RESUMO

Hans Schliack (1919 -2008) was one of the prominent post war neurologists who acted successfully for the emancipation of clinical neurology in the former western part of Berlin and Germany. His scientific work was destined to the theory of segments (dermatomes, myotomes, zones of Head, initially with Karl Hansen in Lübeck), sweat disturbances in neurological disorders and peripheral nerve lesions. The latter issue led - in cooperation with Marco Mumenthaler - to the textbook, which held its leading standard since its first edition in 1965. Schliack's founding editorship of the purely neurological journal "Aktuelle Neurologie" since 1974, his author- and editorship of neurological textbooks and his teaching of numerous coworkers in Berlin and Hannover stress his outstanding role over nearly five decades.

In order to estimate the extent of nerval defects, we recommend the soaking test which may reveal affected areas indicated by the loss of wrinkling at the finger-tips after soaking the hands in warm water for half an hour. Thus we found impairment in the formation of wrinkles in 6 out of 7 tested patients suffering from different types of leprosy. In order to study the significance of the soaking test with regard to acute nerval signs and symptoms, one patient was reexaminated when he showed acute painful swelling of the right n. ulnaris. There was normal wrinkling observed at the affected hand, which did not differ from the outcome of the preceding test. This finding indicates that the soaking test is only appropriate to the examination of chronic nerval lesions in leprosy.

RESUMO

Quantitative electromyographic (QEMG) data from 3 muscles recorded with a 50-micronV threshold for the turns and amplitude measurements are presented. Using turns per unit amplitude as the index, consistent and comparable readings were recorded from abductor digiti minimi, biceps brachii and vastus medialis in normal subjects, namely 1.132 +/- 0.08 (31 subjects), 1.059 +/- 0.122 (31 subjects) and 1.007 +/- 0.088 (11 subjects), respectively. It is shown here that the diagnostic yield increases when all 3 values, namely, turns/s, average amplitude and turns/unit amplitude are considered in conjunction rather than considering the first 2 alone.

RESUMO

The manner of dealing with this subject is to be strictly clinical and practical. Classifications will not be all-embracing but will include only those conditions likely to be encountered at some time in the career of the ordinary family practitioner. Only occasionally, in the interests of clarity, will an uncommon disorder receive brief mention. The amphasis will be on bedside diagnosis; electrodiagnostic tests will not be described.
