ABSTRACT
Objective To analyze the mediating effect of self -esteem on the relationship between social support and life satisfaction among patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).Methods A total of 197 IBS patients were evaluated using questionnaires of life satisfaction scale,self -esteem scale and perceived social support scale.Results The effects of gender and education on life satisfaction of IBS patients were not significant (P >0.05 ).Life satisfaction was significantly correlated with social support and self -esteem (|r|=0.321 -0.388,P <0.01).Social support was not only had direct effect on life satisfaction (β=0.53,P <0.01 ),but also had indirect effect through self -esteem on life satisfaction (β=0.09,P <0.01).Conclusion Life satisfaction of patients with IBS was influenced by social support and self -esteem,and self -esteem played the partial intermediary role in the influencing model.
