To better understand the functional mechanism of four types of tea (green tea, black tea, jasmine tea, and dark tea) on the quality of stewed beef, changes in quality characteristics, proteomics, and metabolomics were investigated. Adding these four tea types decreased the pH value, L* value, shear force, and hardness of the stewed beef. Among these groups, black tea (BT) significantly improved the tenderness of the stewed beef. They have substantially impacted pathways related to protein oxidative phosphorylation, fatty acid degradation, amino acid degradation, and peroxisomes in stewed beef. The study identified that Myosin-2, Starch binding domain 1, Heat shock protein beta-6, and Myosin heavy chain four are significantly correlated with the quality characteristics of tea-treated stewed beef, making them potential biomarkers. Green tea (GT), black tea (BT), jasmine tea (JT), and dark tea (DT) led to the downregulation of 20, 36, 38, and 31 metabolites, respectively, which are lipids and lipid-like molecules in the stewed beef. The co-analysis of proteomics and metabolomics revealed that differential proteins significantly impacted metabolites associated with carbohydrates, amino acids, lipids, and other nutrients. This study determined the effects of four types of tea on the quality of stewed beef and their underlying mechanisms, providing valuable insights for applying of tea in meat products. At the same time, it can offer new ideas for developing fresh meat products.

In this study, we analyzed the tea polyphenol composition, volatile flavor composition and storage stability of steamed beef with black tea. The molecular docking and dynamics were used to elucidate the interaction mechanism between the active components of black tea and myofibrillar proteins. The highest content of caffeine (CAF) was found in black tea steamed beef products, followed by catechin (C), epicatechin gallate (ECG), epicatechin gallate (EGCG) and theaflavins (TF). Steamed beef with black tea showed low ΔE* value, low TBARS value, low carbonyl content as well as high sulfhydryl content during storage. The addition of C, CAF, ECG, EGCG and TF enhanced the oxidative stability of myofibrillar protein. In this study, the effects of active components of black tea on the oxidative stability of myofibrillar protein and their interactions were determined, which could provide a reference for the application of black tea and its active components in meat products. At the same time, it can provide new ideas for the development of new meat products.

Background: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has been widely used to investigate the brain effect of acupuncture point Stomach 36 (ST36, Zusanli). However, inconsistent results have hindered our understanding of the neural mechanisms of acupuncture at ST36. Objective: To perform a meta-analysis of fMRI studies on acupuncture at ST36 to assess the brain atlas of acupuncture at ST36 from available studies. Method: Based on a preregistered protocol in PROSPERO (CRD42019119553), a large set of databases was searched up to August 9, 2021, without language restrictions. Peak coordinates were extracted from clusters that showed significant signal differences before and after acupuncture treatment. A meta-analysis was performed using seed-based d mapping with permutation of subject images (SDM-PSI), a newly improved meta-analytic method. Results: A total of 27 studies (27 ST36) were included. This meta-analysis found that ST36 could activate the left cerebellum, the bilateral Rolandic operculum, the right supramarginal gyrus, and the right cerebellum. Functional characterizations showed that acupuncture at ST36 was mainly associated with action and perception. Conclusion: Our results provide a brain atlas for acupuncture at ST36, which, besides offering a better understanding of the underlying neural mechanisms, also provides the possibility of future precision therapies.

BACKGROUND: Although acupuncture is widely used to improve cognitive and memory in the amnesic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) patients with impressive effectiveness, its neural mechanism remains largely unclear. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to explore functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) mechanism of acupuncture for aMCI. METHODS: A randomized, controlled, single-blind research was performed. A total of 46 aMCI patients were randomly assigned into verum and sham acupuncture group, who received a total of 24 times treatments (3 times/week, 8 weeks). Clinical evaluation and fMRI scanning were performed at baseline and after treatment for all aMCI patients. The interaction effects and inter-group effects of regional homogeneity (ReHo) were performed using mixed effect models, and the correlations between clinical improvement and neuroimaging changes before and after verum acupuncture treatment were analyzed using Pearson correlations. RESULTS: As a result, interaction effects showed increased ReHo value in left dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), increased functional connectivity between left DLPFC and left precuneus, and decreased functional connectivity between left DLPFC and left inferior temporal gyrus after verum acupuncture but inversely after sham acupuncture in the aMCI. Condition effects showed increased ReHo in right lingual gyrus, and bilateral post-central gyrus after verum and sham acupuncture in the aMCI. In addition, the changed Montreal Cognitive Assessment scores in verum acupuncture group were significantly correlated with changed ReHo values in left DLPFC. CONCLUSION: Together, our findings further confirmed that acupuncture could be used as a promising complementary therapy for aMCI by modulating function of left DLPFC to improve cognitive symptoms.

Carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) extensively present in thermal-processed foods. Sodium nitrite (NaNO2) and tea polyphenols (TP) are commonly used in meat processing, while the properties and cytotoxicity of CNPs existed in fried pork added NaNO2 and TP remain unknown. The results showed that compared with no addition (NA, 4.008 ± 0.43 nm) in soaked pork, the smaller diameters of CNPs (0.968 ± 0.44 nm) were found in CNPs-NaNO2-20 group (addition 20 mg/kg NaNO2), the larger (155.8 ± 7.30 nm) in CNPs-TP-100 group (addition 100 mg/kg TP). The diameter of CNPs was positively correlated with the added concentration. CNPs decreased the viability of HL-7702 cells. Compared with NA group, cell viability in CNPs-NaNO2-80 group was obviously (p < 0.05) decreased by 3.17%, while the CNPs-TP-200 group was 13.84% higher. CNPs could block cells growth by arresting cells in S-phase and increasing cellular ROS levels. CNPs generated in fired pork added 200 mg/kg TP in soaking showed less cytotoxicity.

BACKGROUND: The intensity of electrical acupoint stimulation such as electroacupuncture (EA) and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is regulated by the observation of skin shivering or the participant's comfort response. However, the specific intensity and spatial scope following EA or TENS stimulation are unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to test the stimulatory current intensities of lower and upper sensation thresholds in TENS- and EA-based treatment of Bell's palsy patients. Also, the spatial scope of the stimulation at these current intensities was simulated and measured quantitatively. METHODS: A total of 19 Bell's palsy patients were recruited. Six acupoints on the affected side of the face were stimulated by TENS and EA successively at 30-min intervals. During the stimulation, the current intensity was regulated gradually from 0 to 20 mA, and we simultaneously measured the lower (sensory) and upper (tolerability) sensations. After the treatment by TENS and EA, the modified Chinese version of the Massachusetts General Hospital Acupuncture Sensation Scales (C-MMASS) was applied to survey the de-qi sensations during stimulation. Additionally, we analyzed the correlation between current intensities and C-MMASS and comfort scores. Finite element models were established to depict the spatial distribution of electric field gradients at the lower and upper thresholds. RESULTS: The mean sensory and tolerability thresholds of TENS were 3.91-4.37 mA and 12.33-16.35 mA, respectively. The median sensory and tolerability thresholds of EA were 0.2 mA and 2.0-3.2 mA, respectively. We found a significant correlation between total C-MMASS scores and the current intensities at the tolerability threshold of TENS. The finite element model showed that the activated depths of TENS and EA at the lower threshold were 3.8 and 7 mm, respectively, whereas those at the upper threshold were both 13.8 mm. The cross-sectional diameter of the activated area during TENS was 2.5-4 times larger than that during EA. CONCLUSION: This pilot study provided a method for exploring the current intensity at which the de-qi sensations can be elicited by TENS or EA. The finite element analysis potentially revealed the spatial scope of the electrical stimulation at a specific current intensity.

Mandarin (Citrus reticulata L.) essential oil (MEO) reportedly displays excellent antimicrobial properties. In this study, MEO was loaded into chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs). The characteristics, antibacterial properties and benefit in pork preservation of MEO-CSNPs were evaluated. The MEO-CSNPs displayed an excellent encapsulation efficiency (EE) (67.32%-82.35%), the particle size values of 131.3 nm-161.9 nm, and the absolute zeta potential values above 30 mV. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed that the MEO was incorporated into CSNPs without requiring a chemical reaction, the antibacterial activity of the MEO remained. Furthermore, the damage of MEO-chitosan nanoemulsions (MEO-CSs) to the cell membranes of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) was confirmed by the change of bacterial cell morphology. The anti-biofilm assays verified that the MEO-CSs substantially inhibited biofilm formation and destroyed the mature biofilms. MEO-CSs were also applied to pork, proving a great potential for pork preservation. This study provides a potential approach for developing and utilizing MEO-CSs as natural antimicrobial agents in the food industry.

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture has been found to be an effective treatment for insomnia. but it is not clear whether acupuncture is just a placebo effect. We aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of acupuncture and sham/placebo acupuncture. METHODS: We searched the Central Register of Controlled Trials of Medline, EMBASE, and Cochrane from database inception through March 16, 2020 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared acupuncture therapy with sham/placebo acupuncture or no treatment. Restricted to English language. Cochrane risk of bias tool was used to analyze risk of bias of the included randomized controlled trials (RCT). Data analysis was performed with Review Manager 5.3. RESULTS: A total of 15 studies involving 1108 patients. Meta-analysis results showed that acupuncture therapy was superior to sham/placebo acupuncture in terms of improving Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), insomnia severity index (ISI), total sleep time (TST), sleep-onset latency (SOL), wake after sleep onset (WASO), sleep efficiency (SE), even during the follow-up period, acupuncture therapy was superior to sham/placebo acupuncture on PSQI. Due to the obvious heterogeneity of the study, (1) for primary outcome (PSQI):subgroup analysis based on the type of acupuncture and placebo acupuncture showed that acupuncture was superior to placebo acupuncture lower PSQI: acupuncture was superior to placebo acupuncture (3RCTs,MD = -7.34,95% [-8.02,-6.66],I2 = 86%) and minimal acupuncture (5RCTs,MD = -3.29,95% [-3.95, -2.63],I2 = 53%), Auricular acupressure was superior to placebo acupuncture (1RCT,MD = -4.16,95% [-6.57, -1.75]), minimal acupuncture was superior to electroacupuncture (2RCTs, MD = 0.70,95%CI [0.52, 0.87],I2 = 0%), while there was no significant difference between auricular acupressure and minimal acupuncture, between electroacupuncture and placebo acupuncture. trials). (2) for secondary outcome (ISI,TST,WASO,SE,SOL).ISI, the ISI score of minimal acupuncture was lower than that of electroacupuncture (2RCTs,MD = 0.80,95%CI [0.55, 1.04],I2 = 0), acupuncture was lower placebo acupuncture (1RCT, MD = -7.89,95%CI [-10.15, -5.63]), There was no significant difference between electroacupuncture and minimal acupuncture. Conclusion: Based on the outcomes included in this study, the efficacy of acupuncture was superior to that of placebo acupuncture in treating insomnia. Types of acupuncture therapy and placebo may underestimate the efficacy of acupuncture in different ways.

BACKGROUND: Premature ovarian failure (POF) is commonly treated with hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Many patients with POF choose acupuncture as a complementary therapy over HRT, due to possible adverse reactions. This systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) compares the efficacy of different forms of acupuncture therapies for POF. METHODS: Seven databases including PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Embase, Wanfang database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure database, VIP Chinese Science, and Chinese Biomedical Database were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of various acupuncture treatments for POF. This time spanned from the date of database inception to January 13, 2020. RevMan 5.3 was used to assess the bias risk of the studies. A NMA of the included studies was performed using Stata14.0. RESULTS: A total of 408 items were searched in this study, and finally this NMA included 16 RCTS, involving 1,307 patients. It showed that acupuncture (OR:1.35,95%1.24 to 1.47) has the best effectiveness among the four acupuncture (standardized mean difference [SMD]-16.30,95% -31.33 to -1.28) is the most effective and the best in reducing follicle-stimulating hormone levels among the four acupuncture treatments. Acupuncture (SMD 26.67,95%5.95 to 47.40) and acupoint embedding (SMD41.14,95%11.90 to 70.37) were ranked in the top 2 positions, in improving estradiol, whereas acupuncture (SMD-4.90,95% -8.10 to -1.70) was than acupoint embedding and HRT, in reducing luteinizing hormone level. In addition, our conclusions have not changed significantly after the sensitivity analysis.Protocol registration number: CRD42020150508. CONCLUSION: With clinical evidence summarized by NMA, it is observed that acupuncture is the most promising therapy for improving menopausal symptoms, decreasing serum follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone level. Therefore, acupuncture could be effective for patients with POF, who are intolerant to the adverse effects of hormone replacement therapy or who would prefer non-drug therapies. Further multi-center and high-quality RCT studies should be conducted to make our conclusion more rigorous.

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture has been found to be an effective treatment for functional dyspepsia (FD). Currently, several types of acupuncture have been developed but it is not clear which type is suitable for FD. Currently, doctors often rely on experience to decide which form of acupuncture to apply. Herein, we employed network meta-analysis (NMA) to compare the effectiveness of various methods of acupuncture in the treatment of functional dyspepsia. METHODS: We searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of acupuncture treatments for functional dyspepsia in seven databases; PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Embase, Wanfang database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database, Chinese Science and Technique Journals (CQVIP), and Chinese Biomedical Database (CBM) from the date of database inception to October 10, 2019. Cochrane risk of bias tool was used to analyze the risk of bias of the included RCTs. Pairwise meta-analyses were performed with RevMan 5.3 and the network meta-analysis of the included RCTs was performed using the frequentist framework. RESULTS: A total of 35 studies involving 3301 patients and 10 interventions were eligible for this study. NMA results showed that five types of acupuncture (manual acupuncture, acupoint application, moxibustion, acupoint catgut embedding, and warm acupuncture alone) all were superior to prokinetics (itopride, mosapride, and domperidone) and sham acupuncture in terms of improving the symptoms of functional dyspepsia. Specifically, manual acupuncture and electroacupuncture were more effective in improving the MOS 36 Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) compared to itopride and sham acupuncture, and electroacupuncture was the best among the three acupuncture therapies (acupuncture, electroacupuncture, and acupoint catgut embedding). Moxibustion and manual acupuncture were more effective in improving Nepean Dyspepsia Life Quality Index (NDLQI) compared to itopride, domperidone, and sham acupuncture; moxibustion ranks first among the three acupuncture therapies (acupuncture, electroacupuncture, moxibustion). CONCLUSIONS: These results showed that manual acupuncture alone was the most effective therapy for FD. It should, therefore, be considered as an alternative treatment for FD patients who are unresponsive to prokinetics or intolerant to the adverse effects of prokinetics. We recommend further multiple centers and high-quality RCT studies to confirm the present findings.

Melatonin receptors MT1 and MT2 are involved in synchronizing circadian rhythms and are important targets for treating sleep and mood disorders, type-2 diabetes and cancer. Here, we performed large scale structure-based virtual screening for new ligand chemotypes using recently solved high-resolution 3D crystal structures of agonist-bound MT receptors. Experimental testing of 62 screening candidates yielded the discovery of 10 new agonist chemotypes with sub-micromolar potency at MT receptors, with compound 21 reaching EC50 of 0.36 nM. Six of these molecules displayed selectivity for MT2 over MT1. Moreover, two most potent agonists, including 21 and a close derivative of melatonin, 28, had dramatically reduced arrestin recruitment at MT2, while compound 37 was devoid of Gi signaling at MT1, implying biased signaling. This study validates the suitability of the agonist-bound orthosteric pocket in the MT receptor structures for the structure-based discovery of selective agonists.

Objectives: To summarize development processes and research hotspots of MRI research on acupuncture and to provide new insights for researchers in future studies. Methods: Publications regarding MRI on acupuncture from inception to 2020 were downloaded from the Web of Science Core Collection. VOSviewer 1.6.15 and CiteSpace V software were used for bibliometric analyses. The main analyses include collaboration analyses between countries/institutions/authors, co-occurrence analysis between keywords, as well as analyses on keyword bursts, citation references, and clusters of references. Results: A total of 829 papers were obtained with a continually increased trend over time. The most productive country and institution in this field were the People's Republic of China (475) and KyungHee University (70), respectively. Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine (83) was the most productive journal, and Neuroimage (454) was the most co-cited journal. Dhond's et al. (2008) article (co-citation counts: 58) and Napadow's et al. (2005) article (centrality: 0.21) were the most representative and symbolic references, with the highest co-citation number and centrality, respectively. Jie Tian had the highest number of publications (35) and Kathleen K S Hui was the most influential author (280 co-citations). The four hot topics in MRI on acupuncture were acupuncture, fMRI, pain, and stimulation. The three frontier topics were connectivity, modulation, and fMRI. Based on the clustering of co-cited documents, chronic low back pain, sham electro-acupuncture treatment, and clinical research were the main research directions. Conclusion: This study provides an in-depth perspective for MRI research on acupuncture and provides researchers with valuable information to determine the current status, hot spots, and frontier trends of MRI research on acupuncture.

BACKGROUND: Viral myocarditis is defined as viral infection of myocardial tissue leading to impaired heart function and heart failure. Accumulating evidences have shown that arrhythmia is one of important complicating diseases of viral myocarditis causing increased mortality and morbidity. There are no effective treatment for the viral infection and complicating arrhythmia. PURPOSE: This study investigated the effect and mechanism of Astragalus Root dry extract (ARDE) on arrhythmia induced by CVB3 in mice. METHODS: The mice and HL-1 cells were treated with CVB3 and ARDE. Reciprocal regulation of Cx43 and miR-1 were observed in the CVB3 infected mouse myocardium and culture HL-1 cells. RESULTS: CVB3 IP injection increased immune cell infiltration in mouse left ventricle and caused irregular arrhythmia. ARDE treatment prevented the increase of immune cell infiltration and arrhythmia. Overexpression of miR-1 significantly inhibited both endogenous Cx43 expression and Cx43 3'UTR luciferase activity in HL-1 cells. Mutation of census binding site of +1586-1593 bp not +465-472 bp in Cx43 3'UTR luciferase resulted in abolishment of miR-1 inhibitory effects in HL-1 cells. Loss-of- function of miR-1 restored CVB3-induced Cx43 expression reduction in cultured HL-1 cells. The presence of ARDE attenuated the augmented miR-1 induced by CVB3 infection in vivo and in vitro. CONCLUSION: This study identified that CVB3 infection reduced Cx43 expression by elevating miR-1 level in mouse viral myocarditis. For the first time, ARDE was shown to prevent arrhythmia, and rescue CVB3-induced endogenous Cx43 expression by regulating miR-1 level.

BACKGROUND: Aspergillus cristatus is the dominant fungus involved in the fermentation of Chinese Fuzhuan brick tea. Aspergillus cristatus is a homothallic fungus that undergoes a sexual stage without asexual conidiation when cultured in hypotonic medium. The asexual stage is induced by a high salt concentration, which completely inhibits sexual development. The taxon is therefore appropriate for investigating the mechanisms of asexual and sexual reproduction in fungi. In this study, de novo genome sequencing and analysis of transcriptomes during culture under high- and low-osmolarity conditions were performed. These analyses facilitated investigation of the evolution of mating-type genes, which determine the mode of sexual reproduction, in A. cristatus, the response of the high-osmolarity glycerol (HOG) pathway to osmotic stimulation, and the detection of mycotoxins and evaluation of the relationship with the location of the encoding genes. RESULTS: The A. cristatus genome comprised 27.9 Mb and included 68 scaffolds, from which 10,136 protein-coding gene models were predicted. A phylogenetic analysis suggested a considerable phylogenetic distance between A. cristatus and A. nidulans. Comparison of the mating-type gene loci among Aspergillus species indicated that the mode in A. cristatus differs from those in other Aspergillus species. The components of the HOG pathway were conserved in the genome of A. cristatus. Differential gene expression analysis in A. cristatus using RNA-Seq demonstrated that the expression of most genes in the HOG pathway was unaffected by osmotic pressure. No gene clusters associated with the production of carcinogens were detected. CONCLUSIONS: A model of the mating-type locus in A. cristatus is reported for the first time. Aspergillus cristatus has evolved various mechanisms to cope with high osmotic stress. As a fungus associated with Fuzhuan tea, it is considered to be safe under low- and high-osmolarity conditions.

Bacteria play crucial roles in the combined system of substrate addition and C/N control, which has been demonstrated to improve aquaculture production. However, the complexity of surface-attached bacteria on substrates and suspended bacteria in the water column hamper further application of this system. This study firstly applied this combined system into the culture of grass carp, and then explored the relationship between microbial complexes from surface-attached and suspended bacteria in this system and the production of grass carp. In addition, this study investigated bacterial community structures as affected by four C/N ratios using Illumina sequencing technology. The results demonstrated that the weight gain rate and specific growth rate of grass carp in the CN20 group (C/N ratio 20:1) were the highest (P < 0.05), and dietary supplementation of the microbial complex had positive effects on the growth of grass carp (P < 0.05). Sequencing data revealed that, (1) the proportions of Verrucomicrobiae and Rhodobacter (surface-attached), sediminibacterium (suspended), and emticicia (surface-attached and suspended) were much higher in the CN20 group compared with those in the other groups (P < 0.05); (2) Rhodobacter, Flavobacterium, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, Planctomyces, and Cloacibacterium might be important for the microbial colonization on substrates; (3) as the C/N ratio increased, proportions of Hydrogenophaga (surface-attached and suspended), Zoogloea, and Flectobacillus (suspended) increased, but proportions of Bacillus, Clavibacter, and Cellvibro (surface-attached and suspended) decreased. In summary, a combined system of substrate addition and C/N control increased the production of grass carp, and Verrucomicrobiae and Rhodobacter in the surface-attached bacterial community were potential probiotic bacteria that contributed to the enhanced growth of grass carp.

Huaier aqueous extract, the main active constituent of Huaier proteoglycan, has antihepatocarcinoma activity in experimental and clinical settings. However, the potential and associated antihepatoma mechanisms of Huaier extract are not yet fully understood. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to elucidate the inhibitory proliferation effect of Huaier extract on apoptosis and cycle of HepG2 and Bel-7402 cells. Our data demonstrated that incubation with Huaier extract resulted in a marked decrease in cell viability dose-dependently. Flow cytometric analysis showed that a 48 h treatment of Huaier extract caused cell apoptosis. Typical apoptotic nucleus alterations were observed with fluorescence microscope after Hoechst staining. Immunoblot analysis further demonstrated that Huaier extract activated caspase 3 and PARP. Additionally, Huaier extract inhibited the activity of p-ERK, p-p38, and p-JNK in terms of MAPK. Furthermore, Huaier extract induced HCC cells arrest in S phase and decreased the cycle related protein expression of ß-catenin and cyclin D1. Studies with JNK specific inhibitor, SP600125, showed that Huaier extract induced S phase arrest and decreased ß-catenin and cyclin D1 expression via JNK signaling pathway. In conclusion, we verify that Huaier extract causes cell apoptosis and induces hepatocellular carcinoma cells arrest in S phase via JNK pathway, which advances our understanding on the molecular mechanisms of Huaier extract in hepatocarcinoma management.

To evaluate the effect of acupuncture on hemiparesis and quality of life for adults with brain astrocytoma grade II, we conducted a randomized, observer-blinded clinical trial. Fifty-eight patients were randomized to standard rehabilitation (SR) therapy without acupuncture (n = 20), SR plus standard acupuncture (SA) (n = 19), and SR plus individualized acupuncture (IA) (n = 19). SA points were PC6, SP6, HT1, LU5, BL40, and ST36, while a special concept called "connecting and regulation Ren and Du" and "Jin-3-needling" served as IA. This treatment was individualized according to the clinical syndrome. The outcome was measured by the Barthel Index (BI), the Fugl-Meyer scale (FM), and the EORTC Core Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ-C30) with the Brain Cancer Module (BCM20). IA + SR reached significantly higher BI scores than SA + SR, which reached significantly higher BI scores than SR. IA + SR was significantly superior to SA + SR and to SR at the 8th week for the scores of FM motor and sensory assessments and most QLQ-C30-BCM20 items. In conclusion, the individualized acupuncture concept of "connecting and regulating Ren and Du" combined with "Jin-3-needling" offers a promising possibility for the treatment of hemiparesis due to astrocytoma, but further evaluation is mandatory.

BACKGROUND: An increase in the prevalence of thyroid disease has been found with increasing iodine intake, since universal salt iodization (USI) was instituted throughout China in 1996. The aim of this study was to analyze the incidence of thyroid carcinoma (TC) before and after USI in Shenyang, a city of northeastern China. MATERIAL/METHODS: The pathology reports were collected from patients with thyroid diseases who underwent surgery in the First Hospital of China Medical University from January 1, 1992 to December 31, 2009. The detection rate, the constituent ratio, the changes of sex, age, and concomitant thyroid diseases of each histological type of TC were analyzed. RESULTS: The detection rate of TC, papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), and medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) increased; that of follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) decreased; and that of undifferentiated thyroid carcinoma (UTC) showed no change after USI. The constituent ratio of PTC increased, that of FTC and UTC decreased, and that of MTC showed no change after USI. The mean age of female patients with TC decreased after USI. The incidences of PTC complicated with either nodular goiter or chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis increased after USI. CONCLUSIONS: The detection rate of TC increased significantly, PTC predominated in the histological types of TC, and the mean age of female patients with TC decreased after USI. The patients with either nodular goiter or chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis under high iodine intake should be followed up.

According to the Friedel-Crafts and amination reaction, a series of macroporous adsorption resins (MARs) with novel structures were synthesized and identified by the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, and corresponding adsorption behaviors for (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and caffeine (CAF) extracted from waste tea were systemically investigated. Based on evaluation of adsorption kinetics, the kinetic data were well fitted by pseudo-second-order kinetics. Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin-Pyzhev, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms were selected to illustrate the adsorption process of EGCG and CAF on the MARs. Thermodynamic parameters were adopted to explain in-depth information of inherent energetic changes associated with the adsorption process. The effect of temperature on EGCG and CAF adsorption by D101-3 was further expounded. Van der Waals force, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic interaction were the main driving forces for the adsorption of EGCG and CAF on the MARs. This study might provide a scientific reference point to aid the industrial large-scale separation and enrichment of EGCG from the extracts of waste tea using modified MARs.

Cerebral ischemia is one of the most common diseases treated by acupuncture therapeutics. Recent studies indicated that acupuncture treatment by needling the conception and governor vessels had positive effects in promoting neural regeneration in patients after cerebral ischemia injury. Acupuncture intervention could continuously promote the proliferation and differentiation of the neural stem cells in the brain, obviously up-regulate expression of growth factors, accelerate angiogenesis and inhibit apoptosis. Hence, it is necessary to present an exhaustive review on the mechanisms. The present review gives a detailed description of pathological changes of cerebral ischemia and acupuncture intervention applied to the conception and governor vessels, and proposes research prospects in the future.
