ABSTRACT

The projections of mechanosensory hairs located on the dorsal and lateral head of the adult haematophagous bug Triatoma infestans were analyzed by means of cobalt filling. Axons run into the anterior and posterior tegumentary nerve and project through the brain to the ventral nerve cord. The fibres are small in diameter and run as a fascicle. Some branches run into suboesophageal and prothoracic centres; others run as far as to the mesothoracic ganglion. These sensory projections resemble that of wind-sensitive head hairs of the locust. The functional role of this sensory system in this species is discussed.

ABSTRACT

Non-specific cholinesterase (ChE) activity was demonstrated in the Meissner and lamellated corpuscles of rats, through light and transmission electron microscopy observations. A intense cholinesterase activity was noted in the sensory nerve endings. reaction products were present in the interlamellar spaces between neighbouring lamellae and some in caveolae of the lamella cell plasma membrane. No reaction products were observed within the axon terminals. Since the lamellaeof the sensory corpuscles contain an intense ChE activity, it was suggested that the enzyme would have a role in the function of the mechanoreceptors.

ABSTRACT

Se estudió la ultraestructura de los corpúsculos de Merkel en la mucosa del labio inferior del labio de los monos Cebus apella. Las células de Merkel se localizan en la base de la red epitelial adyacente e intimamente asociada con una o dos terminaciones nerviosas intra-epiteliales. Las células de Merkel poseen un núcleo dentado, caracterizado por la concentración de numerosos gránulos denso-teñidos con un rango que varía de 30 a 80 nm de diámetro. Las protrusiones citoplasmáticas de las células de Merkel se extienden en los espacios intercelulares, conteniendo microfilamentos paralelos orientados longitudinalmente. Se observan uniones tipo desmosomas entre el axón terminal y las células de Merkel y queratinocitos adyacentes. El axón terminal muestra la presencia de numerosas mitocondrias y vesículas claras que miden de 30 a 50 nm de diámetro. Nuestros hallazgos sugieren que la protrusión citoplasmática puede servir para detectar el movimiento de queratinocitos adyacentes y también relaciona la capa epitelial con el tejido conectivo de la lámina basal

ABSTRACT

A atividade de colinesterase inespecífica foi demonstrada em corpúsculos lamelares sensitivos do lábio de ratos através da microscopia óptica e eletrônica de transmissäo, utilizando o método de Karnovsky & Roots. A atividade colinesterásica estava presente no espaço interlamelar entre lamelas sucessivas, bem como no espaço entre o axônio terminal e a lamela adjacente. Produtos de reaçäo da atividade colinesterásica eram bem evidentes em algumas cavéolas da membrana plasmática da célula lamelar e em cisternas do retículo endoplasmático granular, bem como na membrana nuclear. Produtos inespecíficos de reaçäo foram detectados dentro do axônio terminal. Esses dados mostram que os corpúsculos lamelares do lábio de ratos, como outros mecanorreceptores, apresentam intensa atividade colinesterásica, a qual é associada principalmente com as células lamelares. Pode-se dizer que a histoquímica de colinesterase é útil para detectar os mecanorreceptores. A significância funcional da colinesterase em mecanorreceptores é discutida
