ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to provide an updated review of dental procedures undertaken at the dental unit of the Onco-hematology service of the Instituto da Criança at the Hospital das Clínicas, Faculdade de Medicina, Universidade de São Paulo (ICr/HC-FMUSP). We retrospectively reviewed 565 of 1902 medical and dental records of patients diagnosed with onco-hematological diseases who were seen in a 3-year study (January 2015 to December 2017). We assessed data regarding population characteristics, onco-hematological diagnosis and dental procedures performed. Of the selected medical records, preventive dentistry was the most common procedure undertaken in this population, followed by oral maxillofacial surgeries, restorative dentistry and oral mucositis treatment. The most prevalent malignant diagnosis was acute lymphocytic leukemia, and the most prevalent nonmalignant diagnosis was sickle-cell anemia. Preventive dental procedures represent most of the dental procedures undertaken in hospitalized onco-hematological pediatric patients.

ABSTRACT

Child abuse is a disease for which there are records from ancient civilizations like the Greek and Egyptian, but until 1924 when the Geneva Declaration was signed: Children's rights: No to Abuse. In Mexico records of child abuse have been kept for the last 20 years. It has classified child abuse into two major categories: active and passive, dental malpractice liability is classified as child abuse therefore the dentist (especially the pediatric dentist) should pay attention to realize a clinical inspection and preparation of patient history, for signs of child abuse, and carry out the care of these patients with adequate management of their behavior, which can vary depending on the type of abuse the child has suffered. The consequences of abuse in oral cavity are multiple and can occur at short, medium and long term. This article presents a case of abuse by dental neglect and the consequences that this has on oral health, and therefore on the general health of the patient.

ABSTRACT

Aim: To determine the anesthetic effect of a 1.8 ml cartridge of anesthetic lidocaine 2 percent with epinephrine1:100,000 in inferior alveolar nerve block (NAI) for the extraction in mandibular teeth. Material and methods: A pilot study with analitic design. Participating patients of Dental Emergency Service volunteers from Valdivia-Chile for mandibular teeth extractions attending between May and July of 2010. The anesthetic technique was performed by a dentist using only one cartridge of anesthetic to the NAI. After 15 minutes, the effect was considered effective when anesthetic not require reinforcement with additional anesthesia during extraction of teeth. We analyzed the relationship between success anesthetic effect with sex, age, diagnosis of tooth and type and level of pain observed (chi-square and logistic regression, p <0,05). Results: 62 patients were selected, of which only 47 (75,8 percent) was achieved anesthetic success. There was no statistical association with sex, age, type or dental diagnosis and perceived pain. Conclusion: Using a 1,8 ml cartridge of anesthesia was effective in three of four patients treated by extraction of mandibular teeth. It suggests further research in relation to the clinical effectiveness of other anesthetics with the same dose in NAI.

ABSTRACT

Ranulas are pseudocysts as a result of salivary extravasation of the sublingual glands. Various treatments have been used, however, has been shown marsupialization the most used. The modification of the conventional technique, carefully filling of the lesion with gauze soaked in nitrofurazone (Furacin ®), have low rates of recurrence. The aim of this study was to evaluate the results obtained using the technique of marsupialization modified in the treatment of intraoral ranulas diagnosed in the Service of Stomatology, Faculty of Dentistry at the Universidade Federal do Ceará, from March 1999 to December 2010, and compare these data with previously reported studies in the literature. The data, after collection, were tabulated and statistically analyzed (SPSS, version 17.0). Of the total of 2,103 biopsies, 17 (0.8%) were intraoral ranulas, aged between 10 and 34 years of age (mean 22.9 years), with 82.4 men and 17.6 women. The lesion size ranged from 0.3 to 4 cm, with an average of about 1.8 cm. Modified marsupialization technique used in 13 patients, presented a single case of recurrence. Two other recurrences were observed when using the technique of surgical excision, used in four cases. Our results showed that marsupialization, with change of the conventional technique is an effective conservative approach, although not statistically significant (p> 0.05), must be chosen as first choice in the treatment of intraoral ranulas, with reduced rates of recurrence.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: approaching aspects concerning interrelation between Odontology and Speech-LanguagePathology in Orofacial Myology. Methods: the research was carried out using a questionnaire directedto 49 dentists specialized in orthodontics/facial orthopedics and 40 in pediatric dentistry, as well as to14 speech-language pathologists (SLP) specialized in orofacial myology, all from Campo Grande/MS.Results: there was an opinion consensus among those interviewed concerning the need forinterrelationship among the areas, being the stomatognathic system the common performance field ofthese professionals. The main reasons for SLP treatment are functional questions, but there issupposedly resistance on the part of the patients and dentists in referring to and/or consulting a SLP;and the cases of orthodontic relapses are caused by lack of further treatment in speech-languagetherapy. Conclusion: there is an integrated practice between the dentist and the SLP, although it isnecessary to adjust the rules about the correlated discharge and judgment of relapses . A equipmentwork is still a way to the integration of these professionals looking at adjusted treatment for the patient.
