RATIONALE: Fibromyalgia (FM) is characterized by idiopathic persistent chronic pain in the ligaments or musculoskeletal system, and more than half of the patients with FM might have migraine headaches. Direct musculoskeletal intervention could be a non-pharmacological management to relieve symptoms. However, patients with severe FM often have intense pain from only a soft touch, thereby rendering musculoskeletal intervention challenging. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 47-year-old man had progressing intense pain, and this affected his everyday life. There were no abnormal physical findings on laboratory examination such as levels of complement, antinuclear antibodies, and C-reactive protein, which were within normal limits. Magnetic resonance imaging did not indicate abnormalities. DIAGNOSES, INTERVENTIONS, AND OUTCOMES: The patient satisfied the American College of Rheumatology criteria. Finally, we made a final diagnosis of fibromyalgia. The therapeutic intervention of Kanshoho, the unique muscle relaxation technique with low force, relieved his pain. LESSONS: If Kanshoho is carefully applied in a state of hospitalization under surveillance by an experienced physician, it could be a promising muscle relaxation method. Relaxing the trapezius muscle and reducing its intramuscular pressure might be key in treating patients with severe FM. However, it needs elucidation of its mechanism.

Aging-related sarcopenia exerts harmful impacts on muscle mass, strength, and physical mobility. Protein supplementation has been demonstrated to augment efficacy of resistance training (RT) in elderly. This study compared the relative effects of different protein supplements on muscle mass, strength, and mobility outcomes in middle-aged and older individuals undergoing RT. A comprehensive search of online databases was performed to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examining the efficacy of protein supplement plus RT in untrained community-dwelling adults, hospitalized, or institutionalized residents who suffered acute or chronic health conditions. Network meta-analysis (NMA) was performed using a frequentist method for all analyses. Treatment effects for main outcomes were expressed as standard mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI). We used the surface-under-the cumulative-ranking (SUCRA) scores to rank probabilities of effect estimation among all identified treatments. Meta-regression analyses were performed to identify any relevant moderator of the treatment efficacy and results were expressed as ß with 95% credible interval (CrI). We finally included 78 RCTs (5272 participants) for analyses. Among the six protein sources identified in this NMA, namely whey, milk, casein, meat, soy, and peanut, whey supplement yielded the most effective treatments augmenting efficacy of RT on muscle mass (SMD = 1.29, 95% CI: 0.96, 1.62; SUCRA = 0.86), handgrip strength (SMD = 1.46, 95% CI: 0.92, 2.00; SUCRA = 0.85), and walking speed (SMD = 0.73, 95% CI: 0.39, 1.07; SUCRA = 0.84). Participant's health condition, sex, and supplementation dose were significant factors moderating the treatment efficacy on muscle mass (ß = 0.74; 95% CrI: 0.22, 1.25), handgrip strength (ß = -1.72; 95% CrI: -2.68, -0.77), and leg strength (ß = 0.76; 95% CrI: 0.06, 1.47), respectively. Our findings suggest whey protein yields the optimal supplements to counter sarcopenia in older individuals undergoing RT.

BACKGROUND: Muscle mass is important for metastatic prostate cancer survival and quality of life (QoL). The backbone of treatment for men with metastatic castration sensitive prostate cancer (mCSPC) is androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) with an androgen signaling inhibitor. ADT is an effective cancer treatment, but it facilitates significant declines in muscle mass and adverse health outcomes important to mCSPC survivors, such as fatigue, and reductions in physical function, independence, insulin sensitivity, and QoL. In non-metastatic CSPC survivors, resistance training (RT) preserves muscle mass and improves these related health outcomes, but the biggest barrier to RT in CSPC survivors of all stages is fatigue. Creatine monohydrate supplementation coupled with RT (Cr + RT) may address this barrier since creatine plays a critical role in energy metabolism. Cr + RT in cancer-free older adults and other clinical populations improves muscle mass and related health outcomes. Evidence also suggests that creatine supplementation can complement cancer treatment. Thus, Cr + RT is a strategy that addresses gaps in survivorship needs of people with mCSPC. The purpose of this parallel, double-blind randomized controlled trial is to test the effects of 52-weeks of Cr + RT compared with placebo (PLA) and RT (PLA + RT) on muscle mass, other related health outcomes, and markers of cancer progression. METHODS: We will carry out this trial with our team's established, effective, home-based, telehealth RT program in 200 mCSPC survivors receiving ADT, and evaluate outcomes at baseline, 24-, and 52-weeks. RT will occur twice weekly with elastic resistance bands, and an established creatine supplementation protocol will be used for supplementation delivery. Our approach addresses a major facilitator to RT in mCSPC survivors, a home-based RT program, while utilizing a supervised model for safety. DISCUSSION: Findings will improve delivery of comprehensive survivorship care by providing a multicomponent, patient-centered lifestyle strategy to preserve muscle mass, improve health outcomes, and complement cancer treatment (NCT06112990).

Our previous study indicated that whey protein hydrolysate (WPH) showed effective anti-fatigue properties, but its regulatory mechanism on recovery from exercise in mice is unclear. In the present study, we divided the mice into control, WP, and WPH groups and allowed them to rest for 1 h and 24 h after exercise, respectively. The changes in muscle metabolites of mice in the recovery period were investigated using metabolomics techniques. The results showed that the WPH group significantly up-regulated 94 muscle metabolites within 1 h of rest, which was 1.96 and 2.61 times more than the control and WP groups, respectively. In detail, significant decreases in TCA cycle intermediates, lipid metabolites, and carbohydrate metabolites were observed in the control group during exercise recovery. In contrast, administration with WP and WPH enriched more amino acid metabolites within 1 h of rest, which might provide a more comprehensive metabolic environment for muscle repair. Moreover, the WPH group remarkably stimulated the enhancement of lipid, carbohydrate, and vitamin metabolites in the recovery period which might provide raw materials and energy for anabolic reactions. The result of the western blot further demonstrated that WPH could promote muscle repair via activating the Sestrin2/Akt/mTOR/S6K signaling pathway within 1 h of rest. These findings deepen our understanding of the regulatory mechanisms by WPH to promote muscle recovery and may serve as a reference for comprehensive assessments of protein supplements on exercise.

The intricate nature of cyanotoxin exposure through food reveals a complex web of risks and uncertainties in our dietary choices. With the aim of starting to unravel this intricate nexus, a comprehensive review of 111 papers from the past two decades investigating cyanotoxin contamination in food was undertaken. It revealed a widespread occurrence of cyanotoxins in diverse food sources across 31 countries. Notably, 68% of the studies reported microcystin concentrations exceeding established Tolerable Daily Intake levels. Cyanotoxins were detected in muscles of many fish species, and while herbivorous fish exhibited the highest recorded concentration, omnivorous species displayed a higher propensity for cyanotoxin accumulation, exemplified by Oreochromis niloticus. Beyond fish, crustaceans and bivalves emerged as potent cyanotoxin accumulators. Gaps persist regarding contamination of terrestrial and exotic animals and their products, necessitating further exploration. Plant contamination under natural conditions remains underreported, yet evidence underscores irrigation-driven cyanotoxin accumulation, particularly affecting leafy vegetables. Finally, cyanobacterial-based food supplements often harbored cyanotoxins (57 % of samples were positive) warranting heightened scrutiny, especially for Aphanizomenon flos-aquae-based products. Uncertainties surround precise concentrations due to methodological variations (chemical and biochemical) and extraction limitations, along with the enigmatic fate of toxins during storage, processing, and digestion. Nonetheless, potential health consequences of cyanotoxin exposure via contaminated food include gastrointestinal and neurological disorders, organ damage (e.g. liver, kidneys, muscles), and even elevated cancer risks. While microcystins received significant attention, knowledge gaps persist regarding other cyanotoxins' accumulation, exposure, and effects, as well as combined exposure via multiple pathways. Intriguing and complex, cyanotoxin exposure through food beckons further research for our safer and healthier diets.

Inclusion body myositis is the most common acquired myositis in adults, predominantly weakening forearm flexor and knee extensor muscles. Subclinical respiratory muscle weakness has recently been recognised in people with inclusion body myositis, increasing their risk of respiratory complications. Inspiratory muscle training, a technique which demonstrates efficacy and safety in improving respiratory function in people with neuromuscular disorders, has never been explored in those with inclusion body myositis. In this pilot study, six adults with inclusion body myositis (age range 53 to 81 years) completed eight weeks of inspiratory muscle training. Measures of respiratory function, quality of life, sleep quality and a two-minute walk test were performed pre and post-intervention. All participants improved their respiratory function, with maximal inspiratory pressure, sniff nasal inspiratory pressure and forced vital capacity increasing by an average of 50 % (p = .002), 43 % (p = .018) and 13 % (p = .003) respectively. No significant change was observed in quality of life, sleep quality or two-minute walk test performance. No complications occurred due to inspiratory muscle training This pilot study provides the first evidence that inspiratory muscle training may be safe and effective in people with Inclusion Body Myositis, potentially mitigating the complications of poor respiratory function.

BACKGROUND: Magnesium is critical for musculoskeletal health. Hypertensive patients are at high risk for magnesium deficiency and muscle loss. This study aimed to explore the association between magnesium intake and muscle mass in patients with hypertension. METHODS: In this population-based cross-sectional study, 10,279 U.S. hypertensive adults aged 20 years or older were derived from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 1999-2006 and 2011-2018. Magnesium (Mg) intake from diet and supplements was assessed using 24-hour diet recalls. Muscle mass was evaluated by appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMI, total ASM in kilograms [kg] divided by square of height in meters [m2]). The association of Mg intake with ASMI was estimated using weighted multivariable-adjusted linear regression models and restricted cubic splines. RESULTS: Dose-response analyses showed a positive linear correlation between dietary Mg intake and ASMI. Every additional 100 mg/day in dietary Mg was associated with 0.04 kg/m2 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.02-0.06 kg/m2) higher ASMI. The ASMI in participants who met the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for dietary Mg was 0.10 kg/m2 (95% CI 0.04-0.16 kg/m2) higher than those whose dietary Mg was below estimated average requirement (EAR). However, the relationship of Mg intake from supplements with ASMI was not identified. CONCLUSION: Higher level of dietary Mg intake rather than Mg supplements was associated with more muscle mass in U.S. adults with hypertension, which highlights the importance of meeting the recommended levels for dietary Mg intake.

The objectives were to investigate whether cupping therapy improves muscle quality and the interaction between duration and negative pressure of cupping therapy affects muscle quality. A 2×2 factorial design with repeated measures was used to examine the efficacy of cupping therapy on improving muscle quality. The independent factors were cupping pressures at -225 and -300 mmHg and cupping durations at 5 and 10 min, and the dependent factor was texture of B-mode ultrasound image of the triceps. Four cupping protocols were applied to 12 participants at 4 different days. Texture analysis including contrast, correlation, energy, and homogeneity was applied to assess muscle quality from 480 ultrasound images. The two-way repeated measures ANOVA showed that there was an interaction between the pressure and duration factors on the superficial layer of the triceps in contrast (F = 5.434, P = 0.004) and correlation (F = 6.274, P = 0.029). In contrast texture, the superficial layer of the triceps showed a significant increase in three protocols: -225 mmHg for 5 min (1.0434 ± 0.130), -300 mmHg for 5 min (1.0339 ±0.1407), and -300 mmHg for 10 min (1.0563 ±0.1432) except -225 mmHg for 10 min (0.9704 ±0.0985). In correlation texture, the superficial layer of the triceps showed a significant decrease in all protocols: -225 mmHg for 5 min (0.9556 ± 0.07), -225 mmHg for 10 min (0.9831 ± 0.0708), -300 mmHg for 5 min (0.9976 ± 0.055), and -300 mmHg for 10 min (0.9406 ± 0.0809). The results indicate that the interaction between the pressure and duration factors of cupping therapy significantly increases contrast texture and significantly decreases correlation texture of the superficial layer of the triceps after cupping therapy. Cupping therapy decreases homogeneity among soft tissues of the treated muscle.

Background and objectives: Musculoskeletal (MSK) pain significantly impacts physical activity and quality of life in older adults, potentially influencing mortality. This study explored the relationship between MSK pain, physical activity, muscle mass, and mortality among older adults. Material and Methods: We studied 1000 participants in the Korean Longitudinal Study on Health and Aging (KLoSHA), a prospective, population-based cohort study of people aged 65 years or older. Survival status was tracked over a 5-year period. Correlations between low back pain (LBP), knee pain, regular exercise, appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM), and other variables were analyzed. Logistic regression analyses were used to identify independent risk factors for mortality. Results: Of the total participants, 829 (82.9%) survived over a 5-year period. Survivors tended to be younger, had a higher BMI, and were more active in regular exercise. In contrast, non-survivors exhibited a higher prevalence of both LBP and knee pain, along with increased instances of multiple MSK pains. Lower ASM correlated moderately with LBP and knee pain, whereas higher ASM was associated with regular exercise. There was a moderate correlation between LBP and knee pain, both of which were associated with a lack of regular exercise. Age, sex, ASM, and regular exercise were significant predictors, even though MSK pain itself did not directly predict all-cause mortality. Conclusions: This study demonstrated the independent association between ASM, regular exercise, and mortality. Although MSK pain did not directly correlate with all-cause mortality, the non-survivor group had higher levels of both single and multiple MSK pains. Recognizing the interplay of MSK pain, physical activity, and muscle mass for older adults, the research underscores the need for holistic strategies to enhance health outcomes in older individuals with MSK pain.

The process of producing cell-cultured meat involves utilizing a significant amount of culture medium, including fetal bovine serum (FBS), which represents a considerable portion of production expense while also raising environmental and safety concerns. This study demonstrated that supplementation with Auxenochlorella pyrenoidosa protein extract (APE) under low-serum conditions substantially increased Carassius auratus muscle (CAM) cell proliferation and heightened the expression of Myf5 compared to the absence of APE. An integrated intracellular metabolomics and proteomics analysis revealed a total of 13 and 67 differentially expressed metabolites and proteins, respectively, after supplementation with APE in the medium containing 5%FBS, modulating specific metabolism and signaling pathways, which explained the application of APE for passage cell culture under low-serum conditions. Further analysis revealed that the bioactive factors in the APE were protein components. Moreover, CAM cells cultured in reconstructed serum-free media containing APE, l-ascorbic acid, insulin, transferrin, selenium, and ethanolamine exhibited significantly accelerated growth in a scale-up culture. These findings suggest a promising alternative to FBS for fish muscle cell culture that can help reduce production costs and environmental impact in the production of cultured meat.

The paper explores the correlation between jingjin (muscle regions of meridians, sinews/fascia) injury and wulao (five types of exhaustion) and the relevant prevention and treatment strategies, and determines the internal mechanism of the disease so as to provide the ideas for prevention and treatment of jingjin injury. Wulao may result in jingjin injury not only through the damages of blood, qi, muscles, bones and tendons indirectly, but also through the damage of soft tissues directly. The great attention should be paid to preventing from jingjin injury, especially wulao, due to which, the appropriate combination of the static and the dynamic skills is emphasized in the way of physical exercise. When the injury occurred, the conditions of the whole body should be analyzed comprehensively and the local affected regions be concentrated simultaneously in treatment. For the indirect injury, the holistic idea should be the basis of regulating five zang organs and restoring the physiological functions of blood, qi, muscles, bones and sinews so as to adjust jingjin. Regarding the direct injury, the staging regimen for the local treatment is considered to harmonize qi and blood and balance sinews and bones. When the injury has been cured, the physical exercise is recommended to strengthen sinews and bones according to individual conditions to prevent from recurrence.

(1) Background: Ultra-endurance exercise involves a high physical impact, resulting in muscle damage, inflammatory response and production of free radicals that alter the body's oxidative state. Supplementation with antioxidants, such as beetroot, may improve recovery in ultra-endurance runners. The aim of this study was to determine whether there is a correlation between beetroot intake and recovery of serum oxidative status, inflammatory response and muscle damage parameters after an ultra-endurance race. (2) Methods: An observational and longitudinal study was conducted by means of surveys and blood samples collected from 32 runners during the IX Penyagolosa Trails CSP®® race and the two following days. The variables C-reactive protein (CRP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK), the activity of the antioxidant enzymes glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione reductase (GR) as well as the oxidative damage markers malondialdehyde (MDA), carbonyl groups (CG) and loss of muscle strength using the squat jump (SJ) test were analyzed to discriminate whether beetroot consumption can modulate the recovery of ultra-trail runners. (3) Results: Significant differences were observed between runners who ingested beetroot and those who did not, in terms of oxidative status, specifically in serum GPx activity at 24 and 48 h, muscle damage variables CK and LDH and regarding the SJ test results at the finish line. Therefore, the intake of supplements containing beetroot positively influences the recovery of serum oxidative status and muscle damage after ultra-endurance running.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this clinical study is to obtain evidence for the clinical efficacy of Bu-Shen-Jian-Pi formula (BSJP), a traditional Chinese medicine, used for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a relatively rare, progressive and usually fatal disease possibly associated with alterations in tissue redox status, hypoxia, and muscular injury. BACKGROUND: The active agents in BSJP formula† causing apoptosis, modulation of redox changes, and alterations in the immune status have been studied previously by us using cell cultures. The findings from these investigations have been incorporated into pharmacology databases employed in our analysis of BSJP using network pharmacology analysis/artifical intelligence. This information has been used here in the design of the investigation and to optimize evaluation of the clinical efficacy and usefulness of this herbal medicine, as far as possible using evidence-based medicine criteria. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The design of the study was a randomized multi-center, controlled clinical trial in 127 patients with confirmed diagnoses of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Patients and investigator were double-blinded. Clinical efficacy was determined using the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Symptom Score in Integrative Treatment Scale (ALS-SSIT) and the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Rating Scale-Revised (ALSFRS-R), together with tests of limb muscle strength using the manual muscle test (MMT), forced vital capacity (FVC), and clinical chemistry laboratory tests over a 20-week observation period. RESULTS: The scores of ALS-SSIT in the BSJP group increased significantly (22%) after treatment. The ALSFRS-R score in the BSJP group decreased significantly after treatment (19%). The rate of decrease in muscle function (MMT score) in most BSJP patients was lower than that in the control group, where the differences in the scores for the trapezius and triceps brachii were statistically significant compared to the control group. The fall in FVC in the BJSP group was significantly slower than in the control group. There were no marked differences observed in the frequency of side effects. Serum vitamin D3 levels in the BSJP group showed greater increases compared to the control group. CONCLUSION: BSJP treatment reduced the rate of progression of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis according to the ALS-SSITS and ALSFRS scores and significantly reduced the rate of deterioration in muscle function in the limbs of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients. The modes of action of BSJP in treating amyotrophic lateral sclerosis are probably diverse and multi targeted, some of which may involve regulation of serum vitamin D3 and alleviation of the impairments in liver and kidney function.

PURPOSE: This study aims to elucidate the dose-dependent effect of coenzyme Q10 supplementation (CoQ10) on exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD), physical performance, and oxidative stress in adults. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted through PubMed, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science databases up to August 2023, focusing on randomized control trials (RCTs) that investigated the effects of CoQ10 supplementation on EIMD recovery, physical performance and oxidative stress mitigation in adults. The weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95 % confidence interval (95 %CI) were estimated using the random-effects model. RESULTS: The meta-analysis incorporated 28 RCTs, encompassing 830 subjects. CoQ10 supplementation significantly decreased creatine kinase (CK) (WMD: -50.64 IU/L; 95 %CI: -74.75, -26.53, P < 0.001), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) (WMD: -52.10 IU/L; 95 %CI: -74.01, -30.19, P < 0.001), myoglobin (Mb) (WMD: -21.77 ng/ml; 95 %CI: -32.59, -10.94, P < 0.001), and Malondialdehyde (MDA) (WMD: -0.73 µmol/l; 95 %CI: -1.26, -0.20, P = 0.007) levels. No significant alteration in total antioxidant capacity was observed post-CoQ10 treatment. Each 100 mg/day increase in CoQ10 supplementation was correlated with a significant reduction in CK (MD: -23.07 IU/L, 95 %CI: -34.27, -11.86), LDH (WMD: -27.21 IU/L, 95 %CI: -28.23, -14.32), Mb (MD: -7.09 ng/ml; 95 %CI: -11.35, -2.83) and MDA (WMD: -0.17 µmol/l, 95 %CI: -0.29, -0.05) serum levels. Using SMD analysis, "very large" effects on LDH and "moderate" effects on CK and MDA were noted, albeit nonsignificant for other outcomes. CONCLUSION: CoQ10 supplementation may be effective in reducing biomarkers of EIMD and oxidative stress in adults. Nevertheless, given the preponderance of studies conducted in Asia, the generalizability of these findings warrants caution. Further RCTs, particularly in non-Asian populations with large sample sizes and extended supplementation durations, are essential to substantiate these observations.

Optimization of broiler chicken breast muscle protein accretion is key for the efficient production of poultry meat, whose demand is steadily increasing. In a context where antimicrobial growth promoters use is being restricted, it is important to find alternatives as well as to characterize the effect of immunological stress on broiler chicken's growth. Despite its importance, research on broiler chicken muscle protein dynamics has mostly been limited to the study of mixed protein turnover. The present study aims to characterize the effect of a bacterial challenge and the feed supplementation of citrus and cucumber extracts on broiler chicken individual breast muscle proteins fractional synthesis rates (FSR) using a recently developed dynamic proteomics pipeline. Twenty-one day-old broiler chickens were administered a single 2H2O dose before being culled at different timepoints. A total of 60 breast muscle protein extracts from five experimental groups (Unchallenged, Challenged, Control Diet, Diet 1 and Diet 2) were analysed using a DDA proteomics approach. Proteomics data was filtered in order to reliably calculate multiple proteins FSR making use of a newly developed bioinformatics pipeline. Broiler breast muscle proteins FSR uniformly decreased following a bacterial challenge, this change was judged significant for 15 individual proteins, the two major functional clusters identified as well as for mixed breast muscle protein. Citrus or cucumber extract feed supplementation did not show any effect on the breast muscle protein FSR of immunologically challenged broilers. The present study has identified potential predictive markers of breast muscle growth and provided new information on broiler chicken breast muscle protein synthesis which could be essential for improving the efficiency of broiler chicken meat production. SIGNIFICANCE: The present study constitutes the first dynamic proteomics study conducted in a farm animal species which has characterized FSR in a large number of proteins, establishing a precedent for biomarker discovery and assessment of health and growth status. Moreover, it has been evidenced that the decrease in broiler chicken breast muscle protein following an immune challenge is a coordinated event which seems to be the main cause of the decreased growth observed in these animals.

Food-derived angiotensin-converting enzyme-inhibitory (ACE-I) peptides have attracted extensive attention. Herein, the ACE-I peptides from Scomber japonicus muscle hydrolysates were screened, and their mechanisms of action and inhibition stability were explored. The quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model based on 5z-scale metrics was developed to rapidly screen for ACE-I peptides. Two novel potential ACE-I peptides (LTPFT, PLITT) were predicted through this model coupled with in silico screening, of which PLITT had the highest activity (IC50: 48.73 ± 7.59 µM). PLITT inhibited ACE activity with a mixture of non-competitive and competitive mechanisms, and this inhibition mainly contributed to the hydrogen bonding based on molecular docking study. PLITT is stable under high temperatures, pH, glucose, and NaCl. The zinc ions (Zn2+) and copper ions (Cu2+) enhanced ACE-I activity. The study suggests that the QSAR model is effective in rapidly screening for ACE-I inhibitors, and PLITT can be supplemented in foods to lower blood pressure.

INTRODUCTION: Ankle fractures are one of the most common lower extremity fractures. After surgery, the ankle joint is often immobilized in a plantar flexion position, and there have been many reported cases of limited ankle joint range of motion. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of regular massage interventions on ankle joint range of motion after removal of fixation. METHODS: The massage group comprised 30 patients who had sustained an ankle fracture and had undergone surgical fixation, physical therapy, and massage between November 2020 and March 2022. These subjects received a 3-min massage twice daily, five times a week. The control group consisted of 38 patients who had sustained an ankle fracture between January 2015 and September 2020 and had undergone surgical fixation as well as regular physical therapy. RESULTS: The respective ankle dorsiflexion and plantarflexion ranges of motion after cast removal were 2.50 ± 7.2° and 42.3 ± 7.2° in the massage group and -8.62 ± 2.9° and 34.8 ± 8.3° in the control group. An unpaired t-test showed that the ankle dorsiflexion and plantarflexion ranges of motion in the massage group were significantly greater than those in the control group (p = 0.036 and p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that regular 3-min massage interventions of the plantar flexors could prevent the progression of a range of motion limitations in postoperative patients with an ankle fracture more effectively than regular physical therapy alone.

BACKGROUND: Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization and foam rolling are two techniques that have been proven effective in treating Myofascial Trigger Points, irrespective of the type of trigger point. However, little is known about the comparative effectiveness of Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization and foam rolling. This study proposed to evaluate the effectiveness of either technique on plantar flexors trigger points, ankle dorsiflexion, and lower limb power present in the calf muscles in non-symptomatic patients. METHOD: Forty-two subjects with bilateral calf muscle tightness, at least one trigger point in the calf muscle, and fulfilling the inclusion criteria were randomly assigned to either of the groups. Group A was treated for gastrocnemius and soleus trigger points using Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization and Group B was treated using the Foam Rolling method. Treatment was given every alternate day, a total of 3 sessions. Subjects were evaluated on 1st and 3rd sessions for pre-post differences of ankle dorsiflexion Range of motion in weight bearing and non-weight bearing position, pressure pain threshold for gastrocnemius trigger point 1(G1), 2(G2), and soleus point 1(S1) on both sides, and lower limb power. RESULT: Within group analyses, both groups had shown statistically significant results for all parameters except gastrocnemius trigger point 2 of foam rolling. For between group comparison foam rolling had a statistically significant result in non-weight bearing ankle dorsiflexion range of motion. CONCLUSION: Both Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization and Foam rolling were equally effective for treating calf trigger points. But foam rolling was more effective in improving ankle dorsiflexion range of motion.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effect of Verbal Instruction (VI) strategies on trunk muscle contraction among healthy subjects. The effect of three VI Abdominal Drawing-In Maneuver (ADIM) and two VI Abdominal Bracing Maneuver (ABM) strategies on left Internal (LIO) and External Oblique (LEO) and bilateral superficial Multifidi (sMf) activation was examined. DESIGN: Within-subjects, repeated measure design. METHODS: Surface EMG (sEMG) measured LIO, LEO, and sMf activity in 28 subjects (mean age 23.5 ± 5.5 years). Testing included five supine hook-lying and five quiet standing conditions. RESULTS: One-way ANOVAs demonstrated no significant main effect for ADIM or ABM in supine or standing (p > .05). Muscle activation amplitudes during VPAC conditions demonstrated higher mean values for standing versus supine (p < .05) except for two conditions involving LEO. Friedman Tests for dominant strategy demonstrated a significant main effect for ADIM-VI and ABM-VI strategies. Post-hoc testing generally showed the dominant strategy to be significantly higher versus others. CONCLUSION: No single preferred VI cue for ADIM or ABM was observed. Each subject's dominant strategy dictated the most suitable VI. Standing was preferred for LIO and sMf activation, whereas position did not change LEO activation. Non-significant correlations between all muscle pairings during all ADIM and ABM strategies were observed. These findings may suggest the need for healthcare providers who understand the intricacies of trunk stability to teach and monitor VPAC with either ADIM or ABM options.

INTRODUCTION: The ability to stand up and sit down is important. Due to the large number of repetitions of these activities during the day and the demand that the task requires, it is cited as painful in the presence of low back pain (LBP). Individuals with LBP present alterations in muscle activation, however, this statement needs to be verified during everyday situations like the sit-to-stand task (STST). Therefore, the objective was to evaluate the muscle recruitment of women with and without LBP during the STST. METHODS: 35 women were evaluated, and allocated into the control group (CG n = 15) and the low back pain group (LBPG n = 20). The protocol consisted of clinical evaluation and the sit-to-stand task (STST). Electromyographic signals of the lumbar multifidus (LM), internal oblique (IO) and external oblique (EO), rectus abdominis (RA), and lumbar iliocostalis (LI) were carried out concomitantly with the STST. To verify normality, the Shapiro-Wilk test was used. For the characterization of the sample, the MANOVA test was chosen and the MANCOVA test was also chosen to compare the characteristics of the participants. RESULTS: Regarding the data analysis of the electromyographic signals, higher values were seen in the RA (moments 2 and 3) in the LBPG in the STST. CONCLUSION: The present study showed that women with chronic LBP present higher muscle activation of the rectus abdominis in the sit-to-stand task.
