In China, Jiang Fructus aurantii (JFA) has attracted increasing interest as a famous traditional herbal medicine and valuable economic food for its valuable medicinal and industrial properties. In the current work, contrasted with conventional extraction techniques, natural flavonoids from JFA (naringin and neohesperidin) were extracted with remarkable effectiveness utilizing a sustainable deep eutectic solvents combined ultrasonic-assisted extraction (DESs-UAE) protocol. The optimal extraction capacity can be achieved by mixing 30 % water with a molar ratio of 1:3 for choline chloride and ethylene glycol, as opposed to the classical extraction solvents of 95 % ethanol, methanol, and water. Moreover, the DESs-UAE extraction programs were also systematically optimized employing Box-Behnken design (BBD) trials, and the eventual findings suggested that the best parameters were a 27 % water content in DES, a 16 mL/g liquid-solid ratio, a 72 min extraction time, and a 62 °C extraction temperature, along with the corresponding greatest contents of NAR (48.18 mg/g) and NEO (34.50 mg/g), respectively. Notably, by comparison with the pre-optimization data, the optimized DES extraction efficiency of flavonoids is markedly higher. Thereafter, the characterization of the solvents before and after extraction, as well as the differences between the four extraction solvent extracts, were compared using the FT-IR analyses. Furthermore, SEM results suggested that the penetration and erosion abilities of the plant cell wall of DES-1 were stronger than those of the other three traditional solvents, thus allowing more release of flavonoid compounds. In conclusion, the present research develops a straightforward, sustainable, and exceedingly efficient approach for the extraction of bioactive flavonoids from JFA, which has the potential to facilitate the efficient acquisition of active ingredients from TCM.

The process of myogenesis, which involves the growth and differentiation of muscle cells, is a crucial determinant of meat yield and quality in beef cattle. Essential nutrients, such as vitamins D and A, play vital roles in the development and maintenance of various tissues, including muscle. However, limited knowledge exists regarding the specific effects of vitamins A and D in bovine muscle. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the impact of vitamins A and D treatment on myogenic fusion and differentiation in bovine satellite cells (BSC). BSC were isolated from Korean native beef cattle, specifically from four female cows approximately 30 mo old. These individual cows were used as biological replicates (n = 3 or 4), and we examined the effects of varying concentrations of vitamins A (All-trans retinoic acid; 100 nM) and D (1,25-dihydroxy-vitamin D3; 1 nM, 10 nM, and 100 nM), both individually and in combination, on myoblast fusion and myogenic differentiation during the growth phase (48 h) or differentiation phase (6 d). The results were statistically analyzed using GLM procedure of SAS with Tukey's test and t-tests or one-way ANOVA where appropriate. The findings revealed that vitamin A enhanced the myoblast fusion index, while vitamin D treatment decreased the myoblast fusion index during the growth phase. Furthermore, vitamin A treatment during the differentiation phase promoted terminal differentiation by regulating the expression of myogenic regulatory factors (Myf5, MyoD, MyoG, and Myf6) and inducing myotube hypertrophy compared to the control satellite cells (P < 0.01). In contrast, vitamin D treatment during the differentiation phase enhanced myogenic differentiation by increasing the mRNA expression of MyoG and Myf6 (P < 0.01). Moreover, the combined treatment of vitamins A and D during the growth phase increased myoblast fusion and further promoted myogenic differentiation and hypertrophy of myotubes during the differentiation phase (P < 0.01). These results suggest that vitamin A and D supplementation may have differential effects on muscle development in Korean native beef cattle during the feeding process.


The study investigated the effects of vitamins A and D on the growth and differentiation phases of bovine satellite cells and found that both vitamins have a positive impact on muscle development. Vitamin A promoted myoblast fusion during the growth phase, leading to increased myotube formation, while vitamin D suppressed myoblast fusion during this phase. However, during the differentiation phase, both vitamins enhanced terminal differentiation and hypertrophy. Vitamin A promoted the activation of satellite cells, while vitamin D promoted the expression of genes that enhance myogenesis. The combination treatment of vitamins A and D during the growth phase complemented each other to increase myogenic cell fusion, and during differentiation, promoted terminal differentiation and hypertrophy. These findings suggest that supplementing cattle feed with both vitamins A and D has the potential to enhance muscle development, which would be advantageous for the meat industry.

The efficient and green extraction of bioactive ingredients from natural plants play a vital role in their corresponding drug effects and subsequent studies. Recently, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been considered promising new green solvents for efficiently and selectively extracting substances from varied plants. In this work, an environment-friendly DESs-based ultrasonic-assisted extraction (DESs-UAE) procedure was developed for highly efficient and non-polluting extraction of alkaloids from the roots of Stephania tetrandra (ST). A total of fifteen different combinations of DESs, compared with traditional organic solvents (methanol and 95% ethanol) and water, were evaluated for extraction of bioactive alkaloids (FAN and TET) from ST, and the results revealed that DESs system made up of choline chloride and ethylene glycol with mole ratio of 1:2 exhibited the optimal extraction efficiency for alkaloids. Additionally, a four-factor and three-level Box-Behnken design (BBD), a particular pattern of response surface methodology (RSM), was used to optimize extraction conditions. RSM results indicated that the maximum extraction yields of FAN, TET, and TA were attained 7.23, 13.36, 20.59 mg/g, respectively, within extraction temperature of 52 °C, extraction time of 82 min, DES water content of 23% (v/v), and liquid-solid ratio of 23 mL/g. The measured results were consistent with the predicted values. Notably, the optimized DES extraction efficiency of TA, according to the experimental data analysis, is 2.2, 3.3 and 4.1 times higher than methanol, 95% ethanol and water, respectively. Meanwhile, based on 3D response surface plots, interactive effects plots and contour maps, the effects of the aforementioned four essential factors on the extraction yield and their interactions on the response were visualized. The results revealed that the mutual interactions between extraction temperature and liquid-solid ratio exhibited positive effects on all responses, while extraction time and water content in DES posed a negative effect. Therefore, these results suggest that DESs, as a class of novel green solvents, with the potential to substitute organic solvent and water, can be widely and effectively applied to extract bioactive compounds from natural plants.

In this research, two sequential Dendrobium officinale water extracts (WDOE and WDOP1) were shown to significantly ameliorate type 2 diabetic mellitus (T2DM) in a mouse model. WDOP1 was identified as a glucomannan with a backbone of 1,4-linked Manp and 1,4-linked Glcp and an average molecular weight of 731 kDa. We also found that both WDOE and WDOP1 could significantly alleviate glucose intolerance, insulin resistance, oxidative stress injury, serum lipid metabolism disturbances, and histopathological damage in T2DM mice. In addition, we demonstrated that WDOE and WDOP1 reversed gut dysbiosis by reshaping the microbiota spectrum in T2DM mice. It should be emphasized that both Dendrobium officinale extracts afforded beneficial effects in T2DM mice comparable to metformin, despite differences in examined dosages. In conclusion, we demonstrated that Dendrobium officinale derivatives have potential as T2DM management nutraceuticals.

Our previous studies demonstrated that oral vitamin A supplementation during late-stage pregnancy and the neonatal stage enhances birth weight, growth performance, and mRNA expression related to muscle and preadipocyte development in beef cattle. The alcohol dehydrogenase 1C (ADH1C) c.-64T > C genotype also correlated with vitamin A concentration in beef production. This study aimed to investigate the effects of vitamin A supplementation on the muscle development and vitamin A metabolism in weaned beef calves with different ADH1C genotypes. Twenty male calves (90 d of age; initial BW: 89.03 kg [SD 8.60]) were stratified according to ADH1C genotype and vitamin A treatment (duration: 3 months) and randomly assigned to 4 groups with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. Vitamin A treatments included the following: control (10,000 IU/kg of as-fed, a. TT type; b. TC type); treatment (40,000 IU/kg of as-fed, c. TT type; and d. TC type). Parameters including BW, FI, blood, longissimus dorsi muscle, and liver status during the experimental period were analyzed using the generalized linear model (GLM) procedure and Tukey's test by SAS 9.4 program. Serum vitamin A was significantly increased (P < 0.05) in the vitamin A treatment group at 4 and 6 months of age. TT type calves showed higher serum vitamin A concentration (P < 0.05) than the TC type calves. Serum triglyceride and non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) levels increased (P < 0.05) in the treatment group compared with the control at 6 months of age. However, BW, ADG and FI showed no differences between the groups. In addition, mRNA expression in longissimus dorsi muscle revealed upregulation of paired box 7 (PAX7) (P < 0.05) after the vitamin A treatment period based on biopsy results. Both ADH1C and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) 1A1 mRNA expression was downregulated (P < 0.01) by vitamin A supplementation. The TC type of ADH1C showed higher mRNA expression than the TT type. However, no effect was observed on adipogenic mRNA expression (preadipocyte factor-1 [PREF-1], peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma [PPARγ], fatty acid binding protein 4 [FABP4]) in all groups. Our findings suggest that weaned calves treated with vitamin A may promote the storage of satellite cells by elevating PAX7 gene expression in the muscle. The TC type calves may show increased capacity for vitamin A metabolism, which can be used in genetically customizing feed management to maximize beef production in the calves.

BACKGROUND: Pueraria lobata (Willd.) Ohwi (PL) has been used in China to detoxify alcohol and protect the liver for millennia, though its mechanism of liver protection has not been elucidated. However, fermentation is considered to be one of the effective ways to enhance the efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine. The aim of this study was to investigate the hepatoprotective mechanism of probiotic-fermented PL (FPL). Sprague Dawley rats were administered with FPL followed by gavage of alcohol for seven consecutive days; following that, liver injury levels were evaluated in rats. RESULTS: FPL ameliorated lipid accumulation and inflammation levels in rats. Meanwhile, the levels of ethanol dehydrogenase, acetaldehyde dehydrogenase, and cytochrome P4502E1 were elevated by FPL treatment. It was observed that the levels of catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase were elevated, and the expression of nuclear transcriptional factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (Nrf2) and heme oxygenase-1 genes and proteins were increased by FPL treatment, demonstrating that the Nrf2-mediated signal pathway was activated. Furthermore, FPL restored the composition of the gut microbiota with an increase in the abundances of Firmicutes and Lactobacillus and a decrease in the abundances of Bacteroidota and Akkermansia. Additionally, a strong correlation was found between the gut microbiota and the antioxidant parameters. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that FPL possesses an excellent protective effect in alcoholic liver injury. Our findings are beneficial to the development of hepatoprotective nutraceuticals for alcoholics. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Hyperlipidemia is associated with lipid metabolic disorders, chronic inflammation, and intestinal dysbiosis. Previous studies have shown that the metabolic improvement of high-fat diet (HFD)-induced mice by buckwheat is correlated with gut microbiota; however, the anti-hyperlipidemia effects and potential mechanism of probiotics-fermented rice buckwheat (FRB) are not well understood. Here, we aimed to investigate the lipid-lowering and gut microbiota regulation of FRB in HFD-induced hyperlipidemic mice. We observed that probiotic fermentation markedly increased the contents of γ-aminobutyric acid, rutin, total polyphenols, and total flavonoids in rice buckwheat. FRB supplementation over eight weeks significantly reduced body weight gain and visceral obesity, as well as alleviating dyslipidemia in HFD-fed mice. Moreover, FRB treatment effectively ameliorated oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. We further demonstrated that FRB intervention significantly inhibited hepatic cholesterol synthesis and lipogenesis, and promoted lipolysis. More important, FRB treatment reversed HFD-induced gut dysbiosis by decreasing the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes and increasing the abundance of SCFA-producing bacteria such as Bacteroides, Lactobacillus, and Blautia, along with increasing the total SCFAs contents. Overall, these results show that FRB is a beneficial nutraceutical for hyperlipidemia amelioration.

Morinda officinalis has diverse pharmacological effects and has the potential to be used as functional food and medicine. Fermentation is traditionally used to process Morinda officinalis. However, the toxicological profile of fermented Morinda officinalis (FMO) is not reported. In the present study, the toxicological characteristics of FMO were assessed for the first time. FMO did not show any genotoxicity based on the Ames test, mammalian erythrocyte micronucleus test, and mouse primary spermatocyte chromosome aberration test. FMO administered by gavage in mice and rats at a dose of 20 g/kg BW did not induce death or toxicity based on acute study, indicating that FMO could be regarded as non-toxic at the tested dose. In the 90-day subchronic toxicity study, rats fed with FMO at the maximum dose of 8 g/kg BW did not affect mortalities, BW, food consumption, organ weights, hematology, serum biochemistry, or urinalysis. The no observed adverse effect level of FMO in both sexes was not less than 8 g/kg BW/day based on subchronic toxicity. The obtained results support the safe use of FMO as functional food and medicine.

Stroke is one of the main causes of disease­related mortality worldwide. Buyang Huanwu Decoction (BHD) has been used to protect against stroke and stroke­induced disability for several years in China. Studies have shown that BHD can relieve neuronal damage in rats with cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. However, the mechanism remains unclear. A middle cerebral artery occlusion and reperfusion (MCAO­R) model was used in the present study. The animals were treated with BHD (5, 10 and 20 g/kg) or rapamycin. Infarct size and modified neurological severity score were calculated on day 5 following MCAO­R surgery. Cellular changes around the ischemic penumbra were revealed by hematoxylin and eosin and Nissl staining. The protein expression levels of nestin, brain­derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), doublecortin on the X chromosome (DCX) and autophagy­related proteins (beclin 1, LC3­II and p62) in the peri­ischemic area of the brain were detected. The results demonstrated that post­surgical treatment with BHD reduced the brain infarct size and improved neurological deficits in MCAO­R rats. BHD protected against MCAO­R­induced neuronal impairment and promoted neurogenesis, increased the protein expression of nestin, BDNF and DCX and markedly enhanced autophagy by increasing beclin 1 and LC3­II and decreasing p62. Meanwhile, BHD promoted the expression of sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), an important regulator of autophagy. In conclusion, the present study suggested that post­surgical treatment with BHD could protect rat brains from I/R injury, potentially through the SIRT1/autophagy pathway.

During growth in cattle, the development of intramuscular adipose tissue and muscle is dependent upon cell hyperplasia (increased number of adipocytes) and hypertrophy (increased size of adipocytes). Based on the results of previous studies, other adipose tissue depots (e.g., perirenal and subcutaneous) develop from the fetal stage primarily as brown adipose tissue. The hyperplastic stage of intramuscular adipose is considered to develop from late pregnancy, but there is no evidence indicating that intramuscular adipose tissue develops initially as brown adipose tissue. Hyperplastic growth of intramuscular adipose continues well into postweaning and is dependent on the timing of the transition to grain-based diets; thereafter, the late-stage development of intramuscular adipose tissue is dominated by hypertrophy. For muscle development, hyperplasia of myoblasts lasts from early (following development of somites in the embryo) to middle pregnancy, after which growth of muscle is the result of hypertrophy of myofibers. Vitamin A is a fat-soluble compound that is required for the normal immunologic function, vision, cellular proliferation, and differentiation. Here we review the roles of vitamin A in intramuscular adipose tissue and muscle development in cattle. Vitamin A regulates both hyperplasia and hypertrophy in in vitro experiments. Vitamin A supplementation at the early stage and restriction at fattening stage generate opposite effects in the beef cattle. Appropriate vitamin A supplementation and restriction strategy increase intramuscular adipose tissue development (i.e., marbling or intramuscular fat) in some in vivo trials. Besides, hyperplasia and hypertrophy of myoblasts/myotubes were affected by vitamin A treatment in in vitro trials. Additionally, some studies reported an interaction between the alcohol dehydrogenase-1C (ADH1C) genotype and vitamin A feed restriction for the development of marbling and/or intramuscular adipose tissue, which was dependent on the timing and level of vitamin A restriction. Therefore, the feed strategy of vitamin A has the visible impact on the marbling and muscle development in the cattle, which will be helpful to promote the quality of the beef.

Designing and constructing bimetallic hierarchical structures is vital for the conversion-alloy reaction anode of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Particularly, the rationally designed hetero-interface engineering can offer fast diffusion kinetics in the interface, leading to the improved high-power surface pseudocapacitance and cycling stability for SIBs. Herein, the hierarchical zinc-tin sulfide nanocages (ZnS-NC/SnS2 ) are constructed through hydrothermal and sulfuration reactions. The unconventional hierarchical design with internal void space greatly optimizes the structure stability, and bimetallic sulfide brings a bimetallic composite interface and N heteroatom doping, which are devoted to high electrochemical activity and improved interfacial charge transfer rate for Na+ storage. Remarkably, the ZnS-NC/SnS2 composite anode exhibits a delightful reversible capacity of 595 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles at 0.2 A g-1 , and long cycling capability for 500 cycles with a low capacity loss of 0.08% per cycle at 1 A g-1 . This study opens up a new route for rationally constructing hierarchical heterogeneous interfaces and sheds new light on efficient anode material for SIBs.

Previous studies have reported that vitamin A administration in the birth stage of calves could promote preadipocyte and muscle development. However, the metabolic change after vitamin A administration remains unknown. Thus, the objective of this study was to perform metabonomics analyses to investigate the effect of vitamin A in Korean native calves. Ten newborn calves (initial average body weight: 30.4 kg [SD 2.20]) were randomly divided into two groups treated with or without vitamin A supplementation (0 IU vs. 25,000 IU vitamin A/day) for two months until weaning. Metabolic changes in the serum and longissimus dorsi muscle of calves were investigated using GC-TOF-MS and multivariate statistical analysis. As a result, ten metabolic parameters in the serum and seven metabolic parameters in the longissimus dorsi muscle were down-regulated in the vitamin A treatment group compared to those in the control group (VIP value > 1.0, p < 0.05). Both serum and longissimus dorsi muscle showed lower levels of cholesterol and myo-inositol in the vitamin A treatment group than in the control group (p < 0.05). These results indicate that vitamin A supplementation in the early growth period of calf could maintain the preadipocyte status, which can contribute to future adipogenesis in the intramuscular fat production of Korean native cattle.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effects of vitamin A (VA) supplementation during late-stage pregnancy on longissimus dorsi muscle tissue development, birth traits, and growth performance of postnatal Korean native calves. METHODS: In the preliminary experiment, twenty-six pregnant cattle (initial body weight [BW] = 319 kg (standard deviation [SD] = 30.1; 1st parity) were randomly assigned to the control and treatment groups. The treatment group received VA supplementation at 24,000 IU/d from gestational day 225 until delivery. In the main experiment, twelve pregnant cattle (initial BW = 317 kg [SD = 31.3]; 1st parity) were treated with VA supplementation at 24,000 IU/d (gestational days 150 to 225) and at 78,000 IU/d (gestational day 225 until delivery). Serum VA levels were analyzed in pregnant cattle, and the growth performance, gene expression, and serum VA levels were analyzed in the offspring. RESULTS: Serum VA levels in pregnant cattle decreased the late gestation in both experiments (p<0.001). In the main experiment, pregnant cattle at parturition and offspring at birth in the treatment group had higher serum VA levels than those in the control group (p<0.05). In the treatment groups, an increased birth weight was observed in the main experimental group (p = 0.022), and a tendency (p = 0.088) toward an increased birth weight was observed in the preliminary experimental group. However, no differences were observed in the feed intake, average daily gain, gain-to-feed ratio, or BW of 31-day-old calves. Gene expression was analyzed in longissimus dorsi muscles of 31-day-old calves. VA supplementation in pregnant cattle stimulated postnatal muscle development in offspring by elevating myogenic factor 5 (MYF5), MYF6, and myoblast determination levels (p<0.05). Moreover, preadipocyte-related marker genes such as extracellular signal-regulated kinase 2 and krüppel-like factor 2 were higher in the treatment group than in the control group (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: VA supplementation (78,000 IU/d) in late-stage pregnant cattle maintained serum VA levels. In addition, 78,000 IU/d VA supplementation increased the birth weight and expression of genes related to muscle and preadipocyte development in offspring. Overall, 78,000 IU/d VA supplementation in pregnant cattle is beneficial to newborn calves.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical effect of six-step manipulation combined with extracorporeal shock wave in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. METHODS: Seventy-six patients with KOA from December 2016 to June 2018 were divided into control group and treatment group, 38 in each group. The patients in the control group were treated with oral medicine combined with extracorporeal shock wave therapy, while the patients in the treatment group were treated with six-step manipulation combined with shock wave therapy. The VAS score, WOMAC score and clinical efficacy of the two groups were compared before treatment, 1 day, 1 month and 6 months after treatment. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in VAS score and WOMAC score between the two groups before treatment(P>0.05). VAS score and WOMAC score in treatment group were significantly lower than those in control group at 1 day, 1 month and 6 months after treatment, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Six-step manipulation combined with extracorporeal shock wave therapy can significantly alleviate pain and improve knee function in patients with knee osteoarthritis, and the clinical effect is obvious.

Tumor cell complete extinction is a crucial measure to evaluate antitumor efficacy. The difficulties in defining tumor margins and finding satellite metastases are the reason for tumor recurrence. A synergistic method based on multimodality molecular imaging needs to be developed so as to achieve the complete extinction of the tumor cells. In this study, graphene oxide conjugated with gold nanostars and chelated with Gd through 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-N,N',N,N'-tetraacetic acid (DOTA) (GO-AuNS-DOTA-Gd) were prepared to target HCC-LM3-fLuc cells and used for therapy. For subcutaneous tumor, multimodality molecular imaging including photoacoustic imaging (PAI) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and the related processing techniques were used to monitor the pharmacokinetics process of GO-AuNS-DOTA-Gd in order to determine the optimal time for treatment. For orthotopic tumor, MRI was used to delineate the tumor location and margin in vivo before treatment. Then handheld photoacoustic imaging system was used to determine the tumor location during the surgery and guided the photothermal therapy. The experiment result based on orthotopic tumor demonstrated that this synergistic method could effectively reduce tumor residual and satellite metastases by 85.71% compared with the routine photothermal method without handheld PAI guidance. These results indicate that this multimodality molecular imaging-guided photothermal therapy method is promising with a good prospect in clinical application.

OBJECTIVES@#Stably expressed transforming growth factor -beta 1(TGF-β1)MCs were obtained and the effects of centellaasiatica (CA) granule on the expressions of Smad 2/3, Smad 7 and collagen Ⅳ and the level of Smad 2/3 phosphorylation were observed.@*METHODS@#Lipofectin method was used to transfect TGF-β1 vector into MC, and the stably expressed TGF-β1 cell lines were selected by G418. The cells were divided into three groups. Control group:normal MC + RPMI 1640 + 10% normal rat serum; TGF-β1 group:stably expressed TGF-β1 MC + RPMI 1640 + 10% normal rat serum; CA group:stably expressed TGF-β1 MC + RPMI 1640 + 10% rat serum containing high CA. The experiments were repeated for five times. The contents of TGF-β1 and collagen Ⅳ in the culture medium were detected with ELISA, the expressions of mRNA and protein of TGF-β1, Smad 2/3, Smad 7 and the level of Smad 2/3 phosphorylation were detected by using real time quantitative polymerase chain reaction and Western blot.@*RESULTS@#The contents of TGF-β1 and collagen Ⅳ in the culture medium of stably-expressed TGF-β1 MC were increased significantly, and the CA could reverse the effects of TGF-β1. The expressions of mRNA and protein of TGF-β1, Smad 2/3 and the level of Smad 2/3 phosphorylation were increased significantly in TGF-β1 transfected MC, and CA could dramatically reduce the expressions of mRNA and protein of TGF-β1, Smad 2/3 and the level of Smad 2/3 phosphorylation. The high expression of TGF-β1 decreased the expression of Smad 7 mRNA and protein, and the CA could antagonize the effect of mRNA expression.@*CONCLUSIONS@#The MCs stably-expressed TGF-β1 can activate the TGF-β1/Smad signal pathway and increase the expression of collagen Ⅳ. CA can decrease the occurrence of diabetic nephropathy(DN) by reducing the production of collagen Ⅳ through inhibiting the TGF-β1/Smad signal pathway.

A highly efficient visible-light-driven photocatalyst is urgently necessary for photocatalytic hydrogen generation through water splitting. Herein, ZnIn2 S4 hierarchical architectures assembled as ultrathin nanosheets were synthesized by a facile one-pot polyol approach. Subsequently, the two-dimensional-network-like MoSe2 was successfully hybridized with ZnIn2 S4 by taking advantage of their analogous intrinsic layered morphologies. The noble-metal-free ZnIn2 S4 /MoSe2 heterostructures show enhanced photocatalytic H2 evolution compared to pure ZnIn2 S4 . It is noteworthy that the optimum nanocomposite of ZnIn2 S4 /2 % MoSe2 photocatalyst displays a high H2 generation rate of 2228 µmol g-1 h-1 and an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 21.39 % at 420 nm. This study presents an unprecedented ZnIn2 S4 /MoSe2 metal-sulfide-metal-selenide hybrid system for H2 evolution. Importantly, the present efficient hybridization strategy reveals the potential of hierarchical nanoarchitectures for a multitude of energy storage and solar energy conversion applications.

The assembly of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to AuNP assemblies is of interest for cancer therapy and imaging. Herein we introduce a new and general paradigm, thermally triggered AuNP assembly, for the development of novel intelligent platforms for cancer photothermal therapy (PTT) and multimodal imaging. Site-specific conjugation of a thermally sensitive elastin-like polypeptide (ELP) to AuNPs yields thermally sensitive ELP-AuNPs. Interestingly, ELP-AuNPs can in situ form AuNP assemblies composed of short necklace-like gold nanostructures at elevated temperatures and thus show strong near-infrared light absorption and high photothermal effect. These thermally responsive properties of ELP-AuNPs enable simultaneous photothermal/photoacoustic/X-ray computed tomographic imaging and PTT of melanoma after single intratumoral injection of ELP-AuNPs. The thermally triggered assembly of a variety of nanoparticles with optical, electronic, and magnetic properties into nanoparticle assemblies may open new ways for the establishment of intelligent platforms for various applications in biomedicine.

OBJECTIVE: This work was to find the correlation of alcohol dehydrogenase 1C (ADH1C) genotype with vitamin A reduction and carcass traits during the vitamin A restriction period. METHODS: In study 1, 60 Korean native steers were fed a diet (890 IU/kg) with 8,000 IU and 0 IU of supplemental premix vitamin A/kg of dry matter (DM) for control and treatment group, respectively. The levels of serum vitamin A were analyzed through high preparative performance liquid chromatography, and the ADH1C genotype was analyzed based on polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP; 78.1% TT type, 21.9% TC type); however, CC type was not found. Then, the interaction between ADH1C and carcass traits on the vitamin A restriction was investigated in study 2. A total of 136 Korean native steers were fed a diet that included 930 IU/kg vitamin A of DM. RESULTS: Serum vitamin A in treatment was reduced to 112.4 IU/dL in steers with TT type of ADH1C, while for steers with TC type the concentration of serum vitamin A was dropped to 79.5 IU/dL (p<0.1) in study 1. This showed that TC type had the potential to lower serum vitamin A concentration during vitamin A restriction compared to TT type. In study 2 we found that eye muscle area, marbling and carcass weight in Korean native steers with TC type were higher than in steers with TT type (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: The interaction between vitamin A restriction and TC type of ADH1C gene could have the potential of increasing the marbling in Korean native steers. These results indicated that steers with TC type of the ADH1C gene were more sensitive to the change of serum vitamin A than TT types. Furthermore, this finding has the potential to enable a higher marbling score under the condition of vitamin A restriction in Korean native steers.

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>Anesthetic isoflurane plus surgery has been reported to induce cognitive impairment. The underlying mechanism and targeted intervention remain largely to be determined. Ginsenoside Rb1 was reported to be neuroprotective. We therefore set out to determine whether ginsenoside Rb1 can attenuate isoflurane/surgery-induced cognitive dysfunction via inhibiting neuroinflammation and oxidative stress.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Five-months-old C57BL/6J female mice were treated with 1.4% isoflurane plus abdominal surgery for two hours. Sixty mg/kg ginsenoside Rb1 were given intraperitoneally from 7 days before surgery. Cognition of the mice were assessed by Barnes Maze. Levels of postsynaptic density-95 and synaptophysin in mice hippocampus were measured by Western blot. Levels of reactive oxygen species, tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6 in mice hippocampus were measured by ELISA.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Here we show for the first time that the ginsenoside Rb1 treatment attenuated the isoflurane/surgery-induced cognitive impairment. Moreover, ginsenoside Rb1 attenuated the isoflurane/surgery-induced synapse dysfunction. Finally, ginsenoside Rb1 mitigated the isoflurane/surgery-induced elevation levels of reactive oxygen species, tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6 in the mice hippocampus.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>These results suggest that ginsenoside Rb1 may attenuate the isoflurane/surgery-induced cognitive impairment by inhibiting neuroinflammation and oxidative stress pending future studies.</p>
