RESUMEN

We performed fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) calculations to investigate structural and energetic properties of graphenylene (GPNL), a two-dimensional network of sp2-bonded carbon atoms with large near-circular pores, and its H2 separation performance for gas mixtures. We have found that the energetic stability of a GPNL monolayer is comparable to that of γ-graphyne, as evidenced by its large cohesive energy of 6.755(3) eV/atom. Diffusion barriers of several gas molecules, including hydrogen, through a GPNL membrane were determined from the analysis of their adsorption energies depending on the adsorption distance, which led to our estimation for hydrogen selectivity with respect to other target molecules. DMC hydrogen selectivity of a GPNL monolayer was found to be exceptionally high at 300 K, as high as 1010-1011 against CO and N2 gases. This, along with high hydrogen permeance due to its generic pore structure, leads us to conclude that GPNL is a promising membrane to be used as a high-performance hydrogen separator from gas mixtures. We find that when compared to our DMC results, DFT calculations tend to overestimate H2 selectivity, which is mostly due to their inaccurate description of short-range repulsive interactions.

RESUMEN

Diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) calculations have been performed to study the adsorption of a single Pt atom on pristine graphene. We obtain the adsorption energy curves of a single Pt atom adsorbed at three different adsorption sites (bridge, on-top, hollow) as functions of the vertical distance from a graphene surface for both spin singlet and triplet states. The bridge-site adsorption in a singlet spin state is found to be energetically most stable, which is consistent with previous theoretical predictions. As the Pt atom moves away from a graphene surface, spin triplet states are favored over spin singlet states for all three adsorption sites, reflecting that the ground state of an isolated Pt atom is in a spin triplet state. Furthermore, our DMC calculations reveal local-minimum features in the triplet region which is understood to be due to van der Waals interaction between the Pt atom and graphene. This provides a comprehensive understanding for a spin crossing from a physisorbed triplet state to a chemisorbed singlet state in the adsorption process of a single Pt atom on graphene.

RESUMEN

Structural properties and energetics of carbon rings are studied with the diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) method. Our DMC-based geometry optimization reveals that both polyynic C4n and cumulenic C4n + 2 rings exhibit bond length alternations for n ≥ 3, which is understood to be due to Jahn-Teller distortions. The bond length alternation even in a cumulenic (4n + 2) carbon ring was experimentally observed in a recently synthesized C18 molecule. From a comparison of the DMC cohesive energies of C4n with those of C4n + 2, we present a comprehensive picture of the competition between Hückel's rule and Jahn-Teller distortion in small carbon rings; the former is more dominant than the latter for n < 5 where C4n + 2 rings are more stable than C4n, while C4n rings are as stable as C4n + 2 for n < 5 where dimerization effects due to Jahn-Teller distortion are more important.

RESUMEN

Cross-sectional epidemiological studies suggested the intake of fish and seafood was negatively associated with the prevalence of frailty. This study aimed to investigate the hypothesis that the prevalence of frailty is negatively associated with the consumption of total seafood and fish at baseline and 4-year follow-up. Using a multicenter longitudinal study of community-dwelling Korean adults aged 70-84 years old, 953 participants at baseline and 623 participants at 4-year follow-up were included after excluding participants without data on frailty or dietary intake in the Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Study. Frailty was defined using the Cardiovascular Health Study index, and participants with scores ≥3 were considered frail. The trained dietitians obtained two non-consecutive 24-h dietary recalls during spring and fall at baseline. The prevalence of frailty was 13.5%. The intake of fish (OR 0.47; 95% CI 0.24-0.91; p for trend = 0.028) and total seafood (OR 0.34; 95% CI 0.18-0.68; p for trend = 0.002) at baseline was associated with frailty at 4-year follow-up after adjusting for the confounding factors. The intake of fish and total seafood at the baseline was negatively associated with the prevalence of exhaustion, low handgrip strength, and slow gait speed at 4-year follow-up. However, shellfish intake was not associated with frailty. In addition, the intake of fish, shellfish, and total seafood did not differ among the frailty transition groups in terms of deterioration, persistence, and reversal. The total consumption of seafood, particularly fish, could be beneficial for preventing frailty in Korean community-dwelling older adults. In particular, the consumption of fish (total seafood) at baseline could be beneficial for preventing exhaustion, low handgrip strength, and slow gait speed at 4-year follow-up.

RESUMEN

Despite theoretical predictions of a gapped surface state for the magnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 (MBT), there has been a series of experimental evidence pointing toward gapless states. Here, we theoretically explore how stacking faults could influence the topological characteristics of MBT. We envisage a scenario that a stacking fault exists at the surface of MBT, causing the uppermost layer to deviate from the ground state and its interlayer separation to be expanded. This stacking fault with modulated interlayer couplings hosts a nearly gapless state within the topmost layer due to charge redistribution as the outermost layer recedes. Furthermore, we find evidence of spin-momentum locking and preservation of weak band inversion in the gapless surface state, suggesting the nontrivial topological surface states in the presence of the stacking fault. Our findings provide a plausible elucidation to the long-standing conundrum of reconciling the observation of gapped and gapless states on MBT surfaces.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To propose multiple logistic regression (MLR) and artificial neural network (ANN) models constructed using digital imaging and communications in medicine (DICOM) header information in predicting the fidelity of Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) 2000 compressed abdomen computed tomography (CT) images. METHODS: Our institutional review board approved this study and waived informed patient consent. Using a JPEG2000 algorithm, 360 abdomen CT images were compressed reversibly (n = 48, as negative control) or irreversibly (n = 312) to one of different compression ratios (CRs) ranging from 4:1 to 10:1. Five radiologists independently determined whether the original and compressed images were distinguishable or indistinguishable. The 312 irreversibly compressed images were divided randomly into training (n = 156) and testing (n = 156) sets. The MLR and ANN models were constructed regarding the DICOM header information as independent variables and the pooled radiologists' responses as dependent variable. As independent variables, we selected the CR (DICOM tag number: 0028, 2112), effective tube current-time product (0018, 9332), section thickness (0018, 0050), and field of view (0018, 0090) among the DICOM tags. Using the training set, an optimal subset of independent variables was determined by backward stepwise selection in a four-fold cross-validation scheme. The MLR and ANN models were constructed with the determined independent variables using the training set. The models were then evaluated on the testing set by using receiver-operating-characteristic (ROC) analysis regarding the radiologists' pooled responses as the reference standard and by measuring Spearman rank correlation between the model prediction and the number of radiologists who rated the two images as distinguishable. RESULTS: The CR and section thickness were determined as the optimal independent variables. The areas under the ROC curve for the MLR and ANN predictions were 0.91 (95% CI; 0.86, 0.95) and 0.92 (0.87, 0.96), respectively. The correlation coefficients of the MLR and ANN predictions with the number of radiologists who responded as distinguishable were 0.76 (0.69, 0.82, p < 0.001) and 0.78 (0.71, 0.83, p < 0.001), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The MLR and ANN models constructed using the DICOM header information offer promise in predicting the fidelity of JPEG2000 compressed abdomen CT images.

RESUMEN

We have carried out diffusion Monte Carlo calculations for an A1B-1-stacked bilayer blue phosphorene to find that it undergoes a semiconductor-metal transition as the interlayer distance decreases. While the most stable bilayer structure is a semiconducting one with two monolayers coupled through a weak van der Waals interaction, the metallic bilayer at a shorter interlayer distance is found to be only metastable. This is in contrast to a recent theoretical prediction based on a random phase approximation that the metallic phase would be the most stable bilayer configuration of blue phosphorene. Our analysis of charge density distributions reveals that the metastable metallic phase is induced by interlayer chemical bonding and intralayer charge redistributions. This study enriches our understanding of interlayer binding of a blue phosphorene and contributes to the establishment of correct energetic order between its different phases, which will be essential in devising an experimental pathway for a metallic phosphorene.

RESUMEN

The orientation of fruits is a distinguishing morphological feature of pepper (Capsicum spp.) varieties. The pendent (downward curved) growth of the fruit stalks, known as pedicels, is highly correlated with fruit weight and pedicel length. A previous genetic analysis revealed that the pendent fruit orientation is governed by a dominant gene, and incomplete inheritance is also observed in some Capsicum accessions. To identify and localize this gene, a single quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis was performed on one F2 and two recombinant inbred line (RIL) populations, and a genome-wide association study (GWAS) was performed using a core collection. Common QTL regions associated with fruit orientation were detected on chromosome 12. A total of 187,966 SNPs were identified in a genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) for GWAS analysis of 196 Capsicum annuum, 25 Capsicum baccatum, 21 Capsicum chinense, and 14 Capsicum frutescens accessions, representing the germplasm collection of South Korea. The results of these analyses enabled us to narrow down the CapUp region of interest to 200-250 Mbp on chromosome 12. Seven candidate genes were found to be located between two markers that were completely cosegregated with the fruit orientation phenotype. The findings and markers developed in this study will be helpful for additional understanding of pepper fruit development and breeding for fruit orientation.

RESUMEN

Nanomaterials, such as zeolites and metal-organic frameworks, have been studied for CO2 capture and sequestration. However, this application of nanomaterials has been limited largely due to their poor selectivity for flue gases as well as low capture capacity under low pressures. The first-principle density-functional theory calculations for porphyrin-like graphene decorated with a transition metal were performed to investigate the effects of mechanical strain on its CO2 capture capacity. We found that Sc- and V-decorated porphyrin-like graphenes could capture CO2 molecules selectively from gaseous mixtures under low CO2 pressure with compressive strain and release them with tensional strain at room temperatures. The CO2 binding to these transition metals was understood to be mostly due to the Dewar interaction involving hybridization of the metal d orbitals with π orbitals of CO2. These results elucidate a novel approach to the CO2 capture process with the application of the mechanical strain to nanomaterials.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Pulse wave velocity (PWV) and ankle-brachial pressure index (ABI) are non-invasive tools to measure atherosclerosis and arterial stiffness. Heart rate variability (HRV) has proven to be a non-invasive powerful tool in the investigation of the autonomic cardiovascular control. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the relationship among PWV, ABI, and HRV parameters in adult males. METHODS: The study was carried out with 117 males who visited a health care center from April, 2009 to May, 2010. We conducted blood sampling (total cholesterol, triglyceride, high density lipoprotein, cholesterol, fasting glucose) and physical examination. We studied brachial-ankle PWV (baPWV) and ABI. We examined HRV parameters including standard deviation of NN interval (SDNN), low frequency (LF), high frequency (HF), LF/HF ratio. We analyzed the relationship among baPWV, ABI, and HRV parameters. RESULTS: SDNN had a significant negative correlation with age, systolic blood pressure and heart rate. LF and HF had a significant negative correlation with age, and age and heart rate, respectively. baPWV was significantly and positively associated with age, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, total cholesterol, fasting glucose and heart rate. ABI was negative correlated significantly with systolic and diastolic blood pressures and heart rate. After adjusting for all associated variables, baPWV was not correlated with HRV parameters, but there was a significant positive association between SDNN and ABI (r = 0.195, P = 0.014). CONCLUSION: SDNN of HRV parameters had a significant positive correlation with ABI.
