Global antimicrobial resistance has led to a ban on the use of antibiotics as growth promoters (AGPs) in poultry farming, encouraging the use of natural phytogenic feed additives that provide similar effects to AGPs without causing resistance. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of the addition of encapsulated fennel seed (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) essential oil (FEO) into the diets on the performance, intestinal microflora, morphology, and transcriptomic profiling of broiler chickens. In the study, 400 one-d-old male chicks of the Ross-308 genotype were randomly distributed into five groups, each with 16 replicates of five birds. The experiment included a control group fed on basal diets without the addition of FEO and treatment groups supplemented with 50 (FEO50), 100 (FEO100), 200 (FEO200), or 400 (FEO400) mg of encapsulated FEO/kg. Body weight and the European Production Efficiency Factor values were higher in the FEO100, FEO200, and FEO400 groups (P < 0.05). The feed conversion ratio significantly improved at all FEO levels (P < 0.05). FEO supplementation improved duodenum, jejunum, and ileum morphologies. It enhanced mucosal layer thickness in the duodenum and jejunum, and muscular layer thickness in the jejunum and ileum (P < 0.05). It also increased the number of Lactobacillus spp. in the jejunum and ileum (P < 0.05). According to the transcriptome profile obtained from the microarray analysis of samples taken from small intestine tissues, the mRNA expression levels of 261 genes in the FEO50 group (206 upregulated and 55 downregulated), 302 genes in the FEO100 group (218 upregulated and 84 downregulated), 292 genes in the FEO200 group (231 upregulated and 61 downregulated), and 348 genes in the FEO400 group (268 upregulated and 80 downregulated) changed compared to the control group. Most upregulated genes were associated with catalytic activity, binding, transcription regulators and transcription factors, anatomical structure and cellular development, and protein binding activity modulators. The downregulated genes mostly belonged to the transporter, carrier, and protein-modifying enzyme classes. Besides, the anti-inflammatory IL-10 gene (4.41-fold) increased significantly in the FEO100 group compared to the control group (P < 0.05). In conclusion, FEO improved the performance of broiler chickens by regulating biological processes such as performance and intestinal health, with the 100 mg FEO/kg supplementation being the most prominent.


The long-term use of low-level antibiotics in the poultry industry to promote growth, rather than for treatment, has led to the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a significant risk to human and animal health. This concern has led to a ban on antibiotics as growth promoters (AGPs) in broiler diets, resulting in an increase in metabolic diseases in broiler chickens. Phytogenic feed additives have been tested as alternatives to compensate for the loss of AGPs. One such additive, fennel seed essential oil (FEO), known for its strong antimicrobial properties, was examined in this study for its impact on broiler growth performance and the underlying genetic and molecular mechanisms. The results showed that FEO enhanced feed conversion efficiency, thereby improving broiler performance. It positively affected the intestinal wall structure and function and helped establish a balanced microbiota by suppressing harmful and supporting beneficial microorganisms. Transcriptome datasets revealed that FEO modulated gene expression related to economically important traits such as performance and intestinal health. In conclusion, considering the urgent need for antibiotic-free production systems owing to escalating AMR and the growing interest in genotype-specific feeding in the postgenomic era, FEO may be a promising, natural, safe, and effective alternative to AGPs.

Diabetes is a serious pathology that affects a significant number of people worldwide. Its progression is rapid and leads to serious complications if glycemic control is missing. The micro and macrovascular complications of diabetes produce disabilities over time that affect the daily lives of patients. The major challenge of diabetes therapy is to reach a stable glycemic state and to delay the onset of specific complications. Aromatherapy is considered an alternative or complementary therapy, but in recent years, there has been a tendency to overuse essential oils. The present study was designed to evaluate and compare the effects produced by the topical and oral administration of fennel essential oil to diabetic rats. Eighteen compounds in fennel essential oil were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. The major compounds were trans-anethole (64.6%) and fenchone (24.5%). The in vivo study revealed that after a four-week treatment with fennel essential oil, the rats' glycemic levels were significantly reduced (p ≤ 0.05). Furthermore, there were no differences between the two routes of administration. In addition, an ex vivo study underlined the potential effect of this essential oil in the prevention of cataract formation.

MicroRNAs could be promising biomarkers for various diseases, and small RNA drugs have already been FDA approved for clinical use. This area of research is rapidly expanding and has significant potential for the future. Fennel (Anethum foeniculum) is a highly esteemed spice plant with economic and medicinal benefits, making it an invaluable asset in the pharmaceutical industry. To characterize the fennel miRNAs and their Arabidopsis thaliana and Homo sapience targets with functional enrichment analysis and human disease association. A homology-based computational approach characterized the MiRnome of the Anethum foeniculum genome and assessed its impact on Arabidopsis thaliana and Homo sapience transcriptomes. In addition, functional enrichment analysis was evaluated for both species' targets. Moreover, PPI network analysis, hub gene identification, and MD simulation analysis of the top hub node with fennel miRNA were incorporated. We have identified 100 miRNAs of fennel and their target genes, which include 2536 genes in Homo sapiens and 1314 genes in Arabidopsis thaliana. Functional enrichment analysis reveals 56 Arabidopsis thaliana targets of fennel miRNAs showed involvement in metabolic pathways. Highly enriched human KEGG pathways were associated with several diseases, especially cancer. The protein-protein interaction network of human targets determined the top ten nodes; from them, seven hub nodes, namely MAPK1, PIK3R1, STAT3, EGFR, KRAS, CDC42, and SMAD4, have shown their involvement in the pancreatic cancer pathway. Based on the Blast algorithm, 21 fennel miRNAs are homologs to 16 human miRNAs were predicted; from them, the CSPP1 target was a common target for afo-miR11117a-3p and has-miR-6880-5p homologs miRNAs. Our results are the first to report the 100 fennel miRNAs, and predictions for their endogenous and human target genes provide a basis for further understanding of Anethum foeniculum miRNAs and the biological processes and diseases with which they are associated.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of fennel seed powder (FSP) at varying levels on intake, growth, gut health, body condition, body measurements and economics in post weaned male goats. For this experiment a total of 30 post weaned male kids of Barbari goats with statistically similar body weight (P = 0.575) and age (3-4 months) were randomly distributed in three comparable groups each having 10 kids. Three groups viz. control (no supplementation), T1 (0.5% of DM in diet) and T2 (1.0% of DM in diet) were formed and the study continued up to 5 months. Statistical analysis of results showed significant effect of FSP supplementation on intake, growth, body condition, and gut health and body measurements in goats of treatment groups. Significantly highest body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG) and dry matter intake (DMI) (P < 0.001) was reported in T2 group, followed by T1 than control group goats. Further, feed conversion ratio (FCR), feed conversion efficiency (FCE%) and body condition score of treatment groups (T1 and T2) was improved significantly (P < 0.001) than control group goats. However, FCR and FCE% in T1 and T2 differed non- significantly (P > 0.05). Analysis of fecal samples indicated significantly higher (P < 0.001) fecal dry matter (FDM%), fecal consistency score (FS) in T1 and T2 group than control group whereas parasitic fecal egg count per gram (EPG) was significantly lower in T1 and T2 group than control group. However, EPG in T1 and T2 differed non- significantly (P > 0.05). Body measures differed significantly (P < 0.05) among groups. Economic evaluation of FSP supplemented showed that T1 and T2 group fetched INR 462 and 501 per goat on selling over control group (1USD = 82.54 INR). It can be concluded from this study that supplementation of FSP @ 1.0% of DM in diet may economically improve intake, growth, gut health, body condition, body measurements and economics in post weaned male Barbari goats.

Background: Using natural oral supplements is one of the methods of complementary medicine that has been widely welcomed in the last decade Since studies have reported contradictory results for effectiveness of herbal medicines during menopause and no other more effective herbal medicine has been suggested yet, the researchers of this study decided to compare the fennel and Evening Primrose Oil (EPO) and their effect on menopause problems and sex hormones. Materials and Methods: The present study was a triple-blinded, controlled clinical trial with 125 participants randomly assigned to. An intervention group received fennel, another intervention group received evening primrose oil, and the placebo group received placebo twice daily for 8 weeks. Pre-intervention and post-intervention results were obtained using hormonal assay and the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS). Results: In this study, the mean follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and estradiol levels changed significantly in the fennel and EPO groups compared to placebo (p < 0.001). The difference in the mean FSH score between the fennel group and EPO group was not significant (p = 0.304), but the difference in the mean estradiol level between these groups was significant (p = 0.043). Moreover, there was a significant difference in the mean MRS score between the intervention groups before the intervention (p < 0.05). However, the difference in the mean MRS score between the fennel and EPO groups was not significant after the intervention (p = 0.322). Conclusions: Consumption of fennel and EPO can significantly change FSH, estradiol, and psychological menopausal symptoms in postmenopausal women.

The objective of this study was to examine the direct effects of the medicinal plant fennel on basic functions of ovarian cells, including proliferation, apoptosis, and release of progesterone and insulin-like growth factor I (IGFI), as well as to prevent the influence of the environmental contaminant benzene on these cells. Porcine ovarian granulosa cells were cultured with or without fennel extract alone or in combination with benzene. The expression of the proliferation marker PCNA and the apoptosis marker bax was analyzed by quantitative immunocytochemistry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Fennel was able to promote proliferation and IGF-I release, but to suppress apoptosis and progesterone release. Benzene promoted the accumulation of both the proliferation and apoptosis markers, as well as IGF-I release, but it inhibited progesterone secretion. The presence of fennel did not prevent the effects of benzene on any of the measured parameters, while benzene prevented the effects of fennel on cell proliferation, apoptosis, and IGF-I but not progesterone output. These observations demonstrate the direct influence of fennel and benzene on basic ovarian cell functions. Furthermore, they show the inability of fennel to prevent the effects of benzene on these cells. On the other hand, the environmental contaminant benzene can block the response of ovarian cells to the medicinal plant fennel.

Objective: There are few evaluation about the effects of Fennel and Ferula on human polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The goals of this study were to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of two medicinal plants of the Apiaceae family (Fennel and Ferula) in management of PCOS. Materials and Methods: The sample size was 47 participants with PCOS who were randomly divided into 3 groups. The Ferula assa-foetida L group received 100 mg of Ferula (n=14), the Foeniculum vulgare group received 46 mg of Fennel (n=15), and the placebo group received placebo twice daily for 3 months (n=14). Results: Before the intervention, there were no significant differences between groups in terms of clinical parameters, endometrial thickness, or ovarian volume. After the interventions, the number of ovarian follicles was decreased in the Ferula and Fennel groups as compared to the placebo group (p<0.05). The number of ovarian follicles in both ovaries in the Ferula and Fennel group decreased and this decrease was significant in the right side as compared to placebo group. Our findings showed significant changes in dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DEHAS) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels after the intervention (p<0.03) between the Ferula and Placebo groups. Conclusion: Since use of Ferula could make significant changes in TSH and DEHAS levels and decrease the number of right and left ovarian follicles compared to Fennel and placebo, it can be concluded that this herbal medicine is more effective than Fennel in managing PCOS.

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer is one of the important factors of cancer-related deaths. Considering the drug resistance, special attention has been paid to natural compounds. This study aimed at evaluating the anti-metastatic activity of fennel in a breast cancer mouse model. METHODS: A total of 35 adult female BALB/C mice were used in this study. Breast cancer was induced by subcutaneous injection of 4T1 cells in the right lower flank. The mice received fennel extracts daily via intraperitoneal injection for two weeks. Meanwhile, tumor volume was measured every day using calipers. After two weeks, each animal was anesthetized. The protein expression of HSP 70 & 90 was measured in liver tissue and ovary. The expression of her2 was measured in tumor tissue. The activity of Glutathione peroxidase and reductase as anti-oxidant agents were measured in serum. RESULTS: Tumor size significantly decreased after nine days' treatment of the fennel. The expression of HER2 increased in the tumor tissue and decrease with different dose of fennel. Fennel treatment caused a decrease in the protein expression of HSP 70 & 90 in the liver tissues. CONCLUSION: Based on our findings, fennel has anti-tumor and anti-metastatic activities against aggressive cancers.

Sea fennel (Crithmum maritimum L.) is a wild-growing halophyte used in cuisine, traditional medicine or cosmetic products for its beneficial nutritive value and pleasant sensory characteristics. This study aimed to investigate sea fennel essential oils (EOs) from different parts of the plant (flowers, leaves and stems) and the corresponding hydrodistillation by-products (residual water) to validate their potential use and application in different industries. EOs were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS), while the phenolic profile of the residual water was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and spectrophotometric methods. The EO analysis confirmed the presence of 14 compounds, dominated by sabinene (from 42.55 to 51.47%) and limonene (from 36.28 to 43.58%), while among the 12 detected phenolics, chlorogenic acid and its isomers (cryptochlorogenic and neochlorogenic acid) were found in the highest concentrations. Total phenolic, flavonoid and tannin contents were concentrated in the order flowers > leaves > stems. Although the sea fennel samples showed differences in chemical profiles, overall they were rich in bioactive compounds with relatively high amounts of key compounds with already proved good biological properties, especially in waste-water, indicating great potential for re-use in accordance with green processing technology trends.

PURPOSE: Infantile colic (IC) or fussing and crying behavior of unknown cause, affects up to 20% of the infant population and is one of the major reasons for parents to seek medical advice. Therapeutic options are limited and the key component for IC management is parental support. Fennel-based herbal treatments were shown to significantly reduce crying time. The current study was designed to evaluate the parent perception of effectiveness of a fennel-based commercially-available herbal treatment for IC (BabyCalm, Hisunit Ltd., Israel) using a retrospective online survey. DESIGN AND METHODS: This was a real-world observational, case-control retrospective study. Parents of babies with IC symptoms, who either used the herbal product for their baby or did not use any product were invited to participate in an online survey during August-December 2019. The primary outcome was the perceived level of treatment success and symptom improvement. RESULTS: 1218 parents of IC babies (48% females, 90% up to 3 months of age, 58% exclusively breast-fed) responded to the survey of whom 771 used the treatment. Significantly fewer IC-related symptoms were reported by parents who used the product compared to those that did not. Parents perceived the treatment as successful in 65% of the cases, reporting meaningful improvements within 30 min for 69%-79% of the symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: The majority of parents perceived the herbal treatment as effective in rapid symptom reduction suggesting that this may provide a satisfactory solution for IC in the community.

In the perennial medicinal plant fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), persistence over years, production stability, and successful post-drought recovery are as important as plant productivity. Characterization of productivity, post-drought recovery, persistency and their association with phytochemical properties has not yet been performed in fennel. In this study, 64 fennel genotypes (from 23 different countries) from four subspecies/varieties including F. vulgare ssp. piperitum, F. vulgare var. vulgare and F. vulgare var. dulce and F. vulgare var. azoricum were evaluated in the field over four years (2015-2018), then was assessed for post-drought recovery over the next two years (2019-2020). High genotypic variation was observed among genotypes and subspecies. Based on the GC-MS analysis, trans-anethole (22.4-90.6%), estragole (2.1-25.8%), fenchone (4.9-19.8%), and limonene (0.5-11.9%) are major components in the essential oils of the studied germplasm. The highest persistence and the lowest average post-drought recovery belonged to ssp. piperitum. This subspecies also had the highest amount of limonene, fenchone, and estragole and the lowest amount of trans-anethole compared to other subspecies. The highest essential oil content and stability was observed in var. dulce. Seed yield and persistence were found to be negatively associated, suggesting that selection for more productivity may indirectly promote less persistent genotypes. Post-drought recovery was negatively associated with two main phytochemical compounds of essential oil, fenchone and estragole, but positively associated with trans-anethole. Persistence had negative correlation with estragole content. Results indicated that indirect selection for post-drought recovery and persistence may be possible through selection for phytochemical properties. The negative correlation between some essential oil components may indicate that some are isomers, which can limit the ability to select for certain combinations. Superior genotypes identified in this study can be used to construct populations for future studies and as parents of crosses to develop new varieties.

The pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries benefit greatly from recycling and transforming non-utilized parts of medicinal plants from agro-industrial operations into value added products. Hence, the aim of this work was to study the potential nutraceutical and pharmaceutical applications of Bunium ferulaceum Sm. aerial parts, in order to maximize their value. The phenolic profile of their hydromethanolic extract was determined and its antioxidant activity was evaluated in vitro and in vivo alongside with its anti-inflammatory activity and safety profile. The extract exerted an in vitro antioxidant activity mainly through radical scavenging (DPPH IC50: 14.0 ± 0.3 µg/ml) and iron chelating ability (24 ± 2 µg/ml), while, in vivo, the extract did not cause any mortality or visible signs of acute toxicity at high dose (2000 mg/kg body weight). The supplementation of the extract at different doses improved mice liver redox state by increasing catalase and reduced glutathione levels and reducing lipid peroxidation, without causing any toxicity. Moreover, the extract efficiently inhibited xylene induced ear inflammation (62 %). These different bioactivities were linked to the phenolic compounds present in the extract, particularly, chlorogenic acid (78 ± 6 mg/g extract), rutin (44 ± 2 mg/g extract) and hesperidin (56 ± 9 mg/g extract). However, further studies should be carried out on the isolated major compounds found in the extract to correlate the activity with these compounds or their mixture. The wasted aerial parts of Bunium ferulaceum Sm. proved to be a valuable source of polyphenols and exhibited interesting health promoting effects with no toxicity. Thus, Bunium ferulaceum Sm. aerial parts can be included in nutraceutical formulations or used as functional food and the extracted compounds may be used as an alternative food preservative.

INTRODUCCIÓN: el Foeniculum vulgare es una planta medicinal de gran importancia por sus propiedades y valor nutricional. Los extractos del hinojo poseen propiedades terapéuticas ante cambios endocrinos, perturbaciones psicológicas, malestares y sintomatología presente en el ciclo vital de la mujer. OBJETIVOS: analizar información sobre las diferentes propiedades y efectos terapéuticos del F. vulgare en las distintas etapas del ciclo vital de la mujer. METODOLOGÍA: se realizó una búsqueda crítica y analítica del tema por medio de lenguaje controlado recopilado del MeSH y DeCs en metabuscadores científicos. RESULTADOS: el desarrollo de esta revisión fue viable debido a la variedad de literatura, estudios y ensayos clínicos internacionales de libre acceso de información relevante al tema. CONCLUSIÓN: esta planta puede ser empleada como tratamiento, prevención y como fuente de nutrientes; y sus extractos tienen un efecto importante en el ciclo vital de la mujer dependiendo se encuentre en menstruación, menopausia o postmenopausia.


INTRODUCTION: foeniculum vulgare is a medicinal plant of great importance for its properties and nutritional value.Fennel extracts possess therapeutic properties against endocrine changes, psychological disturbances, discomfort and symptomatology present in the vital cycle of women. OBJECTIVES: analyze information on the different properties and therapeutic effects of F. vulgare in the different stages of the life cycle of women. METHODOLOGY: a critical and analytical search of the topic was performed ,by means of controlled language compiled from MeSH and DeCs in scientific meta-search engines. RESULTS: the development of this review was feasible due to the variety of freely available international literature, studies and clinical trials of information relevant to the topic. CONCLUSIÓN: this plant can be used as a treatment, prevention and as a source of nutrients; and its extracts have an important effect on the vital cycle of the woman depending on whether she is in menstruation, menopause or postmenopause.

Increasing evidence has shown that a major periodontal pathobiont, Porphyromonas gingivalis, triggers oral dysbiosis leading to deterioration not only of periodontal health, but also of several systemic conditions. In the present study we identified remarkable anti-P. gingivalis activity of Foeniculum vulgare (fennel), an herbal plant used in Asian cuisine as well as in traditional medicine, by screening of 92 extracts prepared from 23 edible plants. The n-hexane-extracted fennel (HEF) showed a rapid lethal action toward P. gingivalis, while it was rather ineffective with a wide range of other oral commensal bacterial species. Morphological analysis using both high-speed atomic force microscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy revealed that a low concentration of HEF (8 µg/mL) resulted in formation of protruding nanostructures composed of outer membrane vesicle (OMV)-like particles, while a high concentration of HEF (64 µg/mL) induced bacteriolysis with overproduction of OMVs with unusual surface properties. Interestingly, HEF treatment resulted in deprivation of two outer membrane transporter proteins, RagA and RagB, which is essential for nutrient acquisition in P. gingivalis, by extracellularly releasing RagA/RagB-enriched OMVs. Furthermore, HEF showed gingipain-inhibitory activity toward both arginine-specific (Rgps) and lysine-specific (Kgp) gingipains, resulting in blocking oral epithelial cell rounding and the subsequent detachment from culture dishes. Finally, we isolated petroselinic acid as a major bactericide as well as a gingipain inhibitor through a bioassay-guided fractionation of HEF. Taken together, our findings suggest clinical applicability of HEF and petroselinic acid for periodontitis therapy to eliminate P. gingivalis and its major virulence factors on the basis of the dual anti-P. gingivalis activity, i.e., rapid bacteriolysis and gingipain inhibition.

(1) Background: The control of mosquitoes with essential oils is a growing demand. (2) Methods: This study evaluated the novel larvicidal and adulticidal activity of fennel and green tea oils and their nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC) against Culex pipiens (C. pipiens) in the laboratory, field conditions and evaluated their effect against non-target organisms. SLN type II nanoformulations were synthesized and characterized using dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential and transmission electron microscope. (3) Results: The synthesized NLCs showed spherical shaped, homogenous, narrow, and monomodal particle size distribution. The mortality percent (MO%) post-treatment (PT) with 2000 ppm for 24 h with fennel oil and NLC fennel (NLC-F) reached 85% (LC50 = 643.81 ppm) and 100% (LC50 = 251.71), whereas MO% for green tea oil and NLC green tea (NLC-GT) were 80% (LC50 = 746.52 ppm) and 100% (LC50 = 278.63 ppm), respectively. Field trial data showed that the larval reduction percent of fennel oil and NLC-F reached 89.8% and 97.4%, 24 h PT and the reduction percent of green tea oil and NLC-GT reached 89% and 93%, 24 h PT with persistence reached 8 and 7 days, for NLC-F and NLC-GT, respectively. The adulticidal effects showed that NLC-F and NLC-GT (100% mortality) were more effective than fennel and green tea oils (90.0% and 83.33%), with 24 h PT, respectively. Moreover, their reduction of adult density after spraying with LC95 X2 for 15 min, with fennel oil, NLC-F, and green tea oil, NLC-GT were 83.6%, 100%, 79.1%, and 100%, respectively, with persistence (>50%) lasting for three days. The predation rate of the mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis, and the bug, Sphaerodema urinator, was not affected in both oil and its NLC, while the predation rate of the beetle, Cybister tripunctatus increased (66% and 68.3%) by green tea oil and NLC-GT, respectively. (4) Conclusions: NLCs nanoformulation encapsulated essential oils was prepared successfully with unique properties of size, morphology, and stability. In vitro larvicidal and adulticidal effects against C. pipiens supported with field evaluations have been performed using essential oils and their nanoformulations. The biological evaluation of nanoformulations manifested potential results toward both larvicidal and adulticidal compared to the essential oils themselves, especially NLC encapsulated fennel oil which had promising larvicidal and adulticidal activity.

Crithmum maritimum L., or sea fennel, is an edible halophyte plant, rich in phenolic compounds with antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, that naturally grows in Mediterranean coasts. This study aims to incorporate bioactive compounds extracted from lyophilized Crithmum maritimum to sunflower oil assisted by ultrasounds (UAE), to improve its biological value and oxidative stability. UAE conditions were optimized as a function of time (5-20 min) and lyophilized plant concentration (5-20% m/v). The experiments were dictated by a central composite rotatable matrix. Oxidation products were not influenced by UAE conditions. Acidity, chlorophyll, and carotenoid contents were affected by both factors, while total phenols, flavonoids, and antioxidant activity (FRAP method) only increased with plant concentration. Response surfaces were fitted to these experimental results. Flavonoids were highly related with oil antioxidant activity. No sensory defects were detected in supplemented oil (12.5% m/v plant/5 min UAE). The oxidative stability of this oil was evaluated at 60 °C/12 days. Chlorophylls, phenols, radical scavenging (DPPH), and antioxidant activities decreased over time but were always higher than the values in non-supplemented oil (8.6 and 7-fold with FRAP and DPPH, respectively). C. maritimum presented high amounts of bioactive compounds with antioxidant activity, adequate for sunflower oil supplementation by UAE.

A sea fennel (Crithmum maritimum) aqueous extract was prepared and loaded into soybean phosphatidylcholine liposomes. Both the free extract (FE), and the empty (L) and loaded (L-FE) liposomes were shown to be non-cytotoxic to THP-1 and Caco-2 cells. The anti-inflammatory effect was tested on THP-1 cells differentiated into macrophages. FE showed anti-inflammatory activity, revealed by the induced secretion of IL-10 cytokines in macrophages that were subsequently stimulated with LPS. Also, a decrease in TNF-α production by L was observed, evidencing that liposomes reduced the pro-inflammatory mediators' secretion. The liposomes (L) showed protective anti-inflammatory activity and also were able to downregulate the inflammation. Furthermore, L-FE were also found to downregulate the inflammation response, as they were able to decrease TNF-α secretion in macrophages previously exposed to LPS. The simulated in vitro gastrointestinal digestion (GID) of FE diminished the chlorogenic acid content (the main polyphenolic compound of the extract) by 40%, while in L-FE, the amount of this phenolic compound increased with respect to the undigested liposomes. The amount of bioaccessible chlorogenic, however, was similar for FE and L-FE. The percentage of chlorogenic acid absorbed through a Caco-2 cell monolayer after 3 h of incubation, was significantly similar for the extract and the liposomes (~1.5%), without finding significant differences once the extract and liposomes were digested.

Doubled haploidy technology is a powerful tool to accelerate the breeding of new crop varieties. Protocols are not universal, as even species within the same family require a specific process. Here we describe methods for developing doubled haploids for fennel and dill, both Apiaceae species which are used for food, flavorings, and medicine.

BACKGROUND: One of the most common complaints for women is dysmenorrhea. Several studies investigated the treatment effects of medicinal plants on primary dysmenorrhea. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review and meta-analysis investigates the effect of Foeniculum vulgare (Fennel) on pain in primary dysmenorrhea in comparison to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as mefenamic acid. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, EBSCO Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane library, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Science Direct, ProQuest, ISI Web of Science, Google Scholar, Magiran, SID, Iran Medex, and Irandoc were searched up to January 2019. Quality assessment of clinical trials was conducted using Jadad scoring system. Totally, 12 studies were entered in the meta-analysis. I 2 was calculated to determine heterogeneity. Fixed effects and/or random effects models were applied. RESULTS: Meta-analysis of these trials showed that F. vulgare intake decreased significantly the intensity of dysmenorrhea compared to the placebo (SMD -0.632; CI: -0.827 to -0.436; p<0.001; heterogeneity p=0.807; I 2=0%; fixed effect model; seven articles). However, the effect of Mefenamic acid with F. vulgare was not different from each other (SMD=-0.214; CI: -0.446 to 0.017; p=0.07; heterogeneity p=0.58; I 2=0%; fixed effect model; six trials). CONCLUSION: The F. vulgare alleviates dysmenorrhea. Regarding the same effect of F. vulgare with NSAIDs, it is highly recommend to the women suffered from dysmenorrhea specifically the ones who have high tendency toward herbal medicine.

OBJECTIVE: Menopause symptoms affect the various dimensions of women's lives and they can lead to reduction of their quality of life. Phytoestrogens can be used as an approach to diminish these symptoms. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the effect of phytoestrogens on the treatment of urogenital menopause symptoms. STUDY DESIGN: PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane library,Scopus and ProQuest were systematically searched from 2000-2020. All randomized clinical trials were included. The quality of the selected papers was evaluated by the CONSORT checklist. RESULTS: 33 eligible high-quality papers were reviewed. Various forms of phytoestrogens such as Pueraria Mirifica, fennel, Hop plant(Humuluslupulus L.), Glycine Max (L.) Merr, soy, red clover, black cohosh, ginsing, cimicifugaracemosa, genistein, diadzein, glycitein and isoflavone in the form of oral capsules and pill, food supplement, enriched powder, vaginal gel, cream and suppository could improve menopausal urogenital symptoms. The recovery rate in vaginal use of these phytoestrogens was greater than other consumptions. CONCLUSIONS: After using a variety of phytoestrogens in different forms indicators of urogenital atrophy and urinary disorders improved and women's sexual function improved after treatment. The use of phytoestrogens as a safe, low-risk compared to hormone therapy and almost accessible method for women can relieve urogenital symptoms and promote the sexual satisfaction and quality of life.
