capacity of nestmaterecognition, and the role of the mandibular (MG) and post-pharyngeal glands (PPG) as putative sources for chemical recognition signals in this species. We performed behavioral bioassays and chemical analyses of MG and PPG glands; MG volatiles in different castes were also characterized. In order to determine the occurrence of nestmate recognition signals, behavioral tests were performed for which the whole body, body parts or gland extracts from a nestmate and an alien worker ant, were placed on the central axis of an active field trail. Besides, the isolation effect of the nestmate chemical signal persistence was evaluated by repeating the experiments with whole ant bodies after 12h, 24h and 48h of isolation. The agonistic behavior of the ants on the trail was classified as inspection, threatening and biting. Gland volatiles were obtained by headspace solid phase microextraction, and PPG by solid sample analyses; and chemical analyses were performed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Workers performed agonistic behaviors more frequently towards non-nestmate whole bodies, body parts and gland extracts, primarily those from the post-pharyngeal glands. Nestmate thoraces odorized with alien extracts were also recognized from aliens. Nestmate recognition ability persists for 12h and 24h after isolation, but decreases after 48h, suggesting that the chemical signal changes over time. Inter-colonial chemical analyses showed no differences in the PPG hydrocarbon profiles, while the relative proportions of MG compounds showed significant differences between colonies. These results showed that nestmate recognition was achieved by MG volatiles. Possibly, the PPG secretion works as a matrix that absorbs MG volatiles. We report, for the first time, some mandibular gland compounds for the genus Acromyrmex and for the tribe Attini group.


El reconocimiento de compañeras de nido es fundamental para la cohesión de la colonia en los insectos sociales. Las señales de reconocimiento de compañeras en Acromyrmex landolti fueron estudiadas mediante bioensayos de comportamiento y análisis químicos de los componentes de la glándula mandibular (GM) y postfaríngea (GPF). Los bioensayos de comportamiento fueron realizados usando cuerpos completos de hormigas, partes del cuerpo y extractos glandulares de GM y GPF de una compañera de nido y una intrusa en el centro de una trilla activa. Los comportamientos agonísticos de las obreras se clasificaron en exploración, ataque y mordida. Las obreras se mostraron más agresivas hacia los cuerpos completos, partes del cuerpo y extractos glandulares de las intrusas que hacia los de las compañeras de nido. Los volátiles glandulares se obtuvieron mediante la técnica de espacio en cabeza con microextracción en fase sólida, y los hidrocarburos de la PPG por análisis de muestra sólida. Se encontró que los volátiles de la GM conforman la señal de reconocimiento. No se encontraron diferencias intercoloniales para los volátiles de la GM. Posiblemente los hidrocarburos cuticulares actúan como una matriz que absorbe volátiles de la GM.

Simplification of natural habitats leads to a modification of the community associated with a host plant. Pequi trees (Caryocar brasiliense) are common to find in central Brazil, especially in the middle of monocultures, such as soy, corn, pasturelands or Eucalyptus plantations. On this scenario we hypothesized that habitat modification differentially affects the diversity of ants and herbivore insects associated with this species. The aim of the work was to test if C. brasiliense trees located in human modified habitats, support a lower species richness and abundance of ants, and a greater species richness and abundance of insect herbivores, compared to preserved cerrado habitats. The study was conducted in a Cerrado area located in Northern Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Ants and herbivore insects were collected monthly during 2005 using beating technique. The results showed that ant species richness was higher in pequi trees located in preserved Cerrado, followed by trees in pastureland and Eucalyptus plantation, respectively. The ant abundance was lower in the Eucalyptus plantation but no difference in ant abundance was observed between trees in pastureland and the preserved Cerrado. Moreover, herbivore insects exhibited lower number of species and individuals in trees located in the preserved Cerrado than in the pastureland and Eucalyptus plantation. We concluded that habitats simplified by human activities may result in diversity loss and may change species interactions.


La simplificación de los hábitats naturales conduce a una modificación de la comunidad asociada con una planta huésped. En la región central de Brasil es muy común encontrar árboles aislados de “pequi” (Caryocar brasiliense) en medio de monocultivos de soya, maíz, pastos o plantaciones de eucalipto. Bajo este escenario, nosotros predecimos que la modificación del hábitat afecta diferencialmente la diversidad de hormigas y herbívoros asociados a árboles de “pequi”. El objetivo de este artículo fue determinar que árboles de “pequi” localizados en hábitats modificados por actividades humanas (i.e. pastizales y plantaciones de Eucalyptus), soportan una menor abundancia y riqueza de especies de hormigas. Por el contrario, se espera una mayor abundancia y riqueza de especies de herbívoros en hábitats modificados. Este estudio fue realizado en un área de Cerrado (sabana brasileña) localizado en el Norte del estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil. Las hormigas y los herbívoros fueron muestreados usando técnicas de golpe. La riqueza de especies de hormigas fue mayor en árboles de “pequi” localizados en áreas preservadas de Cerrado, seguida por árboles de pastizales y finalmente por árboles de plantaciones de Eucalyptus. La abundancia de hormigas fue menor en plantaciones de Eucalyptus, pero no hubo diferencias en la abundancia de hormigas entre árboles de pastizales y áreas preservadas de cerrado. Por otra parte, el número de especies de insectos herbívoros fue menor en árboles de áreas preservadas de Cerrado que en pastizales y plantaciones de Eucalyptus. Concluimos que las actividades humanas reducen la complejidad del hábitat resultando en la pérdida de la diversidad de insectos y procesos ecológicos.

Animal-plant interactions are important for the recovery of diversity and processes in secondary forests, which increasingly dominate the tropical landscape. We used a combination of observational and experimental approaches to study the interactions of ants with diaspores across a successional gradient of forests in Southern Brazil, from August 2007 to April 2008. In addition to diaspore removal rates, we assessed the species richness, diversity and behaviour of ants interacting with diaspores, in three replicated sites of four successional stages of forests. We recorded 22 ant species interacting with diaspores (an estimated 15% of the total species pool in the region). Species richness and diversity did not differ among successional stages but the behaviour of ants towards diaspores changed with the age of secondary forests. In old successional stages the removal of entire diaspores was more common than in young successional stages of forests. Concordantly, diaspore removal rates were lowest in the youngest successional stage of secondary forests and increased with the age of forests. These results indicate that ant-diaspore interactions in secondary forests are disturbed and lower removal rates in secondary forests are likely to constrain the recruitment of plant populations during secondary succession. Las interacciones entre animales y plantas son importantes para la recuperación de la diversidad y los procesos en los bosques secundarios, los cuales cada vez más tienden a dominar el paisaje tropical. Nosotros utilizamos una combinación de métodos experimentales y observaciones para estudiar las interacciones entre hormigas y diásporas a través de un gradiente de sucesión en los bosques del sur de Brasil, entre agosto 2007 y abril 2008. Además de las tasas de eliminación de diásporas, evaluamos la riqueza de especies, la diversidad y el comportamiento de las hormigas que interactúan con las diásporas, con tres repeticiones por sitio de cuatro estadios de sucesión del bosque. Se registraron 22 especies de hormigas que interactúan con diásporas (se estima un 15% del total de especies en la región). La riqueza y diversidad de especies no varió entre las etapas de sucesión, pero el comportamiento de las hormigas hacia las diásporas cambio con la edad de los bosques secundarios. En las etapas sucesionales avanzadas del bosque la eliminación de diásporas fue más común que en las etapas tempranas. En concordancia, las tasas de eliminación de diásporas fueron menores en la etapa más temprana de la sucesión de bosques secundarios y aumenta con la edad de los mismos. Estos resultados indican que las interacciones hormigasdiásporas en los bosques secundarios son alteradas y las menores tasas de extracción en los bosques secundarios es probable que limiten el reclutamiento de las poblaciones de plantas durante la sucesión secundaria.

The semi-arid Caatinga is the fourth largest biome of Brazil, which biota still remains one of the most poorly known, especially with regard to invertebrate groups. In this study, a ground-foraging ant assemblage was surveyed during one year and the effect of rainfall on pitfall trapping was assessed. The study was performed in an area located in the municipality of Pentecoste (3º48’ S - 39º20’ W), in the State of Ceará. A 200m transect with 20 equidistant sampling points was established. Transect sampling was performed once a month during 12 months, over the period August 2008-August 2009. At each sampling point, a pitfall trap partially filled with a mixture of ethanol and monoethylene glycol was placed at the beginning of each month and remained in the field for seven days. 39 species belonging to six subfamilies and 19 genera, plus two unidentified species, were collected, with Pheidole (10 spp.) and Camponotus (8 spp.) being the taxa with the most species. 23 species were frequent, being found in more than 50% of the 12 transect samplings. Five species had an intermediate frequency (25 to 50%), while 13 were relatively infrequent (less than 25%). Most of the species (22) showed low occurrence, being found in less than 10% of the 240 samples (20 samples each month, during 12 months). Only five species were collected in more than 50% of the samples, those species being also responsible for most of the total abundance (number of captured individuals of all species) observed each month. The speciesaccumulation curves (observed and estimated) indicated that sampling sufficiency was attained, and that about 92% of the estimated ground-foraging ant fauna had been collected. 40 and 29 species were collected in the dry and rainy season, respectively, with monthly species richness ranging from 13 to 28. The total ant abundance showed a drastic decrease during the rainy season, and a negative linear correlation was found between rainfall and total ant abundance (R2=0.68). A similar negative linear correlation was found for species occurrences against rainfall (R2=0.71), and for mean number of species per pitfall trap against rainfall (R2=0.71). However, some species showed equal abundance, occurrence and mean number of individuals per pitfall trap in both seasons, while others showed a much higher abundance and occurrence during the rainy season. Pitfall trapping as a method to sample ground-foraging ant assemblage of the Caatinga biome and potential factors responsible for lower pitfall trap performance during rainy season are discussed. La Caatinga semiárida es el cuarto bioma más grande de Brasil. Pese a ello, es también el bioma brasileño cuya biota continúa siendo la más pobremente estudiada, especialmente en lo que se refiere a grupos de invertebrados. En este estudio se examinó durante un año el grupo de hormigas que forrajean en el suelo de un área de Caatinga y se evaluó el efecto de la lluvia sobre las trampas de caída. El estudio se llevó a cabo en un área del municipio de Pentecoste (3º48’ S - 39º20’ W), estado de Ceará. Se estableció un transecto de 200m con 20 puntos de muestreo equidistantes. El muestreo del transecto se realizó mensualmente durante 12 meses, entre Agosto 2008-Agosto 2009. En cada punto de muestreo se colocó al principio de cada mes una trampa de caída parcialmente llena con una mezcla de etanol y monoetilenglicol y se mantuvo en el campo durante siete días. Se recogieron 39 especies pertenecientes a seis subfamilias y 19 géneros, además de dos especies sin identificar, siendo Pheidole (10 spp) y Camponotus (8 spp) los taxones con más especies. Veintitrés especies fueron frecuentes, se registraron en más del 50% de los 12 transectos muestreados. Cinco especies tuvieron una frecuencia intermedia (25 a 50%), mientras 13 fueron relativamente infrecuentes (menos del 25%). La mayoría de las especies (22) mostraron una presencia baja, encontrándose en menos del 10% de las 240 muestras (20 muestras cada mes durante 12 meses). Sólo cinco especies fueron recogidas en más del 50% de las muestras, fueron además responsables de casi toda la abundancia total (número de individuos capturados de todas las especies) mensual. Las curvas de acumulación de especies (observadas y estimadas) indicaron que se consiguió un muestreo suficiente y que se había recogido cerca del 92% de la fauna estimada de hormigas terrícolas forrajeras. Se recogieron 40 y 29 especies durante las estaciones seca y lluviosa, respectivamente, con una riqueza de especies mensual entre 13 y 28. La abundancia total de especies mostró una disminución drástica durante la estación de lluvias, y se encontró una correlación linear negativa entre la pluviosidad y la abundancia total de hormigas (R2=0.68). Una correlación linear negativa similar se encontró entre la ocurrencia de especies y la pluviosidad (R2=0.71), y entre el número medio de especies por trampa de caída y la pluviosidad (R2=0.71). Sin embargo, mientras se observó que algunas especies tenían la misma abundancia, presencia, y número medio de individuos por trampa de caída en ambas estaciones, otras tenían una abundancia y presencia mucho mayor durante la estación lluviosa. Se discute el uso de trampas de caída como método para muestrear el grupo de hormigas que forrajean en el suelo del bioma de la Caatinga, así como los factores potenciales responsables del rendimiento más bajo de las trampas de caída durante la estación lluviosa.

Although seed dispersal by ants might reduce seed predation near the parent plants, predation on discarded seeds clustered on nest refuse piles may reduce any initial benefit provided by seed removal. Here we examine the fate of Croton sonderianus seeds that were discarded by Pheidole fallax Mayr ants on their nest refuses in caatinga vegetation of northeast Brazil. We collected all seeds discarded in refuse piles of 20 nests and within a radius of 50 cm from their borders, and examined them for evidence of predation. A total of 3,017 seeds were recorded either located in the P. fallax refuse piles (89.1 percent) or nest vicinity (10.9 percent). Predation was three fold higher in nest vicinity as compared to refuse piles. By removing seeds from beneath parent plants and relocating then to refuse piles, P. fallax is possibly providing double protection services for C. sonderianus seeds. Our findings represent the first evidence for predator-avoidance as benefit for plants resulting from ant seed-dispersal in the neotropics.

ABSTRACT

The authors report a massive attack by Pseudomyrmex ants on a human who touched a Triplaria - novice tree (Triplaris spp). The ants naturally live in these trees and their stings cause intense pain and discrete to moderate local inflammation. The problem is common in some Brazilian regions and can be prevented by identifying the trees.


É descrito um ataque maciço de formigas do gênero Pseudomyrmex a um humano que tocou uma árvore-de-novato (Triplaris spp). As formigas vivem naturalmente nestas árvores e as picadas causam dor intensa e inflamação local. O problema é comum em certas regiões do Brasil e pode ser prevenido pela identificação das árvores.

ABSTRACT

The Energetic Equivalence Rule (EER) states that species tend to consume energy independent of their body size. Here, the EER was tested for litter ants using body size and abundance data. Rainforest ants were obtained using pitfall traps and Winkler extractor. The abundance data from the Winkler extractions confirmed the EER, while the pitfall traps rejected it. Combination of abundance from pitfall catches and Winkler extractions either confirmed or rejected the EER. Further studies should focus on the interaction between sampling techniques and habitat types in the test of EER for ant communities.


A regra de equivalência energética (REE) propõe que o uso de energia independe do tamanho corporal da espécie. O tamanho e a abundância de formigas da serapilheira, coletadas em floresta ombrófila usando armadilhas pitfall e extrator de Winkler, foram usados no teste da REE. Os dados de abundância obtidos da extração de Winkler confirmaram a REE, enquanto os dados provenientes das armadilhas pitfall rejeitaram. A combinação das abundâncias estimadas pelas duas técnicas tanto aceitou quanto rejeitou a REE. Estudos posteriores deveriam focar a interação entre a técnica de coleta e o tipo de habitat no teste da REE para comunidades de formigas.

ABSTRACT

Ants can nest in a wide variety of substracts. This paper shows Syagrus romanzoffiana seed utilization by ants in an Atlantic secondary forest. We report 29 seeds occupied by small-bodied ants, with 27 of them showing at least two ant development stages. Although a large number of seeds were sampled, a low level of ant occupation was observed.


As formigas podem nidificar em uma ampla variedade de substratos. Este estudo relata o uso das sementes de Syagrus romanzoffiana em floresta atlântica secundária, como local para nidificação de formigas. Foram encontradas 29 sementes ocupadas por formigas de pequeno porte, sendo que 27 delas apresentaram pelo menos dois estágios de desenvolvimento de formigas. A taxa de ocupação foi baixa apesar de as sementes serem abundantes.

São descritas pela primeira vez injúrias causadas por Solenopsis saevissima F Smith em árvores de paricá, Schizolobium amazonicum, em Dom Eliseu, PA. Essa formiga ataca folhas e o fuste, onde são abertos orifícios e galerias, até a região apical da planta. Brotos terminais e novas brotações também são atacados e destruídos, prejudicando a formação de um tronco retilíneo e uniforme para comercialização. Ninhos arborícolas construídos pelas formigas foram observados em algumas plantas.


Injuries by Solenopsis saevissima F Smith in paricá (Schizolobium amazonicum) trees are described for the first time in Dom Eliseu County, Pará State, Brazil. This ant damages leaves and the shaft where holes and galleries are opened up to the plant shoot. Terminal and new shoots are attacked and destroyed, harming the development of upright and uniform trunks for commercialization. Arboreal nests constructed by this ant were also observed in some plants.

Studies on ant communities in agroecosystems have contributed to the knowledge of the effect of agricultural activities on biological communities. The aim of this study is to explain the effect of soil use on ant communities. We tested the hypothesis that there was a decrease in ant species richness and a change in the species composition at habitats with more intense soil use. We collected ants using sardine baits, subterranean traps and direct sampling at four habitats with different soil use (secundary forest, Acacia forestry, initial stage of succession and mixed crops). The ant species richness did not decrease with intensity of soil use. In successional habitat the species numbers collected using sardine baits and subterranean traps were significantly different. Species composition of communities had a pronounced variation, with the epigaeic and hypogaeic ant faunas of the habitat with high intense soil use (mixed crops) had low similarity with ant communities of the three other habitats. The predator species were restricted to habitats with low intensity of soil use. Then, species composition could better reflect the functional changes on ant communities than species richness. Our data can help to choose the component of ant community that better reflect the response of biodiversity to agricultural impacts.


Estudos sobre as comunidades de formigas em agroecossistemas têm contribuído para o conhecimento do efeito das práticas agrícolas sobre as comunidades biológicas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito do uso do solo nas comunidades de formigas. Foi testada a hipótese de que há um decréscimo na riqueza de espécies de formigas e uma mudança na composição de espécies em habitats com uso mais intenso do solo. As formigas foram amostradas com iscas de sardinhas, armadilhas subterrâneas e por coleta direta em quatro habitats com diferentes usos do solo (mata secundária, início de sucessão vegetal, reflorestamento com Acacia e cultivo misto). A riqueza não diminuiu com a intensidade de uso do solo. Na área em início de sucessão vegetal, o número de espécies coletadas por iscas de sardinha foi significativamente diferente do obtido pelas armadilhas subterrâneas. A composição de espécies teve uma pronunciada variação, sendo que a fauna de formigas epigéica e hipogéica do habitat com maior intensidade de uso do solo (cultivo misto) mostrou baixa similaridade com as comunidades de formigas dos outros três habitats. As espécies predadoras restringiram-se aos habitats com baixa intensidade de uso do solo (mata secundária e sucessão vegetal). Assim, a composição de espécies refletiu melhor as mudanças funcionais nas comunidades de formigas ao uso do solo do que a riqueza de espécies. Com o objetivo de estimar a taxa de exploração dos recursos florais de Sparattosperma leucanthum (Vell.) K. Schum. e a interação com seus visitantes florais na polinização, foram amostradas as visitas realizadas por flor, agrupadas segundo o tipo de visitação e o recurso coletado, registrando-se o comportamento do visitante durante o forrageamento às flores. Os visitantes florais foram agrupados em sete guildas, em ordem decrescente de benefício à polinização das flores de S. leucanthum: polinizador efetivo, polinizador casual, polinizador endogâmico, visitante generalista, visitante furtador, formiga furtadora-pilhadora e visitante pilhador. Foram constatadas 48,2 ± 8,84 visitas por flor, sendo que a guilda polinizador efetivo respondeu por 16,1 ± 8,43 (33,3 por cento) visitas por flor. Quase 50 por cento das visitas resultaram no furto ou pilhagem de néctar, representando prejuízos à reprodução de S. leucanthum, como a redução da atratividade aos polinizadores e o dano aos tecidos reprodutivos da flor. Trigona spinipes (Fabr.) (Hymenoptera: Apidae) foi considerada a espécie mais prejudicial devido à alta freqüência de pilhagem e de forrageamento, enquanto Bombus sp1 foi provavelmente a espécie que mais polinizou flores de S. leucanthum através da polinização cruzada.


Aiming to estimate the rate of exploitation of the floral resources of Sparattosperma leucanthum (Vell.) K. Schum. as well as the interaction with their floral visitors in the pollination, the number of visits by flower was sampled, according to the type of visitation, the collected resource and the visitor's behavior during the forage for flowers. The floral visitors were grouped into seven guilds, organized in decreasing order of benefit to the S. leucanthum flower's pollination: effective pollinator, occasional pollinator, endogamic pollinator, generalist visitor, thievery visitor, thievery-pillager ant and pillager visitor. The total of 48.2 ± 8.84 visits were recorded by flower. Nearly 50 percent of the visits resulted in nectar thief or pillage, which posed some problems to the reproduction of S. leucanthum, such as the drop in the attractiveness to pollinators and the harm to the flower's reproductive tissues. Trigona spinipes (Fabr.) (Hymenoptera: Apidae) was considered the most harmful species owing to the high frequency of pillage and forage. Bombus sp1, however, was probably the species that pollinated S. lecanthum flowers the most, making use of the crossed pollination.
