RESUMEN

Long-term high-fat diet (HFD) will induce dysbiosis and a disturbance of intestinal homeostasis. Large yellow tea polysaccharide (LYP) has been shown to improve obesity-associated metabolic disease via modulation of the M2 polarization. However, the contribution of LYP to intestinal barrier impairment and improvement mechanisms in obesity caused by an HFD are still not clear. In this study, we evaluated the impacts of LYP on the mucosal barrier function and microbiota composition in HFD-feeding mice. Results exhibited that dietary LYP supplement could ameliorate the physical barrier function via maintaining intestinal mucosal integrity and elevating tight-junction protein production, strengthen the chemical barrier function via up-regulating the levels of glucagon-like peptide-1 and increasing mucin-producing goblet cell numbers, and enhance the intestinal immune barrier function though suppressing immune cell subsets and cytokines toward pro-inflammatory phenotypes. Moreover, LYP reshaped the constitution and metabolism of intestinal flora by enriching probiotics that produce short-chain fatty acids. Overall, LYP might be used as a critical regulator of intestinal homeostasis to improve host health by promoting gut barrier integrity, modulating intestinal immune response, and inhibiting bowel inflammation.

The detailed dynamics of small molecular nonvolatile chemical and bacterial diversities, as well as their relationship are still unclear in the manufacturing process of Keemun black tea (KMBT). Herein, mass spectrometry-based untargeted metabolomics, Feature-based Molecular Networking (FBMN) and bacterial DNA amplicon sequencing were used to investigate the dense temporal samples of the manufacturing process. For the first time, we reveal that the pyrogallol-type catechins are oxidized asynchronously before catechol-type catechins during the black tea processing. Rolling is the key procedure for forming the small molecular nonvolatile metabolite profile (SMNMetProf), increasing the metabolite richness, and then shaping the bacterial community structure in the KMBT manufacturing process, which decreases both molecular weight and molecular polarity of the small molecular nonvolatile metabolites. The SMNMetProf of black tea is formed by the endogenous enzymatic oxidation of tea leaves, rather than bacterial fermentation.

Green tea is one of the main types of tea in China, and it has been widely consumed in the world. This study aims to investigate the potential mechanism by which the water extract of green tea (GTWE) may be effective in the treatment of alcohol-related hepatitis (ARH), utilizing a combination of network pharmacology, molecular docking, and experimental validation. Through network pharmacology analysis, seven active components and 45 potential targets were identified, with TLR4 being confirmed as the central target. Experimental findings demonstrate that GTWE exhibits significant efficacy in mitigating alcohol-induced liver inflammation and steatosis. Furthermore, the administration of GTWE has demonstrated significant efficacy in mitigating alcohol-induced intestinal inflammation and microbiota disturbance while concurrently restoring intestinal barrier function. Consequently, GTWE exhibits considerable potential as a pharmacological intervention and warrants further research and development as a lead compound for the treatment of ARH. Moreover, the prospective utilization of green tea in prolonged intakes exhibits potential as a prophylactic nutritive regimen against ARH.

Obesity-induced metabolic syndrome is strongly associated with infiltrated adipose tissue macrophages (ATMs). Large yellow tea, a traditional functional beverage in China, has been shown to possess anti-obesity effects. However, the effect of large yellow tea polysaccharides (LYPs) against obesity-associated metabolic syndrome and their underlying mechanisms remain unclear and must be extensively investigated. In this study, we investigated the ameliorative effect of LYPs on metabolic syndrome using a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mouse model. Our results indicated that LYPs significantly alleviated weight gain, dyslipidemia, glucose intolerance, and insulin resistance. Moreover, LYPs restored the homeostasis of energy metabolism and pancreatic ß-cell function. Notably, LYPs promoted M2 polarization of ATMs by regulating the expression of genes and specific cytokines involved in the assembly and secretion of M2 polarization. The improved metabolic syndrome of LYPs might be associated with the modulation of macrophage polarization. These findings suggest that LYPs might be a novel potential therapeutic agent to prevent or treat HFD-induced metabolic disorders by regulating M2 polarization.

Theaflavins (TFs), the primary bioactive components in black tea, are poorly absorbed in the small intestine. However, the biological activity of TFs does not match their low bioavailability, which suggests that the gut microbiota plays a crucial role in their biotransformation and activities. In this study, we aimed to investigate the biotransferred metabolites of TFs produced by the human gut microbiota and these metabolites' function. We profiled the microbial metabolites of TFs by in vitro anaerobic human gut microbiota fermentation using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) methods. A total of 17 microbial metabolites were identified, and their corresponding metabolic pathways were proposed. Moreover, full-length 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that the TFs altered the gut microbiota diversity and increased the relative abundance of specific members of the microbiota involved in the catabolism of the TFs, including Flavonifractor_plautii, Bacteroides_uniformis, Eubacterium_ramulus, etc. Notably, the antioxidant capacity of the TF sample increased after fermentation compared to the initial sample. In conclusion, the results contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the microbial metabolites and antioxidant capacity of TFs.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia and is characterized by amyloid-ß (Aß) peptides and hyperphosphorylated Tau proteins. Evidence indicates that AD and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) share pathophysiological characteristics, including impaired insulin sensitivity. Large-leaf yellow tea (LYT) has been widely recognized for its health benefits, and we previously found that LYT can improve peripheral insulin resistance. PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the protective effects and underlying mechanisms of LYT in the 5xFAD mouse model of AD. METHODS: HPLC and spectrophotometric methods determined the chemical composition of the LYT extract. 5xFAD mice were treated with LYT supplementation (2 and 4 mg/ml) in drinking water for six months. Barnes and Y mazes were used to evaluate cognitive function, and the open field test assessed anxiety-like behavior. Immunofluorescence, silver, and Nissl staining were used to evaluate the pathological effects of LYT extract. A FRET-based assay assessed ß-site APP cleavage enzyme 1 (BACE1) activity, ELISA measured Aß levels in the brain, and Western blot analyses explored protein expression levels. RESULTS: Our results revealed that LYT significantly attenuated memory impairment and anxiety levels and alleviated cerebral neural damage. A reduction of senile plaques was also observed in both the cortex and hippocampus. LYT significantly inhibited the activity of BACE1, which resulted in a lower Aß protein level. In addition, LYT enhanced insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS-1)-mediated phosphorylation of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) and protein kinase B (AKT), further suppressed glycogen synthase kinase-3ß (GSK3ß), and ultimately inhibited hyperphosphorylation of the protein Tau. The inhibitory effect of the LYT extract on the phosphorylation of Tau and BACE1 activity was dose-dependent. CONCLUSION: LYT improves cognitive ability and reduces Aß production by inhibiting BACE1 activity. Decreases of Tau protein hyperphosphorylation upon LYT treatment appear to be associated with the regulation of the IRS-1/PI3K/AKT/GSK3ß axis. Thus, the findings of this study also provide new evidence that LYT regulates insulin signaling pathways within the central nervous system.

Tea polyphenol epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) has been widely recognized for antiobesity effects. However, the molecular mechanism of lipidomic pathway related to lipid-lowering effect of EGCG is still not well understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects and mechanism of EGCG activated hepatic lipidomic pathways on ameliorating obesity-related complications by using newly developed leptin receptor knockout (Lepr KO) rats. Results showed that EGCG supplementation (100 mg/kg body weight) significantly decreased total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and triglyceride (TG) levels both in the serum and liver, and significantly improved glucose intolerance. In addition, EGCG alleviated fatty liver development and restored the normal liver function in Lepr KO rats. Liver lipidomic analysis revealed that EGCG dramatically changes overall composition of lipid classes. Notably, EGCG significantly decreased an array of triglycerides (TGs) and diglycerides (DGs) levels. While EGCG increased 31 glycerophospholipid species and one sphingolipid species levels, such as phosphatidylcholines (PCs), phosphatidylethanolamines (PEs), phosphatidylserines (PSs) and phosphatidylinositols (PIs) levels in the liver of Lepr KO rats. Moreover, 14 diversely regulated lipid species were identified as potential lipid biomarkers. Mechanistic analysis revealed that EGCG significantly activated the SIRT6/AMPK/SREBP1/FAS pathway to decrease DGs and TGs levels and upregulated glycerophospholipids synthesis pathways to increase glycerophospholipid level in the liver of Lepr KO rats. These findings suggested that the regulation of glycerolipids and glycerophospholipid homeostasis might be the key pathways for EGCG in ameliorating obesity-related complications in Lepr KO rats.

A novel homogeneous polysaccharide (LYP-S3) that promotes the M2 polarization of macrophages was obtained from large yellow tea by a bioactivity-guided sequential isolation procedure and activity evaluation in the present study. Structural characterization revealed that LYP-S3 has an average molecular weight of 28.6 kDa and is composed of rhamnose, arabinose, galactose, glucose, and galacturonic acid at the molar ratio of 8.08:11.66:11.77:3.96:58.02. The main backbone of LYP-S3 consists of →4)-α-d-GalpA-6-OMe-(1→, ß-d-GalpA-(1→, →4)-ß-d-Galp-(→1, and →ß-d-Galp-(1→, and the branches are composed of α-l-Araf-(→1, →5)-α-l-Araf-(1→, →2,4)-ß-l-Rhap-(1→, →2)-ß-l-Rhap-(1→, and →4)-ß-d-Glcp-(1→. An in vitro bioactivity evaluation assay showed that LYP-S3 remarkably reduced the expression of M1 macrophage markers and increased the expression of M2 macrophage markers. In addition, LYP-S3 inhibited adipocyte differentiation and adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 adipocytes and blocked macrophage migration toward 3T3-L1 adipocytes in the cocultures of bone-marrow-derived monocytes and 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Furthermore, LYP-S3 promoted the M2 polarization of macrophages in cocultures. These findings suggested that LYP-S3 has a potential function in preventing inflammation and obesity.

Predictable tea grading bears not only scientific merit, but also commercial value. Lu'an guapian green tea (LGGT) is one of the most famous green teas in China. Based on morphology and sensory flavour, LGGT was traditionally graded as first premium (FP), second premium (SP), first grade (FG), second grade (SG), third grade (TG) and summer grade (SuG). The chemical profiles and distinct metabolites distinguishing different grades of LGGT are yet to be defined, neither the grade related health benefits be evaluated. In present study, non-targeted metabolomics combined with chemometrics analysis showed that FP and SP, FG and SG exhibited high similarity, respectively. TG and SuG both exhibited great difference from the other grades. Therefore, LGGT could be regrouped into four grades. Furthermore, eight metabolites were identified and displayed grade related bio-markers of LGGT, which are gallic acid, catechin, gallocatechin, salicylic acid, theasinensin B, theasinensin C, kaempferol 3-(6''-rhanmnosylsoporoside) and l-linalool 3-[xylosyl-(1->6)-glucoside]. Quantitative analysis further confirmed that gallic acid, catechin, gallocatechin and salicylic acid were distinct grade-related metabolites. In vitro and in vivo data showed that methanol-extracts of higher grades LGGT exhibited more potent α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity and hypoglyceamia effect than that of lower grades.

Understanding the microbial and chemical diversities, as well as what affects these diversities, is important for modern manufacturing of traditional fermented foods. In this work, Chinese dark teas (CDTs) that are traditional microbial fermented beverages with relatively high sample diversity were collected. Microbial DNA amplicon sequencing and mass spectrometry-based untargeted metabolomics show that the CDT microbial ß diversity, as well as the nonvolatile chemical α and ß diversities, is determined by the primary impact factors of geography and manufacturing procedures, in particular, latitude and pile fermentation after blending. A large number of metabolites sharing between CDTs and fungi were discovered by Feature-based Molecular Networking (FBMN) on the Global Natural Products Social Molecular Networking (GNPS) web platform. These molecules, such as prenylated cyclic dipeptides and B-vitamins, are functionally important for nutrition, biofunctions, and flavor. Molecular networking has revealed patterns in metabolite profiles on a chemical family level in addition to individual structures.

Herbaspirillum aquaticum ZXN111 which was isolated from the tea plant Zijuan can produce indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and contain abiotic-stress tolerance gene 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase (accd). In this study, ZXN111 PGP activity and the molecular mechanism were investigated. The result showed that ACCD activity of wild-type ZXN111 was 0.4505 mM α-KB/mg·Pro·h, but mutants Δacc and Δacc-tyrb did not showed ACCD activity. IAA production by ZXN111 within 48 hrs was 20.4 µg/mL, while mutants of Δtyrb and Δacc-tyrb were lower than 3.6 µg/mL, indicating that indole-3-pyruvic acid is the primary IAA synthesis pathway. Potting tests found that ZXN111 displayed significant PGP activity to the tea plant Zijuan, but Δtyrb and Δacc-tyrb did not show PGP activity, indicating that IAA is critical to PGP activity. In a salt-stress test, ZXN111 did not enhance the tea plant NaCl tolerance by gene accd. The results of this study indicated that strain ZXN111 has potential for biofertilizer development on tea plantation.

SCOPE: Large-leaf yellow tea (YT) exhibits interesting beneficial metabolic effects in previous studies. Here, the authors elucidated the actions of YT on thermogenesis, energy metabolism, and adipocyte metabolic conversion. METHODS AND RESULTS: Five-week-old male C57BL/6 mice are fed low-fat diet, high-fat diet (HFD), and HFD supplemented with 0.5% or 2.5% YT. After treatment for 10 or 14 weeks, YT enhances energy expenditure, O2 consumption and CO2 production. YT strongly boosts thermogenic program in brown adipose tissue (BAT) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), while only weakly in epididymal adipose tissue (EAT). These are accompanied by higher body temperature, increased mitochondrial copy numbers, and upregulation of thermogenic genes (Ucp1, Pgc1α, etc.) and proteins. The classic brown adipocyte markers (Eva1, Zic1) are induced only in BAT, while beige adipocyte markers (Tbx1, Tmem26) are boosted only in SAT. Furthermore, subcutaneous-originated preadipocytes are induced by YT in vitro to differentiate to brown-like adipocytes - a browning effect. CONCLUSION: Dietary YT induces adaptive thermogenesis through increasing mitochondrial biogenesis in EAT, inducing beigeing in SAT and enhancing browning in the BAT.

Senile hypertension affects the life quality of aged population. Dietary intervention plays a pivotal role in the prevention of hypertension. There are few reports concerning the effects and mechanisms of green tea supplementation preventing age related hypertension. The current study investigated the effect and mechanism of dietary supplement of Huangshan Maofeng green tea (HSMF) on prevention of hypertension induced by deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA) and salt in old C57BL/6 mice. Our results showed that HSMF dose-dependently prevented the increase of systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure induced by DOCA plus salt (DS) at 51-week-old mice. And HSMF significantly reduced the agonists' stimulated contraction of mesenteric arteries isolated from the old mice. The expression of vasoconstrictor genes and inflammatory cytokines in aorta were suppressed observably by HSMF supplementation compared with DS group. The protein expression of PKCα in the aorta was dose-dependently decreased by HSMF compared to DS group. The phosphorylation level of MYPT1, CPI-17and MLC20 was also restrained by HSMF in the aorta. Furthermore, HSMF protected kidney by maintaining integrity of glomeruli and tubules and remarkably decreased the NGAL level in plasma. HSMF also suppressed the kidney inflammation by decreasing inflammatory cytokines expression and the macrophage infiltration. Our results proved that dietary supplement of HSMF remarkably improved the vascular functions and protected kidney injury, and thus prevented hypertension induced by DS in older C57BL/6 mice. Our data indicated that the dietary supplement of HSMF may potentially be used as a food additive for preventing hypertension for aged people.

Obesity, a chronic metabolic disorder, can affect male reproductive function. As a functional beverage, tea has many biological activities and potential in the treatment of obesity. However, its effects on male reproductive damage induced by obesity are not yet clear. In this study, a murine model of obesity was established by feeding with high-fat diet (HF). A total of 24 male mice were divided into four groups: normal diet (control), HF, HF supplemented with 5% green tea powder (HF+G), and HF supplemented with 5% black tea powder (HF+B). The results showed that the HF + B significantly reduced the mouse body weight gain and testicular coefficient and lowered the serum insulin and leptin levels compared with the HF group. The sperm malformation rate of mice in the HF group had a significant increase when compared with the control group, the HF + B group had a significant decrease compared with the HF group, and no difference from the control group. The HF + G and HF + B significantly increased testosterone levels in serum compared with the HF group. The testosterone production-related gene cytochrome P450 family 11 subfamily a member (CYP11A1) and cytochrome p450 family 17 subfamily a member 1 (CYP17A1) expressions in testis were significantly increased in the HF + G group compared with HF group. In addition, the HF + G and HF + B abolished the effects of HF on superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde, and glutathione levels in testis and antioxidant-related gene expressions of XRCC1 and SOD1. Overall, our findings have provided evidence that black and green tea has a positive effect on reducing reproductive damage in a male murine model of obesity, and that black tea is more effective than green tea.

Dark teas are prepared by a microbial fermentation process. Flavan-3-ol B-ring fission analogues (FBRFAs) are some of the key bioactive constituents that characterize dark teas. The precursors and the synthetic mechanism involved in the formation of FBRFAs are not known. Using a unique solid-state fermentation system with ß-cyclodextrin inclusion complexation as well as targeted chromatographic isolation, spectroscopic identification, and Feature-based Molecular Networking on the Global Natural Products Social Molecular Networking web platform, we reveal that dihydromyricetin and the FBRFAs, including teadenol A and fuzhuanin A, are derived from epigallocatechin gallate upon exposure to fungal strains isolated from Fuzhuan brick tea. In particular, the strains from subphylum Pezizomycotina were key drivers for these B-/C-ring oxidation transformations. These are the same transformations seen during the fermentation process of dark teas. These discoveries set the stage to enrich dark teas and other food products for these health-promoting constituents.

BACKGROUND: Diet and exercise play important roles in ameliorating metabolic syndrome. Yunkang 10 (Camellia sinensis var. assamica) is a most cultivated tea variety for making tea in the Southwestern China. Currently, there is no report of healthy effects of Yunkang 10 green tea (YKGT) and treadmill exercise (Ex) on high fat diet induced metabolic syndrome (MetS). We aimed to investigate the beneficial effects and molecular mechanism of YKGT and Ex using high fat diet induced MetS of C57BL/6 mice. METHODS: Catechins and caffeine in water extract of YKGT were measured via high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). 10-week old mice were fed with high fat diet (HFD) for 10 weeks to induce obese mice. Then the obese mice were fed with continuous high fat diet (HFD), HFD with YKGT, HFD with Ex, and HFD with both YKGT and Ex for 8 weeks, respectively. The another group of 10-week old mice fed with low fat diet (LFD) were used as control. RESULTS: HPLC data revealed that YKGT has abundantly high concentration of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and caffeine compared to Longjing 43 (Camellia sinensis var. sinensis) green tea. YKGT and Ex significantly decreased the level of blood glucose, serum total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), insulin, and alanine aminotransferase activity (ALT) when compared to HFD group. The fatty liver and hepatic pro-inflammatory gene expression in the YKGT, Ex and YKGT+Ex groups was mitigated significantly compared with HFD group, respectively. The phosphorylation of inhibitor of nuclear factor kappa-B kinase α/ß (IKKα/ß) and inhibitor of nuclear factor kappa-B α (IkBα) protein in the nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-kB) signaling pathway was also decreased in YKGT or YKGT+Ex groups. The combination of YKGT and Ex prevented gene expression for lipid synthesis in the liver tissue, and significantly upregulated mRNA level of glucose transport genes in the skeletal muscles, when compared to the HFD group. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that YKGT supplement or exercise appeared to reverse preexisting metabolic syndrome, and effectively relieved the fatty liver and hepatic inflammatory response induced by high fat diet. YKGT supplement and treadmill exercise together had better beneficial effects than only one intervention.

Aroma assessment remains difficult and uncertain in the present sensory assessment system. It is highly desirable to develop a new assessment method to discriminate the quality of various teas in the tea market. In the present work, based on linear discriminant analysis and principal component analysis, the aroma of dry and wet samples of different Xi-hu Longjing and Pu-erh teas were tested and differentiated by electronic noses (e-nose). The results confirm that e-nose can discriminate different priced Xi-hu Longjing tea samples in the range of 80-800 RMB/500 g and varying storage years of Pu-erh tea samples. Furthermore, for the detection of both dry and wet samples of Longjing and Pu-erh teas, the results reveal that all samples have specific aroma characteristics that e-nose can recognize. More importantly, contribution analysis in sensors indicates that nitrogen oxides, methane and alcohols are the characteristic components that contribute to the fragrances of different priced Xi-hu Longjing teas, while nitrogen oxides, aromatic benzene and amines make the fragrances of Pu-erh teas with different storage years disparate. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: This work demonstrates that e-nose can rapidly distinguish tea products with different price levels and varying storage years. With the advantages of ease of use, high portability and flexibility, e-nose will be widely expanded and applied in refined processing and the development of flavored foods.

Raw Pu-erh tea (RPT) needs ageing before drinking. However, the influence from environment and time of storage on chemical profile and flavor of RPT is unclear. In this study, the RPTs stored in wet-hot or dry-cold environment for 1-9 years were assessed using metabolomics based on UHPLC-Orbitrap-MS and global natural product social (GNPS) feature-based molecular networking as well as electronic tongue measurement. The results exhibited that the chemical profiles of RPTs were similar at an early stage but started to differentiate from each other at the 5th and the 7th year in wet-hot and dry-cold environments. The discriminating features including N-ethyl-2-pyrrolidinone-substituted flavan-3-ols (flavoalkaloids), unsaturated fatty acids, lysophosphatidylcholines, flavan-3-ols, amino acids, and flavonol-O-glycosides among the three chemical profiles were discovered and analyzed by means of multivariate statistics, GNPS multilibraries matching, and SIRIUS calculation. The metabolomic data were consistent with the results obtained through electronic tongue measurement.

Cardiovascular diseases have overtaken cancers as the number one cause of death. Hypertension is the most dangerous factor linked to deaths caused by cardiovascular diseases. Many researchers have reported that tea has anti-hypertensive effects in animals and humans. The aim of this review is to update the information on the anti-hypertensive effects of tea in human interventions and animal studies, and to summarize the underlying mechanisms, based on ex-vivo tissue and cell culture data. During recent years, an increasing number of human population studies have confirmed the beneficial effects of tea on hypertension. However, the optimal dose has not yet been established owing to differences in the extent of hypertension, and complicated social and genetic backgrounds of populations. Therefore, further large-scale investigations with longer terms of observation and tighter controls are needed to define optimal doses in subjects with varying degrees of hypertensive risk factors, and to determine differences in beneficial effects amongst diverse populations. Moreover, data from laboratory studies have shown that tea and its secondary metabolites have important roles in relaxing smooth muscle contraction, enhancing endothelial nitric oxide synthase activity, reducing vascular inflammation, inhibiting rennin activity, and anti-vascular oxidative stress. However, the exact molecular mechanisms of these activities remain to be elucidated.

Sanglan Tea (SLT) is a Chinese medicine-based formulation that is consumed as a health drink for the effective management of obesity-associated complications. However, its chemical components and mechanism of action in the prevention of hepatic steatosis and obesity-related impairments have been uncertain. In this study, we aimed to unveil the chemical profile of SLT and to explore its preventive mechanism in high-fat-diet-induced non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and obesity-related consequences in C57BL/6 mice. Ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) coupled to a quadrupole-orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry (MS) analysis of SLT indicated that analogs of quercetin and kaempferol are major compounds of flavonoids in SLT. A dietary supplement of SLT efficiently managed the blood glucose elevation, retained the serum total cholesterol (TC), LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglyceride (TG) levels, as well as aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity, and reduced the fat storage in the liver induced by a high-fat diet. The underlying mechanism of this preventive effect is hypothesized to be related to the inhibition of over-expression of lipogenesis and adipogenesis-related genes. Overall, this study suggests that SLT, being rich in quercetin and kaempferol analogs, could be a potential food supplement for the prevention of high-fat-diet-induced NAFLD and obesity-related complications.
