RESUMO

The remarkable properties of garlic A. sativum L. have been described, but little is known about Snow mountain garlic. Understanding general aspects of this garlic composition, including the presence of phenolics, will establish its possible use for health or infer which compounds can contribute to improving it. This study aimed to determine the ash content, lipid profile, and characterization of phenolics in Snow mountain garlic. The organic content was obtained by common techniques (oven drying, calcination, Kjeldahl method, etc.). The quantitative analysis of the ashes was made by Inductively Coupled Plasma Emission Spectrometry. The fatty acid profile was determined by Gas Chromatography. The presence of phenolics was determined by foam, Libermann-Burchard, Dragendorff, Salkowski, ferric chloride, vanillin, catechin, Constantinescu, and Shinoda reactions. The total phenolic content was determined via the Folin-Ciocalteu method, and antioxidant activity was determined using the DPPH radical method. The bromatological analysis showed a 51.1% humidity, and the main organic compounds were carbohydrates (46.7%). Ash analysis showed 287.46 g/kg of potassium. The fatty acid profile showed 75.61% of polyunsaturated fatty acid. Phenolics like saponins, alkaloids, triterpenes, tannins, and flavonoids were present. Antioxidant activity was found by radical DPPH of 25.64 (±0.78) µmol TE/1 g dw. Snow mountain garlic shares a composition similar to those found in other garlic.

A globally increased demand for fuels and environmental concerns regarding fossil sources call for sustainable alternatives. Fast pyrolysis is a promising approach for converting different types of biomass to renewable Fast Pyrolysis Bio-Oil (FPBO) that can be used for heating, power generation and mobility. Side-products emerging from the process include low calorific gases and charcoal. Both are further combusted to generate energy for the process. From the charcoal, the process leaves behind fly ashes (FAs) that contain macro- and micronutrients. In this regard, FPBO-FAs might present valuable soil fertilizers, but also bear the risk of soil heavy metal (HM) contamination. In this study, the risk and potential benefit of FPBO-FAs derived from three different biomass sources (bark, forest residue and Miscanthus sp.) as soil amendments was tested. Twice, in autumn 2017 and 2018, FPBO-FAs were applied to the field (500 kg ash ha-1 y-1) in a grassland experiment. Neither physico-chemical and microbiological soil properties nor plant yield were affected following FPBO-FAs application. Seasonal differences and changes from year to year, however, were evident, both for some soil and plant properties. The lack of effects on (i) plant yield, (ii) soil microbiological and physicochemical properties, (iii) heavy metal concentrations in soil and plant suggest that the product may safely be applied. The fact that these field-trial results are in discordance with previous greenhouse trials suggest, however, that long-term trials would be needed.

The selective phosphorus recovery by wet chemical extraction and precipitation was assessed at the laboratory scale aiming at identifying a simple and replicable procedure that could be effectively applied to different types of sewage sludge ashes. The experimental work was performed on five samples of sewage sludge ashes, of which three were obtained from muffle-furnace incineration and two from full-scale mono-incineration plants. A single-step extraction procedure has been investigated by applying different operating conditions (type of leaching acid, liquid-to-solid ratio, contact time). Experimental results indicated that phosphorus recovery efficiency varied between 54 and 92% with limited co-dissolution of metals and metalloids, except for arsenic. Operating conditions, sewage sludge ashes characteristics and phosphorus removal processes in the wastewater treatment plant were the main factors affecting phosphorus recovery efficiency. The application of optimal operating conditions (0.2 M sulfuric acid, liquid-to-solid ratio of 20 and contact time of 2 h) resulted in phosphorus recovery from 76 to 92% on four samples. Subsequently, precipitation of phosphorus from acidic leachate was carried out by lime dosing. After filtering and drying, the recovered products presented a P2O5 content between 11.5 and 36.7% dry weight, with a fraction of soluble phosphorus between 75 and 91%, a good percentage for application as fertilizer or animal feed. Since few undesired elements (i.e., As, Cu and Zn) exceeded the limits for fertilizer application (exception was represented by Ni and Pb, which were present at low concentration), an additional purification step may be required. Overall, experimental results highlighted the influence of process parameters on phosphorus recovery.

Phosphorus (P) recovery from human urine was evaluated using the addition of MgCl2, sea salt and solid-waste (SW) incinerated ashes. The study objectives were to assess and compare their efficiency for P recovery, costs of chemicals added and relevant crystal characteristics. Results from the experiments conducted between pH range of 7-11 revealed that P precipitation efficiency was increased to 89-97% and 72-88% when MgCl2 and sea salt were added, respectively. Precipitates obtained from both cases were found to contain 10.8-17.1% P dry weight which is superior to commercial fertilizer (8.80% P). Based on SEM-EDS examination and chemical equilibrium thermodynamics, about 83% and 68% of precipitates were in the form of struvite for the addition of MgCl2 and sea salt, respectively. Although 18% less struvite was formed with sea salt added, cost was found to be reduced from 4.07 USD·(kg P)-1 for MgCl2 addition to 2.91 USD·(kg P)-1 using sea salt addition, representing a 28% cost reduction. Furthermore, SW ashes added into the urine increased P recovery efficiency about 6-17%. Addition also lowered the costs to 1.75 and 1.68 USD·(kg P)-1 for SW fly ash and bottom ash, respectively. Thus, ash addition reduced cost and provided an alternative to landfill disposal. However, addition of SW bottom ash might result in recovered P solids with lead concentration exceeding the EC limit for inorganic fertilizer. In summary, results of this study have demonstrated a pragmatic way to recover P from human urine with the use of sea salt and ash as alternative Mg source and seed. Results indicate that this practice not only produces a good-quality fertilizer as struvite for sustainable P management, but also helps protect the water environment, and support circular economy of P in human ecosystem.

Traditional cementation technique is insufficient in making municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ashes meet the permissible leaching threshold. Aluminum supplementation and electrokinetic (EK) activation were combinedly incorporated into the traditional solidification pathway to enhance the geopolymerization and the immobilization of Pb and Cd in MSWI fly ashes in this study. The aluminum addition remarkably affected the geopolymer formation. The minimum toxicity leaching as well as the maximum compressive strength were achieved at the combination of the voltage gradient of 1.0 V/cm, the proposing time of 48 or 72 h, the mass ratio of alkali activator to fly ash of 11.5%, and the modulus of 2.1. Chloride reduction in the mortar obtained during the EK process increased the negative charge relativity of oligomers. The leaching concentrations of Pb and Cd from the geopolymer were successfully predicted by a linear model based on the compressive strengths at 28 d. Higher reaction degree was found in the EK-activated mortar in the geopolymerization kinetics. Aluminum supplementation had induced the production of some amorphous aluminosilicate minerals including Al6Si2O13, CaAl2Si2O8·4H2O, Ca2Al3(Si3O12)OH, Ca2Al(OH)7·3H2O, and Ca4Al2O6Cl2·10H2O during the EK process. Larger particles observed in the EK-treated specimen directly verified the EK-activated pozzolanic reactions.

Brick kiln coal ashes (BKCAs) are one of the major toxic byproducts of the rapidly growing construction industry in developing countries. However, eco-friendly recycling avenues for BKCAs are yet to be explored. The major objectives of the present research were to evaluate the viability of vermitechnology in transforming BKCAs into valuable products, and to examine the metal detoxification potential of Eisenia fetida BKCA-based feedstocks. BKCAs were mixed in large scale with cow dung (CD) in 1:1 and 2:1 ratios, for vermicomposting and aerobic composting; performance was assessed in comparison with CD. Vermiconverted-BKCA was then used as organic fertilizer for rice grown in poorly fertile soil. Acidic nature of BKCA feedstocks was neutralized by 30-86% in the vermireactors. Total N and available P concentrations significantly increased in the vermireactors supplemented with considerable mineralization of total organic C. Exorbitantly high K and S contents were pacified to a normal range after vermicomposting. Greater improvement in microbial biomass, respiration, fungal and bacterial growth was observed under vermicomposting against aerobic composting. Consequently, urease and phosphatase activity increased by 1-4 folds in the BKCA based vermibeds. Bioavailability of toxic metals reduced by 41-74% in the vermicomposted BKCAs. High metal accumulation by the earthworms resulted in substantial reduction of pollution load in the finished product. The field experiment demonstrated that vermiconverted-BKCA could be utilized as potential organic fertilizer for rice production, soil fertility rejuvenation, and metal detoxification. Overall, the study reveals that E. fetida could be used as an efficient contender for sanitization of toxic BKCAs.

Common conventional biological treatment methods fail to decolorize palm oil mill effluent (POME). The present study focused on using the abundant palm oil mill boiler (POMB) ashes for POME decolorization. The POMB ashes were subjected to microwave irradiation and chemical treatment using H2SO4. The resultant adsorbents were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analyses. The adsorption efficiency was evaluated at various pH levels (2-8.5), adsorption dosages (3-15 g) in 200 mL, and contact times (1-5 h). The microwave-irradiated POMB-retained ash recorded the highest color removal of 92.31%, for which the best conditions were pH 2, 15 g adsorbent dosage in 200 mL, and 5 h of contact time. At these best treatment conditions, the color concentration of the treated effluent was analyzed using the method proposed by the American Dye Manufacturers Institute (ADMI). The color concentration was 19.20 ADMI, which complies with the Malaysia discharge standard class A. The Freundlich isotherm model better fit the experimental data and had a high R2 of 0.9740. Based on these results, it can be deduced that microwave-irradiated POMB-retained ash has potential applications for POME decolorization via a biosorption process.

Los hongos micorrícicos arbusculares (HMA) incrementan la toma de fosfatos solubles, mientras que los hongos solubilizadores de fósforo (S) promueven la solubilización de complejos insolubles de fosfato, en conjunto benefician la nutrición de las plantas. La utilización de estos organismos en combinación con minerales o rocas que aportan nutrientes es otra alternativa para mantener la productividad de los cultivos. El objetivo de este trabajo fue combinar HMA y S con materiales piroclásticos (cenizas y pumicitas) del volcán Puyehue y rocas fosfóricas (RP) del Grupo Río Chico (Chubut) y evaluar el desempeno de estas mezclas como sustratos para la producción en maceta de Lactuca sativa. Para formular los sustratos, se utilizó como base una mezcla de Terrafertil® con cenizas. Penicillium thomii fue el S y esporas del hongo Rhizophagus intraradices (AEGIS® Irriga) sirvieron de fuente del HMA. Se evaluaron diversas combinaciones de microorganismos y la adición o no de RP. Los tratamientos fueron: 1) sustrato; 2) sustrato + HMA; 3) sustrato + S; 4) sustrato + HMA + S; 5) sustrato: RP; 6) sustrato: RP + HMA; 7) sustrato: RP + S, y 8) sustrato: RP+ HMA + S. Se efectuaron 3 repeticiones por tratamiento. Los parámetros evaluados fueron el contenido de P total y asimilable en el sustrato, el P en el tejido vegetal y la biomasa seca. Todos ellos fueron significativamente mayores en las plantas que crecieron en el sustrato adicionado con RP e inoculadas con S y HMA. Este trabajo confirma que la combinación S/HMA con cenizas volcánicas del Puyehue y las RP del Grupo Río Chico formuladas con un sustrato comercial promueven el crecimiento de L. sativa. De este modo es posible incrementar el valor agregado de geomateriales de origen nacional.

The chemical characteristics, element contents, mineral compositions, and the ameliorative effects on acid soils of five biomass ashes from different materials were analyzed. The chemical properties of the ashes varied depending on the source biomass material. An increase in the concrete shuttering contents in the biomass materials led to higher alkalinity, and higher Ca and Mg levels in biomass ashes, which made them particularly good at ameliorating effects on soil acidity. However, heavy metal contents, such as Cr, Cu, and Zn in the ashes, were relatively high. The incorporation of all ashes increased soil pH, exchangeable base cations, and available phosphorus, but decreased soil exchangeable acidity. The application of the ashes from biomass materials with a high concrete shuttering content increased the soil available heavy metal contents. Therefore, the biomass ashes from wood and crop residues with low concrete contents were the better acid soil amendments.

Aided phytostabilization using coal fly ashes (CFAs) is an interesting technique to clean-up polluted soils and valorizing industrial wastes. In this context, our work aims to study the effect of two CFAs: silico-aluminous (CFA1) and sulfo-calcic (CFA2) ones, 10 years after their addition, on the phytostabilization of a highly Cd (cadmium), Pb (lead) and Zn (zinc) contaminated agricultural soil, with four forest tree species: Robinia pseudoacacia, Alnus glutinosa, Acer pseudoplatanus and Salix alba. To assess the effect of CFAs on trees, leaf fatty acid composition, malondialdehyde (MDA), oxidized and reduced glutathione contents ratio (GSSG: GSH), 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), Peroxidase (PO) and Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities were examined. Our results showed that CFA amendments decreased the CaCl2-extractable fraction of Cd and Zn from the soil. However, no significant effect was observed on metal trace element (MTE) concentrations in leaves. Fatty acid percentages were only affected by the addition of sulfo-calcic CFA. The most affected species were A. glutinosa and R. pseudoacacia in which C16:0, C18:0 and C18:2 percentages increased significantly whereas the C18:3 decreased. The addition of sulfo-calcic CFA induced the antioxidant systems response in tree leaves. An increase of SOD and POD activities in leaves of trees planted on the CFA2-amended plot was recorded. Conversely, silico-aluminous CFA generated a reduction of lipid and DNA oxidation associated with the absence or low induction of anti-oxidative processes. Our study evidenced oxidative stress alleviation in tree leaves due to CFA amendments. MTE mobility in contaminated soil and their accumulation in leaves differed with the nature of CFA amendments and the selected tree species.

Foram utilizados 504 pintos de linhagem comercial (Ag Ross 308) para frangos de corte de um dia de idade, distribuídos em 12 tratamentos com seis repetições. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi de blocos ao acaso em esquema fatorial 2x2x3, com dois níveis de fósforo disponível (0,45 e 0,34%), dois níveis de fitase (0 e 1200 FTU/kg) e três níveis de proteína bruta (22,5; 20,5 e 18,5%). A porcentagem de cálcio e fósforo nas tíbias foi influenciada significativamente pelos níveis de proteína e de fósforo na dieta com o uso da fitase. Os teores de matéria mineral nas tíbias apresentaram efeito linear com o uso da enzima e efeito quadrático com a ausência dela, apresentando maior valor com o nível de 22,5% de proteína na dieta. Já com os maiores níveis de fósforo houve efeito linear entre os níveis de proteína bruta na dieta e os pesos da matéria mineral nas tíbias, ou seja, quanto maior o nível de proteína, menor o peso da matéria mineral.


504 (five hundred four) 1 day old male chicks from a commercial broiler line (Ag Ross 308) were used, distributed in 12 treatments, with 6 replicates per treatment. The experimental design was casually blocked and treatments were organized in a 2x2x3 factorial arrangement: two available phosphorus levels (0.45 and 0.34%), two phytase inclusion levels (0 and 1200 FTU/kg) and three crude protein levels (22.5; 20.5 and 18.5%). Tibia calcium percentage was influenced by protein and phosphorus levels in the diet, when using phytase. Tibia ash levels showed a linear effect when enzymes were added and showed a quadractic effect without it, and the higher value was observed with 22.5% crude protein in the diet. With higher phosphorus levels a linear effect was observed between crude protein in the diet and tibia ash weights, as a higher protein level had lower tíbia ash weight.
