ABSTRACT

Purpose: Medicine is practiced in a collaborative and interdisciplinary manner. However, medical training and assessment remain largely isolated in traditional departmental silos. Two Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) developed by the American Board of Surgery are multidisciplinary in nature and offer a unique opportunity to study interdisciplinary assessment. Methods: EPA microassessments were collected from Surgery and Emergency Medicine (EM) faculty between July 2018 and May 2020. Differences in feedback provided by faculty were assessed using natural language processing (NLP) techniques, (1) automated algorithms; and (2) topic modeling. Summative content analysis was used to identify themes in text feedback. We developed automated coding algorithms for these themes using regular expressions. Topic modeling was performed using latent Dirichlet allocation. Results: 549 assessments were collected for two EPAs: 198 for GS Consultation and 351 for Trauma. 27 EM and 27 Surgery faculty provided assessments for 71 residents. EM faculty were significantly more likely than Surgery faculty to submit feedback coded as Communication, Demeanor, and Timeliness, (all chi-square test p-values < 0.01). No significant differences were found for Clinical Performance, Skill Level, or Areas for Improvement. Similarly, topic modeling indicated that assessments submitted by EM faculty focused on communication, timeliness, and interpersonal skills, while those submitted by Surgery faculty focused on the residents' abilities to effectively gather information and correctly diagnose the underlying pathology. Conclusions: Feedback from EM and Surgery faculty differed significantly based on NLP analyses. EPA assessments should stem from multiple sources to avoid assessment gaps and represent a more holistic picture of performance.

ABSTRACT

Flavobacterium psychrophilum is the causative agent of Rainbow Trout Fry Syndrome which has had a major impact on global salmonid aquaculture. Recent outbreaks in Atlantic salmon in Scotland and Chile have added to the need for a vaccine to protect both salmon and trout. At present no licensed vaccines are available in Europe, leaving antibiotics as the only course of action to contain disease outbreaks. Outbreaks generally occur in fry at temperatures between 10 and 15 °C. Recently outbreaks in larger fish have given added impetus to the development of a vaccine which can provide long term protection from this highly heterogeneous pathogen. Most fish injectable vaccines are formulated with oil emulsion adjuvants to induce strong and long lasting immunity, but which are known to cause side effects. Alternative adjuvants are currently sought to minimise these adverse effects. The current study was performed to assess the efficacy of a polyvalent, whole cell vaccine containing formalin-inactivated F. psychrophilum to induce protective immunity in Atlantic salmon. The vaccine was formulated with an adjuvant containing squalene and aluminium hydroxide, and was compared to a vaccine formulated with a traditional oil adjuvant, Montanide ISA 760VG, and a non-adjuvanted vaccine. Duplicate groups of salmon (23.5 ± 6.8 g) were vaccinated with each of the vaccine formulations or phosphate buffered saline by intraperitoneal injection. Fish were challenged by intramuscular injection with F. psychrophilum six weeks post-vaccination to test the efficacy of the vaccines. Cumulative mortality reached 70% in the control salmon, while the groups of salmon that received vaccine had significantly lower mortality than the controls (p = 0.0001), with no significant difference in survival between vaccinated groups. The squalene/alum adjuvant was safe, more readily metabolised by the fish and induced less histopathological changes than the traditional oil adjuvant.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Zinc deficiency-like (ZDL) syndrome is an inherited defect of Fleckvieh calves, with striking similarity to bovine hereditary zinc deficiency (BHZD). However, the causative mutation in a phospholipase D4 encoding gene (PLD4) shows no connection to zinc metabolism. OBJECTIVES: To describe clinical signs, laboratory variables, and pathological findings of ZDL syndrome and their utility to differentiate ZDL from BHZD and infectious diseases with similar phenotype. ANIMALS: Nine hospitalized calves with crusting dermatitis and confirmed mutation in PLD4 and medical records from 25 calves with crusting dermatitis or suspected zinc deficiency. METHODS: Prospective and retrospective case series. RESULTS: The 9 calves (age: 5-53 weeks) displayed a moderate to severe crusting dermatitis mainly on the head, ventrum, and joints. Respiratory and digestive tract inflammations were frequently observed. Zinc supplementation did not lead to remission of clinical signs in 4 calves. Laboratory variables revealed slight anemia in 8 calves, hypoalbuminemia in 6 calves, but reduced serum zinc concentrations in only 3 calves. Mucosal erosions/ulcerations were present in 7 calves and thymus atrophy or reduced thymic weights in 8 calves. Histologically, skin lesions were indistinguishable from BHZD. Retrospective analysis of medical records revealed the presence of this phenotype since 1988 and pedigree analysis revealed a common ancestor of several affected calves. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: ZDL syndrome should be suspected in Fleckvieh calves with crusting dermatitis together with diarrhea or respiratory tract inflammations without response to oral zinc supplementation. Definite diagnosis requires molecular genetic confirmation of the PLD4 mutation.

ABSTRACT

The use of chlorella as an immune stimulant to enhance nonspecific host defense mechanisms or as an antimicrobial to inhibit bacterial growth has been reported. Thus, the aim of the present study was to clarify the effect of recombinant chlorella supplementation on growth performance, meat quality, and the blood profile, excreta microflora, and nutrient digestibility in broilers. A total of 375 one-day-old ROSS 308 broilers (male and female) were allotted to 5 dietary treatments using 5 cages with 15 chicks per cage. Treatments were: 1) NC, basal diet supplemented with 1.0% E. coli fermented liquor (EFL); 2) PC1, 0.2% EFL with chlorella; 3) PC2, 1.0% EFL with chlorella; 4) T1, 0.2% EFL with chlorella (anti-viral); and 5) T2, 1.0% EFL with chlorella (anti-viral). The broilers in the T2 treatment groups showed higher body weight gain (BGW) by 2.55% (P < 0.01) and lower feed conversion ratio (FCR) by 2.75% (P < 0.05) compared with those fed the control NC treatment group. Moreover, the blood contents of blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, and IgA in the broilers of the T2 treatment group were significantly increased by 28.12, 23.07, and 29.72%, respectively -more than those found in the broilers of the NC treatment group (P < 0.01). In contrast, the LDL/C in the blood from the animals in the T2 treatment group was significantly decreased by 23.23% - more than that in the blood from the NC broilers (P < 0.05). Based on these results, we suggest that the dietary supplementation of broilers with recombinant chlorella could improve their growth performance, increase the concentration of IgA and apparently metabolizable nitrogen in the blood, and decrease ammonia emissions. Therefore, our findings have important implications for the effect of recombinant chlorella supplementation through increasing the concentration of IgA and the level of metabolizable nitrogen.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Accumulation of hypoxia-inducible transcription factors (HIFs) by prolyl-4-hydroxylase inhibitors (PHI) has been suggested to induce neuroprotection in the ischemic rodent brain. We aimed to investigate in vivo effects of a novel PHI on HIF-regulated neurotrophic and pro-apoptotic factors in the developing normoxic and hypoxic mouse brain. METHODS: Neonatal mice (P7) were treated with PHI FG-4497 (30-100mg/kg, i.p.) followed by exposure to systemic hypoxia (8% O2, 6h) 4h later. Cerebral expression of HIFα-subunits, specific neurotrophic and vasoactive target genes (vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), adrenomedullin (ADM), erythropoietin (EPO), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS)) as well as pro-apoptotic (BCL2/adenovirus E1B 19-kDa protein-interacting protein 3 gene (BNIP3), immediate early response 3 (IER3)) and migratory factors (chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4), stromal cell-derived factor 1 (SDF-1)) was determined (quantitative real-time (RT)., Western blot analysis) in comparison to controls. Apoptotic cell death was analyzed by terminal desoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling (TUNEL) and cleaved caspase 3 (CC3) staining. RESULTS: Under normoxic conditions, FG-4497 treatment significantly induced the accumulation of both HIF-1α and HIF-2α isoforms in developing mouse brain. In addition, there was a significant up-regulation of HIF target genes (VEGF, ADM, EPO, CXCR4, p<0.01) with FG-4497 treatment compared to controls supporting functional activation of the HIF proteins. Under hypoxia, differential target gene activation was observed in the developing brain including additive effects of FG-4497 and hypoxia on mRNA expression of VEGF and ADM as well as a dose-dependent down-regulation of iNOS. BNIP3 but not IER3 mRNA levels significantly increased in hypoxic brains pre-treated with high-dose FG-4497 compared to controls. Of special interest, FG-4497 treatment significantly diminished apoptotic cell death, quantified by TUNEL and CC3-positive cells, in hypoxic developing brains compared to controls. CONCLUSIONS: PHI treatment modulates neurotrophic factors known to be crucially involved in hypoxia-induced cerebral adaptive mechanisms as well as early brain maturation. Pre-treatment with FG-4497 seems to protect the developing brain from hypoxia-induced apoptosis. Present observations provide basic information for further evaluation of neuroprotective properties of PHI treatment in hypoxic injury of the developing brain. However, potential effects on maturational processes need special attention in experimental research targeting HIF-dependent neuroprotective interventions during the very early stage of brain development.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Curcumin, the active ingredient of turmeric (Curcuma longa), has a wide range of beneficial effects including anti-inflammation and analgesia. However, poor bioavailability of curcumin hinders its clinical application. To overcome this limitation, we modified the structure of curcumin and synthesized new derivatives with favourable pharmacokinetic profiles. Recently, curcumin has been shown to have an antagonizing effect on transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1) ion channels. We investigated the antinociceptive activity of KMS4034 which had the most favourable pharmacokinetics among the tested curcumin derivatives. METHODS: To evaluate the mechanism of the antinociceptive effects of KMS4034, capsaicin (I(CAP))- and heat (I(heat))-induced currents in TRPV1 expressing HEK293 cells were observed after the application of KMS4034. Nociceptive behavioural measurement using the hot-plate test, formalin test, and chronic constriction injury (CCI) model were evaluated in mice. Also, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) was stained immunohistochemically in the L4/5 dorsal horns in mice with neuropathic pain. RESULTS: I(CAP) (P<0.01) and I(heat) (P<0.05) of TRPV1 were significantly blocked by 10 µM KMS4034. Behaviourally, noticeable antinociceptive effects after 10 mg kg(-1) of KMS4034 treatment were observed in the first (P<0.05) and second phases (P<0.05) of the formalin and hot-plate tests. The mechanical threshold of CCI mice treated with 10 mg kg(-1) KMS4034 was significantly increased compared with control. Immunohistochemical CGRP expression was decreased in the lamina I-II of the lumbar dorsal horns in KMS4034-treated CCI mice compared with the control (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: KMS4034 may be an effective analgesic for various pain conditions.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture in the treatment for allergic rhinitis. METHODS: This study was a multicenter, randomized, parallel-controlled study. Participants were randomized to either the active acupuncture, sham acupuncture, or waitlist groups. The active and sham acupuncture groups received acupuncture treatment three times per week for 4 weeks. In the sham group, minimal acupuncture at nonacupuncture points was used. The waitlist group did not receive any acupuncture treatment. RESULTS: Of the 238 participants, 97, 94, and 47 individuals were assigned to the active acupuncture, sham acupuncture, and waitlist group, respectively. After the treatment, the difference in the total nasal symptom score (TNSS) was significantly reduced in the active acupuncture group compared with the sham acupuncture (difference: -1.03, 95% confidence interval [CI]: -1.96, -0.09, P = 0.03) and waitlist (difference: -2.49, 95% CI: -3.68, -1.29, P < 0.0001). The active acupuncture group exhibited a significant change in the total non-nasal symptom score (TNNSS) compared with the waitlist (difference: -0.78, 95% CI: -1.22, -0.34, P = 0.0002), but not the sham acupuncture group (difference; 0.15, 95% CI: -0.21, 0.5, P = 0.56). Both active and sham acupuncture treatments resulted in significant improvements in TNSS and TNNSS compared to baseline. CONCLUSION: Active acupuncture showed a significantly greater effect on symptoms of allergic rhinitis than either sham acupuncture or no active treatment. The symptoms of allergic rhinitis decreased significantly after treatment in the both acupuncture and sham acupuncture groups. Acupuncture appears to be an effective and safe treatment for allergic rhinitis.

ABSTRACT

Hepatocyte and various hepatic stem cell transplantations have been studied as alternative therapies to orthotopic liver transplantation for liver injury. The engraftment of transplanted cells into the parenchyma requires transmigration through sinusoidal endothelial cells (SECs), the only cellular barrier. In this study, we constructed a SEC-imaging perfusion culture system that mimics sinusoids with respect to hemorheologic properties. SECs were successfully maintained for 24 hours. Human liver stem cells (HLSCs) were used as a model of transplanted cells for in vitro engraftment to SECs under perfusion culture conditions. Conditions of high shear stress perfusion with 0.34 dyne/cm(2) significantly reduced cell adhesion in contrast to lower shear stress conditions of 0.1 and 0.03 dyne/cm(2). Among the biologic perfusion fluids, namely, fetal bovine serum (FBS), pig plasma, and 5% human albumin solution, HLSCs showed significantly greater attachment to SECs when perfused with FBS, which is well known to contain abundant amounts of adhesion molecules. This biomimetic SEC perfusion culture system may provide a useful tool to study engraftment mechanisms and to evaluate the effects of various enhancers as an alternative to animal models.

OBJECTIVES: Short-acting nifedipine is frequently prescribed in elderly hypertensive patients, despite warnings of possible harmful cardiovascular effects. We conducted a case-crossover study to estimate the risk of stroke episodes associated with use of short-acting nifedipine in elderly hypertensive patients. METHODS: We used the Korea Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service database. Cases included elderly hypertensive patients with hospitalization or emergency department visits for first stroke (International Classification of Diseases-10, I60-I64) between July 1, 2005, and June 30, 2006. Patients with prior stroke-related hospital admission or any visit related to TIA were excluded. Exposure to a short-acting nifedipine formulation was assessed within 7 days before the incident stroke episode (case period) and within a 7-day period preceding 60 days before the episode (control period). Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated by conditional logistic regression, with adjusting for antihypertensives, anticoagulants, antiplatelet agents, and pneumonia. RESULTS: A total of 16,069 stroke patients with a mean (±SD) age of 68.3 (±2.1) years were studied, of whom 8,573 (53.3%) were female. Short-acting nifedipine was prescribed at least once to 301 (1.9%) patients during the case period. An increased risk of stroke associated with use of short-acting nifedipine within 7 days (adjusted OR 2.56; 95% CI 1.96-3.37) was observed. Patients who were newly prescribed nifedipine within the recent 7 days showed an OR of 4.17 (95% CI 2.93-5.93) compared with nonusers. CONCLUSION: Use of short-acting nifedipine was associated with increased risk of stroke occurrence in elderly hypertensive patients.

ABSTRACT

The effect of calcium and high-pressure (HP) treatment on the heat gelation of soybean proteins was investigated. In the presence of calcium (2 to 25 mM), the gelation of dispersions of soybean protein isolate (SPI), a beta-conglycinin-enriched fraction (7SEF), and a glycinin-enriched fraction (11SEF) started with protein having a lower degree of denaturation. The gels from these dispersions had greater stiffness than the samples without added calcium. HP treatment had different effects on heat-induced gelation depending on the presence of calcium and on the nature of the proteins. In the absence of calcium, gels with low stiffness were formed after HP treatment, compared with untreated samples, and regardless of the sample type (SPI, 7SEF, 11SEF). In the presence of calcium, gel stiffness was increased after HP treatment of dispersions containing beta-conglycinin (SPI and 7SEF), while the opposite effect was observed for 11SEF. In the presence of calcium, HP treatment promoted a greater contribution of hydrophobic interactions in SPI and 7SEF. In the dispersions containing beta-conglycinin, these conditions also promoted the appearance of a heterogeneous distribution of molecular sizes, from enormous aggregates to dissociated species. Our results suggest that, in the presence of calcium, HP treatment has an opposite effect on the ability of glycinin and beta-conglycinin to participate in the formation of a 3-dimensional network upon heating.

ABSTRACT

Curcumin has diverse therapeutic effects, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-cancer, and antimicrobial activities. The vanilloid moiety of curcumin is considered important for activation of the transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1), which plays an important role in nociception. However, very little is known about the effects of curcumin on nociception. In the present study, we investigated whether the anti-nociceptive effects of curcumin are mediated via TRPV1 by using nociceptive behavioral studies and in vitro whole-cell patch-clamp recordings in the trigeminal system. Subcutaneous injection of capsaicin in the vibrissa pad area of rats induced thermal hyperalgesia. Intraperitoneally administered curcumin blocked capsaicin-induced thermal hyperalgesia in a dose-dependent manner. Whereas curcumin reduced capsaicin-induced currents in a dose-dependent manner in both trigeminal ganglion neurons and TRPV1-expressing HEK 293 cells, curcumin did not affect heat-induced TRPV1 currents. Taken together, our results indicate that curcumin blocks capsaicin-induced TRPV1 activation and thereby inhibits TRPV1-mediated pain hypersensitivity.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Alumina toughening enhances the mechanical properties of zirconia ceramics but the biocompatibility of this material has rarely been addressed. In this study, we examined the osteoblast response to alumina-toughened zirconia (ATZ) with different surface topographies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Human osteoblasts isolated from maxillary biopsies of four patients were cultured and seeded onto disks of the following substrates: ATZ with a machined surface, airborne-particle abraded ATZ, airborne-particle abraded and acid etched ATZ. Airborne-particle abraded and acid etched titanium (SLA) and polystyrene disks served as a reference control. The surface topography of the various substrates was characterized by profilometry (R(a), R(p-v)) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Cell proliferation, cell-covered surface area, alkaline phophatase (ALP) and osteocalcin production were determined. The cell morphology was analyzed on SEM images. RESULTS: The surface roughness of ATZ was increased by airborne-particle abrasion, but with the R(a) and R(p-v) values showing significantly lower values compared with SLA titanium (Mann-Whitney U-test P<0.05). The proliferation assay revealed no statistically significant differences between the ATZ substrates, SLA titanium and polystyrene (Kruskal-Wallis test, P>0.05). All substrates were densely covered by osteoblasts. ALP and osteocalcin production was similar on the examined surfaces. Cell morphology analysis revealed flat-spread osteoblasts with cellular extensions on all substrates. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that ATZ may be a viable substrate for the growth and differentiation of human osteoblasts. Surface modification of ATZ by airborne-particle abrasion alone or in combination with acid etching seems not to interfere with the growth and differentiation of the osteoblasts.

ABSTRACT

The objectives of the present study were to assess how the stability of the emulsion recovered from aqueous extraction processing of soybeans was affected by characteristics of the starting material and extraction and demulsification conditions. Adding endopeptidase Protex 6L during enzyme-assisted aqueous extraction processing (EAEP) of extruded soybean flakes was vital to obtaining emulsions that were easily demulsified with enzymes. Adding salt (up to 1.5 mM NaCl or MgCl(2)) during extraction and storing extruded flakes before extraction at 4 and 30 degrees C for up to 3 months did not affect the stabilities of emulsions recovered from EAEP of soy flour, flakes and extruded flakes. After demulsification, highest free oil yield was obtained with EAEP of extruded flakes, followed by flour and then flakes. The same protease used for the extraction step was used to demulsify the EAEP cream emulsion from extruded full-fat soy flakes at concentrations ranging from 0.03% to 2.50% w/w, incubation times ranging from 2 to 90 min, and temperatures of 25, 50 or 65 degrees C. Highest free oil recoveries were achieved at high enzyme concentrations, mild temperatures, and short incubation times. Both the nature of enzyme (i.e., protease and phospholipase), added alone or as a cocktail, concentration of enzymes (0.5% vs. 2.5%) and incubation time (1 vs. 3 h), use during the extraction step, and nature of enzyme added for demulsifying affected free oil yield. The free oil recovered from EAEP of extruded flakes contained less phosphorus compared with conventional hexane-extracted oil. The present study identified conditions rendering the emulsion less stable, which is critical to increasing free oil yield recovered during EAEP of soybeans, an environmentally friendly alternative processing method to hexane extraction.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture as a treatment for chronic shoulder pain and to compare the efficacy of individualized acupuncture to fixed, standard point acupuncture treatment. DESIGN: The study was a single-blind randomized, controlled trial. SETTINGS/LOCATION: The study was conducted in an outpatient rheumatology clinic at the VA Medical Center of Philadelphia. SUBJECTS: The participants were adults with shoulder pain for at least 8 weeks with a diagnosis of osteoarthritis or rotator cuff tendonitis and a total Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI) score of > or =30. INTERVENTIONS: Thirty-one (31) subjects were randomized to one of three treatment groups: individualized acupuncture points according to the approaches of Traditional Chinese Medicine; fixed, standard acupuncture points conventionally used for shoulder pain; and sham nonpenetrating acupuncture. Subjects received 12 treatments over 6 weeks and were reassessed using the SPADI at the end of the 6 weeks. OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome evaluated was the mean change in total SPADI score in each group from baseline to 6 weeks. RESULTS: After 6 weeks of treatment, the mean total SPADI score improved in all three groups, but the change was clinically significant (> or =10 points) only in groups 1 and 2 (-20.3 and -20.4, respectively, versus -6.5 in group 3). The treatment effects of groups 1 and 2 compared to the sham acupuncture group were -13.8 (95% confidence interval: -2.2 to -25.4, p < 0.015) and -13.9 (-2.0 to -25.8, p < 0.013), respectively. There was no difference between the individualized acupuncture and standardized acupuncture treatments. CONCLUSIONS: Acupuncture may be an effective treatment for chronic shoulder pain. There may be no difference in efficacy between individualized and standardized acupuncture treatment. This suggests that the use of standard points may make treatment easier for patient care and for further research studies.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to describe the clinical characteristics of childhood intussusception and to estimate the incidence rate of intussusception before the introduction of rotavirus vaccines in Korea. METHODS: Demographic, clinical, diagnostic, treatment, and outcome data for patients aged <5 years who were diagnosed with intussusception in Jeonbuk Province, South Korea from January 2000 through December 2002, were retrospectively collected using a standardized data collection instrument. RESULTS: During the 3-year period, 408 patients were diagnosed with intussusception; 82.8% of children were aged <24 months. Predominant signs and symptoms were vomiting (64.5%), bloody stool (43.9%), and abdominal pain/irritability (41.9%). The combination of ultrasound and barium or air enema was the most frequently used diagnostic approach (38.7%). Three hundred and thirteen patients (76.7%) were treated by radiologic reduction, 88 (21.6%) patients were treated by surgical intervention, and the remaining seven patients had no treatment. The mean annual incidence rate of intussusception in Jeonbuk Province was 236/100,000 among children aged <2 years and 106/100,000 among children aged <5 years. CONCLUSIONS: This retrospective study provides a background incidence rate of childhood intussusception in Korean children before the introduction of the rotavirus vaccine.

ABSTRACT

Extraction of soybean oil from flaked and extruded soybeans using enzyme-assisted aqueous extraction processing (EAEP) is a promising alternative to conventional hexane extraction. The efficiencies of four proteases releasing oil from extruded material were compared. Protex 51FP, Protex 6L and Protex 7L each extracted 90% of the total oil available while Protex 50FP gave similar extraction yield as the control (without enzyme treatment). During EAEP, however, a stable emulsion forms that must be broken in order to recover free soybean oil. The potential of various proteases and phospholipases to destabilize the emulsion was determined. Two enzymes, a phospholipase A2 (LysoMax) and a protease (Protex 51FP) were selected to determine the effect of enzyme concentration on demulsification. Although at a 2% concentration (w/w, enzyme/(cream+free oil)), each enzyme tested was effective in totally destabilizing the cream; the protease released significantly more free oil than did the phospholipase at concentrations less than 2%. At 0.2% concentration, 88 and 48% of free oil were obtained with the protease and phospholipase, respectively. Reducing the pH of the cream also destabilized the cream with maximum demulsification at the isoelectric point of soy proteins. These results provide destabilization strategies for the oil-rich emulsion formed during aqueous extraction processing of extruded flakes and significantly contribute to the development of this environmentally-friendly technology.

ABSTRACT

A total of 196 day-old male broiler chicks were randomly allocated to 1 of 4 treatments in a study conducted to determine the effects of dietary supplementation of chito-oligosaccharide (COS) on growth, nutrient digestibility, and serum composition. The experimental diets consisted of an unsupplemented control diet based on corn, soybean meal, and fish meal or similar diets supplemented with either chlortetracycline, 50 mg/kg of COS, or 100 mg/kg of COS. Each treatment was fed to 7 replicate pens of birds, with 7 birds per pen. Broiler performance, nutrient digestibility, cecal microbial concentrations, and serum indices were measured at the end of the starter (d 21) and grower phases (d 42). During the starter period and overall, broilers fed 50 or 100 mg/kg of COS had better (P<0.05) average daily gain, average daily feed intake, and feed conversion than the control birds. The performance of birds fed chlortetracycline was generally intermediate between that of the control and the 2 COS treatments. Compared with the birds in the control or chlortetracycline treatments, the birds receiving 100 mg/kg of COS had better nutrient digestibility of DM, energy, calcium, and phosphorus; higher (P<0.05) concentrations of cecal Lactobacillus; and lower (P<0.05) serum triglyceride and total cholesterol during the starter phase. During the grower phase, the birds fed 100 mg/kg of COS had higher (P<0.05) calcium digestibility and CP retention than those fed the chlortetracycline treatment, and lower concentrations of cecal Escherichia coli than birds in the control treatment. The serum growth hormone level in birds fed 50 mg/kg of COS was higher (P<0.05) than in the other treatments. The birds fed 100 mg/kg of COS had lower (P<0.05) serum triglyceride, higher (P<0.05) serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and higher serum total protein content than birds in the other treatments. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with COS appeared to improve the average daily gain of broilers by increasing the average daily feed intake and nutrient digestibility and modulating the concentrations of cecal microbial flora. Additionally, COS increased serum protein and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and decreased serum triglyceride.

Introducción. El fibroma condromixoide es un tumor benigno de crecimiento lento y poco frecuente. Su incidencia en la región craneofacial es rara, especialmente en el seno frontal. Objetivos. Presentamos el seguimiento a largo plazo de un paciente intervenido en relación a un fibromacondromixoide del seno frontal. Se discuten los distintos diagnósticos diferenciales y las alternativas terapéuticas. Discusión. Desde el punto de vista de anatomía patológica es necesario hacer el diagnóstico diferencialcon condrosarcoma, mixosarcoma, mixoma y cordoma. Desde el punto de vista radiológico, el diagnóstico de fibroma condromixoide ha de ser considerado en toda lesión ósea aislada con expansión u osteolisis, márgenes lobulados y septos intralesionales. El tratamiento del fibromacondromixoide incluye principalmente curetaje o resección en bloque, mientras que la radioterapia aislada no se considera de primera elección.Conclusiones. La naturaleza benigna del fibroma condromixoide implica la importancia de evitar tratamientos radicales. El abordaje subcraneal se presenta como una alternativa válida para el tratamiento de lesiones localizadas en el seno frontal. Es fundamental un seguimiento clínico-radiológicoadecuado para identificar precozmente posibles recidivas


Introduction. Chondromyxoid fibroma is a slow growingand rare benign bone tumor. Its location in the craniofacial skeleton is not common, especially in the frontal sinus. Objectives. We present a long-term follow-up of a patient with a frontal chondromyxoidfibroma who was operated four years ago. We discussthe various differential diagnoses and possible treatments. Discussion. The differential diagnosis includes chondrosarcoma, myxosarcoma, myxoma and chordoma. From the radiological point of view, chondromyxoid fibroma must be always considered as a diagnosticpossibility when a solitary bone lesion appears with expansion or cortical osteolysis, lobulated margins and intralesional septi. Treatment includes curettage or monoblock resection with immediate bone graft reconstruction. Radiation therapy alone mustnot be considered as the first therapeutic possibility. Conclusions. the benign nature of the tumor does not justify radical, unnecessary treatment. The subcranial approach is appropriate for lesions located in the frontal sinus. A clinical and radiological follow-up isneeded to identify tumor relapse

ABSTRACT

High frequency somatic embryogenesis of Eleutheorcoccus chiisanensis was achieved through suspension culture of embryogenic cells in hormone-free Murashige and Skoog liquid medium supplemented with 30 g sucrose l-1. Cotyledonary somatic embryos were germinated and converted into plantlets using 20 microM: gibberellic acid which were then grown in a 10 l airlift bioreactor. HPLC analysis revealed the accumulation of eleutheroside B, E and E1 in the embryos and plantlets. Thus mass production of embryos and plantlets of E. chiisanensis can be achieved in liquid cultures and the biomass produced may become an alternative source of eleutherosides.
