BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate dynamic urinary proteome changes of electroacupuncture (EP) on cerebral ischemia-reperfusion (CI/R) injured rats and to explore the therapeutic biological mechanisms of EP. METHODS: First, changed urinary proteins were found in EP stimulation in healthy rats. Then, we used a CI/R injury rat model induced by Pulsinelli's four-vessel occlusion (4-VO) method to explore the function of EP on urinary proteome in CI/R injury. Urine samples were collected for proteome analysis by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and bioinformatics analysis. RESULTS: In total, 384 proteins were identified, among which 47 proteins (23 upregulated, 24 downregulated) were differentially expressed with 0.6-log FC and p < .05. Gene ontology analysis revealed that the cell redox homeostasis, acute-phase response, response to lipopolysaccharide, and cellular response to glucocorticoid stimulus were significantly enriched. The partially biologically connected differential proteins were found by the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis in the EP group. With the CI/R rat model, 80 proteins (27 upregulated, 53 downregulated) were significantly changed in the CI/R rats compared to the controls. Among these differentially expressed proteins (DEPs), 23 proteins (17 upregulated, six downregulated) showed significant changes after EP treatment (0.6-log FC change, p < .05). The main related biological processes were aging, immune response, acute-phase response, liver regeneration, protein catabolic process, and response to oxidative stress. Many metabolic pathways were enriched by KEGG analysis. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that the EP could alleviate cerebral damage induced by ischemia-reperfusion through an anti-inflammatory and metabolism regulation mechanism. The urinary proteome might reflect the pathophysiological changes in EP pretreatment in the treatment and prevention of CI/R injury.

Objective: Leukemia is the most prevalent cancer among children and adolescents. This study investigated the potential association between exposure to magnetic fields and the risk of pediatric leukemia. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search of electronic databases, including Scopus, EMBASE, Cochrane, Web of Science, and Medline, up to December 15, 2022, to identify relevant studies examining the link between childhood leukemia and magnetic field exposure. Results: The first meta-analysis revealed a statistically significant inverse association between pediatric leukemia and magnetic field strengths ranging from 0.4 µT to 0.2 µT, suggesting a reduced risk associated with this range. The second meta-analysis focused on wiring configuration codes and observed a potential link between residential magnetic field exposure and childhood leukemia. Pooled relative risk estimates were 1.52 (95% CI = 1.05-2.04, P = .021) and 1.58 (95% CI = 1.15-2.23, P = .006) for exposure to 24-hour magnetic field measurements, suggesting a possible causal relationship. In the third meta-analysis, the odds ratios for the exposure groups of 0.1 to 0.2 µT, 0.2 to 0.3 µT, 0.3 to 0.4 µT, and 0.4 µT above 0.2 µT were 1.09 (95% confidence interval = 0.82 to 1.43 µT), 1.14 (95% confidence interval = 0.68 to 1.92 µT), and 1.45 (95% confidence interval = 0.87 to 2.37 µT), respectively. In contrast to the findings of the three meta-analyses, there was no evidence of a statistically significant connection between exposure to 0.2 µT and the risk of juvenile leukemia. A further result showed no discernible difference between the two groups of children who lived less than 100 meters from the source of magnetic fields and those who lived closer (OR = 1.33; 95% CI = 0.98-1.73 µT). Conclusions: The collective results of three meta-analyses, encompassing magnetic field strengths ranging from 0.1 µT to 2.38 µT, underscore a statistically significant association between the intensity of magnetic fields and the occurrence of childhood leukemia. However, one specific analysis concluded that no apparent relationship exists between exposure to 0.1 µT and an elevated risk of leukemia development in children.

Hepatic insulin resistance (IR), as a downstream sequela of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is strongly associated with liver steatosis. Despite numerous mechanism advancements, the molecular underpinnings and pathogenesis of hepatic IR, especially regarding the pattern recognition receptors in hepatocytes, remain elusive. Here, we identified hepatocyte NLRP3 as a direct and previously-unresolved driver of hepatic IR to promote steatosis response. Under the model of NAFLD, we identified hepatocyte NLRP3 as a crucial inducer of hepatic IR by undertaking multilayer transcriptomic searches and further confirmed that its expression was increased in the liver tissues from NAFLD patients and mouse models (high-fat diet (HFD), leptin-receptor-deficient (db/db) mice), and in palmitic acid (PA)-induced hepatocytes. Loss- or gain-of-function of hepatocyte-specific NLRP3 in HFD-induced mice ameliorated or exacerbated hepatic IR and steatosis, respectively. Mechanistically, NLRP3 directly bound to and promoted protein kinase C epsilon (PKCε) activation to impair insulin signaling and increase liver steatosis, while inhibition of PKCε activation dampened the beneficial effects seen in HFD-induced NLRP3-deficient mice. Moreover, we performed screening and discovered that the transcription factor Yin Yang 1 (YY1) positively controlled NLRP3 expression. In translational potential, adeno-associated virus serotype 8 (AAV8)-mediated NLRP3 knockdown in the liver alleviated hepatic IR and steatosis in db/db mice, and pharmacological inhibition of NLRP3 markedly alleviated diet-induced metabolic disorders. This finding reveals a previously-unexpected regulatory axis from YY1 to PKCε via NLRP3 induction for metabolic diseases and establishes the YY1-NLRP3-PKCε axis as a potential therapeutic target for NAFLD.

Pheretima with various activities is a commonly used animal-derived traditional medicine in Asia countries. However, almost half of them are non-pharmacopoeia species in the market due to the similar morphological characteristics between medicinal and non-medicinal species. This study aims to establish an effective method based on signature peptides for species authentication of three main commercial Pheretima, including two major Pheretima species (Amynthas aspergillum, Metaphire vulgaris) and one main adulteration (Metaphire magna). Firstly, the species of 52 batches of commercial Pheretima were authenticated based on DNA barcodes. Secondly, proteomic analysis was performed for protein characterization of three main commercial Pheretima. Furthermore, their signature peptides were screened and validated using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode. Moreover, a simplified sample processing method was developed. Finally, large quantities of commercial Pheretima samples were analyzed for further verifying the feasibility of the signature peptides-based method. The result showed that the established method had a great application potential for authenticity identification of commercial Pheretima. SIGNIFICANCE: The authenticity assessment of medicinal materials is a main issue in the quality control process as deceptive practices could imply severe health risks. In this study, a rapid and simple method based on signature peptides was established for species authentication of three main commercial Pheretima, which can be an effective alternative to complex DNA barcoding and difficult morphological identification, and provided a reference for improvement of Pheretima quality standards.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Suhuang antitussive capsule (SH capsule), a typical traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) compound, is widely used for the treatment of post-infectious cough (PIC) in the clinic. Our previous studies have demonstrated that SH capsule possesses significant ameliorative effects on cough variant asthma (CVA), sputum obstruction and airway remodeling. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study is designed to investigate the ameliorative effects and potential mechanisms of SH capsule on PIC in mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To establish the PIC model, ICR mice were induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (3 mg/kg) once, followed by cigarettes smoke (CS) exposure for 30 min per day for 30 days. Mice were intragastrically (i.g.) administrated with SH capsule at the doses of 3.5, 7, 14 g/kg each day for 2 weeks since the 24th day. The number of coughs, coughs latencies, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and histological analysis were used to investigate the effects of SH capsule on PIC mice. Quantitative-polymerase chain reaction (Q-PCR) and western blotting were conducted to evaluate the levels of mRNA and proteins associated with Aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR)-NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathway. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH) and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) assays were performed to evaluate the oxidative stress. A549 cells were used to investigate the ameliorative effects of SH capsule in vitro. RESULTS: SH capsule effectively diminished the number of coughs and extended coughs latencies in PIC mice. The airway inflammation was alleviated by decreasing the expression levels of inflammatory mediators including tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) and interleukin-6 (IL-6). Moreover, SH capsule dose-dependently activated AhR-Nrf2 pathway and induced the nuclear translocation in vitro and in vivo. Besides, SH capsule significantly increased the levels of SOD, GSH and T-AOC in mice. CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrates that SH capsule ameliorates airway inflammation-associated PIC in mice through activating AhR-Nrf2 pathway and consequently alleviating inflammatory responses and oxidative stress.

Methylophiopogonanone A (MOA) is an abundant homoisoflavonoid in the Chinese herb Ophiopogonis Radix. Recent investigations revealed that MOA inhibited several human cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYPs) and stimulated OATP1B1. However, the inhibitory effects of MOA on phase II drug-metabolizing enzymes, such as human UDP-glucuronosyltransferases (hUGTs), have not been well investigated. Herein, the inhibition potentials of MOA on hUGTs were assessed. The results clearly demonstrated that MOA dose-dependently inhibited all tested hUGTs including UGT1A1 (IC50 = 1.23 µM), one of the most important detoxification enzymes in humans. Further investigations showed that MOA strongly inhibited UGT1A1-catalysed NHPH-O-glucuronidation in a range of biological settings including hUGT1A1, human liver microsomes (HLM) and HeLa cells overexpressing UGT1A1. Inhibition kinetic analyses demonstrated that MOA competitively inhibited UGT1A1-catalysed NHPH-O-glucuronidation in both hUGT1A1 and HLM, with Ki values of 0.52 and 1.22 µM, respectively. Collectively, our findings expanded knowledge of the interactions between MOA and human drug-metabolizing enzymes, which would be very helpful for guiding the use of MOA-related herbal products in clinical settings.

Strong inhibition of the human UDP-glucuronosyltransferase enzymes (UGTs) may lead to undesirable effects, including hyperbilirubinaemia and drug/herb-drug interactions. Currently, there is no good way to examine the inhibitory effects and specificities of compounds toward all the important human UGTs, side-by-side and under identical conditions. Herein, we report a new, broad-spectrum substrate for human UGTs and its uses in screening and characterizing of UGT inhibitors. Following screening a variety of phenolic compound(s), we have found that methylophiopogonanone A (MOA) can be readily O-glucuronidated by all tested human UGTs, including the typical N-glucuronidating enzymes UGT1A4 and UGT2B10. MOA-O-glucuronidation yielded a single mono-O-glucuronide that was biosynthesized and purified for structural characterization and for constructing an LC-UV based MOA-O-glucuronidation activity assay, which was then used for investigating MOA-O-glucuronidation kinetics in recombinant human UGTs. The derived Km values were crucial for selecting the most suitable assay conditions for assessing inhibitory potentials and specificity of test compound(s). Furthermore, the inhibitory effects and specificities of four known UGT inhibitors were reinvestigated by using MOA as the substrate for all tested UGTs. Collectively, MOA is a broad-spectrum substrate for the human UGTs, which offers a new and practical tool for assessing inhibitory effects and specificities of UGT inhibitors.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Suhuang antitussive capsule (Suhuang), one of traditional antitussive Chinese patent medicines, has been used for the treatment of post-infectious cough and cough variant asthma in clinical practice. It has been demonstrated to show numerous biological actions including antitussive and anti-inflammatory effects. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aims to investigate the effects of Suhuang on non-resolving inflammation and its underlying molecular mechanism. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In vitro, mitochondrial membrane potential and ROS were detected by flow cytometry analysis. mtDNA release and mPTP fluorescence were determined by Q-PCR and fluorescence microplate reader analysis. Cytochrome C release and 8-OHdG levels were evaluated by ELISA. Additionally, the effects of Suhuang on Drp1, MMP9, IκBα/NF-κB and NLRP3/ASC/Caspase-1 expression were determined by Q-PCR, gelatin zymography or immunoblot analysis. In vivo, C57/BL6 mice were orally administrated for 2 weeks with Suhuang, then lung injury was induced by LPS. Inflammatory mediators mRNA, histological assessment and NF-κB/Caspase-1/IL-1ß levels were evaluated by Q-PCR, H&E staining and immunoblot analysis. Two sepsis models of mice were further used to evaluate its anti-inflammatory effects. RESULTS: Suhuang restored mitochondrial homeostasis by inhibiting Drp1 activation and mitochondrial fission. Besides, Suhuang reduced mPTP opening, mitochondrial membrane potential collapse, ROS overproduction and mtDNA release. Moreover, Suhuang down-regulated MMP9 expression. As a consequence of preserved mitochondrial homeostasis, Suhuang inhibited NF-κB pathway activation by prevention of NF-κB-p65 phosphorylation and IκBα degradation. Suhuang also limited NLRP3 inflammasome activation by blocking NLRP3-ASC interaction and promoting NLRP3 ubiquitination degradation. Drp1 knockdown in vitro diminished the inhibitory effects of Suhuang on inflammatory responses, indicating the essential role of Drp1 in the Suhuang's activity. Consistently, the therapeutic effects of Suhuang were confirmed in LPS-inhaled mice, which recapitulated the protective actions of Suhuang in mitochondrial homeostasis in vitro. Additionally, two sepsis models of mice confirmed the inhibitory effects of Suhuang on uncontrolled inflammation. CONCLUSIONS: Altogether, our work reveals that Suhuang inhibits non-resolving inflammation through inhibition of NF-κB signaling and NLRP3 inflammasome activation by preserving mitochondrial homeostasis, providing new pharmacological data for the clinical use of Suhuang. Our study also suggests mitochondrial homeostasis as a potential intrinsic regulatory strategy for treating inflammatory diseases.

Human carboxylesterase 1A1 (hCES1A) is a promising target for the treatment of hyperlipidemia and obesity-associated metabolic diseases. To date, the highly specific and efficacious hCES1A inhibitors are rarely reported. This study aims to find potent and highly specific hCES1A inhibitors from herbs, and to investigate their inhibitory mechanisms. Following large-scale screening of herbal products, Styrax was found to have the most potent hCES1A inhibition activity. After that, a practical bioactivity-guided fractionation coupling with a chemical profiling strategy was used to identify the fractions from Styrax with strong hCES1A inhibition activity and the major constituents in these bioactive fractions were characterized by LC-TOF-MS/MS. The results demonstrated that seven pentacyclic triterpenoid acids (PTAs) in two bioactive fractions from Styrax potently inhibit hCES1A, with IC50 values ranging from 41 nM to 478 nM. Among all the identified PTAs, epibetulinic acid showed the most potent inhibition activity and excellent specificity towards hCES1A. Both inhibition kinetic analyses and in silico analysis suggested that epibetulinic acid potently inhibited hCES1A in a mixed inhibition manner. Collectively, our findings demonstrate that some PTAs in Styrax are potent and highly specific inhibitors of hCES1A and these constituents can be used as promising lead compounds for the development of more efficacious hCES1A inhibitors.

G-quadruplex DNA has become an important target for tumor therapy and anti-tumor development. Modern pharmacology has proved that Macleaya cordata has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-tumor and other pharmacological effects. Affinity ultrafiltration method can screen active ingredients from compounds rapidly, but G-quadruplex DNA ligands are difficult to dissociate, which is a key step in conventional ultrafiltration method. In this paper, the filtrates after ultrafiltration were determined by HPLC-MS in substitution. The peaks with 20% reduction of MS response from the incubation vs control were considered to be ligand components to G-quadruplex. Two of the peaks with the relative abundance above 30% were identified as sanguinarine(SAN) and chelerine(CHE). Their circular dichroism conformations further proved that SAN and CHE are active ligands of HT4. In addition, another two gradients with high relative abundance were identified as protopine(PRO) and allpcryprotopine(ALL). The binding rate of SAN, CHE, PRO and ALL was calculated according to the HPLC-MS results, and the results showed a consistency with that of the molecular docking method. The proposed method can be used to screen active components from mixture.

Suhuang antitussive capsule (SH), one of traditional Chinese patent medicines, has been widely used for treating cough variant asthma and postinfectious cough in clinic. The objective of this work is to identify the characteristic and active ingredients as the quality control markers for SH based on high performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detector (HPLC-PDA) fingerprint and screening of anti-inflammatory components. Similarity analysis (SA), hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA) were used to evaluate 16 different batches of SH. 13 compounds accounting for 36% of the total components in the fingerprint were identified and semi-quantitatively analyzed, which anti-inflammatory activity was tested with the in vitro assay. The results showed that the established chemical fingerprint could clearly distinguish different batches of SH by SA, HCA, and PCA analysis. Furthermore, four known compounds (chlorogenic acid, schisandrin, angeloylgomisin H and praeruptorin A) were screened out to be the most discriminant variables, which could be applied to quality control of SH by quantitative analysis. The semi-quantitative results showed that six compounds were major components, i.e. arctiin (10.28 ±â€¯3.18 mg/g), ephedrine (9.26 ±â€¯1.58 mg/g), schisandrin (3.09 ±â€¯0.83 mg/g), pseudoephedrine (2.34 ±â€¯1.04 mg/g), schisandrin B (1.48 ±â€¯0.16 mg/g), and 1-caffeoylquinic acid (1.36 ±â€¯0.42 mg/g). The anti-inflammatory results showed that SH extract, praeruptorin A, schisandrin, arctigenin and pseudoephedrine could significantly inhibit inflammatory mediator NO production in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages. These findings indicated that praeruptorin A, schisandrin, arctiin and pseudoephedrine could be proposed as the quality control markers for SH.

Pulmonary dysfunction is tightly associated with cough variant asthma (CVA), a respiratory damage disease. Suhuang antitussive capsule (Suhuang), one of traditional Chinese patent medicines, plays a crucial role in the treatment and complication of CVA in the long clinical application. In this study, we aimed to investigate the protective effects and underlying antitussive mechanisms of Suhuang on pulmonary function in ovalbumin (OVA)-induced CVA rats. Administration (i.g.) of Suhuang significantly alleviated pulmonary damage and dysfunction. Suhuang improved ER stress and PKCε translocation via regulation of Ca2+ trafficking. Suhuang also inhibited NLRP3 inflammasome activation, as evidenced by disrupting the assembly of NLRP3 inflammasome and reducing the expression of cleaved caspase-1, and decreased IL-1ß secretion. Besides, it's identified that TXNIP induction and RIP1-RIP3-Drp1 pathway were required for the inhibitory routes of Suhuang from ER stress to NLRP3 inflammasome activation. Consistent with the in vivo findings, Suhuang also attenuated ER stress/NLRP3 inflammasome activation, and thereby restored pulmonary homeostasis in vitro. Meantime, these functions were diminished by blocking ER stress, indicating that ER stress is essential for the effects of Suhuang on pulmonary function. A further in vivo analysis showed that Suhuang-driven pharmacological inactivation of NLRP3 inflammasome and amelioration of pulmonary dysfunction were reversed by an ER stress inducer tunicamycin, well confirming the beneficial effects of Suhuang on pulmonary function by regulation of ER stress. Collectively, these results indicated that Suhuang contributed to impairing NLRP3 inflammasome activation via inhibition of ER stress, which was responsible for the protection of pulmonary homeostasis. These findings may provide a pharmacological groundwork and important new experimental data regarding the clinical treatment of Suhuang in CVA patients.

This study developed a population pharmacokinetic model for sodium tanshinone IIA sulfonate (STS) in healthy volunteers and coronary heart disease (CHD) patients in order to identify significant covariates for the pharmacokinetics of STS. Blood samples were obtained by intense sampling approach from 10 healthy volunteers and sparse sampling from 25 CHD patients, and a population pharmacokinetic analysis was performed by nonlinear mixed-effect modeling. The final model was evaluated by bootstrap and visual predictive check. A total of 230 plasma concentrations were included, 137 from healthy volunteers and 93 from CHD patients. It was a two-compartment model with first-order elimination. The typical value of the apparent clearance (CL) of STS in CHD patients with total bilirubin (TBIL) level of 10 µmol(L-1 was 48.7 L(h-1 with inter individual variability of 27.4%, whereas that in healthy volunteers with the same TBIL level was 63.1 L(h-1. Residual variability was described by a proportional error model and estimated at 5.2%. The CL of STS in CHD patients was lower than that in healthy volunteers and decreased when TBIL levels increased. The bootstrap and visual predictive check confirmed the stability and validity of the final model. These results suggested that STS dosage adjustment might be considered based on TBIL levels in CHD patients.

Sputum obstruction is one of common cough complications, which is tightly associated with airway inflammation. Suhuang antitussive capsule (SH Capsule), a classic traditional Chinese medicine prescription, has been used for the treatment of post-cold cough and cough variant asthma in the long clinical application. This study aims to investigate the effects and underlying mechanisms of SH Capsule on LPS-induced sputum obstruction in mice. The results showed that SH Capsule effectively promoted the tracheal phenol red output and mucociliary clearance. SH Capsule also alleviated airway inflammation-mediated mucin 5AC (MUC5AC) level through EGFR-ERK signaling. A further in vivo analysis showed that HGF inhibitor SU11274 abrogated the effects of SH Capsule on MUC5AC, well demonstrating that HGF was required for the beneficial effects of SH Capsule on expectoration in vivo. Moreover, SH Capsule promoted HGF secretion in a colon-dependent manner, which reached lung tissues via blood circulation. Collectively, this study provided new pharmacological data for clinical use of SH Capsule, and proposed a novel mechanism by which SH Capsule was pharmacologically promising for treating sputum obstruction.

Palmitic acid (PA)-induced vascular endothelial inflammation plays a pivotal role in the occurrence and development of vascular diseases. The present study was conducted to examine the effect of homoplantaginin, a main flavonoid from a traditional Chinese medicine Salvia plebeia R. Br., on PA-treated human umbilical vein endothelial cells inflammation and the underlying molecular mechanism. Firstly, we found that homoplantaginin (0.1, 1, 10 µM) dose-dependently reduced expression of toll-like receptor-4 evoked by PA (100 µM). The inhibitory effect of homoplantaginin was further confirmed under lipopolysaccharide challenge. In addition, downstream adapted proteins including myeloid differentiation primary response gene 88, toll/interleukin-1 receptor-domain containing adaptor-inducing interferon-ß and tumor necrosis factors receptor associated factor-6 were successfully inhibited by homoplantaginin under PA treatment. Also, we found that homoplantaginin tightly controlled PA-induced reactive oxygen species to prevent nucleotide-binding domain-like receptor 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation by suppressing reactive oxygen species-sensitive thioredoxin-interacting protein, NLRP3, and caspase-1. Meanwhile, protein and mRNA levels of inflammatory mediators (interleukin-1ß, intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1, and monocyte chemotactic protein-1) were decreased by homoplantaginin. Furthermore, homoplantaginin restored PA-impaired nitric oxide generation. Taken together, these results indicated that homoplantaginin protected endothelial cells from ameliorating PA-induced endothelial inflammation via suppressing toll-like receptor-4 and NLRP3 pathways, and restoring nitric oxide generation, suggesting it may be a potential candidate for further development in the prevention and treatment of vascular diseases.

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) have been involved in inflammatory and degradative processes in pathologic conditions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the protective effect of melatonin in human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) monolayer permeability and the regulation of MMP9 induced by interleukin 1ß (IL1ß (IL1B)) in HUVECs. Protection studies were carried out with melatonin, a well-known antioxidant and antiinflammatory molecule. MMP9 expression was increased with IL1ß induction in HUVECs. Melatonin showed a barrier-protective role by downregulation of MMP9 and upregulation of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 expression in HUVECs. Meanwhile, melatonin also decreased sodium fluorescein permeability and counteracted the downregulation of vascular endothelial cadherin and occludin expression in HUVECs. During inflammatory stimulus, nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) plays a significant role in regulating MMP genes expression, thus the function of NF-κB in HUVECs' barrier disruption was investigated. IL1ß induced nuclear translocation of NF-κB in HUVECs and regulated MMP9 expression. However, NF-κB translocation into the nucleus was inhibited significantly by melatonin. Our results show that melatonin decreases the permeability of monolayer endothelial cell induced by IL1ß. At the same time, melatonin decreased the expression and activity of MMP9 by a NF-κB-dependent pathway in HUVECs induced by IL1ß.
