Os seres humanos possuem um sentido natural de justiça que permeia todas as interações sociais. A emoção exerce um papel crucial na experiência moral. Embora os correlatos neurais das emoções básicas já tenham sido explorados, a representação das "emoções morais" permanece obscura. Utilizando a ressonância magnética funcional em voluntários normais, demonstramos que emoções desagradáveis básicas e morais ativam as amígdalas, tálamos e mesencéfalo. O córtex órbito-frontal e a região do sulco temporal superior são adicionalmente recrutados por emoções morais. Estas regiões, intimamente envolvidas no comportamento social, podem exercer um papel central no processamento das emoções morais.Humans are endowed with a natural sense of fairness that permeates every social interaction. Emotion plays a pivotal role in moral experience. Whereas the brain correlates of basic emotions have been explored, the neural representation of "moral emotions" remains poorly understood. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging in normal volunteers, we show that both basic and moral emotions activate the amygdala, thalamus and midbrain. The orbitofrontal cortex and the superior temporal sulcus region are additionally recruited by moral emotions.
