ABSTRACT

Bacterial wilt (BW) is a soil-borne disease that leads to severe damage in tomato. Host resistance against BW is considered polygenic and effective in controlling this destructive disease. In this study, genomic selection (GS), which is a promising breeding strategy to improve quantitative traits, was investigated for BW resistance. Two tomato collections, TGC1 (n = 162) and TGC2 (n = 191), were used as training populations. Disease severity was assessed using three seedling assays in each population, and the best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) values were obtained. The 31,142 SNP data were generated using the 51K Axiom array™ in the training populations. With these data, six GS models were trained to predict genomic estimated breeding values (GEBVs) in three populations (TGC1, TGC2, and combined). The parametric models Bayesian LASSO and RR-BLUP resulted in higher levels of prediction accuracy compared with all the non-parametric models (RKHS, SVM, and random forest) in two training populations. To identify low-density markers, two subsets of 1,557 SNPs were filtered based on marker effects (Bayesian LASSO) and variable importance values (random forest) in the combined population. An additional subset was generated using 1,357 SNPs from a genome-wide association study. These subsets showed prediction accuracies of 0.699 to 0.756 in Bayesian LASSO and 0.670 to 0.682 in random forest, which were higher relative to the 31,142 SNPs (0.625 and 0.614). Moreover, high prediction accuracies (0.743 and 0.702) were found with a common set of 135 SNPs derived from the three subsets. The resulting low-density SNPs will be useful to develop a cost-effective GS strategy for BW resistance in tomato breeding programs.

ABSTRACT

Duodenal neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are subepithelial tumors that are difficult to remove endoscopically, particularly when located just beyond the pylorus. This paper reports a case of a successful endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) using open gastric peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) for a remnant duodenal NET detected after endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR). A 67-year-old male presented with a 5 mm remnant duodenal NET close to the pylorus after EMR for a duodenal polypoid lesion performed four months earlier. Duodenal ESD was performed under conscious sedation using I-type and IT II knives. The tumor adhered to the fibrotic tissue, and the submucosal cushion was insufficient. Open gastric POEM was performed concurrently during ESD, resulting in the complete resection of the NET. This case suggests that while challenging, open gastric POEM can serve as a valuable technique for endoscopic resection in cases of early gastric cancer or duodenal masses located around the pylorus.

ABSTRACT

This study explores the environmental impacts of economic policy uncertainty, economic complexity, renewable energy, and energy intensity on the countries in the Group of Seven (G7) countries. To this end, the study employs fully modified ordinary least squares and a fixed effects model with Driscoll and Kraay, Rev Econ Stat 80:549-560, (1998) robust standard errors and a panel dataset from 1997 to 2015. The findings demonstrate a long-term relationship between the variables of interest and carbon dioxide emissions and the ecological footprint. Specifically, high energy intensity increases environmental pollution while high economic policy uncertainty and renewable energy reduces environmental degradation. The environmental Kuznet curve of economic complexity and environmental quality holds for G7 countries. Moreover, economic policy uncertainty strongly moderates the environmental effect of renewable energy, economic complexity, and energy intensity. Specifically, although economic policy uncertainty amplifies the beneficial environmental effects of renewable energy and economic complexity, it enlarges the harmful effect of energy intensity on environmental quality. These empirical outcomes allow us to draw useful implications for policy makers to mitigate the environmental degradation.

ABSTRACT

Bacterial wilt (Ralstonia solanacearum) is a devastating disease of cultivated tomato resulting in severe yield loss. Since chemicals are often ineffective in controlling this soil-borne pathogen, quantitative trait loci (QTL) conferring host resistance have been extensively explored. In this study, we investigated effects of ambient temperature and major QTL on bacterial wilt resistance in a collection of 50 tomato varieties. The five-week-old seedlings were inoculated using the race 1 (biovar 4 and phylotype I) strain of R. solanacearum and placed at growth chambers with three different temperatures (24 °C, 28 °C, and 36 °C). Disease severity was evaluated for seven days after inoculation using the 1-5 rating scales. Consistent bacterial wilt resistance was observed in 25 tomato varieties (R group) with the means of 1.16-1.44 for disease severity at all three temperatures. Similarly, 10 susceptible varieties with the means of 4.37-4.73 (S group) were temperature-independent. However, the other 15 varieties (R/S group) showed moderate levels of resistance at both 24 °C (1.84) and 28 °C (2.16), while they were highly susceptible with a mean of 4.20 at 36 °C. The temperature-dependent responses in the R/S group were supported by pairwise estimates of the Pearson correlation coefficients. Genotyping for three major QTL (Bwr-4, Bwr-6 and Bwr-12) found that 92% of varieties in the R group had ≥ two QTL and 40% of varieties in the R/S group had one or two QTL. This suggests that these QTL are important for stability of resistance against bacterial wilt at high ambient temperature. The resulting 25 varieties with temperature-independent resistance will be a useful resource to develop elite cultivars in tomato breeding programs.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has been affecting the lives of millions of people globally. Patients recovering from COVID-19 are facing, not only the symptom of long COVID, but also psychological problems, such as sleep disturbance. This study aims to assess the proportion of COVID-19 recovered adult patients that suffer from insomnia and associated factors in Vietnam. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed between January and March 2022 among patients who have recovered from a COVID-19 infection. Data were collected based on a self-administered questionnaire that included sociodemographic and standardized questionnaires from the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), the Perceived stress scale (PSS) and the dependent variable using Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). Multivariable logistic regression was conducted to explore factors associated with the patients' insomnia disorder. Results: A total of 325 participants were included in this analysis, 34.5% of participants had insomnia. According to multivariable logistic regression, participants who were equal to and over 50 years of age, feeling alienated from others, and were not supported by families or relatives, reported significantly higher levels of insomnia disorders over those aged under 50 years, having closer ties with family and had received support from family or relatives. Besides, respondents who recorded mental health problems that included anxiety, depression and stress were more likely to get insomnia disorders than those without mental health symptoms (OR 2.7, 95% CI 1.1-6.6) (OR 4.5, 95% CI 2.3-8.9) (OR 2.3, 95% CI 1.1-5.3), respectively, all p < 0.05. Conclusion: There was a remarkable rate of COVID-19 recovered patients experiencing insomnia disorders. Older age, alienated relationships and not being supported by families or relatives, as well as had mental health problems, are factors that affected the patients' insomnia, which showed that these sleep issues need to be screened and managed among adults who have recovered from COVID-19.

Background: The majority of the Khmer ethnic people living in the Mekong Delta had a difficult socioeconomic life and limited access to information and health services. The study was conducted to determine the prevalence of dyslipidemia and risk factors in men and women of the Khmer ethnic people, in Vietnam. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 1.800 Khmer people aged 25 - 64 yr living in Tra Vinh Province in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regression. Results: The prevalence of dyslipidemia was high in men (47.3%) and in women (51.4%). Men had a higher prevalence of high TG (28.9% vs. 23.9%), whereas the prevalence of high TC (34.1% vs. 42.4%), and high LDL-C (28.2% vs. 37.9%) were lower in women, (all P<0.05). In men, dyslipidemia was significantly associated with central obesity (OR=2.58, 95% CI=1.32-5.06), overweight/obesity (OR=2.50, 95% CI=1.75-3.56), and diabetes (OR=2.15, 95% CI=1.22-3.78). In women, dyslipidemia was significantly associated with diabetes (OR=2.14, 95% CI=1.08-4.24), central obesity (OR=1.69, 95% CI=1.18-2.42), overweight/obesity (OR=1.50, 95% CI=1.06-2.10), and hypertension (OR=1.43, 95% CI=1.03-1.99). Age was significantly associated with increased risk of dyslipidemia in both genders. Conclusion: Overall, the prevalence of dyslipidemia among Khmer men and women adults aged 25 - 64 years in Vietnam was high. Our findings indicated an urgent need to have dyslipidemia prevention intervention programs for the Khmer ethnic people in the Mekong Delta, especially training about obesity and increasing healthy lifestyles.

The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has impacted the lives and well-being of individuals worldwide, affecting both short-term and long-term quality of life. This study aimed to assess health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and associated factors among patients who have recovered from COVID-19. A cross-sectional survey was conducted at 2 hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam between January and March 2022. Data were obtained from patients who recovered from COVID-19 using a structured questionnaire which included the EuroQoL-5 Dimension-5 Level (EQ-5D-5L) scale to quantify problems in 5 health dimensions (mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain/discomfort, anxiety/depression) and the EuroQoL-Visual Analog Scale (EQ-VAS) to determine self-rated health status. Factors associated with HRQoL were determined using a generalized linear model (GLM). A total of 325 participants were included in the analysis. The overall mean score from the EQ-5D-5L and EQ-VAS was 0.86 (SD 0.21) and 78.6 (SD 19.9), respectively. Anxiety/Depression and Pain/Discomfort were the major problems experienced by the participants. Lower HRQoL scores were reported among those who were 60 years and older, female, had comorbidities, persistent symptoms, living alone and experiencing stress (all P < .05). This study showed that there was a significant reduction in HRQoL among individuals who recovered from COVID-19, compared with the general population. The findings suggest that more interventions need to be implemented to increase such individuals' quality of life, particularly for those who exhibit high-risk factors such as females, those with comorbidities, persistent symptoms, living alone and experiencing from stress.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Vaccination is one of the interventions that can be employed to control coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The aim of this study is to identify factors that affect vaccination intention among health science students, by using the health belief model (HBM) as a theoretical framework. METHODS: This study was undertaken in April 2021 using a convenience sample strategy among health science students in Tra Vinh University, which is a university in South Vietnam. Participants were required to complete the self-report questionnaire. All data were calculated by using STATA 14 software, to determine the factors associated with COVID-19 vaccine acceptance, a multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed, along with odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI). RESULTS: A total of 412 eligible participants were taken part in the study, with a questionnaire response rate of 48.2%, reporting that 77.7% of participants intended to receive a COVID-19 vaccination when available. An overall score of knowledge was 7.8 ± 1.5 (range 0-10), a positive attitude toward vaccination including perceived susceptibility and severity (3.1 ± 0.7), perceived benefits (3.1 ± 0.7) and cues to action (4.0 ± 0.6). Determinants of willingness to get a COVID-19 vaccination included their field of education, knowledge and factors in HBM model including perceived susceptibility and severity, perceived benefits and cues to action (all p < 0.05). In contrast, perceived barriers had a negative association with the probability of vaccine acceptance (p < 0.05). The study did indicate a number of participants not willing to receive a vaccination due to, mainly, safety (67.4%), development issues (58.7%) and side effects (79.3%). CONCLUSION: The theoretical framework recognized factors that influence vaccine acceptance. These are considered evidence for the development of planning strategies to optimize the vaccination uptake and offer success in vaccination campaigns for both health science students and the general population.
