RESUMEN

Background: There are no guidelines on dietary supplements for the prevention or treatment of COVID-19. Therefore, we would like to analyze and discuss the above confusion through the bibliometric analysis. Methods: On 3 September 2022, we conducted a search of all relevant literature retrieved from the WOS core collection database from 2019 to 2022. CiteSpace software is used to build the visual co-occurrence network. Results: In the study of "COVID-19 and Dietary Supplements", the total of 170 authors published 855 articles in 451 journals. Several distinct core author groups were formed by Wang, Grant, Singh, Zhu, and other authors with numerous publications. The majority of the publications came from the Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences. The United States of America had the highest number of publications. By analyzing keyword clusters, we found that the research focus was dietary supplements (vitamin D, vitamin K, vitamin C), mechanisms (ferritin, specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs), oxidative stress), research methods (clinical trials), and the prevention and treatment strategies (lockdown) of COVID-19. Conclusions: vitamin D is the mainstream dietary supplement for COVID-19. There are still numerous controversies that deserve further discussion. Such as whether the use of vitamin D or TCM offers benefits, and whether the addition of dietary supplements during the lockdown measures can help prevent COVID-19 infection.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of ethanol vapor on the inhibition of Alternaria alternata and Botrytis cinerea in postharvest blueberry and the induction of defense-related enzymes (DREs) activities in fungi-inoculated blueberries stored at 0±0.5°C for 16days. Results indicated that ethanol vapor markedly inhibited the mycelial growth of A. alternata and B. cinerea in a dose-dependent manner, with inhibition rates of 9.1% (250µlL-1), 36.4% (500µlL-1), and 5.5% (1,000µlL-1) on A. alternata and 14.2% (250µlL-1), 44.7% (500µlL-1), and 76.6% (1,000µlL-1) on B. cinerea, respectively. Meanwhile, ethanol vapor also enhanced the activities of DREs in fungi-inoculated blueberries, including ß-1,3-glucanase (GLU), chitinase (CHI), phenylalnine ammonialyase (PAL), peroxidase (POD), and polyphenol oxidase (PPO). In particular, 500µlL-1 ethanol vapor increased the activities of DREs by 84.7% (GLU), 88.0% (CHI), 37.9% (PAL), 85.5% (POD), and 247.0% (PPO) in A. alternata-inoculated blueberries and 103.8% (GLU), 271.1% (CHI), 41.1% (PAL), 148.3% (POD), and 74.4% (PPO) in B. cinerea-inoculated blueberries, respectively. But, the activity of PPO was decreased by 55.2 and 31.9% in 500µlL-1 ethanol-treated blueberries inoculated with A. alternata and B. cinerea, respectively, after 8days of storage. Moreover, the surface structure and ultrastructure of 500µlL-1 ethanol-treated blueberry fruit cells were more integrated than those of other treatments. The findings of the present study suggest that ethanol could be used as an activator of defense responses in blueberry against Alternaria and Botrytis rots, by activating DREs, having practical application value in the preservation of postharvest fruit and vegetables.

BACKGROUND: Blueberry is universally acknowledged as a kind of berry rich in antioxidants. Cold plasma, an emerging non-thermal treatment technology, has been proved to be able to maintain or improve the antioxidant level while inactivating the microorganisms on the surface of fruits and vegetables. Postharvest blueberries were treated with atmospheric cold plasma (ACP; 12 kV, 5 kHz) for 0 s (Control), 30 s (ACP-30), 60 s (ACP-60), and 90 s (ACP-90) in this study, and the effects of ACP on the antimicrobial properties, antioxidant activities, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production were investigated during storage at 4 ± 1 °C for 40 days. RESULTS: Total aerobic bacteria and mold populations on ACP-treated blueberries decreased significantly in a time-dependent manner (P < 0.05), and decreased by 0.34-1.24 and 0.57-0.87 log10 CFU g-1 respectively on ACP-60-treated blueberries during storage. The decay rate of blueberries was decreased by 5.8-11.7% and the decrease of blueberry firmness was slowed down by ACP-60. But the total phenol, anthocyanin, and ascorbic acid contents increased, and superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase activities were enhanced in ACP-treated blueberries. The free radical scavenging activity and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) were enhanced. Hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) and superoxide anion (O2 - ) production rates declined by 27.3% and 41.3% at day 40 of storage, respectively. CONCLUSION: It is suggested that ACP may be a promising non-thermal treatment technology for postharvest sterilization and preservation of blueberry under suitable conditions. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

The aim of this work is to develop an efficient and economical method for the enrichment of total flavonoids from Pteris ensiformis Burm. extracts. Resin screening, adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms and thermodynamics were successively researched prior to the dynamic adsorption and desorption tests. NKA-II resin was chosen as the best adsorbent, and the adsorption data were best described by the pseudo-second-order kinetics model and Langmuir isotherm model. The optimum enrichment conditions were as follows: for adsorption the total flavonoids concentration, flow rate and volume of sample were 1.84 mg/mL, 2 BV/h and 5 BV, respectively, and for desorption the flavonoids-loaded NKA-II resin column was desorbed by 7 BV of 50% ethanol at a rate of 2 BV/h. The product had a 6.63-fold higher total flavonoids content than crude extracts, and the recovery yield of total flavonoids was 80.65%. Furthermore, flavonoids-enriched extracts exhibited higher in vitro scavenging activity against superoxide anion radical and hydroxyl radical than crude extracts. In addition, higher antiproliferative activity of flavonoids-enriched extracts against MCF-7 and HepG-2 cell lines was also found as compared to the crude extracts. The developed method is appropriate for large-scale enrichment of total flavonoids from Pteris ensiformis Burm. extracts in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

For the full development and utilization of Sophora tonkinensis Gagnep., this study was primarily intended to established a simple and efficient approach for the preparative purification of total flavonoids from S. tonkinensis by macroporous resin column chromatography (MRCC). The adsorption and desorption characteristics of the total flavonoids on ten macroporous resins were first studied, and AB-8 resin was chosen as the most suitable, and the adsorption data were best fitted to the pseudo-second-order kinetics model and Langmuir isotherm model. Furthermore, the technological parameters for the purification of the total flavonoids were optimized using column chromatography. After a sample one-step purification procedure, the content of the total flavonoids increased by about 4.76-fold from 12.14% to 57.82%, with a recovery yield of 84.93%. In addition, the comparative analysis of the flavonoid extracts before and after purification was performed by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with photodiode-array detection (HPLC-PAD). The results showed that the contents of six major flavonoids in the purified product were all higher than before the purification. Therefore, the AB-8 MRCC established in this work was a promising method for the industrial-scale purification of the total flavonoids from S. tonkinensis.

BACKGROUND: Blueberries are appreciated by consumers for their rich natural antioxidants and their good nutritional and health functions. However, blueberries are very perishable due to microbial infection and metabolic aging after harvest. Ethanol has been shown to have the effect of controlling postharvest microorganisms and improving storage quality of fruits and vegetables. This study aimed to clarify the effects of ethanol on the appearance quality and flavor attributes of postharvest blueberries. Blueberries were treated with ethanol (250, 500, and 1000 µL L-1 ) and stored at 0 ± 0.5 °C, 90% relative humidity (RH), for 40 days. RESULTS: The results indicated that ethanol treatment could slow the decline of blueberry firmness and reduce the decay rate significantly in a dose-dependent manner. The soluble solids content (SSC) and titratable acidity (TA) of ethanol-treated blueberries increased significantly (P < 0.05), improving the taste of the blueberries. The activities of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and pyruvate decarboxylase (PDC) were stimulated with the accumulation of ethanol in blueberries, which catalyzed the conversion of ethanol, acetaldehyde, and pyruvate, increasing their levels in blueberries. More volatiles, especially esters, were detected in ethanol-treated blueberries, e.g. methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, ethyl propanoate, ethyl isobutyrate, ethyl 2-methylbutanoate, ethyl isovalerate, ethyl 3-methyl-2-butenoate, diethyl sebacate, and isopropyl myristate. CONCLUSION: The preservative effect of ethanol on blueberry was significantly affected by ethanol concentration. In this study, the effect of 500 µL L-1 ethanol fumigation on blueberry was the best in terms of appearance quality (firmness and decay rate) and flavor attributes (SSC, TA, and volatiles). © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

The objective of this study was to develop an ultrasonic-assisted procedure for the extraction of total phenolics from Citrus aurantium L. blossoms (CAB) and evaluate the free radical scavenging activity and anti-HMG-CoA reductase activity of the total phenolics. In this work, a Box- Behnken design based on single-factor experiments was used to explore the optimum extraction process. Under the optimum conditions (extraction solvent 70.31% ethanol, extraction temperature 61.94 °C, extraction time 51.73 min, and liquid-to-solid ratio 35.63 mL/g), the extraction yield of total phenolics was 95.84 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g dry matter (DM), which was highly consistent with the theoretical value (96.12 mg GAE/g DM). The higher contents of total phenolics and five main phenolic compounds obtained from the optimized ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) proved its efficiency when compared with conventional heat reflux extraction (HRE). The total phenolic extract showed excellent free radical scavenging properties against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH·), 2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) radical (ABTS+·), hydroxyl radical (·OH) and superoxide anion radical (·O2-), with IC50 values of 197.007, 83.878, 218.643, and 158.885 µg/mL, respectively; the extracts also showed good inhibition of ß-hydroxy-ß-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase (HMG-CoA reductase) activity, with an IC50 value of 117.165 µg/mL. Total phenolics from CAB could be a potential source of natural free radical scavenger and HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor.

Amentoflavone (AMF), an abundant natural biflavonoid found in many medicinal plants, displays various beneficial effects including anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative and anti-cancer. Despite the extensive studies on pharmacological activities, the toxicity or undesirable effects of AMF are rarely reported. In this study, the inhibitory effects of AMF on human UDP-glucuronosyltransferases (UGTs) were carefully investigated. AMF displayed strong inhibition towards most of human UGTs including UGT1A1, 1A3, 1A4, 1A6, 1A7, 1A8, 1A9, 1A10, 2B4 and 2B17, with the IC50 values ranging from 0.12 µM to 16.81 µM. Inhibition constants (Ki) of AMF against various human UGTs varied from 0.29 µM to 11.51 µM. Further investigation demonstrated that AMF was a noncompetitive inhibitor of UGT1A1 mediated NCHN-O-glucuronidation but functioned as a competitive inhibitor of UGT1A1 mediated 4-MU-O-glucuronidation. In addition, AMF was a competitive inhibitor of UGT1A4 mediated TFP-N-glucuronidation in both UGT1A4 and human liver microsomes, while functioned as a competitive inhibitor of UGT1A9 mediated propofol or 4-MU-O-glucuronidation. These findings demonstrated that AMF was a strong and broad-spectrum natural inhibitor of most human UGTs, which might bring potential risks of herb-drug interactions (HDIs) via UGT inhibition. Additionally, this study provided novel insights into the underlying mechanism of AMF-associated toxicity from the perspective of UGT inhibition.

BACKGROUND: Food preservation is critical for keeping fresh-cut products fresh, nutritious, safe, attractive and available for consumers. To improve the safety and quality of fresh-cut fruits, 15 essential oils (EOs) were screened to test the antimicrobial activity against Listeria monocytogenes (LM), Salmonella typhimurium (ST), Staphylococcus aureus (SA) and Escherichia coli O157:H7 (EC O157:H7). The effect of alginate-based edible coating (EC) incorporating different concentrations thyme oil on fresh-cut 'Red Fuji' apples was investigated. RESULTS: Results showed that thyme oil, cinnamon oil and oregano oil were more effective in inhibiting the microbes than other EOs. The result showed that the combined usage of 0.5 µL mL-1 thyme oil incorporated with alginate-based EC could significantly inhibit the microbial growth, respiration, weight loss, firmness and browning of fresh-cut 'Red Fuji' apples. CONCLUSION: The edible coating and natural additives like thyme oil could be used to preserve the quality of fresh-cut fruits. It revealed that EC incorporated with 0.5 µL mL-1 thyme oil can be a safe preservative for fresh-cut apples. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry.

In this study, the effects of oligochitosan treatment on controlling postharvest diseases in Dongxue peach ( Prunus Persica L. Batsch, cv Dongxuemi) were examined and the possible underlying mechanisms were discussed. Results showed that the disease incidence and lesion area in peach fruit inoculated with Monilinia fructicola and Penicillium expansum were all remarkably reduced by oligochitosan treatment. Oligochitosan treatment inhibited spore germination and mycelial growth of the two fungi in vitro. Oligochitosan treatment also induced upregulation of the salicylic acid signalling pathway-related genes (NPR1, PR1 and phenylalanine ammonia lyase) and enhanced the levels of total phenolics, flavonoids and lignin in peach. Meanwhile, enzymatic activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, polyphenoloxidase, ascorbate peroxidase and phenylalanine ammonia lyase also increased. These findings suggest that the effects of oligochitosan on the disease control of peach fruit may be associated with its direct antimicrobial effects as well as increasing antioxidant, phenylpropanoid metabolism and accumulating antifungal compounds by activating the salicylic acid-dependent pathway.

Two new dihydrochalcone enantiomers (+)-1 and (-)-1, along with eight known compounds 3-10, were obtained from Pteris ensiformis. The planar structures were determined on the basis of extensive 1D and 2DNMR and HRESIMS. The resolution of (+)-1 and (-)-1 was achieved by chiral HPLC analysis. The absolute configurations of (+)-1 and (-)-1 were established by the bulkiness rule using Rh2(O2CCF3)4-induced circular dichroism (ICD) method. Compounds (+)-1, (-)-1, 8, 9 and 10 exhibited the inhibitory assay of NO production in mouse macrophages stimulated by LPS, with IC50 values of 2.0, 2.5, 8.0, 9.5 and 5.6 µM, respectively. Otherwise, compound 10 showed moderate cytotoxic activity against HCT-116, HepG-2 and BGC-823 cell lines with IC50 values of 3.0, 10.5 and 6.3 µM, respectively.

RESUMEN

The materials were extracted by 95% ethanol, and the extracting solution was isolated by kinds of chromatographic columns including polyamide, MCI, preparative MPLC, and preparative HPLC. Eight diterpenes and two sesquiterpenes were isolated from the plant. On analysis of ESI-MS and NMR spectroscopic data, the structures were established as ent-3ß-hydroxy-kaur-16-en-19-al (1), 4-epi-kaurenic acid (2), mitrekaurenone (3), 7ß,16α,17-trihydroxy-ent-kauran-19-oic acid (4), crotonkinin E (5), crotonkinin F (6), pterisolic acid A (7), pterisolic acid C (8), (2R)-pterosin P (9), and dehydropterosin B (10). Compounds 1-6 were obtained from Pteris for the first time, and compounds 7-10 were obtained from P. ensiformis for the first time. Compounds 5-8 showed moderate activity against HCT-116, HepG2 and BGC-823 cell lines, separately.

RESUMEN

Twelve quinolizidine alkaloids were isolated from Sophora tonkinensis by means of silica gel, preparative MPLC, and preparative HPLC. On analysis of NMR spectroscopic data, their structures were established as 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-4-(3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenyl)-3,4-dehydroquinolizidine(1), lanatine A(2), cermizines C(3), senepodines G(4), senepodines H(5), jussiaeiines A(6), jussiaeiines B(7),(+)-5α-hydroxyoxysophocarpine(8),(-)-12ß-hydroxyoxysophocarpine(9),(-)-clathrotropine(10),(-)-cytisine(11), and (-)-N-methylcytisine(12), respectively. Compounds 1-7 were first isolated from Sophora L. plant. In the in vitro assays,the isolated compounds 1, 3, 6-10 exhibited potent activity against CVB3 with IC50 of 6.40, 3.25, 4.66, 3.21, 0.12, 0.23 and 1.60, and with selective index values(SI=TC50/IC50)of 12.0, 5.6, 13.0, 15.1, 50.1, 26.2, and 23.6, respectively. Compounds 1, 3, and 7 exhibited activity against staphylococcus aureus(ATCC 29213)with MICvalues of 8.0, 3.5, 6.0 g•L⁻¹, respectively. Compounds 1, 3, 7, and 12 exhibited activity against staphylococcus aureus(ATCC 33591)with MIC values of 18.0, 7.5, 8.0, 12.0 g•L⁻¹, respectively. Compounds 2, 6, 7 exhibited activity against Escherichia coli(ATCC 25922) with MIC values of 1.0, 3.2, 0.8 g•L⁻¹.

Vapours of organic matters were determined qualitatively employed with ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy. Vapours of organic matters were detected using ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer employing polyethylene film as medium, the ultraviolet and visible absorption spectra of vegetable oil vapours of soybean oil, sunflower seed oil, peanut oil, rapeseed oil, sesame oil, cotton seed oil, tung tree seed oil, and organic compound vapours of acetone, ethyl acetate, 95% ethanol, glacial acetic acid were obtained. Experimental results showed that spectra of the vegetable oil vapour and the organic compound vapour could be obtained commendably, since ultra violet and visible spectrum of polyethylene film could be deducted by spectrograph zero setting. Different kinds of vegetable oils could been distinguished commendably in the spectra since the λ(max), λ(min), number of absorption peak, position, inflection point in the ultra violet and visible spectra obtained from the vapours of the vegetable oils were all inconsistent, and the vapours of organic compounds were also determined perfectly. The method had a good reproducibility, the ultraviolet and visible absorption spectra of the vapours of sunflower seed oil in 10 times determination were absolutely the same. The experimental result indicated that polyethylene film as a kind of medium could be used for qualitative analysis of ultraviolet and visible absorption spectroscopy. The method for determination of the vapours of the vegetable oils and organic compounds had the peculiarities of fast speed analysis, well reproducibility, accuracy and reliability and low cost, and so on. Ultraviolet and visible absorption spectrum of organic vapour could provide feature information of material vapour and structural information of organic compound, and provide a novel test method for identifying vapour of compound and organic matter.

The present work was undertaken to examine the influence of grape seed extract (GS) and tea polyphenols (TP), as natural preservatives, combined with chitosan (Ch), on the quality of red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) fillets during refrigerated storage. Two different treatments (Ch+GS and Ch+TP) and a control were prepared. The samples were stored (4 ± 1°C) for 20 days and the sampling was done at 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 days. Microbiological, physicochemical and sensory attributes were periodically assessed. The results indicated that the two pretreatments could more effectively maintain quality and could extend the shelf life by 6-8 days compared with the control group during refrigerated storage.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correlations between traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome elements and neurologic function and between them and coagulation function in patients with acute cerebral infarction (ACI). METHODS: Two hundred and twenty-three patients with ACI were enrolled. The syndromes of this disease were scored according to Stroke Diagnostic Criteria for Differentiation of Syndromes. Neurologic function deficit score (NDS) was scored according to stroke scale of the National Institutes of Health (NIHSS). The prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and fibrinogen (FIB) contents were detected. The correlations between TCM syndrome elements and NDS and between them and coagulation function were investigated. RESULTS: Two hundred and twenty-three patients with ACI were divided into six syndromes: wind syndrome (n=147, 65.92%), fire syndrome ( n=100, 44.84%), tan syndrome (n=123, 55.16%), blood stasis syndrome (n=78, 34.98%), deficiency of qi syndrome (n=31, 13.90%), and yin deficiency causing hyperactivity of yang syndrome (n=25, 11.21%). The wind, tan and fire syndromes were the main syndrome elements related to ACI. The scores of wind, fire, tan and deficiency of qi syndromes were positively related to NDS (r1=0.207, P1=0.002; r2=0.284, P2=0.000; r3=0.245, P3=0.000; r4=0.152, P4=0.023). The score of deficiency of qi syndrome was negatively correlated with PT (r=-0.170, P=0.011); and the scores of tan, blood stasis, and deficiency of qi syndromes were negatively correlated with APTT (r1=-0.182, P1=0.006; r2=-0.148, P2=0.027; r3=-0.211, P3=0.001).Other syndromes were not correlated to NDS or coagulation factors. CONCLUSION: The neurologic function deficiency due to ACI is more likely influenced by wind, tan, and fire syndromes; deficiency of qi syndrome also has some effects. The syndromes of tan, blood stasis, and deficiency of qi are closely correlated with coagulation function, and their scores may reflect the clotting function in patients with ACI.

BACKGROUND: Fresh-cut eggplants, as other vegetables, have relatively short shelf life because of the large amount of tissue disruption and increased metabolism. There is a very rapid onset of enzymatic browning and tissue softening with consequent decrease in sensorial and nutritional quality. To reduce respiration and maintain the quality, various treatments have been applied to find the optimum conditions that provide more fresh and natural fresh-cut produce after minimal processing. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of ethanol vapour treatment on physiological and quality attributes of fresh-cut eggplant during the extension of shelf life. RESULTS: The fresh-cut eggplant treated with ethanol vapour showed that respiration rate and occurrence of enzymatic browning were reduced, and higher total phenol content was maintained during 8 days of storage at 10 degrees C. The polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase in fresh-cut eggplant were also inhibited significantly by ethanol treatment. The ethanol treatment reduced the weight loss and maintained the integrity of cell membranes, as confirmed by the low value of electrolyte leakage. CONCLUSION: The ethanol treatment applied for fresh-cut eggplant was a practical approach to reduce the activity of physiological metabolism and maintain the fresh quality of fresh-cut eggplant. The experimental results revealed that ethanol treatment was effective for extending the shelf life of fresh-cut eggplant as a cheap, environmentally acceptable method.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical effect of TCM treatment for dissolving phlegm and dispelling stasis (DP-DS) on acute cerebral infarction (ACI) and its influences on plasma protein C and S and soluble thrombomodulin (TM). METHODS: One hundred and twenty-two patients were randomly assigned to two groups, the treated group (62 cases) and the control group (60 cases). They were all treated with the conventional treatment, and DP-DS treatment was given to the treated group additionally. The treatment course was 14 days. The changes in scores of TCM syndrome and neurofunction impairment (NIHSS), levels of plasma protein C (PC), protein S (PS) and TM before and after treatment in the two groups were observed. RESULTS: The total effective rate of TCM syndrome in the treated group was higher than that in the control group (P= 0.00). After treatment, NIHSS in the two groups was significantly different (P=0.00), and the score in the treated group was superior to that in the control group (P = 0.00). NIHSS score and levels of PC and PS were improved in both groups (P = 0.024, 0.028), and the improvement of PC in the treated group was superior to that in the control group respectively (P = 0.049). But no significant change of TM was shown after treatment. CONCLUSION: TCM DP-DS treatment shows significant effect in improving TCM syndrome and neurofunction impairment of the patients with acute cerebral infarction, and raise the levels of PC and PS.
