RESUMEN

Quenching is an important step to terminate disinfection during preparation of disinfected water samples for the analysis of disinfection byproducts (DBPs). However, an incomplete quenching might result in continued reactions of residual chlorine, whereas an excessive quenching might decompose target DBPs. Therefore, an adequate quenching to achieve simultaneous disinfection termination and DBP preservation is of particular importance. In this study, the two-stage reaction kinetics of chlorine and three commonly used quenching agents (i.e., ascorbic acid, sodium thiosulfate, and sodium sulfite) were determined. Stopping quenching during the first stage prevented interactions of residual chlorine with natural organic matter. Complete quenching was achieved by minimizing the quenching time for ascorbic acid and sodium sulfite, while limiting the quenching time to less than 3 min for sodium thiosulfate. At the optimized quenching times, the molar ratios (MRs) of quenching agent to chlorine were 1.05, 1.10, and 0.75 for ascorbic acid, sodium sulfite, and sodium thiosulfate, respectively. The destructive effects of the three quenching agents on total organic halogen (TOX) followed the rank order of ascorbic acid (33.7-64.8 %) < sodium sulfite (41.6-72.8 %) < sodium thiosulfate (43.3-73.2 %), and the destructive effects on aliphatic DBPs also followed the rank order of ascorbic acid (29.5-44.5 %) < sodium sulfite (34.9-51.9 %) < sodium thiosulfate (46.9-53.2 %). For total organic chlorine (TOCl) and aliphatic DBPs, the quenching behavior itself had more significant destructive effect than the quenching agent type/dose and quenching time, but for total organic bromine (TOBr), the destructive effect caused by quenching agent type/dose and quenching time was more significant. High-dose, long-duration quenching enhanced the reduction of TOX, but had little effect on aliphatic DBPs. Additionally, the three quenching agents reduced the levels of halophenols (except for tribromophenol), while maintained or increased the levels of tribromophenol, halobenzoic/salicylic acids, and halobenzaldehydes/salicylaldehydes. To achieve adequate quenching for overall DBP analysis in chlorinated water samples, it is recommended to use ascorbic acid at a quenching agent-to-chlorine MR of 1.0 for a quenching time of < 0.5 h.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) provides therapeutic and health care effects through dietary intake. Owing to the susceptibility of plants to contaminations, a risk assessment system is urgently needed to ensure the safe use of TCMs. In this study, the contamination levels and risks associated with the dietary intake of short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) were investigated in six kinds of frequently-used TCM herbs. The concentrations varied from 144.4 to 1527.8 ng·g-1 dw for SCCPs and non-detect to 1214.1 ng·g-1 dw for MCCPs, with mean values of 551.5 and 259.8 ng·g-1 dw, respectively. A geographic distribution analysis indicated that the concentrations of CPs in TCMs were mainly associated with their levels of contamination in the ambient environment. Carbon atom-chlorine congener profiles of CPs were dominated by C10Cl7-8 and C14Cl7-8 congeners, accounting for 20.1% and 32.4% of the total SCCP and MCCP concentrations, respectively. Principal component analysis indicated that the TCM species might be the main factor influencing the accumulation of SCCPs congeners. Finally, a risk assessment reveals that the estimated daily intake and margin of exposure were far below levels that might pose a health risk, indicating an acceptable dietary intake of SCCPs and MCCPs in the studied TCMs. This is the first report of CPs in the TCM herbs and the obtained results are expected to aid in future evaluation of the quality of TCMs and ensuring diet and drug safety.

The anti-hypochlorite activity of açaí (Euterpe oleracea Mart.), goji (Lyciumbarbarum L.) and schisandra (Schisandrachinensis) fruit extracts were assessed by determining the reactive chlorine species (RCS)-scavenging ability of these three "super-food" berries. In addition, the aqueous extracts obtained were employed as both the media and the catalyst in a green chemistry approach to the synthesis of a coumarin-based fluorescence turn-off sensor, which was then used for anti-hypochlorite activity testing. The aqueous extracts were also assessed for total phenolic content (TPC), using the Folin-Ciocalteu method, and the antioxidant activity using the ABTS+• assay. Moreover, the main water-soluble polyphenolic constituents of the extracts were identified by the HPLC-PDA-ESI-MS technique. Among the extracts tested, açaí demonstrated the highest anti-hypochlorite and antioxidant activities, while the highest TPC value was found for the goji extract. All extracts demonstrated modest catalytic activity as Knoevenagel condensation catalysts.

Fate and distribution studies were conducted with [36Cl]-chlorine dioxide in avocados, eggs, onions, and sweet potatoes. Experiments utilized sealed, darkened chambers, 5 mg of 36ClO2 (g), and two-hour exposure periods. Total radioactive residues were quantitated in gas purges, tank rinses, reaction chambers, and on fractions specific to each food. Deposition of the radioactive residue was mostly a surface phenomenon; transfer of radioactivity into albumen occurred in egg, but radioactivity did not penetrate the onion tunic and only small amounts of activity were present in avocado flesh. Potato skin contained essentially all the potato radiochlorine. Regardless of the food product, nearly all radioactive residue was present in edible tissues as chloride ions; the chlorite ion was present only in egg-rinse water. Small amounts (10% or less) of radioactivity were present as chlorate ions, which would be a useful marker compound for chlorine dioxide sanitation.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the variability in elemental composition of seven medicinal plants and their respective soils belonging to protected and nearby unprotected sites of the Hazarganji Chiltan National Park. The medical plants under study were Achillea wilhelmsii C. Koch, Peganum harmala Linn, Sophora mollis (Royle) Baker, Perovskia atriplicifolia Benth, Seriphidium quettense (Podlech.) Ling, Hertia intermedia (Bioss) O. Ktze, and Nepeta praetervisa Rech. F. Macro (C, H, N, S, K, Ca), micro (Cl, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn), beneficial (Al, Co, Na), others (As, Br, Cr, Cs, Hf, Pb, Rb, Sb, Sr, Sn, V and Th) and rare earth elements (Ce, Eu, La, Lu, Nd Sc, Sm, Tb and Yb) were characterized by means of standard organic elemental and instrumental neutron activation methodologies and by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. Results showed that, among macro nutrients, carbon concentration was the highest element in both plant and soil samples followed by H and K. Elements such as Cl, Na and Fe were detected in considerably good amounts; all the other elements were found in trace quantities. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to identify spatial variation in elemental composition of medicinal plants, in which 80-90% of the total variance in whole set of data was found. In particular, the findings highlighted the presence of essential and beneficial elements such as C, H, N, K, Ca, Fe, Mn and Na, in samples from protected sites, while potentially dangerous elements such as Al, As, Br and Cr were detected in samples from unprotected sites. These results emphasized on the need for rational exploitation of valuable medicinal plants and supporting protected areas as an excellent source of biodiversity conservation.

Changes in bacterial concentration and composition in drinking water during distribution are often attributed to biological (in)stability. Here we assessed temporal biological stability in a full-scale distribution network (DN) supplied with different types of source water: treated and chlorinated surface water and chlorinated groundwater produced at three water treatment plants (WTP). Monitoring was performed weekly during 12 months in two locations in the DN. Flow cytometric total and intact cell concentration (ICC) measurements showed considerable seasonal fluctuations, which were different for two locations. ICC varied between 0.1-3.75 × 105 cells mL-1 and 0.69-4.37 × 105 cells mL-1 at two locations respectively, with ICC increases attributed to temperature-dependent bacterial growth during distribution. Chlorinated water from the different WTP was further analysed with a modified growth potential method, identifying primary and secondary growth limiting compounds. It was observed that bacterial growth in the surface water sample after chlorination was primarily inhibited by phosphorus limitation and secondly by organic carbon limitation, while carbon was limiting in the chlorinated groundwater samples. However, the ratio of available nutrients changed during distribution, and together with disinfection residual decay, this resulted in higher bacterial growth potential detected in the DN than at the WTP. In this study, bacterial growth was found to be higher (i) at higher water temperatures, (ii) in samples with lower chlorine residuals and (iii) in samples with less nutrient (carbon, phosphorus, nitrogen, iron) limitation, while this was significantly different between the samples of different origin. Thus drinking water microbiological quality and biological stability could change during different seasons, and the extent of these changes depends on water temperature, the water source and treatment. Furthermore, differences in primary growth limiting nutrients in different water sources could contribute to biological instability in the network, where mixing occurs.

The concentration and distribution of Mg, P, Cl, K, Cu and Zn in the dorsal hippocampus CA1 region of rat brains were studied during memory consolidation and reconsolidation processes stimulated with inhibitory avoidance (IA) tests. Experimental rats were divided into four groups: i) group not submitted to inhibitory avoidance task (IA-N); ii) group submitted to inhibitory avoidance training session (IA-Y); iii) group submitted to inhibitory avoidance reactivation session but did not step down from the platform (IAR-N); and iv) group submitted to avoidance reactivation session and stepped down from the platform (IAR-Y). Elemental concentration and distribution in the CA1 hippocampus region were obtained through the Particle-Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) technique. The results indicate that the concentration of Mg, P, Cl, K and Cu increased during memory consolidation. During the memory reconsolidation process, the concentrations of Mg, P, Cl and K increased, while Cu and Zn had no significant changes with respect to their basal condition. These results show that the major part of these elements may be engaged in memory consolidation could be also participating in memory reconsolidation. For all elements, the general trend related to their concentration did not change during reconsolidation regardless the presence of a novelty event, i.e. stepping down from the platform.

Flame retardants (FRs) are useful because they can prevent combustion and delay the spread of fire after the ignition on commercial products containing plastics. However, such commercial products could be a primary source of environmental contamination with FRs. Plastic disks containing FRs were prepared to elucidate changes in the concentrations of the FRs after weathering tests. Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) and polycarbonate (PC) resin were separately kneaded with a combination of three organic FRs [Dechlorane plus (DP), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), and triphenyl phosphate (TPhP)] and one inorganic FR [antimony trioxide (Sb2O3)]. The concentrations of TBBPA/TPhP and DP/Sb2O3 in the final preparations were respectively 1000 and 500 mg/kg in compliance with the RoHS directive on organobromine FR. The concentrations of elements in the final preparations were 300 mg/kg for chlorine, 600 mg/kg for bromine, 100 mg/kg for phosphorus, and 400 mg/kg for antimony, respectively. The analytical concentrations (three FRs and four elements) were consistent with the expected concentrations (maximum difference -9.5% in the PC disks). The FRs and elements in the disks were sufficiently homogenous (maximum inhomogeneity 4.3% in the PC disks). The prepared disks were subjected to weathering tests; the concentrations of TBBPA in the disks decreased significantly (30 to 40%) whereas the concentrations of the elements did not change under the condition of this study. On the other hand, there were no drastic differences on relationships of FRs and elements such as DP/chlorine and TPhP/phosphorus.

Human dopaminergic system in general, and substantia nigra (SN) neurons, in particular, are implicated in the pathologies underlying the human brain aging. The interplay between aberrations in the structural organization and elemental composition of SN neuron bodies has recently gained in importance as selected metals: Fe, Cu, Zn, Ca were found to trigger oxidative-stress-mediated aberration in their molecular assembly due to concomitant protein (alpha-synuclein, tau-protein) aggregation, gliosis and finally oxidative stress. In the present study, we demonstrate an integrated approach to the analysis of the structural organization, assembly, and metals' accumulation in two distinct areas of SN: in the neuromelanin neurons and neuropil. By using the highly brilliant source of PETRA III and the Kirkpatrick-Baez nano-focus, large area histological brain slices are scanned at the sub-neuronal resolution, taking advantage of continuous motor movement and reduced acquisition time. Elemental analysis with synchrotron radiation based X-ray Fluorescence (SRXRF) is combined with X-ray Phase Contrast Imaging (XPCI) to correct for inherent aberrations in the samples' density and thickness, often referred to as the mass thickness effect. Based on the raw SRXRF spectra, we observed the accumulation of P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Fe, Cu and Zn predominantly in the SN neurons. However, upon the mass thickness correction, the distributions of Cl became significantly more uniform. Simultaneously with the fluorescence signal, the Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) is recorded by a pixel detector positioned in the far-field, enabling fast online computation of the darkfield and differential phase contrast (DPC). The data has demonstrated the SN neurons and neuropil produces excellent contrast which is due to their different mass density and scattering strength, indicative of differences in local structure and assembly therein. In all, the results show that combined SRXRF-XPCI-SAXS experiments can robustly serve as a unique tool for understanding the interplay between the chemical composition and structural organization that may drive the biochemical age-related processes occurring in the human dopaminergic system.

A disregarded nutritional feature of cheeses is their high acid-forming potential when ingested, which is associated with deleterious effects on consumers' health. This work aimed to characterize the acid-forming potential of a blue-veined cheese during manufacturing to identify the main steps of the process involved in this phenomenon. Sampling was performed on 3 batches at 10 steps of the cheese-making process: reception of raw milk, pasteurization, maturation of milk, coagulation, stirring, draining of the curds, and 4 ripening stages: 21, 28, 42, and 56d. The acid-forming potential of each sample was evaluated by (1) the calculation of the potential renal acid load (PRAL) index (considering protein, Cl, P, Na, K, Mg, and Ca contents), and (2) its organic anion content (lactate and citrate), considered as alkalinizing elements. Draining and salting were identified as the main steps responsible for generation of the acid-forming potential of cheese. The draining process induced an increase in the PRAL index from 1.2mEq/100g in milk to 10.4mEq/100g in drained curds due to the increase in dry matter and the loss of alkaline minerals into the whey. The increase in PRAL value (20.3mEq/100g at d 56) following salting resulted from an imbalance between the strong acidogenic elements (Cl, P, and proteins) and the main alkalinizing ones (Na and Ca). Particularly, Cl had a major effect on the PRAL value. Regarding organic anions, draining induced a loss of 93% of the citrate content in initial milk. The lactate content increased as fermentation occurred (1,297.9mg/100g in drained curds), and then decreased during ripening (519.3mg/100g at d 56). This lactate level probably helps moderate the acidifying potential of end products. Technological strategies aimed at limiting the acid-forming potential of cheeses are proposed and deserve further research to evaluate their nutritional relevance.

In the present study, lab-scale physical refining processes were investigated for their effects on the formation of 3-monochloropropane-1,2-diol (3-MCPD) esters. The potential precursors, partial acylglycerols and chlorines were determined before each refining step. 3-MCPD esters were not detected in degummed and bleached oil when the crude oils were extracted by solvent. While in the hot squeezed crude oils, 3-MCPD esters were detected with low amounts. 3-MCPD esters were generated with maximum values in 1-1.5h at a certain deodorizing temperature (220-260°C). Chlorine seemed to be more effective precursor than partial acylglycerol. By washing bleached oil before deodorization with ethanol solution, the precursors were removed partially and the content of 3-MCPD esters decreased to some extent accordingly. Diacetin was found to reduce 3-MCPD esters effectively.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a pathological condition characterized by heterogeneous etiology, pathogenesis, and clinical symptoms. These characteristics dictate the necessity of prescribing multiple medications for the treatment of IBS. Such compulsory polypharmacy inadvertently enhances the risk of adverse reactions to the treatment, increases its cost, and impairs compliance on the part of the patients. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the administration of the clorine-bromine brine with the use of sinusoidal modulated current electrophoresis (SMC-phoresis) for the treatment of different forms of IBS. THE PATIENTS AND METHODS: We examined and treated 80 patients with different forms of IBS. The patients were divided into two equal groups comprised of 40 patients each. The patients of the study group were treated with the use of SMС-phoresis of the bromine-chlorine brine based at the «Varzi-yatchi¼ spa and health resort (the Udmurt Republic) making use of the sparing or stimulating techniques depending on the type of IBS. Each therapeutic course consisted of 10-12 sessions. The patients in the group of comparison received the standard pharmaceutical treatment for IBS (myotropic anti-spasmodics and lactulose). The emphasis was laid on the evaluation of dynamics of the intestinal motor function in different variants of IBS with the use of the EGS-4M apparatus based on the GSRS questionnaire (Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale). Special attention was given to the interpretation of the main gastrointestinal syndromes and the evaluation of the quality of life of the patients in the course of the treatment and after its completion. RESULTS: Тhe main symptoms of IBS after a course of SMC-phoresis with the natural brine were significantly less pronounced compared to those in the patients managed by means of standard pharmacotherapy. Positive dynamics in the clinical picture of the disease had beneficial influence on the quality of life of the patients which approached that of the healthy subjects in the group of comparison. The results of colonography suggested the presence of various types of disturbances of motor function of the intestines. SMC-phoresis of the natural chlorine-bromine brine had a positive influence on dyskinesia associated with diarrhea and constipation associated with IBS, while the effect of the standard pharmaceutical treatment was unidirectional and significantly inferior to it in terms of efficiency. CONCLUSION: The use of complementary therapy can provide a better clinical outcome of IBS and to a greater extent improve the quality of life of the patients presenting with various forms of this pathology.

A simple and fast method for the multi-elemental determination of 18 inorganic constituents (P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, Cr, V, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Br, Rb, Sr, Ba and Pb) in organic fertilizers employing slurry sampling and total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF) is presented. A 2(3) factorial design with a central point was employed to optimize the slurry sampling procedure. The internal standard and instrumental conditions were optimized by univariate studies. The selectivity of the method to determining Se, As, Pb, Cr, Ni and Cd was assessed. The accuracy was evaluated by the analysis of four standard reference materials (SRM). The recoveries varied from 72% to 114%. For most of the elements, good agreement was achieved between the certified value and the value measured in the SRM. The relative standard deviation (RSD %) ranged from 0.5% to 14%. The evaluated method was applied to the determination of analytes in the press cake of palm, castor, curcas, sunflower, fodder turnip, white lupin, rapeseed and pequi, and their potential to be used as organic fertilizer was evaluated in accordance with Brazilian legislation.

Glass ionomer cements (GICs) are restorative materials, which clinical use has increased significantly during the last decade. The aim of the present study was to analyze the chemical constitution and surface morphology of four glass ionomer cements: Maxxion R, VitroFill, Vidrion R and Vitremer. Twelve polyethylene tubes with an internal diameter of 3 and 3 mm in length were prepared, filled and then transferred to a chamber with 95% relative humidity and a temperature of 37°C. The surface morphology of the tested materials was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and main components were investigated by energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX). Scanning electron microscopy revealed irregular and rough external surface. Cracking was not observed. The main constituents were found to be aluminum, silicon, calcium, sodium and fluoride. Phosphorus, sulfur and barium were only observed in Vidrion R, while chlorine were only observed in Maxxion R. Elemental mapping of the outer surface revealed high concentration of aluminum and silicon. Significant irregularities on the surface of the tested materials were observed. The chemical constitution of all GIC was similar.

For the first time in the literature, application of a GC-ICP-MS/MS method for the selective and sensitive detection of specific heteroatoms of phosphorus, sulfur, and chlorine has been accomplished. As a proof of concept, organophosphorus, organosulfur, and organochlorine pesticides in various food matrices have been studied. For the detection of organophosphorus and organosulfur pesticides, oxygen was used in the collision reaction cell (CRC) to convert P (m/z 31) to PO(+) (m/z 47) and S (m/z 32) to SO(+) (m/z 48). Similarly, ClH2(+) (m/z 37) was monitored after the reaction of Cl (m/z 35) with hydrogen in the CRC for the determination of organochlorine pesticides. Real food samples (baby food purees, fresh vegetables, loose tea) were screened for their pesticide content, following preparation of triplicate extracts using QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe). Excellent linearity with correlation coefficients R ≥ 0.997 was achieved, and the lowest detection limits obtained for the organophosphorus, organosulfur, and organochlorine pesticides were 0.0005, 0.675, and 0.144 µg/kg, respectively.

In this study, a battery of genotoxicity assays for monitoring drinking water was performed to assess the quality of the water resulting from the treatment plants. Five different types of samples were collected: raw water (P1), treated after pre-chlorination (P2), treated after decantation (P3), treated post-chlorination (P4), and consumers' taps (P5-P12). This study aims to evaluate the formation/occurrence of mutagenic and/or genotoxic compounds in surface drinking waters treated with chlorine disinfectant, during four seasonal experiments: summer, autumn, winter, and spring between 2012 and 2013 by bacterial reverse mutation assay in both Salmonella typhimurium TA98 and TA100 strains with or without metabolic activation system (S9 mix) and Allium cepa root meristematic cells, respectively. All of water samples, except at P1, P2, and P5 in summer; P1 in autumn; and P1 and P3-P12 in spring without S9 mix, and at P1 and P2 in summer and P6 and P8-P12 in spring with S9 mix, were found to be mutagenic in S. typhimurium TA98. However, only P11 and P12 in winter were found to be mutagenic for TA100 without S9 mix. The tested preparations in Allium anaphase-telophase test revealed a significant decrease in mitotic index (MI) and a simultaneous increase in chromosome aberrations (CAs) compared to the control. The bridge, stickiness, vagrant chromosomes, and disturbed chromosome aberrations were observed in anaphase-telophase cells. Physicochemical analysis, trihalomethanes (THMs), romoform (CHBr3), chloroform (CHCl3), bromodichloromethane (CHBrCl2), and dibromochloromethane (CHBr2Cl) levels in water samples were also determined. The results show also that this short-term battery tests are applicable in the routine monitoring of drinking water quality before and after distribution.

The Danish waste management system relies significantly on waste-to-energy (WtE) plants. The ash produced at the energy recovery section (boiler ash) is classified as hazardous waste, and is commonly mixed with fly ash and air pollution control residues before disposal. In this study, a detailed characterization of boiler ash from a Danish grate-based mass burn type WtE was performed, to evaluate the potential for improving ash management. Samples were collected at 10 different points along the boiler's convective part, and analysed for grain size distribution, content of inorganic elements, polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD and PCDF), and leaching of metals. For all samples, PCDD and PCDF levels were below regulatory limits, while high pH values and leaching of e.g. Cl were critical. No significant differences were found between boiler ash from individual sections of the boiler, in terms of total content and leaching, indicating that separate management of individual ash fractions may not provide significant benefits.

The predominant microorganisms in samples taken from shower heads in residences in the Korean city "N" were Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Sphingomonas paucimobilis, Acidovorax temperans, and Microbacterium lacticum. Legionella was not detected in this case. The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) vinylacetate, NN-DMA, cis-1,2-dichloroethylene, epichlorohydrin, and styrene were measured in five types of plastic pipes: PVC, PB, PP, PE, and cPVC. The rate of multiplication of the heterotrophic plate count (HPC) attached on the copper pipe in contact with hot tap water was higher than the rate for the copper pipe in contact with cold tap water. Biofilm accumulation on stainless steel pipes with added acetate (3 mg/L) was 2.56 times higher than the non-supplemented condition. Therefore, the growth of HPC in the pipe system was affected by the type and availability of nutrients and depended on variables such as heating during the hot water supply.

The gas phase catalytic hydrodechlorination (HDC) of chlorobenzene (CB) at atmospheric pressure was investigated over silica-supported cobalt and cobalt phosphide catalysts containing different P loading and a fixed amount of cobalt (5 wt.%). The effect of the initial P/Co molar ratio on the stoichiometry of the cobalt phosphide phase, the acidity and the hydrogen activation capability were discussed and these properties correlated with the catalytic activity. Catalytic results indicated that the cobalt phosphide phase is much more active than the monometallic cobalt one. The activity raised with the P content present in the sample due to the formation of the CoP phase instead of the Co2P one, which favored the formation of hydrogen spillover species, increased the amount of weak acid sites and the number of exposed superficial cobalt atoms probably related to a better dispersion of the active phase. All the catalysts gave rise benzene as the main reaction product.
