RESUMEN

In most bird species, parents raise offspring cooperatively. In some cases, this cooperation extends to helpers-at-the-nest who assist the breeders with a range of tasks. While cooperative food provisioning might merely arise incidentally, as a result of the efforts of carers that act independently from each other, recent studies suggest that birds may coordinate by taking turns in visiting the nest. However, evidence that such coordination emerges because individuals actively respond to each other's behaviour is controversial, and the potential benefits of carers' alternation remain unknown. We addressed this knowledge gap by analysing a multiyear dataset for cooperatively breeding carrion crows Corvus corone, comprising 8693 nest visits across 50 groups. Our results reveal that turn-taking does occur in this species and that all group members, regardless of their sex and social role (breeder/helper), tend to alternate at the nest with other carers rather than to make repeat visits. Importantly, we found that the body mass of nestlings increased significantly with the degree of carers' alternation, possibly because well-coordinated groups provided food at more regular intervals. Using earlier monitoring data, the observed increase in body mass is predicted to substantially boost postfledging survival rates. Our analyses demonstrate that alternation in nestling provisioning has measurable fitness benefits in this study system. This raises the possibility that cooperatively breeding carrion crows, as well as other bird species with similarly coordinated brood provisioning, exhibit specialized behavioural strategies that enable effective alternation.


En la mayoría de las especies de aves, los padres cooperan entre sí en el cuidado de sus crías. En algunos casos, la cooperación se extiende a individuos ayudantes que asisten a los reproductores en diferentes tareas. El aprovisionamiento cooperativo de las crías puede darse simplemente como resultado del esfuerzo de cuidadores que actúan de forma independiente, pero estudios recientes sugieren que las aves pueden coordinarse, tomando turnos a la hora de visitar el nido. Sin embargo, las evidencias de que dicha coordinación ocurre porque los individuos realmente responden al comportamiento de los demás es controvertida, y los potenciales beneficios de la alternancia al nido son desconocidos. Nosotros abordamos estos aspectos analizando una base de datos plurianual en la corneja negra Corvus corone, que incluye 8693 visitas al nido en 50 grupos. Nuestros resultados revelan que se produce toma de turnos en esta especie y que todos los miembros del grupo, independientemente del sexo y del estatus social (reproductor / ayudante), tienden a alternarse al nido con otros cuidadores, en vez de repetir visitas. Más importante aún, encontramos que la masa corporal de los polluelos aumentaba de forma significativa al aumentar el grado de coordinación de los cuidadores, posiblemente porque los grupos mejor coordinados aprovisionaban las crías a intervalos más regulares. Basándonos en datos anteriores, pudimos calcular que el incremento observado en masa corporal predice un aumento sustancial de la tasa de supervivencia de los volanderos. Nuestros análisis demuestran, por lo tanto, que la alternancia al nido tiene beneficios medibles en eficacia biológica. Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) is attacked by several pathogens such as the biotrophic gamma-proteobacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv. phaseolicola. To study the P. syringae pv. phaseolicola-bean interaction during the first stages of infection, leaf discs of a susceptible bean cultivar Riñón were infected with pathogenic P. syringae pv. phaseolicola. Using this experimental system, we tested six new putative wall-associated kinase (WAK) receptors, previously identified in silico. These six P. vulgaris WAKs (PvWAKs) showed high protein sequence homology to the well-described Arabidopsis thaliana WAK1 (AtWAK1) receptor and, by phylogenetic analysis, clustered together with AtWAKs. The expression of PvWAK1 increased at very early stages after the P. syringae pv. phaseolicola infection. Time course experiments were performed to evaluate the accumulation of apoplastic H2O2, Ca2+ influx, total H2O2, antioxidant enzymatic activities, lipid peroxidation, and the concentrations of abscisic acid and salicylic acid (SA), as well as the expression of six defense-related genes: MEKK-1, MAPKK, WRKY33, RIN4, PR1, and NPR1. The results showed that overexpression of PR1 occurred 2 h after P. syringae pv. phaseolicola infection without a concomitant increase in SA levels. Although apoplastic H2O2 increased after infection, the oxidative burst was neither intense nor rapid, and an efficient antioxidant response did not occur, suggesting that the observed cellular damage was caused by the initial increase in total H2O2 early after infection. In conclusion, Riñón can perceive the presence of P. syringae pv. phaseolicola, but this recognition results in only a modest and slow activation of host defenses, leading to high susceptibility to P. syringae pv. phaseolicola.

BACKGROUND: Occupational contact urticaria due to inhalation of legume pest allergens has rarely been described. OBJECTIVE: To determine the cause of an outbreak of airborne contact urticaria, asthma, and anaphylaxis in farmers and agronomists studying the disinsectization of dried peas. Peas were treated with aluminum phosphide (EPA). METHODS: Extracts prepared from Bruchus lentis and Bruchus pisorum bodies and from healthy legumes, EPA-treated legumes, and infested legumes, were used for in vivo tests (skin prick testing, oral, and specific bronchial challenge for the diagnosis of asthma and anaphylaxis) in affected patients and in five control patients with severe legume hypersensitivity. Open application, patch testing with the most common legume insecticides, molecular analysis, and IgE immunoblotting were undertaken. RESULTS: We found positive responses (prick, provocation, immune detection) to parasitic pea extracts and B. pisorum. A 25 kDa band was detected in the western blot of all patients who worked with infested EPA-treated peas. Bands from B. pisorum extract were detected in all patients. No responses to pea allergens were found in any patient, unlike in legume allergy controls. Oral provocation tests were negative. CONCLUSION: B. pisorum is a cause of contact urticaria and may cause occupational hives, anaphylaxis, and asthma. The allergen may enter by inhalation or puncture of setae released by B. pisorum.

Background & Aims: Malnutrition, sarcopenia, and frailty are prevalent in cirrhosis. We aimed to assess the correlation between assessment tools for malnutrition, sarcopenia, and frailty in patients on the liver transplant (LT) waiting list (WL), and to identify a predictive model for acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) development. Methods: This prospective single-center study enrolled consecutive patients with cirrhosis on the WL for LT (May 2019-November 2021). Assessments included subjective global assessment, CT body composition, skeletal muscle index (SMI), ultrasound thigh muscle thickness, sarcopenia HIBA score, liver frailty index (LFI), hand grip strength, and 6-minute walk test at enrollment. Correlations were analyzed using Pearson's correlation. Competing risk regression analysis was used to assess the predictive ability of the liver- and functional physiological reserve-related variables for ACLF. Results: A total of 132 patients, predominantly with decompensated cirrhosis (87%), were included. Our study revealed a high prevalence of malnutrition (61%), sarcopenia (61%), visceral obesity (20%), sarcopenic visceral obesity (17%), and frailty (10%) among participants. Correlations between the assessment tools for sarcopenia and frailty were poor. Sarcopenia by SMI remained prevalent when frailty assessments were not usable. After a median follow-up of 10 months, 39% of the patients developed ACLF on WL, while 28% experienced dropouts without ACLF. Multivariate analysis identified MELD-Na, SMI, and LFI as independent predictors of ACLF on the WL. The predictive model MELD-Na-sarcopenia-LFI had a C-statistic of 0.85. Conclusions: The poor correlation between sarcopenia assessment tools and frailty underscores the importance of a comprehensive evaluation. The SMI, LFI, and MELD-Na independently predicted ACLF development in WL. These findings enhance our understanding of the relationship between sarcopenia, frailty, and ACLF in patients awaiting LT, emphasizing the need for early detection and intervention to improve WL outcomes. Impact and implications: The relationship between sarcopenia and frailty assessment tools, as well as their ability to predict acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) in patients on the liver transplant (LT) waiting list (WL), remains poorly understood. Existing objective frailty screening tests have limitations when applied to critically ill patients. The correlation between sarcopenia and frailty assessment tools was weak, suggesting that they may capture different phenotypes. Sarcopenia assessed by skeletal muscle index, frailty evaluated using the liver frailty index, and the model for end-stage liver disease-Na score independently predicted the development of ACLF in patients on the WL. Our findings support the integration of liver frailty index and skeletal muscle index assessments at the time of inclusion on the WL for LT. This combined approach allows for the identification of a specific patient subgroup with an increased susceptibility to ACLF, underscoring the importance of early implementation of targeted treatment strategies to improve outcomes for patients awaiting LT.

Verticillium wilt is a devastating disease affecting many crops, including hops. This study aims to describe fungal and bacterial populations associated with bulk and rhizosphere soils in a hop field cultivated in Slovenia with the Celeia variety, which is highly susceptible to Verticillium nonalfalfae. As both healthy and diseased plants coexist in the same field, we focused this study on the detection of putative differences in the microbial communities associated with the two types of plants. Bacterial communities were characterized by sequencing the V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene, whereas sequencing of the ITS2 region was performed for fungal communities. The bacterial community was dominated by phyla Proteobacteria, Acidobacteriota, Bacteroidota, Actinobacteriota, Planctomycetota, Chloroflexi, Gemmatimonadota, and Verrucomicrobiota, which are typically found in crop soils throughout the world. At a fungal level, Fusarium sp. was the dominant taxon in both bulk and rhizosphere soils. Verticillium sp. levels were very low in all samples analyzed and could only be detected by qPCR in the rhizosphere of diseased plants. The rhizosphere of diseased plants underwent important changes with respect to the rhizosphere of healthy plants where significant increases in potentially beneficial fungi such as the basidiomycetes Ceratobasidium sp. and Mycena sp., the zygomycete Mortierella sp., and a member of Glomeralles were observed. However, the rhizosphere of diseased plants experienced a decrease in pathogenic basidiomycetes that can affect the root system, such as Thanatephorus cucumeris (the teleomorph of Rhizoctonia solani) and Calyptella sp.

Lodging is one of the causes of maize (Zea mays L.) production losses worldwide and, at least, the resistance to stalk lodging has been positively correlated with stalk strength. In order to elucidate the putative relationship between cell wall, stalk strength and lodging resistance, twelve maize inbreds varying in rind penetration strength and lodging resistance were characterized for cell wall composition and structure. Stepwise multiple regression indicates that H lignin subunits confer a greater rind penetration strength. Besides, the predictive model for lodging showed that a high ferulic acid content increases the resistance to lodging, whereas those of diferulates decrease it. These outcomes highlight that the strength and lodging susceptibility of maize stems may be conditioned by structural features of cell wall rather than by the net amount of cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin. The results presented here provide biotechnological targets in breeding programs aimed at improving lodging in maize.

RESUMEN

Uroleucon Mordvilko is the largest genus in the Macrosiphini (Hemiptera, Aphididae) and most of its species live on species of Asteraceae. Uroleucon nahuelhuapense Nieto Nafría von Dohlen sp. n. is described from apterous viviparous females collected on Adesmia boronioides (Fabaceae) in a locality of Neuquén province (Argentina). The morphological characters and the sequence of the tRNAleu-COII mitochondrial locus support the inclusion of the new species in the genus Uroleucon. Apterous viviparous females of Uroleucon adesmiae Mier Durante Ortego collected in two Argentinean localities have also been studied and ranges of several quantitative features have been modified. The identification key for the Uroleucon species known in South America by Nieto Nafría et al. (2007) has been modified to include the new species.
