The ecotoxic endocrine-disrupting chemical di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is ubiquitous in agricultural soil, posing a serious threat to human health. Here, we report efficient soil-borne DEHP degradation and plant growth promotion by a microbial organic fertilizer GK-PPB prepared by combining a recycled garden waste-kitchen waste compost product with ternary compound microbial agent PPB-MA, composed of Penicillium oxalic MB08F, Pseudomonas simiae MB751, and Bacillus tequilensis MB05B. The combination of MB08F and MB751 provided synergistic phosphorus solubilization, and MB05B enhanced the DEHP degradation capacity of MB08F via bioemulsification. Under optimal conditions (25.70 °C and pH 7.62), PPB-MA achieved a 96.81 % degradation percentage for 1000 mg L-1 DEHP within 5 days. The degradation curve followed first-order kinetics with a half-life of 18.24 to 24.76 h. A complete mineralization pathway was constructed after identifying the degradation intermediates of 2H-labeled DEHP. Evaluation in Caenorhabditis elegans N2 showed that PPB-MA eliminated the ecological toxicity of DEHP. A pakchoi (Brassica chinensis L.) pot experiment demonstrated that GK-PPB promoted phosphorus solubilization and plant growth, reduced soil DEHP residue, and decreased DEHP accumulation in pakchoi, suggesting its potential practical utility in environmentally responsible and safe cultivation of vegetables.

BACKGROUND: Xiao-ai-ping injection (XAPI) combined with chemotherapy has potential efficacy and less side effects in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). At present, there are many clinical studies on XAPI combined with chemotherapy in the treatment of NSCLC, but the results are different. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of XAPI combined with chemotherapy in the treatment of NSCLC by meta-analysis system. METHODS: The databases to be searched include PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, Wanfang database, Chinese Scientific Journal Database, and so on. In addition, relevant journals and magazines will manually search in various fields as supplements. The search date is set from the establishment of the database until July 8, 2023. The 2 researchers will use Endnote X9 software for literature screening and data extraction and independently evaluate the quality. We then assessed the quality and risk of inclusion in the study and observed outcome indicators. RESULTS: A total of 28 trials were included in this study, 1947 patients with NSCLC (974 receiving XAPI combined chemotherapy and 973 receiving chemotherapy alone). The results of meta-analysis showed that: Objective tumor response rate of NSCLC (P < .00001). Improvement in Karnofsky performance score of NSCLC (P < .00001). Quality of life score of NSCLC (P < .00001). The result of CD3 + (P < .00001). The result of CD4 + (P < .00001). The result of CD8 + (P < .00001). The result of CD4+/CD8 + (P = .0001). Leukopenia (P < .00001). Thrombocytopenia (P < .00001). Hemoglobin decrease (P < .00001). Liver function (P = .04). Nausea and vomiting (P < .00001). CONCLUSION: Our meta-analyses demonstrated that XAPI adjunct with chemotherapy can improve the patient quality of life, reduce adverse reactions, and enhanced immune function, the treatment is effective and high safety. Which suggests that it might be used for NSCLC. However, a large sample of randomized controlled trials are needed to further study the long-term efficacy of XAPI.

Cancer constitutes a severe threat to human health and quality of life and is one of the most significant causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Natural dietary products have drawn substantial attention in cancer treatment and prevention due to their availability and absence of toxicity. Rosmarinic acid (RA) is known for its excellent antioxidant properties and is safe and effective in preventing and inhibiting tumors. This review summarizes recent publications on culture techniques, extraction processes, and anti-tumor applications of RA-enriched dietary supplements. We discuss techniques to improve RA bioavailability and provide a mechanistic discussion of RA regarding tumor prevention, treatment, and adjuvant therapy. RA exhibits anticancer activity by regulating oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, cell cycle, apoptosis, and metastasis. These data suggest that daily use of RA-enriched dietary supplements can contribute to tumor prevention and treatment. RA has the potential for application in anti-tumor drug development.

Inflammation and oxidative stress lead to various acute or chronic diseases, including pneumonia, liver and kidney injury, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, metabolic diseases, and cancer. Ginseng is a well-known and widely used ethnic medicine in Asian countries, and ginsenoside Rg3 is a saponin isolated from Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer, Panax notoginseng, or Panax quinquefolius L. This compound has a wide range of pharmacological properties, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, which have been evaluated in disease models of inflammation and oxidative stress. Rg3 can attenuate lung inflammation, prevent liver and kidney function damage, mitigate neuroinflammation, prevent cerebral and myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury, and improve hypertension and diabetes symptoms. The multitarget, multipathway mechanisms of action of Rg3 have been gradually deciphered. This review summarizes the existing knowledge on the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects and underlying molecular mechanisms of ginsenoside Rg3, suggesting that ginsenoside Rg3 may be a promising candidate drug for the treatment of diseases with inflammatory and oxidative stress conditions.

To observe a long-term prognosis in late-onset multiple acyl-coenzyme-A dehydrogenation deficiency (MADD) patients and to determine whether riboflavin should be administrated in the long-term and high-dosage manner, we studied the clinical, pathological and genetic features of 110 patients with late-onset MADD in a single neuromuscular center. The plasma riboflavin levels and a long-term follow-up study were performed. We showed that fluctuating proximal muscle weakness, exercise intolerance and dramatic responsiveness to riboflavin treatment were essential clinical features for all 110 MADD patients. Among them, we identified 106 cases with ETFDH variants, 1 case with FLAD1 variants and 3 cases without causal variants. On muscle pathology, fibers with cracks, atypical ragged red fibers (aRRFs) and diffuse decrease of SDH activity were the distinctive features of these MADD patients. The plasma riboflavin levels before treatment were significantly decreased in these patients as compared to healthy controls. Among 48 MADD patients with a follow-up of 6.1 years on average, 31 patients were free of muscle weakness recurrence, while 17 patients had episodes of slight muscle weakness upon riboflavin withdrawal, but recovered after retaking a small-dose of riboflavin for a short-term. Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed vegetarian diet and masseter weakness were independent risk factors for muscle weakness recurrence. In conclusion, fibers with cracks, aRRFs and diffuse decreased SDH activity could distinguish MADD from other genotypes of lipid storage myopathy. For late-onset MADD, increased fatty acid oxidation and reduced riboflavin levels can induce episodes of muscle symptoms, which can be treated by short-term and small-dose of riboflavin therapy.

Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana Linn.) is an evergreen fruit tree grown in Southeast Asia. The fruit of Mangosteen is dark purple spherical with a diameter of 5 to 8 centimeter, a hard rind and white flesh. The seeds and pericarps of the fruit have long been utilized as a traditional medicine in Southeast Asia (Ovalle-Magallanes et al. 2017). Surveys were conducted during the months from March to April 2019 of fruit markets located in Wujing Town, Shanghai (31°02'33″ N, 121°28'04″ E), one noteworthy postharvest disease was observed. Overall 116 fruit samples were collected from 5 different supermarkets, 10.3% (12) of the fruits were found infected with the same symptoms during cold storage. The infected fruits were subjected to pathogen isolation and characterization. The junction areas between diseased and healthy tissues were cut into small pieces of diameter 5 mm, which were surface sterilized with 0.5% NaClO solution for 3 min, followed by rinsing in sterile water thrice, and then the tissues were placed on sterilized potato dextrose agar (PDA) plates supplemented with 50 µg/ml streptomycin. The colony edges of resulted fungal cultures were cut and removed to new PDA plates for purification after 2 days incubation at 28°C. After 3 rounds of subculture, a total of 19 purified isolates were obtained and these isolates showed similar phenotypes in morphological characters. The fungal colonies were fast growing (25 mm per day at 28°C on PDA plates) and were circular shaped with massive aerial hyphae, white to ochraceous color. Non-septate hyphae were hyaline and the septa were found only at the branching points. Sporangiophores arose from hyphae or from stolons. Sporangiospores were hyaline, smooth-walled, mostly subspherical to ellipsoidal, and measured 1.34 to 2.73 µm (width) and 3.12 to 6.19 µm (length) (1.98 ± 0.36×4.46 ± 0.69, n=100)(Alvarez et al. 2011). Three independent isolates (GM-07, GM-16, GM-19) were selected used for further genetic analysis and pathogenicity test. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and the D1/D2 region of the nuclear large subunit ribosomal RNA gene (LSU) were amplified by primers ITS1/ITS4 and primers NL1/LR3, respectively (Walther et al. 2013). BLASTn analyses of ITS (MN081612, MN081613, MN087659) and LUS (MN080423, MN080422, MN080432) sequences exhibited 99 to 100% identify to Mucor irregularis strains HZ640, extr25 and CBS977.68 (Accession numbers KC461926, MH510278 of ITS and JX976214 of LUS). These observed morphological features and molecular identification indicated that the pathogen possessed identical characteristics as Mucor irregularis Stchigel, Cano, Guarro & Ed. Alvarez (Alvarez et al. 2011). To conduct a pathogenicity test (Al-Sadi et al. 2014), 20 µl of spore suspension (106 spores ml-1) were inoculated into five healthy mangosteen fruits by sterile syringes, meanwhile another five healthy fruits were injected with sterilized water as controls. All inoculated fruits were kept in sealed plastic boxes at 28°C with a 12L/12D illumination cycle and 90% relative humidity. After about 3 to 7 days, the inoculated materials showed similar symptoms to those on the original diseased fruits, while control samples remained symptomless. M. irregularis was successfully re-isolated from symptomatic fruits, fulfilling Koch's postulates. Only three plant species that can be infected by M. irregularis have been reported so far, including key lime from Oman (Al-Sadi et al. 2014), corn from China (Peng et al. 2015), and sorghum from Brazil (Lima et al. 2018). To our knowledge, this is the first report of M. irregularis causing the postharvest rot on mangosteen fruit in China.

Respiratory diseases, especially the pandemic of respiratory infectious diseases and refractory chronic lung diseases, remain a key clinical issue and research hot spot due to their high prevalence rates and poor prognosis. In this review, we aimed to summarize the recent advances in the therapeutic effects and molecular mechanisms of key common bioactive compounds from Chinese herbal medicine. Based on the theories of traditional Chinese medicine related to lung diseases, we searched several electronic databases to determine the high-frequency Chinese medicines in clinical application. The active compounds and metabolites from the selected medicines were identified using the Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology Database (TCMSP) by analyzing oral bioavailability and drug similarity index. Then, the pharmacological effects and molecular mechanisms of the selected bioactive compounds in the viral and bacterial infections, inflammation, acute lung injury (ALI), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary fibrosis, asthma, and lung cancer were summarized. We found that 31 bioactive compounds from the selected 10 common Chinese herbs, such as epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), kaempferol, isorhamnetin, quercetin, and ß-sitosterol, can mainly regulate NF-κB, Nrf2/HO-1, NLRP3, TGF-ß/Smad, MAPK, and PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathways to inhibit infection, inflammation, extracellular matrix deposition, and tumor growth in a series of lung-related diseases. This review provides novel perspectives on the preclinical study and clinical application of Chinese herbal medicines and their bioactive compounds against respiratory diseases.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a global public health crisis. There is a pressing need for evidence-based interventions to address the devastating clinical and public health effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Chinese scientists supported by private and government resources have adopted extensive efforts to identify effective drugs against the virus. To date, a large number of clinical trials addressing various aspects of COVID19 have been registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR), including more than 200 interventional studies. Under such an urgent circumstance, the scope and quality of these clinical studies vary significantly. Hence, this review aims to make a comprehensive analysis on the profiles of COVID-19 clinical trials registered in the ChiCTR, including a wide range of characteristics. Our findings will provide a useful summary on these clinical studies since most of these studies will encounter major challenges from the design to completion. It will be a long road for the outcomes of these studies to be published and international collaboration will help the ultimate goals of developing new vaccines and anti-viral drugs.

Silibinin, a natural product extracted from Silybum marianum (milk thistle), has been reported to have anti-inflammatory effect. The aim of this study was to explore the therapeutic effects and potential mechanisms of silibinin on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated inflammatory responses in acute lung injury (ALI). Male BALB/c mice were conditioned with silibinin 1 h after intranasal instillation of LPS. After 12 h, the myeloperoxidase (MPO) level in lung tissues, the wet/dry (W/D) ratio, inflammatory cytokines in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), and histopathological examination of lung were detected. Our results showed that silibinin inhibited LPS-induced histopathological changes and MPO activity, as well as the wet/dry (W/D) ratio in the lung tissues. Furthermore, silibinin significantly inhibited LPS-induced inflammatory cytokines production in the BALF. In addition, silibinin suppressed LPS-induced NF-κB activation and the expression of NLRP3 inflammasome. These results indicate that silibinin exerts its anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting NF-κB and NLRP3 signaling pathways.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether emodin exerts protective effects on mouse with allergic asthma. METHODS: A mouse model of allergic airway inflflammation was employed. The C57BL/6 mice sensitized and challenged with ovalbumin (OVA) were intraperitoneally administered 10 or 20 mg/kg emodin for 3 days during OVA challenge. Animals were sacrificed 48 h after the last challenge. Inflammatory cell count in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) was measured. The levels of interleukin (IL)-4, IL-5, IL-13 and eotaxin in BALF and level of immunoglobulin E (IgE) in serum were measured with enzyme-linked immuno sorbent assay kits. The mRNA expressions of IL-4, IL-5, heme oxygenase (HO)-1 and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) were determined by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: Emodin induced significant suppression of the number of OVA-induced total inflammatory cells in BALF. Treatment with emodin led to significant decreases in the levels of IL-4, IL-5, IL-13 and eotaxin in BALF and total IgE level in serum. Histological examination of lung tissue revealed marked attenuation of allergen-induced lung eosinophilic inflammation. Additionally, emodin suppressed IL-4, IL-5 and MMP-9 mRNA expressions and induced HO-1 mRNA expression. CONCLUSION: Emodin exhibits anti-inflammatory activity in the airway inflammation mouse model, supporting its therapeutic potential for the treatment of allergic bronchial asthma.

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To explore the impact and mechanism of electro-acupuncture (EA) on olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) transplantation of spinal cord injury (SCI) axonal regeneration.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>In the experiment, 72 adult Sprague Dawley male rats weighted (220±20) g underwent contusion and transection method to cause the T9 model of spinal cord injury, were randomly divided into four groups involving model group, EA group,OECs group,and EA+OECs group. 5% fluorescein gold (FG) solution of 0.5 µl was injected into rats' spinal cord at 4 weeks and 8 weeks after SCI, a series of tests were performed including fluorescein gold(FG) retrograde tagging, BBB scores.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>(1)The BBB scores level among four groups had no differences from the 1st day to the 1st week after the SCI (P>0.05). From the 3rd week after the SCI, the BBB scores level in EA+ OECs group were obviously higher than that of other groups (P<0.05). (2)The result of the fluorescein gold (FG) retrograde tagging showed at 4 weeks and 8 weeks after treatment FG positive nerve fibers were observed in SCI region. In EA+OECs group the number of FG positive nerve fibers was more than other three groups, and the fibers were more regularly arranged than other three groups.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>The combination of electro-acupuncture and OECs transplantation can recover the pathway of nerve conduction and promote nerve fibers regeneration and hind limb function recovery for SCI rat, and can guide the trend of the axonal regeneration.</p>

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To analysis the differential expression of decidua tissue proteins and effective mechanisms of recurrent abortion mice with Shoutai Wan, and explore the mechanism of Shoutai Wan in preventing miscarriage.</p><p><b>METHOD</b>The abortion-prone CBA/J x DBA/2 matings were established as the model of recurrent abortion and the nonabortion-prone CBA/J x BALB/c matings were used as the model of normal pregnancy. The model of recurrent abortion CBA/J x DBA/2 of mice pregnant were randomly divided into four groups according to the sequence of pregnancy, including model group, Shoutai Wan low-dose group, Shoutai Wan middle-dose group and Shoutai Wan high-dose group. From the 1st day of pregnant, mice of normal group, model group, Shoutai Wan low-dose group (3 g x kg x d(-1)), Shoutai Wan middle-dose group (6 g x kg x d(-1)) and Shoutai Wan high-dose group (12 g x kg x d(-1)) are oral administration in different doses. On the 14th day of pregnancy, all mice are killed and the embryo loss rate (ELR) was counted. The expression of differential proteins of mice decidua tissues were separated by means of 2-DE and identified by MALDI-TOF-MS. The functions of identified proteins were further analysed according to bioinformatics resources.</p><p><b>RESULT</b>Compared with model group, low-dose Shoutai Wan can not significantly improve the model of recurrent abortion in pregnant mice ELR; Shoutai Wan middle-dose and high-dose group of pregnant mice ELR were significantly decreased (P < 0.01). The results showed that the well-resolved, reproducible 2-DE patterns of mice decidua tissues of model group, normal group and Shoutai Wan low middle high-dose group were obtained. Through comparative proteome analysis of decidua tissues of all groups, 30 differential expression protein spots which maybe related to recurrent abortion and Shoutai Wan intervention were identified by MALDI-TOF-MS. These differential expression proteins mainly refer to invasion of the blastocyst, blood vessel remodeling and cell apoptosis.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Shoutai Wan can decrease recurrent abortion mice ELR significantly, and play a role in preventing miscarriage. Recurrent abortion is a complicated process refer to diverse proteins participate. For several protein spots expression of decidua tissues in recurrent abortion mice was regulated by Shoutai Wan, it provides contribution to the effect characteristic of multitarget.</p>

RESUMO

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To study the effect of qingxin kaiqiao formula and saponin on the learning and memory ability and the expression of the apoptosis signal transducers Abeta and betaAPP in AD rat brain.</p><p><b>METHOD</b>The comparative observation method was adopted for the animal test. Forty male SD rats were randomly divided into five groups, namely the normal group, the model group, the aricept group, the qingxin kaiqiao formula group and the saponin group, with eight rats in each group. Abeta(25-35) (10 g x L(-1)) was injected into their bilateral amygdala to establish the AD rat model. Since the next day, they were intragastrically administered with Aricept (1.67 mg x kg(-1)), Qingxin Kaiqiao decoction (12.67 mL x kg(-1)), saponin (6.30 mg x kg(-1)) and double distilled water filling for 2 weeks to observe their spatial memory ability in a Morris water maze and study the expression of Caspase-3, Abeta and betaAPP in brain tissues by immunohistochemistry.</p><p><b>RESULT</b>Each traditional Chinese medicine groups showed significant improvement in the learning and memory ability of AD rats and notable differences (P < 0.05, P < 0.01) compared with the control group. The qingxin kaiqiao formula group and the saponin group showed a decrease in the expressions of Caspase-3, Abeta and betaAPP in cerebral cortex and hippocampus area, displaying notable differences (P < 0.01, P < 0.05) compared with the control group.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>qingxin kaiqiao formula and saponin can obviously improve the learning and memory ability of AD rats with by decreasing the expression of Caspase-3, Abeta and betaAPP in cortex and hippocampus.</p>

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To study the effects of Qingxin Kaiqiao Recipe (QKR) saponin on the expressions of Bax, Bcl-2, beta-amyloid (Abeta), and beta-amyloid precursor protein (betaAPP) in the cortex and hippocampus of Alzheimer's disease (AD) rats.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Thirty-two SD rats of SPF grade were selected. Abeta 25 - 35 was injected into the bilateral amygdala to prepare the AD model. After modeling rats were randomly divided into the model group, the donepezil hydrochloride group (Donepezil Hydrochloride Tablet, 1.67 mg/kg), the QLR group (QLR Decoction, 12.67 mL/kg), and the saponin group (saponin, 6.30 mg/kg), 8 rats in each group. Another 8 rats were selected as the normal group. Rats in the normal group and the model group were given with equal volume of double distilled water by gastrogavage. The intervention was performed once daily for 2 successive weeks. The Morris water maze test was carried out by the end of medication. The escape latency and the platform crossing times were recorded during the 1 -5 days. The expressions of Bax, Bcl-2, Abeta, and betaAPP in the cortex and hippocampus were detected using immunohistochemical assay.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Compared with the model group, the 3rd - 5th day escape latency were all shortened in each medication group. The expressions of Bax, Abeta, and betaAPP decreased in the cortex and hippocampus. The numbers of platform crossing increased. The expression of Bcl-2 in the cortex increased. The expression of Bcl-2 in the hippocampus increased in the donepezil hydrochloride group and the QLR group with statistical difference (P<0.01, P<0.05). Compared with the donepezil hydrochloride group, the expression of betaAPP increased in the cortex and hippocampus of the saponin group. The expression of Abeta in the cortex and hippocampus decreased, the expression of Bax in the hippocampus decreased, and the expression of Bcl-2 in the cortex increased in the QLR group. The escape latency was obviously postponed at day 3 -5, the platform crossing times decreased, the expression of Bcl-2 in the cortex and hippocampus decreased in the saponin group, showing statistical difference (P<0.05, P<0.01).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>QKR could significantly improve AD rats' learning, memory, and spatial capabilities, which might be achieved through decreasing the expressions of Bax, Abeta, and betaAPP in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus, and elevating the expression of Bcl-2.</p>

RESUMO

Recently, the number of cancer patients using complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) hasu been increasing world wide. Many hospitals in China have been using integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine (ITCWM, the use of both western and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) together) for treatment or prevention of cancer, and considerable progress has been made. The present study investigated and systematically reviewed previous randomized controlled trials (RCTs) conducted to verify the effects of ITCWM on cancer in China, from a database of Chinese literature. Papers published in Chinese scientific journals were searched using the database provided by the National Science and Technology Library (NSTL, http://www.nstl.gov.cn), China. On the basis of a limited search strategy, 14 reports of RCTs were identified and reviewed. Almost all of these RCTs reported better results with the use of ITCWM than with western medicine alone. In order to promote evidence-based complementary and alternative medicine (EBCAM) in Japan, it will be necessary to collect and evaluate the scientific content of many clinical studies of CAM performed in China and other countries to establish a database. In the future, there will be a need to develop and establish methods such as meta-analysis for scientific evaluation of CAM.<br>
