RESUMEN

Microbes in the rhizosphere play a significant role in the growth, development, and efficiency of plants and trees. The rhizospheric area's microbes are reliant on the soil's characteristics and the substances that the plants release. The majority of previous research on medicinal plants concentrated on their bioactive phytochemicals, but this is changing now that it is understood that a large proportion of phytotherapeutic substances are actually created by related microorganisms or through contact with their host. The roots of medicinal plants secrete a large number of secondary metabolites that determine the diversity of microbial communities in their rhizosphere. The dominant bacteria isolated from a variety of medicinal plants include various species of Bacillus, Rhizobium, Pseudomonas, Azotobacter, Burkholderia, Enterobacte, Microbacterium, Serratia, Burkholderia, and Beijerinckia. Actinobacteria also colonize the rhizosphere of medicinal plants that release low molecular weight organic solute that facilitate the solubilisation of inorganic phosphate. Root exudates of medicinal plants resist abiotic stress and accumulate in soil to produce autotoxic effects that exhibit strong obstacles to continuous cropping. Although having a vast bioresource that may be used in agriculture and modern medicine, medicinal plants' microbiomes are largely unknown. The purpose of this review is to (i) Present new insights into the plant microbiome with a focus on medicinal plants, (ii) Provide information about the components of medicinal plants derived from plants and microbes, and (iii) Discuss options for promoting plant growth and protecting plants for commercial cultivation of medicinal plants. The scientific community has paid a lot of attention to the use of rhizobacteria, particularly plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), as an alternative to chemical pesticides. By a variety of processes, these rhizobacteria support plant growth, manage plant pests, and foster resilience to a range of abiotic challenges. It also focuses on how PGPR inoculation affects plant growth and survival in stressful environments.

The nonlinear dynamics of circularly polarized dispersive Alfvén wave (AW) envelopes coupled to the driven ion-sound waves of plasma slow response is studied in a uniform magnetoplasma. By restricting the wave dynamics to a few number of harmonic modes, a low-dimensional dynamical model is proposed to describe the nonlinear wave-wave interactions. PURPOSE: To understand the actual impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and frame the future strategies, we conducted a pan India survey to study the impact on the surgical management of gastrointestinal cancers. METHODS: A national multicentre survey in the form of a questionnaire from 16 tertiary care gastrointestinal oncology centres across India was conducted from January 2019 to June 2021 that was divided into a 15-month pre-Covid era and a similar period of active Covid pandemic era. RESULTS: There was significant disruption of services; 13 (81%) centres worked as dedicated Covid care centres and 43% reported suspension of essential care for more than 6 months. In active Covid phase, there was a 14.5% decrease in registrations and proportion of decrease was highest in the centres from South zone (22%). There was decrease in resections across all organ systems; maximum reduction was noted in hepatic resections (33%) followed by oesophageal and gastric resections (31 and 25% respectively). There was minimal decrease in colorectal resections (5%). A total of 584 (7.1%) patients had either active Covid-19 infection or developed infection in the post-operative period or had recovered from Covid-19 infection. Only 3 (18%) centres reported higher morbidity, while the rest of the centres reported similar or lower morbidity rates when compared to pre-Covid phase; however, 6 (37%) centres reported slightly higher mortality in the active Covid phase. CONCLUSION: Covid-19 pandemic resulted in significant reduction in new cancer registrations and elective gastrointestinal cancer surgeries. Perioperative morbidity remained similar despite 7.1% perioperative Covid 19 exposure.

Collagen proportionate area (CPA, %) is used to quantify liver fibrosis. Here, we assessed CPA performance to sub-classify cirrhosis. CPA was measured in explanted livers from consecutively transplanted patients for hepatitis C virus-related cirrhosis. Model for end-stage liver disease (MELD), Child-Pugh score and decompensating events (ascites, variceal bleeding, non-obstructive jaundice and encephalopathy) were recorded at the time of liver transplant. Of the 154 patients, 24%, 12%, 35%, 24% and 5% had zero, one, two, three and four previous decompensating events. Patients with decompensation had significantly higher CPA than those without (25.1 ± 8.4 vs 15.8 ± 5.5, P < .001). Decompensation was independently associated with CPA, bilirubin and albumin or with CPA and MELD score. CPA did not differ between patients with one, two, three or four decompensating events (22.2 ± 6.3 vs 26.6 ± 8.9 vs 24.5 ± 7.7 vs 24.4 ± 10.9, P = .242). Overall, CPA correlates with the clinical severity of cirrhosis until the advent of decompensation but not with subsequent decompensating events.

BACKGROUND: Myocarditis is a potential complication after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and a known cause of sudden cardiac death. Given the athletic demands of soldiers, identification of myocarditis and characterization of post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection with cardiovascular symptoms (CV PASC) may be critical to guide return-to-service. This study sought to evaluate the spectrum of cardiac involvement among soldiers with cardiopulmonary symptoms in the late convalescent phase of recovery from SARS-CoV-2 compared to a healthy soldier control group, and to determine the rate of progression to CV PASC. METHODS: All soldiers referred for cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging for cardiopulmonary symptoms following COVID-19 were enrolled and matched by age, gender, and athletic phenotype 1:1 to soldiers undergoing CMR in the year prior to the first case of COVID-19 at our institution. Demographic, clinical, laboratory, and imaging parameters were compared between groups. The diagnosis of acute myocarditis was made using modified Lake Louise criteria. Wilcoxon rank sum and chi-squared tests were used for comparison of continuous and categorical variables, respectively. RESULTS: Fifty soldier cases and 50 healthy soldier controls were included. The median time from SARS-CoV-2 detection to CMR was 71 days. The majority of cases experienced moderate symptoms (N = 43, 86%), while only 10% required hospitalization. The right ventricular (RV) ejection fraction (RVEF) was reduced in soldier cases compared to controls (51.0% vs. 53.2%, p = 0.012). Four cases were diagnosed with myocarditis (8%), 1 (2%) was diagnosed with Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, and 1 (2%) had new biventricular systolic dysfunction of unclear etiology. Isolated inferior RV septal insertion late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) was present in 8 cases and 8 controls (16% vs. 24%, p = 0.09). Seven of the 19 (37%) cases that completed an intermediate-term follow-up survey reported CV PASC at a median of 139 days of follow-up. Two of the 7 soldiers (29%) with CV PASC had a pathological clinical diagnosis (myocarditis) on CMR. CONCLUSIONS: Cardiovascular pathology was diagnosed in 6 symptomatic soldiers (12%) after recovery from SARS-CoV-2, with myocarditis found in 4 (8%). RVEF was reduced in soldier cases compared to controls. CV PASC occurred in over one-third of soldiers surveyed, but did not occur in any soldiers with asymptomatic acute SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Idiopathic non-cirrhotic portal hypertension (INCPH) is a rare vascular liver disease that has attracted new interest in recent years. It is characterised by clinical signs of portal hypertension in the absence of cirrhosis or severe fibrosis and any known cause of portal hypertension. As much uncertainty exists about INCPH pathophysiology, and no definite diagnostic tests are available, liver biopsy is an essential tool for achieving a definite diagnosis. Unfortunately, the histological diagnosis of INCPH is not always straightforward, as the characteristic lesions are unevenly distributed, vary greatly in their severity, are often very subtle, and are not all necessarily present in a single case. Furthermore, specifically for the characteristic portal vessel changes observed in INCPH, the terminology and definition are ambiguous, which adds complexity to the already complex clinicopathological scenario. An international study group of liver pathologists and hepatologists pursued a consensus on nomenclature for the portal vascular lesions of INCPH. Such standardisation may assist pathologists in the recognition of such lesions, and will possibly facilitate further advancement in this field.

Septic shock is a life threatening condition and a medical emergency. It is associated with organ dysfunction and hypotension despite optimal volume resuscitation. Refractory septic shock carries a very high rate of mortality and is associated with ischemic and arrhythmogenic complications from high dose vasopressors. Angiotensin II (AT-II) is a product of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. It is a vasopressor agent that has been recently approved by FDA to be used in conjunction with other vasopressors (catecholamines) in refractory shock and to reduce catecholamine requirements. We have reviewed the physiology and current literature on AT-II in refractory septic/vasodilatory shock. Larger trials with longer duration of follow-up are warranted to address the questions which are unanswered by the ATHOS-3 trial, especially pertaining to its effects on lungs, brain, microcirculation, inflammation, and venous thromboembolism risk.

INTRODUCTION: Interventional radiologist may be hesitant to obtain upper pole access for percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) due to a higher complication rate. Renal access gained by urologists may achieve higher stone-free rates with similar complication rates. We evaluate our institution's contemporary results of percutaneous renal access in the upper pole for nephrolithotomy by urologists, which we believe both safe and efficacious. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective chart review included all PCNL's performed by fellowship-trained endourologists from 2003 to 2014 at a single institution. Inclusion criteria included patients in which renal access was obtained by the urologist via the upper pole for PCNL. Stone-free status was determined by either KUB or CT scan on POD #1. Patients without stones visible on KUB or less than 4 mm on CT were considered stone-free. RESULTS: A total of 144 patients obtained upper pole access for PCNL. There were a total of 53 (37%%) staghorn calculi, of which 35 (66%) were partial staghorn stones. Renal access was obtained above 11th rib in 12.5% (n = 18), between the 11th and 12th rib in 57.6% (n = 83), subcostal in 14.6% (n = 21) and undetermined in the rest. Complications were seen in 18 (12.5%) of patients. Hydropneumothorax requiring chest tube was seen in 8 (5.6%) patients. Postoperative imaging confirmed 93 (64.5%) patients stone-free, and 35 (24.3%) required a second look PCNL. CONCLUSIONS: Our experience with upper pole percutaneous renal access for nephrolithotomy has shown that it has an acceptable complication risk. It should be a part of an endourologist's armamentarium that operate on large burden, complex stones or ureteral pathology.

Clinicopathological concepts on acute and chronic liver disease have evolved rapidly during the last few years, with advances in general and specific treatment options and improved patient outcomes. The old paradigm of 'irreversibility' of cirrhosis had been challenged in major ways, and the validity of the usage of the term 'cirrhosis' has come into question. This paper addresses aetiology-based clinicopathological concepts and features that may deserve attention because they may determine disease outcome and, specifically, patterns of regression and remodelling. A variety of therapeutic interventions may influence remaining disease features after elimination of damaging agents (virus, alcohol, etc.), and determine the final clinical outcome including the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). New concepts create new responsibilities and opportunities for the pathologist to contribute to the understanding of liver pathology and communicate this with clinical colleagues and researchers.

Accumulation of amyloid fibrils in the viscera and connective tissues causes systemic amyloidosis, which is responsible for about one in a thousand deaths in developed countries. Localized amyloid can also have serious consequences; for example, cerebral amyloid angiopathy is an important cause of haemorrhagic stroke. The clinical presentations of amyloidosis are extremely diverse and the diagnosis is rarely made before significant organ damage is present. There is therefore a major unmet need for therapy that safely promotes the clearance of established amyloid deposits. Over 20 different amyloid fibril proteins are responsible for different forms of clinically significant amyloidosis and treatments that substantially reduce the abundance of the respective amyloid fibril precursor proteins can arrest amyloid accumulation. Unfortunately, control of fibril-protein production is not possible in some forms of amyloidosis and in others it is often slow and hazardous. There is no therapy that directly targets amyloid deposits for enhanced clearance. However, all amyloid deposits contain the normal, non-fibrillar plasma glycoprotein, serum amyloid P component (SAP). Here we show that administration of anti-human-SAP antibodies to mice with amyloid deposits containing human SAP triggers a potent, complement-dependent, macrophage-derived giant cell reaction that swiftly removes massive visceral amyloid deposits without adverse effects. Anti-SAP-antibody treatment is clinically feasible because circulating human SAP can be depleted in patients by the bis-d-proline compound CPHPC, thereby enabling injected anti-SAP antibodies to reach residual SAP in the amyloid deposits. The unprecedented capacity of this novel combined therapy to eliminate amyloid deposits should be applicable to all forms of systemic and local amyloidosis.

OBJECTIVE: Airway access recommendations in potential catastrophic spine injury scenarios advocate for facemask removal, while keeping the helmet and shoulder pads in place for ensuing emergency transport. The anecdotal evidence to support these recommendations assumes that maintaining the helmet and shoulder pads assists inline cervical stabilization and that facial access guarantees adequate airway access. Our objective was to determine the effect of football equipment interference on performing chest compressions and delivering adequate ventilations on patient simulators. We hypothesized that conditions with more football equipment would decrease chest compression and ventilation efficacy. METHODS: Thirty-two certified athletic trainers were block randomized to participate in six different compression conditions and six different ventilation conditions using human patient simulators. Data for chest compression (mean compression depth, compression rate, percentage of correctly released compressions, and percentage of adequate compressions) and ventilation (total ventilations, mean ventilation volume, and percentage of ventilations delivering adequate volume) conditions were analyzed across all conditions. RESULTS: The fully equipped athlete resulted in the lowest mean compression depth (F5,154 = 22.82; P < 0.001; Effect Size = 0.98) and delivery of adequate compressions (F5,154 = 15.06; P < 0.001; Effect Size = 1.09) compared to all other conditions. Bag-valve mask conditions resulted in delivery of significantly higher mean ventilation volumes compared to all 1- or 2-person pocketmask conditions (F5,150 = 40.05; P < 0.001; Effect Size = 1.47). Two-responder ventilation scenarios resulted in delivery of a greater number of total ventilations (F5,153 = 3.99; P = 0.002; Effect Size = 0.26) and percentage of adequate ventilations (F5,150 = 5.44; P < 0.001; Effect Size = 0.89) compared to one-responder scenarios. Non-chinstrap conditions permitted greater ventilation volumes (F3,28 = 35.17; P < 0.001; Effect Size = 1.78) and a greater percentage of adequate volume (F3,28 = 4.85; P = 0.008; Effect Size = 1.12) compared to conditions with the chinstrap buckled or with the chinstrap in place but not buckled. CONCLUSIONS: Chest compression and ventilation delivery are compromised in equipment-intense conditions when compared to conditions whereby equipment was mostly or entirely removed. Emergency medical personnel should remove the helmet and shoulder pads from all football athletes who require cardiopulmonary resuscitation, while maintaining appropriate cervical spine stabilization when injury is suspected. Further research is needed to confirm our findings supporting full equipment removal for chest compression and ventilation delivery.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Chronic liver disease is a predisposing factor for development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Toll-like receptors play a crucial role in immunity against microbial pathogens and recent evidence suggests that they may also be important in pathogenesis of chronic liver disease. The purpose of this study was to determine whether TLR7 and TLR9 are potential targets for prevention and progression of HCC. METHODS: Tissue microarrays containing liver samples from patients with cirrhosis, viral hepatitis and HCC were examined for expression of TLR7 and TLR9 and the data obtained was validated in liver specimens from the hospital archives. Proliferation of human HCC cell lines was studied following stimulation of TLR7 and TLR9 using agonists (imiquimod and CpG-ODN respectively) and inhibition with a specific antagonist (IRS-954) or chloroquine. The effect of these interventions was confirmed in a xenograft model and diethylnitrosamine (DEN)/nitrosomorpholine (NMOR)-induced model of HCC. RESULTS: TLR7 and TLR9 expression was up-regulated in human HCC tissue. Proliferation of HuH7 cells in vitro increased significantly in response to stimulation of TLR7. TLR7 and TLR9 inhibition using IRS-954 or chloroquine significantly reduced HuH7 cell proliferation in vitro and inhibited tumour growth in the mouse xenograft model. HCC development in the DEN/NMOR rat model was also significantly inhibited by chloroquine (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The data suggest that inhibiting TLR7 and TLR9 with IRS-954 or chloroquine could potentially be used as a novel therapeutic approach for preventing HCC development and/or progression in susceptible patients.

The gold standard to diagnose acute cellular rejection (ACR) after liver transplantation (LT) is histological evaluation, but there is no consensus to select patients for liver biopsy. We aimed to evaluate the agreement among clinicians to select candidates for liver biopsy early after LT. From a protocol biopsy population (n = 690), we randomly selected 100 LT patients in whom the biopsy was taken 7-10 days after LT. The clinical information between LT and protocol biopsy was given to nine clinicians from three transplant centres who decided whether a liver biopsy was needed. The agreement among clinicians to select candidates for liver biopsy was poor: κ = 0.06-0.62, being κ < 0.40 in 76% of comparisons. The concordance between indication for liver biopsy and moderate-severe ACR in the protocol biopsy was κ < 0.30 in all cases. A multivariate model based on the product age-by-MELD (OR = 0.81; P = 0.013), delta eosinophils (OR = 1.5; P = 0.002) and mean tacrolimus trough concentrations <6 ng/ml within the prior 4 days (OR = 11.4; P = 0.047) had an AUROC = 0.84 to diagnose moderate-severe histological ACR. In conclusion, the agreement among clinicians to select patients for liver biopsy is very poor. If further validated the proposed model would provide an objective method to select candidates for liver biopsy after LT.

Accurate sub-classification has important prognostic implications but there is no stage beyond cirrhosis using current qualitative histological systems. We compared the performance of all histological semi-quantitative and quantitative methods specifically developed for sub-classifying cirrhosis that have been described to date, with collagen proportionate area (CPA), to evaluate how well they distinguish patients with and without hepatic clinical decompensation at presentation, and in predicting future decompensating events. METHODS: We included consecutive patients with a histological diagnosis of cirrhosis that had a suitable liver biopsy between 2003 and 2007. We used semi-quantitative histological scoring systems proposed by Laennec, Kumar, and Nagula. We also measured quantitatively nodule size, septal width and fibrous tissue expressed in CPA. RESULTS: Sixty-nine patients, mean age 52.3±11years, mean MELD 11.8±5.8, median follow-up 56months. Main aetiologies were alcohol (38%) and hepatitis C (27.5%). Twenty-four patients (34.8%) had had a previous episode of clinical decompensation. Amongst the 45 patients who were compensated, 11 (24%) decompensated on follow-up. In Cox regression, amongst all histological parameters, CPA was the only variable independently associated with clinical decompensation up to the time of biopsy, with an odds ratio that ranged from 1.245 to 1.292. Furthermore, only CPA was significantly associated with future decompensation (OR: 1.117, 95% CI 1.020-1.223; p=0.017). CONCLUSIONS: Cirrhosis can be accurately sub-classified using quantification of fibrosis with CPA, and furthermore CPA is the only independent predictor of clinical decompensation amongst all other histological sub-classification systems described to date.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Quantification of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) has been proposed as a useful diagnostic marker for clinical staging (identification of inactive carrier state) and prognosis of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between HBsAg levels in serum and histological liver damage in patients with chronic infection. METHODS: HBsAg levels in serum (by Abbott Architect) were related to HBV DNA, ALT and histological score (n=160) and covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA) (n=84). RESULTS: HBsAg levels correlated with cccDNA, serum HBV DNA, ALT and high inflammation scores (P<0.001). Among HBeAg-negative patients, an HBsAg level below 3.0 log10 IU/ml identified minimal liver damage (normal ALT and mild inflammation) with a predictive value of 92% (alone) or 96% (in combination with HBV DNA<4.0 log10 copies/ml), whereas an HBsAg level above 3.5 log10 IU/ml identified severe inflammation with a predictive value of 16% (alone) or 33% (in combination with HBV DNA>5.0 log10 copies/ml). CONCLUSIONS: HBsAg levels reflect clinical stage and liver disease, and a combined quantification of HBsAg and HBV DNA may improve clinical staging.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Guideline images of specific fat proportionate area (FPA) percentages have recently been published to aid the histological assessment of liver steatosis as subjective estimates of FPA are usually overestimated. To assess, (i) the effect of guideline images on accuracy and concordance of estimated FPA (eFPA), (ii) experience of steatosis grading systems on eFPA, (iii) the effect of magnification on assessment of FPA (iv) and produce a range of guideline images at x4 objective magnification (OM). METHODS: Two circulations of sample images (C1 and C2) were circulated to UK liver external quality assessment histopathology scheme members who were asked to independently evaluate steatosis. Each circulation consisted of 15 images taken at both x20 and x4OM representing the full range of steatosis. C1 was distributed first, then C2 with guideline images of FPA 6 weeks later. RESULTS: Participants overestimated FPA in C1. In C2, there was significant improvement in accuracy (P < 0.001) of eFPA for sample images with mFPA >5%. Concordance of x4OM eFPA was substantial in both circulations (C1 K = 0.878, C2 K = 0.724). CONCLUSION: The tendency to overestimate eFPA has been corroborated and can be largely corrected with the use of guideline images (without needing digital image analysis). There is a need to redefine steatosis grades that are clinically significant and validated using an accurate quantification of steatosis.

Purpose: Tisotumab vedotin-tftv, an antibody-drug conjugate, was recently FDA-approved for metastatic or treatment-resistant cervical cancer. A high rate of ocular comorbidities was seen in pivotal clinical trials. We present a case of a 46-year-old woman who experienced prolonged ocular surface adverse effects associated with use of the drug. Observations: Our patient was initiated on tri-weekly 2mg/kg infusions of tisotumab for metastatic cervical cancer. Baseline ophthalmic exam was unremarkable. One week after the second infusion, she developed bilateral eyelid edema and chalazia managed with initiation of lid hygiene measures. Preceding the fourth infusion, she developed unilateral pseudomembranous conjunctivitis and bilateral meibomitis that improved with topical corticosteroids. The fifth infusion was subsequently given at a reduced dosage. Despite this, she experienced decreased vision, bilateral diffuse punctate epitheliopathy, and subepithelial haze. The patient was subsequently referred to the cornea service. Symptomatic and clinical improvement was initially achieved with the addition of bandage contact lenses (BCLs). As the keratitis improved, topical steroids were tapered and BCLs removed. She is currently maintained on a regimen that includes eyelid hygiene, preservative-free artificial tears, punctal plugs, autologous serum tears, and lifitegrast. Given the severity of the ophthalmic adverse effects, however, further tisotumab infusions were held. Conclusions and importance: This is a report of a patient with prolonged ocular surface disease following the initiation of tisotumab, significant enough to lead to discontinuation. Antibody-drug conjugates are an emerging class of therapeutics across oncology, and ophthalmologists should be aware of their potential effects on ocular health.

PURPOSE: To assess visual acuity (VA) outcomes in a large cohort of patients diagnosed with nonarteritic central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO), and to ascertain whether time from symptom onset to presentation, presenting VA, or conservative treatment delivery (anterior chamber paracentesis, ocular massage, intraocular pressure lowering drugs, hyperventilation, or some combination of those) impacted ultimate VA outcomes. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SUBJECTS: The study included 794 patients who presented with CRAO between 2011 and 2020. Within this cohort, 484 individuals presented within 30 days of symptom onset and had comprehensive documentation regarding the details of their presentation, management, and follow-up ≥ 90 days postdiagnosis. METHODS: Retrospective chart review was conducted for all patients with a diagnosis of CRAO initially identified via International Classification of Diseases coding, followed by confirmation of diagnosis by 2 retina specialists. Cases of arteritic CRAO were excluded. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Visual acuity recovery, defined as improvement from ≤ 20/200 or worse at presentation to ≥ 20/100 ≥ 90 days after diagnosis. RESULTS: Of the 794 identified patients, 712 (89.7%) presented with VA of ≤ 20/200. Similarly, 447 (92.4%) of the 484-patient subset that presented within 30 days and had comprehensive documentation presented with VA ≤ 20/200. Of the 441 of those patients with documented follow-up, 380 (86.2%) remained at that level. Of the 244 patients who presented within 4.5 hours of symptom onset, 227 (93%) presented ≤ 20/200 and 201 (92.6%) of the 217 of those with follow-up data did not improve beyond that threshold. There was no significant difference (P < 0.05) in final VA between patients presenting before versus after 4.5 hours from time of vision loss. There was also no significant difference (P < 0.05) in VA outcomes between patients who did or did not receive conservative treatment. CONCLUSIONS: This large retrospective study further highlights the poor visual prognosis for patients with CRAO. Earlier time to presentation did not seem to impact final VA outcome, nor did conservative treatment efforts. Efficacious evidence-based treatment options are needed for this patient population. INTRODUCTION: Almost a quarter of the people on earth are anemic, and most of them reside in regions of sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Anemia in children is linked with impaired cognitive and motor development and affects the future earning capacity. The most common cause of anemia is iron deficiency. The Indian Government has initiated multiple programs for the eradication of anemia. The prevalence of anemia has not decreased despite the improvements in the country's economy. It increased from 58.7% in 2015-16 to 67.1% in 2019-21 in children and from 50.4% in 2015-16 to 52.2% in 2019-21 in pregnant women. Maternal education, socioeconomic status, and number of children in the family are some factors that influence the prevalence of anemia. As these factors cannot be improved in a short time, we aimed to increase awareness about this issue by targeting school students from rural/semi-urban backgrounds. METHODS: This pilot study aimed at promoting school students as public health advocates in their community. Anemia Awareness Program was conducted in a local middle school in the suburban area, which was attended by 153 class eight students (72 female). Pre- and post-test questionnaires comprising 20 multiple-choice/true-false type questions were used. Pre- and post-test scores were obtained. The second part of the study was the identification of students with anemia. Blood hemoglobin levels of 127 students (58 female) were measured from venous blood samples. The students were also asked to inform their friends/relatives about anemia and to send people with symptoms of anemia to the free two-day Anemia Awareness Camp organized by the Medical College Hospital for check-ups. RESULTS: The mean post-test score (15.68/20) was much higher than the pretest score (2.99/20). Thirty-eight (25 female) out of 127 students had mild/moderate microcytic hypochromic anemia, suggesting iron deficiency. Thirty-two persons visited the free health camp to receive information from the students, of whom four had normal hemoglobin levels. CONCLUSION: This pilot study showed that physician-conducted anemia awareness programs are relatively low-cost methods to spread information among the general population in India.
