ABSTRACT
Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSA) is directly related with cardiovascular disease. Although OSA and cardiovascular disease share the same risk factors, mainly those associated with obesity and the components of metabolic syndrome, some evidences have shown that there is an independent association between OSA and cardiovascular disease. This evidence reinforces the hypothesis that intermittent hipoxia, a unique characteristic of OSA, may be related to different stages of the pathophysiology mechanism of the formation and progression of the atherosclerosis plaque.
