Background and Objectives: The resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to antibiotics offers a significant challenge in the treatment of patients. This study aimed to investigate the antimicrobial resistance profile, biofilm-specific antimicrobial resistance genes, and genetic diversity of P. aeruginosa recovered from clinical samples. Materials and Methods: Totally 47 non-duplicate isolates of P. aeruginosa were recovered from various clinical samples. toxA, algD, ndvB, and tssC1 genes were detected in biofilm-producing isolates. The DNA sequences of the toxA and tssC1 genes were analyzed, by creating phylogenetic trees. Results: The findings revealed that 30 (63.8%) of the isolates tested positive for Extended spectrum ß-lactamase (ESBL), whereas 31 (65.9%) tested positive for Metallo-ß-lactamase (MBL) and all of the isolates presented the toxA genes, and 19.1%,17%, 6.3% presented by algD, ndvB and tssC1 genes. Besides, the phylogenetic trees of the toxA and tssC1 gene isolates suggested a genotype that was closely aligned with others. Gene sequencing similarity revealed 99% identity with other isolates deposited in GenBank. Conclusion: The occurrence of toxA was most prevalent. One isolate was recorded as a novel isolate in the global gene bank as a locally isolated strain from the city of Erbil that has never been identified in global isolates due to genetic variation.

Background and objectives: The World Health Organization (WHO) announced the appearance of a new coronavirus disease in Hubei province, China, to be a public health emergency of international concern. The objectives of this study can be highlighted through classifying the information sources for identifying protective practices, death probability, gender-death associations probability and education level. Methodology: This is a descriptive design study conducted among the Kurdistan Region/Iraq population via an online application between 1 March and 1 May 2020. Three hundred twenty people participated in this questionnaire study. The data were collected through an online form, relying upon a self-report questionnaire. The questionnaire had three main parts. The first part is related to the socio-demographic characteristics of the sample, including gender, age, family status, address status and education level. The second part involves the items related to precautionary measures using none, sometimes, and always. The last part contains items related to death probability owing to other causes and this includes five categories: extremely low, low, intermediate, high and extremely high. The validity and reliability of this questionnaire were revised by the panel of experts before the data collection. Results: The outcomes of the study revealed that the majority, ca. 73%, of the Kurdistan Region/Iraq population depended on TV to obtain information about COVID-19. Also, this investigation showed that there is a substantial association between participants with infection prevention and control practices relevant to COVID-19. Moreover, according to this study, there is a significant relationship between the death probability and COVID-19. Concurrently, there is not any significant association between other causes, namely cancer, heart diseases, diabetes and road traffic accidents, and the death probability. Conclusion: This study showed that for the majority of the Kurdistan Region/Iraq population the most reliable source of information for any COVID-19 related updates is the TV broadcast. This study also indicated that there is strong association for the majority of individuals regarding their practices for prevention from COVID-19 and death probability with COVID-19. However, there is not any substantial association between the epidemic and the other deadly calamities and the death probability.

INTRODUCTION: There are limited published data regarding the recent incidence trends of cancer in Iraqi Kurdistan. METHODS: The present study assessed the epidemiological estimates of cancer incidence, as well providing a projection of future cancer trends in the upcoming decade by analysing the population-based cancer registry between 2013 and 2019, in both the Erbil and Duhok governorates. A retrospective analysis was performed on data retrieved from the Medical Statistics Department at the Ministry of Health, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). RESULTS: The total number of female cancer patients was higher in both governorates, and the total incidence of patients with cancer increased by over 2x between 2013 and 2019 in Erbil and Duhok, from 73 to 174 patients/100,000 individuals for women, and 36 to 85 patients/100,000 individuals for men. Analysis indicated that the percentage of patients with cancer is projected to increase by >2x in the current decade, from 3,457 cases to 4,547 and 4,449 cases in the Erbil governorate; and from 1,365 to 2,633 and 2,737 cases in 2028 based on LSTM and bi-LTSM analysis in the Duhok governorate. Lung cancer (LC) and female breast cancer (BC) were the most prominent types of cancers diagnosed since 2013 in both the Erbil and Duhok governorates. CONCLUSION: The striking pattern of trends for both present and future cancer incidence rates require urgent solutions and comprehensive efforts to control risk factors that promote the increasing incidence of cancer in these two KRG governorates.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a ubiquitous microorganism that is difficult to treat due to the increasing prevalence of multidrug resistance patterns. A total of 227 samples were taken from different clinical samples during the study period from January 2018 to December 2018. The isolates were identified with antibiotic sensitivity testing with ESBL by the Vitek-2 automated method. MDR, XDR, and PDR were determined. 40 (17.6%) isolates were positive for P. aeruginosa, maximum of ESBL and MBL. Positive isolates were detected in the burn, coexisting ESBL + MBL enzymes in 21 (52.5%) of our isolates. Imipenem followed by Meropenem were found to be effective against ESBL and MBL producers. Resistance was reached between 72-100% to 5 antibiotics. The frequency of PDR, MDR, and XDR were 5%, 50%, and 45%, respectively. The frequency of co-production between MDR, XDR, and PDR with MBL, ESBL, and Biofilm was 35%, 12.5% and 5%, respectively. Among the ESBLs, the frequency of distribution of bla VEB-1gene and blaGES-5 gene was 50% and 40 %, respectively. Bacterial isolates simultaneously carrying blaVEB-1 gene with multiple ß-lactamases of different classes of biofilm, MDR, PDR, and XDR as same as a coexisting blaGES-5 gene. One isolate was detected as new isolates registered in global gene bank as locally P. aeruginosa isolates in Erbil city (LOCUS MN900953). The phylogenetic trees of the blaVEB gene isolates were demonstrated a genotype closely related to others, deposited in GenBank similar to the P. aeruginosa gene; gene sequencing revealed a 99% similarity with other isolates deposited in GenBank.

RESUMEN

Nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) represents a group of inducible transcription factors (TFs) regulating the expression of a great variety of genes implicated in diverse processes, particularly modulation of immune system responses. This TF has functional interactions with non-coding RNAs, constructing a complicated network through which NF-κB, miRNAs, and lncRNAs coordinately regulate gene expression at different facets. This type of interaction is involved in the pathophysiology of several human disorders including both neoplastic disorders and non-neoplastic conditions. MALAT1 and NKILA are among lncRNAs whose interactions with NF-κB have been vastly assessed in different conditions including cancer and inflammatory conditions. In addition, miR-146a/b has functional interactions with this TF in different contexts. Although miRNAs have mutual interactions with NF-κB, the regulatory role of miRNAs on this TF has been more clarified. The aim of the current review is to explore the function of NF-κB-related miRNAs and lncRNAs in these two types of human disorders.

INTRODUCTION: The present study aimed to determine the alterations in the serum levels of tumor markers used to evaluate cardiac, renal and liver function, and detect the interleukin (IL)-18 rs1946518 polymorphism in breast (BC), colorectal (CRC) and prostate cancer (PCa) patients. METHODS: Blood samples were collected from 65 female BC, 116 CRC, 79 PCa and 88 myocardial infarction (MI) patients, and 110 healthy individuals to determine the concentration of tumor and cardiac markers. Furthermore, the IL-18 rs1946518 polymorphism was assessed using amplification refractory mutation system (ARMS)-PCR. RESULTS: The serum levels of the tumor markers cancer antigen 15-3 (CA 15-3), carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and total prostate-specific antigen (TPSA) were significantly increased in cancer patients compared with healthy controls. Furthermore, the activity of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) and creatine kinase­myocardial band (CK-MB) was enhanced in MI patients, however, their activity was unchanged in cancer patients. The activity of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and the serum concentration of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and urea were markedly elevated in CRC and PCa patients, respectively, compared with the control group. Although, no significant differences were observed in the -607 C/A polymorphism and allele frequency of IL-18 among BC, CRC patients and healthy individuals, the odds ratio (OR) was 1.75 for both C and A allele in BC patients. Therefore, the -607 C/A polymorphism could be considered as a risk factor for BC. CONCLUSION: The aforementioned results suggested that tumor markers could be considered as excellent biomarkers for the early detection of BC, CRC and PCa, whereas the concentration of liver enzymes could serve as an alternative indicator for the diagnosis of CRC and PCa. Additionally, the rs1946518 polymorphism in the IL-18 gene could be considered as a risk factor for the occurrence of BC, CRC and PCa.

BACKGROUND: Ovarian cancer has the highest mortality rate among gynecological malignancies. Despite recent advances in treatment, most patients still suffer from poor prognosis. Curcumin has shown highly cytotoxic effects against different types of cancer. However, its poor bioavailability restricts its clinical application. Gemini Curcumin (Gemini-Cur) has been developed to overcome this limitation. OBJECTIVE: Here, we aimed to unravel the inhibitory effect of Gemini-Cur in ovarian cancer. METHODS: OVCAR-3 cells were treated with free curcumin and Gemni-Cur in a time- and dose-dependent manner. Then, the anticancer activity was investigated by uptake kinetics, cellular viability and apoptotic assays. Furthermore, we evaluated the BAX/Bcl-2 expression ratio by real-time PCR and western blotting. RESULTS: Our data showed that gemini surfactant nanoparticles enhance the cellular uptake of curcumin compared to free curcumin (p<0.01). Regarding the growth inhibitory effect of nano-curcumin, the results demonstrated that Gemini-Cur suppresses the proliferation of OVCAR-3 cells through induction of apoptosis (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: The results illustrate that Gemini-Cur nanoparticles have a great potential for developing novel therapeutics against ovarian cancer.

Introduction: Ischemic stroke is characterized as a sudden neurological deficit attributed to an acute focal injury of the central nervous system by a vascular cause. This study was performed to determine the frequency of G20210A mutation in the prothrombin gene and its effectiveness on the incidence of ischemic stroke in the Erbil city of Kurdistan region, Iraq. Methods: A total of 50 patients with ischemic stroke was analyzed for the detection of prothrombin gene mutation (G20210A), using polymerase chain reaction (PCR), Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) with Hind III restriction enzyme. Results: We observed no evidence of an association between ischemic stroke and G20210A mutation in the prothrombin gene in this region. Conclusion: Our finding demonstrates that prothrombotic gene variant seems not to be linked to the incidence of ischemic stroke in Erbil region.
