RESUMO
We present eight patients with larynx involvement in leprosy. Seven were classified as lepromatous and one was borderline leprosy in reversal reaction. One patient required an emergency tracheostomy and one had an almost complete uppe airway obstruction.

Sarcoidosis is a chronic systemic granulomatous disease that occasionally affects the larynx. When the larynx is affected, the symptoms are frequently mild, but severe airway obstruction can occur. Although systemic corticosteroids are helpful, patients may become refractory to further drug administration. The current methods of treatment are here summarized, and the patient literature is reviewed. We also report a case of a young patient suffering from laryngeal sarcoidosis successfully treated by the antileprosy agent clofazimine and propose it as an alternative treatment of laryngeal sarcoidosis in patients refractory to corticosteroids.

The result of a study conducted on 30 patients of lepromatous leprosy regarding laryngeal involvement is presented. The incidence of leprous laryngitis is 36.6 per cent in this part of India in lepromatous leprosy patients. Leprosy is long standing disease so laryngeal lesions developed gradually and may be asymptomatic in some cases while others have been found to have variety of clinical manifestation in form of congestion, infiltration, nodulation, thickening and fibrosis. Anti-leprosy chemotherapy is equally effective on these lesions. A screening survey of laryngeal pathology in such cases should be done periodically.

Leprosy (Hansen's disease) is a chronic, systemic, granulomatous infection in man caused by the acid-fast organism Mycobacterium leprae, which has a predilection for the skin, the peripheral nervous system, and the mucosa of the upper respiratory tract. The organism establishes a stable host-parasite relationship that is usually not fatal but that is potentially mutilating....

Five instances of lepromatous leprosy involving lesions of the larynx were encountered among a series of 280 laryngeal lesions. These are briefly described as involving the epiglottis in all cases, vocal cords in two, and extension into the pyriform fossa in one instance.
