ABSTRACT
Placenta is a vital organ connecting the developing fetus to the uterine wall for nutrients uptake and gas exchange,as well as fighting against pathogens, and secreting hormones to support pregnancy. For many years,it was believed that fetuses were growing in a germ-free environment.Contrary to this, recent studies demonstrated that a normal placenta harbors a nonpathogenic and diverse population of commensal microorganisms. Moreover,it also revealed that placental microbiome is associated with fetal growth restriction, preterm birth, maternal obesity, gestational diabetes mellitus and preeclampsia. This review summarized recent advances in placental microbiota.
