ABSTRACT

The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of season and various housing systems on behavioral i.e. sitting, standing, walking and physiological i.e. respiratory rate (RR), rectal temperature (RT), time of sexual libido (TSL) attributes of local breed of rabbits reared in Southern Punjab, Pakistan. Adult rabbits (n = 40) of 6 month to 1 year old were divided into two groups (n = 20 / group). Group I was placed under traditional colony system in the soil while group II was kept under modern cage system. Sitting and standing was significantly (p ≤ 0.05) higher during summer and winter respectively. The RR and RT were significantly (p ≤ 0.05) higher in summer as compared to other study seasons. Standing behavior was significantly (p ≤ 0.05) higher in caged rabbits as compared to colony-reared ones. Statistically higher (p ≤ 0.05) TSL value was observed in summer as compared to other three study seasons. From this study it is concluded that rabbit's behavioral and physiological traits are significantly affected by season and housing systems. We concluded that rabbits show better physio-behavioral performance in autumn and winter season while summer stress negatively affects physiology and behavior under caged-system. This study could contribute new aspects of behavioral and physiological processes in local breed of rabbits due to different seasons and housing systems.

ABSTRACT

Rabbits have been used as an experimental model in many studies. These studies are important for not only for veterinary clinicians, but also for researchers in different elds. The aim of this research was to describe gross morphological measurement, shape and arterial supply of the adrenal glands in healthy New Zealand rabbits. Dissections were performed in 30 adult rabbits, 15 males and 15 females, without macroscopic adrenal pathology. Adrenal measurements were made with a digital caliper: length, width, and thickness. The origin of the adrenal arteries was also determined. Both adrenal glands were localized cranially to the respective kidneys. The mean of the right adrenal gland was 0.88 cm length, 0.42 cm width and 0.16 cm thickness; the left gland measured 0.72 cm, 0.46 cm, and 0.17 cm, respectively. The right gland was significantly more elongated than the left (p = 0.0003) and the means of the measurements did not differ between sexes. Most of the right adrenal glands had a piriform shape (73.3%), whereas most of the left gland exhibited a bean-shaped aspect (60.0%). The arterial supply was found to arise from different arteries:  lumbar, aorta, renal, caudal mesenteric, and testicular or ovarian. Comparatively, the descriptions of shape, position and arterial irrigation of the adrenal gland in rabbits are similar to those available in rodents. The data from the pres

ABSTRACT

The volume-controlled mechanical ventilation and spontaneous ventilation, through haemogasometric, cardiovascular and spirometry variables were evaluated. Twenty-eight rabbits were distributed into two groups: GIVC (isoflurane and volume-controlled ventilation), GIVE (isoflurane and spontaneous ventilation), GSVC (sevoflurane and volume-controlled ventilation) and GSVE (sevoflurane and spontaneous ventilation). Induction was performed by mask with isoflurane (GIVE and GIVC) or sevoflurane (GSVE and GSVC) at 1.5 MAC in 100% oxygen. To maintain anesthesia, MAC was reset to 1. In GIVC and GSVC groups, rocuronium was administered at a dose of 0.6 mg/kg followed by its continuous infusion (0.6 mg/kg/h). In GSVE and GIVE, 0.9% NaCl was administered instead of rocuronium. Controlled ventilation was started by adjusting the capnometry in order to obtain values between 35 and 45 mmHg. Parameters were measured 60 minutes after induction of anesthesia (M0), 15 minutes after the bolus of rocuronium or 0.9% NaCl (M15) and every fifteen minutes (M30, M45 and M60). Hypercapnia and acidosis was evident in GIVC, GSVC and GSVE. We concluded that the volume-controlled mechanical ventilation was not able to maintain normocapnia in rabbits, producing acidosis in them, especially when using sevoflurane. The use of isoflurane showed greater stability than the sevoflurane anesthetic in the species studied.

ABSTRACT

The experiment was conducted to evaluate the nutritional value and the partial substitution of crude protein (CP) of alfalfa hay (FA) with CP hay maniçoba (FM) in diets for growing rabbits. The performance, digestibility, carcass yield and prime cuts parameters submitted to experimental diets were studied. Treatments consisted of four levels (0, 25, 50 and 75%) of protein alfalfa hay and maniçoba hay. The increasing substitution levels of maniçoba hay resulted in a linear increase in feed intake and weight gain quadratically at 83 days, showing that this ingredient can be used as a substitute for alfalfa hay in the diet of rabbits. The protein of alfalfa hay can be partially replaced by the maniçoba protein hay.

ABSTRACT

The effects of experimental Trypanosoma congolense infection on the ejaculate of rabbits and changes caused after treatment with Diminaveto® were investigated using 24 New Zealand White rabbits (bucks). The bucks were housed singly in standard rabbit cages and fed on specialized ration containing 10 percent Protein supplement, grains, legume, salt and fresh water ad libitum during the study. Data on ejaculate characteristics were collected from all the bucks in the first phase (i.e. before infection) and in the second phase (i.e. during infection, with 4.8x10(5) Trypanosoma congolense, intraperitoneally). Similar data were collected from 12 randomly selected bucks treated with 7.0mg/kg Diminaveto® following reconstitution during the third phase. Data collected were analysed using the Paired T- Test and Analysis of Variance. The infection led to significant (P< 0.05) reduction in spermatozoa motility, concentration and mass activity, with a significant (P< 0.05) increase in percentage of sperm cells with morphological abnormalities. Treatment with Diminaveto® led to improvement in all ejaculate parameters investigated. However, it was observed that the ejaculate did not attain the "before-infection" status following treatment with Diminaveto®. The study showed that infection with Trypanosoma congolense in rabbits caused significant reduction in ejaculate characteristics. Treatment with Diminaveto® however led to improvement in the ejaculate though at a rate slower than that at which the infection caused the reduction.

ABSTRACT

The domestication of the rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) has allowed the passage of a reproduction of the annual rate to a non-seasonal type, observing calving throughout the year. However, there are reproductive parameters which indicate that there is still some seasonality, for example, testicular position, which corresponds the rabbit to seasonal long days. This study examines the morphology of testes and epididymis, comparing the biostructure of testicular coverings of male rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) during the resting phase and sexual activity. For this, six male rabbits were used, three for the month of January, and three in September. The specimens were clinically healthy, sexually mature, and had an average weight of 2.5 kg. Testes were obtained with their scrotal sacs, which are processed using current histological and trichromic technique. Spermatogenic index and interstitial cell index were recorded according to Grocock & Clarke. During the month of January, it showed a clear decrease in testicular reproductive parameters, with IE = 3, and ICI = 4. By contrast, during the sexual activity it was observed IE = 5 and ICI = 5. During both periods, the albuginea tunic showed no large variations in thickness. Further, there is a great development of the cremasteric muscle in both stages, it was concluded that it does not undergo atrophy during the regression phase, possibly attributable to the voluntary cryptorchidism that this species has.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The rabbit has demonstrated to be an outstanding implanting model. As an obligated ovulating animal, its pregnancy time can be established exactly. The morphologic observation of uterus cuts of 7, 8, 9 and 10 days post mating, allowed this research to rebutid an apparent sequence morphometric events, that take place during rabbit implantation. Twenty New Zealand, white, adult, female rabbits were used in this research. (Oryctolagus cunículus), nulipara. And 4, proven, fertile, males were used for mating. These males were obtained from the Bioterio of the Faculty of Medicine at the Universidad de La Frontera, Temuco, Chile. Mating day was defined as day cero, sacrificing the females days 7, 8, 9 and 10 in each mating. Once sacrificed, the pelvic region was macro and mesoscopically dissected, and the vesicles were selected for histological and immunocitochemical study. Histological studies were performed with H.E. technique; morphometric and cellular kinetics with Tunnel and PCNA techniques. Descriptive statistics was used based on an average and standard deviation (p< 0.001). The Stata 9.0 statistical program was used. The morphometric measurements obtained were: diameters and volume of the uterine vesicle, height of the uterine wall and glandular lumen of the mesometrial and antimesometrial regions to 7-10 days post coitus. The immunocitochemical analysis identified: apoptotic Index of the cellular nucleous and cellular mitotic Índex. By day 8 post coitus were observed significant morphometric changes at the vesicular lumen, height of the uterine wall of the mesometrial region and glandular lumen. For the same day important changes of the cellular mitotic Índex and apoptotic Index were observed. The rabbit could be a species used to predict normal embryo development, after the morphologic comprehension of the implantation, given its not so invasive form of implantation and its capacity of early placenta formation. Providing updated information...

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The effect of intravenous injection of melatonin [0.1 mg/kg, 0.5 mg/Kg and 1 mg/Kg] on arterial blood pressure and heart rate in adult male rabbits was investigated in this study. Baroreflex function was assessed using phenylephrine [the pressor test] to induce moderate changes in arterial blood pressure and to alter the stimulation of baroreceptor sites. In addition, the effect of melatonin on sympathetic and parasympathetic efferent nerve activity was also investigated. Melatonin resulted in a lowering effect on arterial blood -pressure with a decrease in heart rate. The significant decrease of arterial blood pressure was observed at a dose as low as 0.5 mg/Kg. The lowering effect of melatonin on heart rate was detected at 1 mg/Kg. Baroreflex slope was not depressed significantly with a significant increase in pulse interval, until I mg/Kg melatonin. Sympathetic and vagal nerve activities were attenuated significantly by melatonin. This study indicated that baroreflex control of heart rate was depressed by intravenous administration of melatonin. There was a dissociation between the effect of melatonin on baroreflex sensitivity versus the effect of low blood pressure. Melatonin was found to alter the baroreflex heart rate response through its direct depressant effect on baroreceptors and on both sympathetic and parasympathetic efferent nerve pathways

ABSTRACT

The function of the thermoregulatory center of brain in regulating the process of heat exchange in rabbit's ear has been investigated in this work. Rabbits were stereotaxically implanted with water perfused thermodes in the brain to heat the hypothalamic thermoregulatory center. The normal hypothalamic temperature was found to be about 38.4 degree. This temperature maintains at that level despite the changes of the ambient temperatures due to a number of thermoregulatory mechanisms. One of these mechanisms is the role of ear pinna in varying the blood flow rate by constriction or dilation of the ear vessels. The work suggests that if the hypothalamic temperature is altered, a prominent response is achieved. The rise in ear temperature as a result of hypothalamus heatness seems to level off at higher temperatures. This may indicate a sort of saturation of the vasomotor system. This is a result of maximum dilation of blood vessels which maximizes the blood flow rate. This maximum dilation is found to be occurred at a hypothalamic temperature of 41-42 degree

ABSTRACT

The effect of hypothalamus coolness on the vasomotor ear pinna system of rabbits has been investigated. Rabbits were stereotaxically introduced with perfused thermodes for the coolness of hypothalamic thermoregulatory center. The work proposes that if the hypothalamic temperature is changed, a prominent thermoregulatory response occurs. Coolness of hypothalamus resulted in a decrease in the ear pinna temperature. This drop in temperature is probably caused by an almost complete closure of the peripheral vessels in the ear with only a small amount of blood flowing through this area. Maximum constriction of these vessels has been found to occur at a hypothalamic temperature of 30 degree. Coolness of hypothalamus has been also made the ear pinna temperature to undergo a more or less rhythmic oscillations. These oscillations indicate that blood is allowed to flow through the ear pinna at short intervals during induced vessels constriction. This permits the ear tissues to be supplied with the required oxygen and nutrients. It also helps in removal of carbon dioxide and other waste products which would be, severely impaired if the vasoconstriction continues without interruption

ABSTRACT

Thirty adult male rabbits were used in this study. Ten of them were used as a control. 10 received therapeutic doses of cimetidine [10 mg/kg body weight for 2 weeks] and the last-ten rabbits received toxic doses [300 mgm/kgm body weight for 2 weeks]. After sacrifice of the rabbits, pieces of the liver were processed for electron microscopy examination. The results revealed that, in the rabbits treated with the therapeutic closes, few lysosomes were evident. The mitochondria were swollen, but less electron dense and the rough endoplasmic reticulum appeared normal. Concerning the rabbits administered the toxic doses, the hepatocytes showed cell necrosis, destruction of the rough endoplasmic reticulum in some sites, lysosomes and phagocytic vacuoles. The mitochondria appeared more electron dense and smaller. There was retention of bile, and lipofuscin in some cells

ABSTRACT

This study was undertaken to identify the mechanoreceptors in the cruciate ligament of rabbit. Ten fresh ligaments were taken from dissected knee joints of adult rabbits and stained immediately according to a modification of gold chloride technique. Three types of nerve endings [mechanoreceptors] were observed in the surrounding connective tissue and the septa between collagen fibers of the ligaments. The receptors of type I were ovoid or spherical, type II were elongated and tortuous and type III were fusiform in shape. Each type receptors had a capsule of variable lamellae, pierced by a myelinated nerve axon. These mechanoreceptors seemed to provide the central nervous system with information pertaining the position of joint and the tension applied to the ligament during animal locomotion and posture
