ABSTRACT
The urinary incontinence is a symptom rather prevalent in the general population. The pelvic floor disorders are conditions that do not threaten life, but cause significant morbidity and can affect profoundly the patients' quality of life, causing physical, social, occupational and/or sexual limitations. In order to evaluate the optimal treatment of stress urinary incontinence was realized a literature review. We consulted the databases PubMed and BVS, prioritizing recent articles and higher level of evidence since applicability expose more consistent with current practice. The results showed improvement in stress urinary incontinence with physiotherapy and/or surgery, but, despite the effectiveness of two methods of treatment, physiotherapy training the pelvic floor muscles should still be the first choice of conservative treatment, and if symptoms persist, surgery should be indicated
