ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

History of medicine and of dermatology tend to analyze what happened in these disciplines in a given time and place. Contributions of relevant leaders are studied carefully and their appropriate value to knowledge is determined. This is fundamental to understand present knowledge and what might be excepted in the future. Yet, there is an additional perspective, namely, the relationships between the above and historical phenomena in their wider sense. Particularly, the correlation between politics, economy, psychohistory and medicine, evolution of medical knowledge does not occur in a vacuum. This presentation provides examples of this viewpoint and how knowledge of history makes clear the development of medicine and vice-versa. Some emphasis is made on history and development of dermatology; but rather as an illustration of the overall philosophic point o view of the writer than as an analysis of the history of dermatology in itself. In the end one may summarize metaphorically this viewpoint by stating that while the microscope and the dermatoscope are very important, the telescope is vital for integral knowledge

ABSTRACT

In this special edition in celebration of the centennial of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology, the authors take a retrospective look at printed Brazilian dermatology from the very beginning onward, showing evidence of descriptive dermatology with rich discussions, illustrations and advertisements of medications much used at the time, such as bismuth for the treatment of syphilis, before the discovery of penicillin. ABSTRACT

At the beginning of the twentieth century, Dermatology’s teaching was more complex than today, heavily based on fine semiology. During the last centuries, the art of moulage preparation evolved from 2-dimensional images in black and white to 3-dimensional figures with color andrelief, realistic representations of diseased parts of the human body, essential in a morphological and descriptive discipline. The technique of wax figures in Dermatology began in the nineteenth century in France, at St. Louis Hospital. Subsequently, Olavide created a wax museum at San Juan de Dios Hospital in Spain. In Chile, wax moulages of syphilis and other sexually transmitted diseases were used for the teaching of Dermatology by the National Health Service. The moulages were carved by Mrs. Anita Lagarrigue and designed by Professor Dr Luis Prunés (Chair of Dermatology at Saint Vincent de Paul Hospital) in the 1940’s. Until today, we have found 15 wax moulages, partially preserved in wooden and glass boxes in the Dermatology Department at the Clinical Hospital of the University of Chile (former Saint Vincent de Paul Hospital). This wax figures collection represents a significant work of art and reflects a veryimportant part of the history of Chilean Dermatology.
